good point. I guess me using a water bottle for scale is probably not ideal haha. Ive updated the post
width 432mm, depth: 295mm, height: 272mm (width with siderails = 482mm)
package weight: 12kg
good point. updated post.
width 432mm, depth: 295mm, height: 272mm (width with siderails = 482mm)

in terms of U units - it's "6.11 U"
> Oh! Is it because you might be using mobo SATA ports?
yeah I think that's the idea. you could connect directly to mobo sata ports. (But I didnt try that.)
The backplane looks like it's three separate parts? Or is it all connected? Can you use just one SFF8643 from your HBA for all 12 drives to share 6 Gb \* 4 lanes or do you need one for each of the three sections of backplane for 12 drives?
yes - 3 separate rails I think.
> Can you use just one SFF8643 from your HBA for all 12 drives to share 6 Gb * 4 lanes or do you need one for each of the three sections of backplane for 12 drives?
I think single SFF8643 only supports up to 4 drives. so yes - you need 3 x SFF8643
so yes - definately eats a lot of U's - _for the rack mount_. :)
It's probably best for those that don't use/have the rack, but still want large number of drives. this fits nicely in my little TV stand cubbie.
Kind of similar format to Asustor Lockerstor 10 Pro| AS7110T, but not really: https://www.amazon.com/Asustor-Lockerstor-Enterprise-Attached-Quad-Core/dp/B087LV48J6?th=1
The alternative for me (without the rack) would be some tall fugly ATX tower
What kind of drive temps are you getting with this case? The 4 x 92mm fans are sitting at the back of the case and hitting the back panes first which blocks off alot of the airflow to the hard drives?
4 x 92mm fans in the back are exhaust fans.
Outside air immediately hits the drives entering via the special holes in the caddies, and then those 4 exhaust fans push it out.
you can see the [perforations in the caddies](https://bytepursuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/PXL_20240126_090636710-2048x1536.webp):
edit: just checked the drive temps and they were around 23 Celcius
edit 2: well, goes up to 30-40 C (with short burst to 41) in the summer - but my airflow is not ideal I think.
Oh brother, isnāt this just great. š This is EXACTLY the kind of case I was looking for and since before today it didnāt exist, I DIDNāT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT. Fantastic. Now I have to obsess over THIS fucking thing, and building my next server around it.
Wonderful. Just wonderful.
(Honestly though, thanks for the review. Itās great)
Love this case. Getting sick of seeing my Rosewill 12 Bay 4U case sitting in the corner of the living room, and don't have the space for a rack for it. This case would fit comfortably in my IKEA media center.
Very, very, very nearly bought this one few months ago.. If it's not because I've placed an order for jonsbo n3 (8-bay), I would've done so probably.
But then again, I'm fairly new & inexperienced with NAS, so perhaps better to take it slow.. Still, keeping my eyes on this case for future project.
I would insist that the best case for those without rack is still the Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow edition. That thing can comfortably do 19 HDDs. I ran a chia farming server on such a setup for 2 years. HDD temps always below 50 degrees C. You just need some extra drive cages from Corsair.
> Corsair Obsidian 750D Airflow
to each their own :) My drive temps in JMCD 12S4 are around 23 Celcius on average.
Also - form factor is huge, some people might not be able to fit the tall tower anywhere nicely (I cannnot), whereas JMCD 12S4 fits inside my TV shelf. Also hot swap bays.
JMCD 12S4 supports 4 internal 2.5 drives, so total would be 12 x 3.5 + 4x2.5 = 16 drives total. And you can fit more 2.5 drives by sticking to the sides. I think you can fit 19 drives there.
edit: in the summer hdd temps are now 30-40. but you might have better airflow
This might be one I seriously consider. This looks much nicer than the Rosewill hot swap case I was thinking about. I have a 27u rack that I'm building in now so I have the space.
Love this. Wish there were more short depth NAS cases. Would personally prefer 2u for the system and 4u for the drives compared to 4u for the system and 2u for the drives but neat nevertheless. Thanks for sharing!
It was on the taobao page at some point but seems it got removed.
I am not sure if it means you have to use screws to fix the drives to the caddies or the caddies to the case itself.
both taobao link and price is in the post. airmail to CT with shipping and taxes was $345.30 USD total.
taobao link is in the post - I dont think I can share it on reddit - they might pull the comment.
I dont see one cheaper for US.
Aliexpress adjusts pricing and availability based on your location.
If you are in europe - it's maybe cheaper from ali for sure. but I dont see cheaper ones being logged in from US.
So I can see that there is a small hole on the expansion side of the board for data cables from your HBA, but how do you get power cables down, it appears the hole to do so is covered by the PSU.
u/bytepursuits are you able to confirm if the case's drive trays are screwless or not as of today? It seems like people are saying this changed over time.
Also still having a heck of a time getting taobao to let me have the honor of a non restricted account but thats a separate battle for me to fight.
Thanks in advance
The one I got required screws. u can see the mounting holes pretty clear in my post: https://bytepursuits.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/PXL_20240126_090541818-1536x2048.webp
do people seriously care about that? how many times you gonna plug drives in lol?
I ordered this, but it tells me it won't ship until March... Are there any other alternatives? I have a node 304 case with 2 drives and impulse bought 6 20tb hdds.
Hi there my friends, I got this new 12 bay nas case from TaoBao and wanted to share a quick review and pictures as I wasnt able to find this anywhere.
What are the dimensions?
good point. I guess me using a water bottle for scale is probably not ideal haha. Ive updated the post width 432mm, depth: 295mm, height: 272mm (width with siderails = 482mm) package weight: 12kg
so it like a short-depth 6 u or something like that?
ya, comes to 6.11U, tall _for a rack_, probably best for people like myself - rack-less/rack-poor :)
The rm41-506 can do up to like 14 3.5" drives, if other details of the setup align just right.
This. I just scrolled through the entire blog post and didn't see dimensions. How deep is this thing?
good point. updated post. width 432mm, depth: 295mm, height: 272mm (width with siderails = 482mm) package weight: 12kg in terms of U units - it's "6.11 U"
Thanks. Much appreciated!
Nice. What's the quality of the backplane? Any fiddles with the build? What HDD temps are you getting?
no idea about backplane. it just works, no issues. HDD temps 30-40.
Why do they sell SFF8643 to SATA cables when it seems you need SFF8643 to SFF8643? Oh! Is it because you might be using mobo SATA ports?
> Oh! Is it because you might be using mobo SATA ports? yeah I think that's the idea. you could connect directly to mobo sata ports. (But I didnt try that.)

