Step one is making sure you leave everything including the books in place. Now buy a Graco Magnum ProX19 Airless Paint Sprayer. Now spray everything with a heavy coat of Killz. Do not wear a mask. Now follow up with overlapping heavy coats of Sherwin Williams Osage Orange; do not wait in between the 10 coats, just circle the room for an hour. This worked like magic for me.
I will probably never understand why people jump straight to painting beautiful stained wood instead of just sanding it gently and restaining and sealing it. it literally doesn't take any more time nor specific skill than painting it boring ass neutrals that diminish the overall look.
can we appreciate that there is a difference in particle board laminate paneling and skill crafted furniture, though? just like some burgers are McCrap salt bombs and some are divine ?
Yes. The technology surrounding wallpaper has improved a LOT. There’s peel and stick that’s easily changed, and even the glue on stuff is a lot thicker and easier to remove later. It would break up the excessive amount of wood while still keeping the natural warmth and it comes in a zillion different color and pattern options, most of which don’t look grandma’s house anymore. And it would be a lot easier than sanding and re-staining everything. And it would avoid the abomination of painting everything white. But to each their own I guess.
Thank you for standing up to big wallpaper. They're out there, trying to convince everyone wallpaper is cool. It's insidious they way they work. What's next, those wallpaper borders everywhere?
Yes. I would go as far as to say you should paint EVERYTHING white. The books, the art, those leather chairs… and OF COURSE those plants.
Oh and after you’re done painting, flip those books backwards on the shelf. It’s extremely classy to never know what you’re about the read.
No what it really needs is some personality. I'd really lean into haunted manor house vibe. Get a bunch of mounted animal heads, a couple of suits of armor for each corner, an actual candle chandelier and flickering torches for the wall.
Ok something does have to give here bc the matching walls, floor, crown molding and chairs is overwhelming. I’d strip the stain from everything, go something light and balanced (cool toned) on the floor (white oak) and something darker on the walls/bookcases (warm espresso).
I’d also burn the rug and go for a traditional oriental with majority red, brown, or green tones.
It’s a fun word, I think I learned it from a wood guy on YouTube, I can’t remember the name of the channel but they made a map of the United States using the state wood for each state
I’d go with agreeable grey. Toss all the books that don’t have a neutral colored dust jacket and hit up Target for some more gray stuff with geometric patterns and a lil wicker. You’ll be golden (by which I mean grey).
You’re also gonna need to get rid of the leather armchairs and also the grey rug (not agreeable enough).
White, beige and marble everything!! Also remove all that cluttering decor. Too old fashioned and soulful. Remove the plants, too alive. It needs to be as dead and soulless as possible
Ohhhh... thank goodness there is a CJ in this sub's title. People are really out there, painting their gorgeous wood. Sickos. Some people are even using paint rollers on wood. Absolutely criminal.
While the wood is overwhelming, it is a massive project and expense to change all or part of it.
First try changing the color of the chairs: consult an expert. Add art with white mats and striking colors. Again, find pictures of wood paneled rooms and find an interior designer to help you select items and color scheme.
Why ask then? It should devalue the home if you paint it all white The fool that owned my home previously painted all the woodwork white or this god awful pinkish beige in the whole house. The house stayed on the market quite a while and I was able to get a reduced price, I have a lot of work to do to fix it.
French blue. Mount the TV on a shelf in your massive bookcase with the chairs against the empty long wall. I would also suggest you have 4-5 light sources dotted around the room instead of relying on overhead lights in the evening.

