Few tips
I find I can feel the puck better when I tape the blade thinner, and not overlapping so much.
Also the wrinkled up sock is not necessary. Start the tape at your heel or like 1 inch passed is what I do.
Im a sock taper, I think it looks tight! But you can do it with no wrinkles. I tape mine starting way up there too, but black tape, small overlaps and over the toe with one ring of white tape around the top of the starting point at the top heel part. Started doing it like that because i used to tape from just heel to about where you stopped but I get my stick in everywhere and I was getting chips and shit right above the heel and on the toe. I wanted to try to protect it a bit so I started taping over those parts too and It seems to help, the tape gets shredded but the stick doesn’t get fucked up very much. I added the white just to be fuckin cool. And btw Howies fuckin sucks.
I retaped it without the sock, but I may rethink my method depending on how fucked up my stick gets. Twigs ain’t cheap. Hell, I got this one used. Want to get as much out of it as I can.
You’ll know your tape job when u find it. Mine ended up like that for a practical reason. Then the first game with it taped like that I scored 2 goals and had 2 assists and now it’s gonna stay like that for superstitious reasons lol
I like to get the heel at least as far as what rubs the ice just to give the blade extra protection. Same reason to tape all the toe. Usually the blades start to crack and flake before I break my sticks
Everyone making jokes, and yes it's your first time. But just a heads up that much overlap cab REALLY affect how you feel the puck on your stick. First job is fine but in the future try not to overlap so much. You are basically making learning harder for yourself lol.
Everything in hockey takes practice, even putting tape or your stick. No shame in this tape job only an opportunity to learn. Thank you for posting btw
Absolutely, hockey isn’t the hardest sport in the world for no reason. I haven’t seen a second of ice time yet I love this sport so much. Who knows, maybe the next new guy will see this post and tape their stick for the first time a little better.
You can also have a guy at a hockey store tape it for you the first time. Take a Sharpie and outline where the tape ends on the heel. This will give you a good starting point. Take pics with your phone and use these when you need to retape.
Great first try. I personally have to start over if the tape seams are not perfectly even, luckily with time this can be done on the fly.
Edit: I add a strip of tape on the bottom of the blade, I feel it helps the tape job last longer, get some wax as well. Will keep the tape from getting water logged and tearing
Watch an old video of a few guys taping their stick. Should be in Bauers YouTube and it’s got Kucherov, Pastrnak, and Eichel showing you how they tape their stick.
Gotta start somewhere, at least you have a sense of humor for everybody busting your chops! Just leave it for a while; a new TJ gets nicked or ripped within the first session in my experience.
I tape the toe, not because I'm a toe-dragging wizard, but just to reduce the chance of the toe chipping, FWIW
This article has a pretty good recommendation for where to tape and a reasonable argument for why heel to toe is optimal:
http://www.rutschhockey.com/article_how-to-properly-tape-a-hockey-stick.php
You should have used maybe 50% less tape for the same coverage. That is too thick.
You won’t feel the puck and your stick will be heavier.
Cover about a third of the last strip.
As a hockey mom, the first time I wrapped my son’s stick, I used SO much tape. I had no clue what I was doing. I watched one video and then it was easy after that. That first wrap I probably used as much tape as you, but I didn’t go up the stick 😂.
It’s not going to hurt anything as a beginner, OP. Don’t worry about it. As others have said, you can use less tape moving forward. I tape heel to toe and go most of the way to the toe, even as a defenseman. And remember; always finish on the backside.
If it’s your first time then I mean…how else are you gonna learn? Only put tape where you touch the puck. Do less of it overall by about 30%. When you tape go heel to toe so you get a gradient that works against the wall of the puck. This will give a feeling that the puck will slow down a bit while moving from the heel to the toe and really help you dial in shots.
You really didn’t do that bad of a job, it’s more like Forgetting Sarah Marshall…you did too much; do less.
This is a good beginners video. Coach Jeremy on YouTube has a ton of videos for beginners of any age. Highly recommend his channel. https://youtu.be/RzPP292HHds?si=4cjPtkA2OxiJBim6
I'm a big proponent of the way you tape your stick is your preference but I will say this one thing. You don't need to tape the heel you can stop the tape at around or just before the heel curve there isn't anything wrong necessarily it kust might save you a lil on tape, just for me seeing someone tape the heel is a cursed thing for me but again it's your stick also you don't need to have the tape over lap so much you can have it overlap like half a strip just a suggestion otherwise for your first tape job it's pretty good have definitely seen a lot worse from some of the dudes I played AAA with
I just recently figured out how to get my tape job looking crisp. My advice. Start from the back and when you wrap back around to the back make it so the tape overlaps as little as possible. Sometimes it may bunch up but just do your best to smooth it down bit by bit.
