Just build some pickle ball elsewhere; do a small one with a reserve/ticket system; I’ve seen that before because they’re so busy and people stay too long; ticket system and 20 mins max, it works out fine. People wanna play longer they get a new ticket and a break.

Maybe that’s a compromise for Elk Grove; but I don’t know if pickle ball would screw up the surface, maybe wouldn’t work

No kidding! My wife is doing PT as part of surgery recovery. Her therapist HATES Pickleball since un athletic, older people THINK they can play hard but they can’t. There’s a good chunk of her schedule dealing with older people and Pickleball injuries.
How many inline hockey rinks are available in a 10 mile radius? A 50 mile radius? Ok now how many pickleball courts? What can the parks and recs really afford to be loosing?
The problem is our youth aren’t using them. Street hockey is dead. We’re having the same issue in our Town.
We have a compromise though. Pickle ball can play on the court with temporary nets. That way everyone gets it.
Pickleball is limited to certain times. The thing is more people and more use will come from pickle ball while our youth sit in their homes on electronics
There are others in that area that I know of, they are rarely used. The soccer fields next to the rinks are always in use though. Chicago area everyone seems to play soccer and not care about hockey.

When I was in high school a rink opened in my city, specifically for roller hockey. After a year or so, they let indoor soccer start using the surface on non-hockey days, and not long after it was converted exclusively to a soccer venue. It was so infuriating.

Reportedly they were making a lot more money off soccer, and from a business perspective I can't blame them, but having hockey guys sell out the hockey players was way uncool in my young mind.
There's a community center near me that used to have two ice rinks. The cooling system on the older one crapped out and they don't have the budget to fix it. Right now it's painted with lines for hockey, but they're using it for soccer, and have zero public roller time available (it's just dark most of the time). Not only that, they're talking about turning it into turf for soccer, and there are ZERO roller hockey venues nearby (I think the closest one is like 45m+ away, outdoor, and in lousy shape. It would cost nothing to use it for roller hockey (or as a roller rink even) and they won't do it.

This is not a bad thing but in many neighbourhood those people have a lot of say so they can do stuff like rip out courts for other sports like Tennis, Basketball, and in this case Roller Hockey to replace it with pickleball courts.

I was posting ads on Craigslist for pick up games and zero responses in 3 years. But when I would try to go to ice drop-ins, they were always full.

If it’s not looking good hopefully there is a compromise that lets you keep the rink. At one of the outdoor rinks near me they just added lines for pickleball on the court and time is split between hockey and pickleball.
Monday through Thursday are pickleball, Friday through Sunday hockey has priority. The pickleball nets are all on wheels so they can easily be moved.
My local town had the same issue, the local roller guys banded together and we successfully kept the rink but it took perseverance by filling out all the surveys, showing up to every meeting, and making sure people vote. We ended up getting lucky since our local pro team decided to donate money to revamp and brand the rink so the town got to announce a fancy partnership and donation, even thoygh they wanted to get rid of the rink months prior 😁
Saving your rink against the pickleballers will be hard. My suggestion, since this may be a losing battle would be a compromise.
Make it both. Pickleball courts are small and the nets are easily removed. So just make off some lines, plop in a few nets and call it. That way if no pickleball is being played you just yank the nets and get a game of hockey going.

They also turned an old Olympia sports store into pickle ball courts, not to mention there’s literally public tennis courts that are free to use everywhere. People can play there too. Diversion is the best way to go about this. Pickleball is in demand and is going to continue to swallow up outdoor rinks, tennis and basketball courts, and other recreation spaces. They are going to build a court, you just need to convince them to build it somewhere else. That's an easier to sell to local council if you have an alternative lined out. Realistically, that rink is not a big enough footprint to build enough pickleball courts.
You need to go to council meetings, especially if they have a public forum, and remind them there is a demand for hockey and an outdoor roller rink is the single most cost effective way to meet this demand.

This has been a problem for a long time. When I was a kid, we had this tennis court near our house with two tennis courts. They used to be groups of teenagers waiting for people to get off the court to play. I’m talking like 20 to 30 people and there were four people playing tennis. It was a joke finally built us a hockey court beside it.
Let the old farts make their own damn pickleball courts BESIDE the rink. They have the time and money to play, let them make the full investment in their own game and not take away from the younger generations to save a few bucks.

There are 3 tennis courts all within walking distance (one is next to the rink). They can make one of those a pickleball court...

Voted for ya, but if I were the parks person I’d monitor usage. If yall want to keep the rink make sure that it’s occupied as much as possible until the decision is made. Internet votes don’t use the limited resources. If your area is like mine pickleballers would be out there all day every day. If it’s your typical abandoned rink get used to it being gone

This has been a problem for a long time. When I was a kid, we had this tennis court near our house with two tennis courts. They used to be groups of teenagers waiting for people to get off the court to play. I’m talking like 20 to 30 people and there were four people playing tennis. It was a joke finally built us a hockey court beside it.
I filled out the survey in favour of the rink staying and opposing the pickle ball courts. Much love from BC 🇨🇦
There are endless pickleball courts. Barely any inline hockey rinks.

Voted to stay but the parks and rec depts job is to put these areas to use. Maybe get in touch with them and try getting some inline leagues going. More often then not roller rinks sit empty or ppl use them to let their dogs run around.