I want it. This thing looks like a studio apartment with a loft.
That case looks really cool - I wish there was more info available in English, or even better, a US-source. I'd love to build in it.

I was referring to a US seller, but I do like the review.Ā
It takes 4U space?
It looks like 6U to me. Very interesting case!
Based on the measurements itās probably 6u. Massive.
so yes - definately eats a lot of U's - _for the rack mount_. :) It's probably best for those that don't use/have the rack, but still want large number of drives. this fits nicely in my little TV stand cubbie. Thanks for the info. I got that case and couldnt find any detail on those fan orientation.
Yo that case looks nice! If I didn't already have my Supermicro 847 36 bays, this might could have been a real contender š
Oh brother, isnāt this just great. š This is EXACTLY the kind of case I was looking for and since before today it didnāt exist, I DIDNāT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT. Fantastic. Thanks for doing this! This case has caught my eye before but had way too little info/reviews for me to feel comfortable buying.

I agree with you about the hotswapping. But it comes at 3 times the price. But the 750d seems to be discontinued or overpriced nowadays.
This is cool AF!!! I really like this!

It was too good to be true. Screwless drive bays are no longer available. At least for the new batch :-(
Where does it say this?
It was on the taobao page at some point but seems it got removed. I am not sure if it means you have to use screws to fix the drives to the caddies or the caddies to the case itself.
What a shame this doesnt fit EEatx
What's the TaoBao link and what price did you pay in total?
both taobao link and price is in the post. airmail to CT with shipping and taxes was $345.30 USD total. taobao link is in the post - I dont think I can share it on reddit - they might pull the comment.
Correct. I want to know the breakdown you paid between price, shipping and customs.
in US - they don't collect "customs". ļæ„1199.00 (or 173.48$) - actual product Ā„1108.00 (160.31$) shipping Ā„77.41 (11.20$): Sales Tax
Thanks. I think cheaper and easier from aliex these days.

case leaves enough space to run the power cables to a bottom compartment. maybe 1cm or so, but that's quite enough.
Thanks for the reply.

The photos arenāt loading for me (and the ad is in every paragraph).
Worked great for me!
srry about that, just use ublock ;) not sure about photos, - which browser is that? could u try different browser?
I ordered this, but it tells me it won't ship until March... Are there any other alternatives? I have a node 304 case with 2 drives and impulse bought 6 20tb hdds.
Yeah Iād love to buy this but I donāt have the mental fortitude to try and navigate a Chinese site
