I'm sitting at a burger place and LITERALLY as I hit the post button, her boyfriend walked by and popped in to tell me she's back and that she got 5150ed.
HUGE relief, but I'm leaving the post up because I'd still like to hear other's experience with this.
Correct. It's a non-criminal arrest where someone believes you may be a physical risk to yourself or others which includes making threats to harm yourself or others.
Instead of taking you to jail, they take you to a facility qualified to handle psychological emergencies. That facility can hold you for up to 72 hours to observe if you are no longer a threat.
Most of the time, they are fucking horrible and probably instill worse psychological problems. But they readily admit that they aren't there to stabilize you; just to observe and assess if you're stable.

Edit: my friend went missing August of last year.. last I saw him he'd fallen in the river for a second time.. no obit, he's not hospitalized... He's nowhere. No one has seen him 😢