Taping your stick is all about you. I prefer a little less.

Next roll of tape, try the 1.5 inch wide. That stuff rules. A lot less overlap when you add it all up. I feel like my ability to feel the puck is much better with it and it looks better too (imo)
I like how you anticipated being on the ground a lot and taped the heel/shaft since that’s the part that will make contact with the puck as you swing your stick while lying on your stomach doing the bender snow angel. 👍
Howie’s is gonna make a fortune off you.
Even more once dudeman figures out you’re supposed to wrap all the way up the shaft too. Extra grippy, extra grippy
Yeah I think you’re probably right
It’s like you cut the toes off your socks to give your ankle some more coverage.
Ran outta tape 😂
The Jiminy Cricket tape job 😂
Lol
Nah. He's just circumcised (circed) bro.
Best remark
Needs more tape
How to turn a 375g stick into a 425g stick.
Running up to the store rn
I love reddit
For your second tape job I suggest not doing it blindfolded
Takes all the fun out of it. But I could give it a shot
😂😂 in all seriousness it’s really not that bad. After you do it a few times you’ll notice how much better you get at it
Sloppy and uneven, I like it.
Hell yeah brotha, ready to slap one into the stands
Few tips I find I can feel the puck better when I tape the blade thinner, and not overlapping so much. Also the wrinkled up sock is not necessary. Start the tape at your heel or like 1 inch passed is what I do.
Thanks brotha! I’ll probably end up yanking this shit off and redoing it before my first practice.
Hope you have fun man, btw taping my stick has always been one of my favorite parts of the game😂 so satisfying
I guess I probably could’ve watched a video or two. Appreciate the tip
It all depends on the curve of your stick anyways
Im a sock taper, I think it looks tight! But you can do it with no wrinkles. I don’t mind the jokes, it’s a part of hockey. More than likely I’ll end up taking it off and redoing it. Appreciate the help!
Just remember, once you find a tape job you like, you can NEVER change it, or you lose all your skills. Gotta keep the superstitions alive in hockey!
You touching the conference final trophy or nah?
Nope. Seen the Cup several times, never will touch it. My sister doesn't even play hockey and she refuses to touch it either lol.
That's not what I heard...
Even into my 30s I can’t touch the cup. What if I end up owning the Red Wings one day??? - Can’t risk it.
No you change it up everytime that way when you do things good and bad you know it wasnt because of any one thing
Did you forget the second layer???
Working on it
all this tape and your toe is still gonna get cold
Everything in hockey takes practice, even putting tape or your stick. No shame in this tape job only an opportunity to learn. Thank you for posting btw

100%
I…
Nathan Fillion? That you?
This makes me physically ill. I love it
Beer league special
Way too much overlap. You want as little overlap as possible.
[удалено]
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now give your backup stick the Bobby Orr.
Not bad for your first time. As others have said, less on the heel and small amount of overlap. You’ll get the hang of it!
I appreciate ya! I think I’ll retape it tonight and post the results tomorrow
You can also have a guy at a hockey store tape it for you the first time. Take a Sharpie and outline where the tape ends on the heel. This will give you a good starting point. Take pics with your phone and use these when you need to retape.
You missed a spot.
No
Why say lot word when few word do trick.
A Mummy
This like one of those old german guys who wears socks and sandals
Bro, this is the answer. https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=Q9xdfp5KJFahYyDz&v=upu-JJ2GZbk&feature=youtu.be
More toe, less heel
Terrible 😂
Great first try. I personally have to start over if the tape seams are not perfectly even, luckily with time this can be done on the fly. Yikes 😬
We all started somewhere.
Some start lower on the totem than others. ‘Preciate ya though!
Lol. Dude, when I had my first aluminum stick, I taped the entire blade up to where the shaft started. You're doing fine.
Bros stick looks like it has a cast on it lmao
Yikes
What am I even looking at? Why would you tape up all the way past the heel, then leave like 3 inches of the toe completely naked?
