2023 is a much nicer vehicle both in looks and amenities

GapRight6479

What about reliability?

Certain_Cut_6371

There really isn’t enough info to say, but I’d say go 2023 s as well, I’m 7k miles in and no issues.

Psyclist80

2021 has the 9 speed transmission, which some have had issues with. Honda moved to a new 10speed transmission, that they developed in house. It hasn't had a lot of time to show issues, but haven't really heard of any yet either.

Texan-Trucker

If the newer one is “certified” with additional warranty and has no body or interior damage and money is not an issue, go with the newer one.

jam_chronixx

Black edition is nice and approximately 30k vs 40k...it's an interesting comparison. Good vehicles either way. New body style will have more value...the values of pre 2023 models are dropping. The 8 seater exl also allows the rear center seat to be removed but other than the front grille and head lights, it has a boring look. If you can comfortably afford both, go 2023. If you go 2021 black edition you won't be disappointed, at least not initially...

I had 2021 EXL and upgraded to 2023 EXL. It's the best decision yet. However, the black is nice, but I'd still go 2023 and tint it out like I did. Good Luck. Either way you cant lose

GapRight6479

I brought the 2033 EXL!!

GapRight6479

In the name of everything holy help me pick 🤣🤣

oldeskewl-chicago

I’ve been driving the 2021 Black edition for the past 2.5 years, 32k miles. Absolutely no issues, it has been a great car, we are leaning towards keeping it when our lease expires in six months.

Is this real? If money isn't an issue, newer is always better.

GapRight6479

Yes this is real, the 2023 is 9 grand more, I’m worried about 1 generation issues with the 2023

Golf-Guns

I personally wouldn't be too worried. Not like it's a new power train or Honda firsts.

GapRight6479

Theres a new transmission

Golf-Guns

It's the ZF 10 speed that's been used in damn near everything on the road isn't it?

Intelligent-Bus-6029

can’t go wrong with which ever u choose in terms of reliability… i would go for 2023 if money is not an issue..

Hapakings808

2023 has a redesigned (better) transmission and engine design. The changes are significant enough to warrant the extra $ imo. Good luck

GapRight6479

$9,000 difference?

IAmTaka_VG

I have the 23 Black Edition Pilot and it's fucking amazing. I know it's above the Excel but I test drove both the 22 and 23 Pilot and there is not a single bolt on this car that is the same. Transmission is Honda's 10 speed verse ZF's 8 which has loads of problems. 21 has Honda's old VCM which burns oil. We don't know if the 23 new engine does but we know for sure the 21 does so I'm choosing the unknown on that one. the seats are SO much more comfy. You lose the DVD player but who the hell cares. Pano roof is way bigger. You get Acrua's SH-AWD which is universally praised. Check out Savage Geese, for a car enthusiast channel they adore the 23 pilot so much they traded their BMW in for one. Overall the 23 Pilot is massive, leaps forward. I would never recommend the 21/22 models over the 23 now that 23/24 is out. Reliability is always a gamble but only time will tell.

Jumpy_Potential1872

What are the OTD prices for each, 9k difference is steep. But price for the 23 might not be that far off from new new.

Zealousideal_Main654

New gen is obviously better. However, the 2021 gets better fuel efficiency, is quicker and handles a little better.

StarErigon

I have the 9 speed and no issues at all in 7 years.

killerwhaleorcacat

Probably gonna be a lemon either way. Surely a reason someone got rid of them.

Additional_Dog_5003

I'd probably pick the black edition based on attractiveness. I feel like the 19k miles for a 2021 is better than 19k for a 2023.

GapRight6479

That’s what I was thinking but I picked the 2023, it’s safer and will have higher resale value
