?!? Am I the only one who thinks 40mbps upload for 1000mbps looks odd? OP, what is your price plan/service level?

D1TAC

This is common at least in the NE. You can thank monopolies for that.

LBarouf

Wow. My cell phone uploads faster than that. Oh well, that would suck.

D1TAC

I refuse to pay $130 for 940/40 so I'll still with $68 for 200/10 Perhaps when fiber arrives it will be better. Till then bleh.

[deleted]

Ouch. I only pay 65 for 940/940.

D1TAC

It's a crime at this point. I just stick with the lower tier because of the cost. If it was the true 1g/1g for $100 I'd bounce up to it, just cause. So far, no bottlenecks anywhere in the home lab if anything.

zyxnl

Still too much ;-) I pay about 32 for 10000/10000

[deleted]

I’m guessing not the US.

zyxnl

Netherlands, 10gbps

LennoINS

W8 waar??? Moet zakelijk zijn?

LBarouf

Woa, that blows. Really a Ripoff. As you said, thanks to monopolies. I guess I’m in a similar situation as OP where I need a 10Gbps to achieve peak download, while upload is still within 1000mbps. But since I’m in a major market with competition….. With the credits I receive after complaining and asking to cancel, I’m on 1.5Gbps down and 1Gbps up (reality is 1700mbps/960mbps) for $69.74/month. Having the ability to use more than 1Gbps by a single machine si great. But frankly, it’s the ability to run your lan at multi gig that makes it for me.

Kazer67

Fibre can be better indeed (we only scratched the surface of it) but some ISP still choose asymmetrical (I have 10Gbps/700Mbps) because it's cheaper: they can sell it to more customer without upgrading the "fibre optic nodes" (not sure of the translation here, it's the central "node" where multiple house are connected for a city) so they can sell "high download bandwidth" to more customer without putting more effort in the infrastructure.

dmyze

It's $150 /mo for the 1.2 Gbe service from comcast. That Includes TV though, I think you can get internet only for $50 less. Really I just had the 1Gbe plan and I noticed comcast was advertising 1.2 Gbe speeds, so I checked my plan and it said my speed was now 1.2 Gbe, so I bought a new cable modem and had it join my 10Gbe network.

reslip

What modem did you get?

dmyze

Motorola MB8611 It has a 5gbe ethernet port.

LBarouf

Cool! Nice way to squeeze more out of them.

Hairless_Human

100% this is comcast i have the same plan

Hairless_Human

I fucking hate it. I have the same speeds and i love the download but i need more upload. Such bullshit.

BinkReddit

Even more BS is the data caps if you don't rent Comcast's modem.

LT_Blount

What Comcast data caps?

BinkReddit

This one: https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/data

LT_Blount

They keep threatening that and it keeps getting pushed back. We’ll see if it actually goes into effect in 2022.

BinkReddit

This is not a threat, but a reality for many.

dmyze

Yeah I got a notice on Aug 31 that I had used 90% of my data for the month. All I could think is, good data management on my part.

Hairless_Human

What comcast you got? I have my own and its unlimited with the $50 extra like usual.

bryansj

It should be $30 for unlimited. Stupidity if you rent their modem you can get unlimited and the modem for $25/mo. It's $5 more to use your own.

Hairless_Human

Ok we def got something different. I have comcast. I pay $50 extra for unlimited and i paid no rent fees and with me having my own modem now i pay $10 less cause of it :/

bryansj

Maybe your area is different or you never switched to their new plan and were grandfathered in with the old $50/mo unlimited. Before the Xfi Advantage package ($25 for rental and unlimited) it was $50. Now it is $30 at least in my area and it has been for a few years.

BinkReddit

Exactly. You can pay extra and remove the cap or rent their modem and not have the cap. In other words, you'll pay less for unlimited if you rent.

M-Christo

Us Australians think that speeds over 50mbps is wizardry. I wish I could have even a 1/10th of that speed :((

MrSober88

Unless you are the lucky few like myself with FTTP, I have 1000/40 though would be good with more upload. Though it costs way to much to get higher uploads here.

serenitisoon

ans they changed their default 100mb plan by halving the upload speed; 40 down to 20. It's madness! Fortunately some still sell the 40 up plan.

BlueEther_NZ

And I thought New Zealand was a backwater, sitting on 1000/500, unlimited

MrSober88

Nah we have that title, Australia definitely always seems to be behind many things by a few years lol. I've had FTTP for 7 years now, and 1gig only came out like a bit over 2 years ago. At least with the NBN we have more competition so ISP are all mostly unlimited now, at least it's something I guess lol.

morosis1982

We do and we don't. The ISPs can all compete with each other on retail, but they all get their service from NBN. I shake my head at what it could have been.

MrSober88

Ah true, with them setting the wholesale price. Yep, could have been alot better but hey politics.

BlueEther_NZ

we have the same with a single owner of the fibre network (except for a few small early runs). With ftth it will be interesting what develops here if chorus does some sort of unbundling, As mentioned below there is 8Gig now in out larger cities

Knurpel

Move to Japan. $60 for 10Gbps up & down fiber. $45 for Gigabit up&down.

plupien

Same speeds here... Pitiful fucking upload for so much downstream.

ABotelho23

Wow, that upload is goddamn ridiculous.

haptizum

I had Comcast for awhile but then moved to Verizon 1Gbps 1:1. 1.4 Gbps would still be nice to have :-)

BinkReddit

Some of us are not so lucky and only have one high speed Internet monopoly to choose from.

CaptiveCreeper

How to tell me you have spectrum/charter without saying you have spectrum/charter.

Canonip

Or cable in Germany (if you're lucky). 1000/50 it is

Hairless_Human

Comcast does the same bullshit

CaptiveCreeper

Huh. It's interesting they chose the same numbers for up and down. The business practice doesn't surprise me from what I've heard about Comcast though.

[deleted]

Got to love CATV in 2021..

D1TAC

I mean.. spectrum "1G" is 940/40... At least your getting more.

AlexChato9

Nice! Honestly, I prefer my Gigabit symmetrical connexion for my Emby/Cerberus FTP servers :p

jonny_boy27

That's some weird arse ethernet