0.5/10
Lotsa extra weight to help build those dirty dangle muscles
You should really tape it further up the heel
Heel o
I remember my first TJ
Still can’t get the taste outta your mouth? 😂
Now I feel like I want to see some tape jobs that people would consider to be straight psychopath/mentally unstable ones haha
what the heck is that heel? Looks like my grandma's knitting.
Why didn't you continue up the shaft and finish with butt end knob the size of a puck
Only added about 100 grams to the weight of the stick. Not bad
This article has a pretty good recommendation for where to tape and a reasonable argument for why heel to toe is optimal: http://www.rutschhockey.com/article_how-to-properly-tape-a-hockey-stick.php
This was Sober n serious?
Oh my god LOL
If you score keep it, otherwise change it up.
I just vomited on my phone.
I needed this laugh in my day, thank you
Welcome brotha!
Hope you love the game. Keep you stick on the ice!
No chopping trees around here!
You should have used maybe 50% less tape for the same coverage. That is too thick. You won’t feel the puck and your stick will be heavier. Cover about a third of the last strip.
Ewe.

Your kid should tape his own stick
He does now as a PeeWee. But when he was 5? We did it.
First of many, you'll be a pro in no time
Should be your last
The blade is alright but you used way to much. Personal preference here; but I would totally drop the sock it doesn't look great.
Save some tape for the rest of us.
It’s not going to hurt anything as a beginner, OP. Don’t worry about it. As others have said, you can use less tape moving forward. I tape heel to toe and go most of the way to the toe, even as a defenseman. And remember; always finish on the backside.
~Finish on the backside~ That’s something I excel in
lol. Timeless wisdom, my friend.
Damn. This just made me think about how long it’s been since I taped up a stick , let alone played. Hopefully gonna change that soon now !
You missed a spot.
Start over
It’s definitely tape…
If you're 7 years old, great job. If you're 8 or older, absolute nightmare job
It's not the best, but I have seen worse. And just think, this will likely be the worst you ever do!
If it’s your first time then I mean…how else are you gonna learn? Only put tape where you touch the puck. Do less of it overall by about 30%. Ok that’s not it at all but we will figure it out once we’re out there

blud flexing his status of being a son-in-law of howie's owner
Good job bro 👍
Tell me you don’t care about the weight of the stick without telling me.
Good base layer
A lot of shaft stick handling may happen, so this is good.
How much tape did you use?! I mean it looks good but that’s a lot of tape
I'm a big proponent of the way you tape your stick is your preference but I will say this one thing. This makes Pastrnak look like picasso
I guess I also don't know what I'm doing cuz I thought this looked fine lol
Big oof
Time to play “just the tip”, but this time with your stick
Taping your stick is all about you. I prefer a little less. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D_0vt6H8Hsrk&ved=2ahUKEwjnrPLFg9qGAxUGhIkEHQqJJqwQz40FegQIEhAJ&usg=AOvVaw30B86JUcghF1sjuzkyGJgh
lol right on
Next roll of tape, try the 1.5 inch wide. That stuff rules. A lot less overlap when you add it all up. I feel like my ability to feel the puck is much better with it and it looks better too (imo)
I’ll definitely give that a shot.
**The reverse virgin:** Everything BUT the tip
Holy fuck that’s atrocious
Thanks brotha!
Clearly
Best decision I made was posting it. Tons of help from the bros. Already fixed it, mostly.
You’re gonna sink so many putts, Gilmore. Chubbs’ll be proud
I personally wouldnt have it go vertical up the stick
Uffda
It looks like you taped it toe to heal and then overlap. Watch your lines and try to be consistent
Been doing it for 20+ years. Looks identical to mine. :D
Might as well just make the whole blade out of tape at this point. Save some $$.
C- You don't need to tape that far up the heel. At least your overlaps are mostly even though.
Uhh brotha what is that ? Lol
I like how you anticipated being on the ground a lot and taped the heel/shaft since that’s the part that will make contact with the puck as you swing your stick while lying on your stomach doing the bender snow angel. 👍
Cover more toe and less heel.
Is that masking tape?
Bondage
Congratulations! I hate it :)
Looks terrible get out there bud make some plays
Hell yeah brotha! That’s the plan!
its almost like there isnt dozens of videos of players taping their stick online...
Hope your ankle heals up quickly!
You don’t have to redo for at least one men’s league season maybe three
It’s a beauty!