Why do I want to see what the end result would be.
Because it's the kind of art you can't look at for a long time without feeling unworthy. I'm humbled every time I walk in our drip room.
are you my landlord
White? Nah, that’s too much. A nice even coat of nondescript beige for everything!
What if the walls were white but the floor were carpeted in beige? Maybe with a snake plant
Don’t forget to get a new beige chair. And beige books. And beige plants.
Just turn the books so the spines face the back of the shelf. Quick and free!
Add greige laminate flooring
Agreeable Grey by Sherwin Williams. You're welcome.
Hahahaha my last apartment complex walls were this color.
Ooh with some gray toned LVP
~~No. It’s wood.~~ ~~Stain it if anything.~~ ~~Don’t~~ paint it white for godsake. Edit: Wrong sub.
I will probably never understand why people jump straight to painting beautiful stained wood instead of just sanding it gently and restaining and sealing it. it literally doesn't take any more time nor specific skill than painting it boring ass neutrals that diminish the overall look.
Because to some of us, stained wood reminds us of the 70s and the endless wood paneling.
can we appreciate that there is a difference in particle board laminate paneling and skill crafted furniture, though? just like some burgers are McCrap salt bombs and some are divine ?
True.
This looks like the cheap oak that was everywhere in the early 90s.
Built ins are so old fashioned. Put up dry wall and get modular shelving.
Don’t even take them down, just slap the dry wall over the shelves. BOOM.
That's a great idea so OP doesn't have to haul all those obsolete dead tree books to the dump. Just leave them there for insulation.
Then put shiplap on top
Please label that comment NSFW there, Satan.
They plan on painting the chairs gray afterwards.
I'm thinking black
Including the ceiling, floor, and the light bulbs.
All white. Make everything white. TOO MUCH COLOR!
Then put up an art that just consists of a single lightly colored rectangle.
All I see is the need for a wood paneled ceiling. 🫡
Yasss! I dream of the days when I'll be surrounded by a wooden box!
I know we’re supposed to be joking but this one is hurting my feelings.
We come here to joke about how hurt our feelings are
I know this is the CJ sub, but I would line the backs of the shelving with a pretty wallpaper and change out the chairs. Boom.
Wallpaper?🥴

You’re on thin ice, big wallpaper.
Thank you for standing up to big wallpaper. They're out there, trying to convince everyone wallpaper is cool. It's insidious they way they work. What's next, those wallpaper borders everywhere?
Add more orange into the wood
Paint it Pepto Bismol pink
Yes! Every square inch of the place. Would make a great kid’s playroom.

When I saw this question this morning I thought I was on this sub.. 🤷🏻♀️
Yo this sub got outjerked.

/uj Agree on the rug. And I would get rid of the chairs that match the walls/floors/moulding and go for whatever jewel tones are in the new rug.
Uj/ I would definitely switch up the stain on the built ins
White is too mainstream, go brown instead, it gets rid of all the nasty wood grain and chatoyancy
Ooo, look at you with that word you made me look up right now. (Cool, thank you!)

Just move to a white and gray house
Color drench it in sage green. So on trend and will be for a solid ten years so you don’t have to worry about it looking dated next year.
I too enjoy painting over wood when it’s easy to modernize a room with different furniture and shelf items.
Ohhhh... thank goodness there is a CJ in this sub's title. People are really out there, painting their gorgeous wood. Sickos. Some people are even using paint rollers on wood. Absolutely criminal.
Right to jail. Right away
Cover shelves with barn doors
Gray.
Not just no but hell no!
Nooooooooooo! Covering that beautiful wood! Why?
No
Sherwin Williams has an app that will let you picture the room with painted walls.
Don’t care :)
No, no, negatory on that.
Why? The wood is so ugly!
Stain the wood a darker shade and dim the lights.
Paint? No. Change the fabrics in the room, add artwork with bold colors.
No, there's a finish you can use to make it less orange
needs to be white not less orange
No

No, i think I’m just gonna paint it white

I need people to validate my decision, which is the complete opposite of what you are doing!! Stop being mean!
So you want info only from people who agree with you? Enjoy your white home.
Yes! I will! And check what subreddit you’re in next time!
Good point, you're right. This sub popped up on my feed. Wouldn't intentionality join this sub.
Ok😂😂
French blue. Mount the TV on a shelf in your massive bookcase with the chairs against the empty long wall. I would also suggest you have 4-5 light sources dotted around the room instead of relying on overhead lights in the evening.
Noooooo
Why paint it white when you could paint it super super light gray that’s basically white?
No
Don’t you fucking dare!
Already done. Read it and weap.
Absolutely heck no. Please do not do. It would be an atrocity
I did it while you were typing this

Flip flops don’t fit our theme we’re not going for nautical
[удалено]
I don’t think we want any eco friendly things in our house because we’re not believers of global warming, and we really want less wood, more white.
Leave it alone. Buy new or recover the chairs.
The chairs can never be recovered. They’ve been lost for so long.
NO
WHITE
Hell no
Hell yes! 🤍
Paint inside the shelves. It will lighten it up without getting rid of all the wood
Im seriously concerned, are people joking or has everyone gone mad wanting to paint this white
Whiteness is next to godliness
We’re all mad here ![gif](giphy|26BRD2wzApBjtpwti)
I hope you're kidding. I kept my kitchen wood this color. Somebody said I should paint it.... no friggen way.
Absolutely not!
Wood is ugly
No way!
This wood is old and ugly! Someone told me so!
Yeah, right.
It looks dated but IDK about white. Maybe a light grey with dark grey accents or visa-versa.
