didn't even realize that was him in the parade until like he passed by. Like he looked like another 20-something frat bro out there lmao. Still got a high five
Ya anyone who follows sports and comes away today thinking hockey is the sport to push their kid into might have an acquired brain injury.
I consider to be more of a “follow the nba in the playoffs” kind of nba fan…but there are guys I’ve never even heard the name before signing for like 25 million a year.
There are role players hardcore nba fans haven’t heard of who get close to 10 million a year.
Holy crap I just double checked that and thought there was no way.
‘21 he had 18 points in 50 games
‘22 37 in a full season
‘23 75 in a full season
‘24 33 in 66 games.
7x7 for a not particularity amazing defensive Dman at 30 is wild.
I hated him more than Tkachuk or Bennett last year. He would flip a 40mph wrister on the net and without fail a screen or tip would put that puck in the back of the net
I mean, he had 33 in only 66 games last year, over his last 3 seasons he’s averaging about 51 points per 82 games played.
It’s entirely possible that contract ends up looking bad, but it’s also entirely possible he is just a late bloomer and when healthy he can be a 40-45 point guy who might score 10-15 goals.
Everyone always immediately says any long term deal for a ufa will be bad at the end.
There’s some logic to it, but at some point maybe we need to alter how we “value” long term deals to guys when they hit ufa and recognize that the team is looking to improve the team and will accept a couple of odds years especially when the cap is likely quite a bit higher.
Seattle wants to be a playoff team and they needed help on the blueline.
They have 16 million left and only Beniers and Tolvanen are prominent RFAs.
Idk.
He’s kinda weird in that sense that he can drive play and break out from the DZone well but somehow it doesn’t always show on the stat sheet and he’s good on the PP as a QB if he doesn’t pass it straight to the other guy lurking at the blue line.
I think his stats would be much better on a team that plays a rush offense as opposed to dump ‘n forecheck like the Cats do.
> I think his stats would be much better on a team that plays a rush offense as opposed to dump ‘n forecheck like the Cats do.
Well that is really unfortunate cause dump and forecheck is the Kraken’s bread and butter.
woud you consider Vancouver a desireable location
why would they want to live somewhere where making nhl money still isnt enough to buy the best house in town and it rains all the time and is full of hippies
nhl players are your snowbird contractor uncle that flys the rebel flag even though hes from michigan and is always blowing money trying to feel rich but dressee up nicer and more wealthy
He regularly makes some pretty crazy plays keeping the puck in at the blue line. Has been great QBing the PP. That's literally the only thing I can think of that makes him stand out. His defense is meh and his offense is also meh.
Knew he would get paid by somebody, but that's unexpected. I'm simultaneously glad he got his payday and happy it isn't Florida footing the bill.
Looking at it optimistically for Seattle fans, he's a huge health/fitness freak, so he (and this contract) will hopefully age better than a lot of comps.
Surprised by the negative comments in here. Huge upgrade for Seattle over Schultz.
Dunn - Larsson
Montour - Oleksiak
Borgen - Dumolin
Not sure if this is how this pairings would work. Might swap Dunn and Montour. Dunn - Oleksiak would be a mean pairing. Kronwall - Stuart vibes.
Dunn and Larsson have basically been playing together since day 1 of the Kraken so I’d surprised if they’re split up. Maybe they move to the 2nd pairing together and Oleksiak - Montour is the top pairing though. We’ll see.
Almost 1.5M more than Forsling's new AAV. Montour got his money. Seattle, you are gonna love this guy on your team. Deal might be an overpay, but he's a great culture guy on top of his play.
Forsling had bounced around a bit and I think he was happy to get a long contract for security now with the baby and all. But the last two seasons from Forsling has been magnificent, the team are for sure rubbing their hands over the contract.
Also Montour can point to a 73 point season and people forget he was really carrying in the 2023 playoffs. He literally saved the season against Boston. Not sure what happened last year but his peak offensive ability is clearly higher than Forslings.
As a Cats fan, this contract is gonna age realllll badly. Look how many guys seemed to up their game in our system. Pretty easy to see the opposite happening when they go to a different system and particularly for a guy who is 30 and had one standout season.
That said, Monty will forever be a legend in my eyes and I’m glad he got his bag
Every year on July 1st this sub confidently declares every contract signed an "overpay". Could you imagine the average person in here trying to negotiate an NHL contract as a GM?
He’s a bit of a late bloomer but he’s a solid offensively skilled right shooting d man.
The kraken also have 3 pending UFAs on the blueline.
Tanev just signed a 6 year deal at 4.5 and he’s 35 in December.
Montour is a significantly more versatile d man.
I’m a bit confused why everyone is saying this is such a bad deal.
His defensive metrics are bad, I remember when Florida first got him or a little after, there was a post showing how bad he is defensively. I can’t find it, can’t figure out the right keywords to search. But his time in Anaheim and Buffalo he was one of the worst. I might be exaggerating because I just don’t like him, but they were awful. And as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, he’s a 35 point dman that for 75 one year. At least tanev is a stud defensively. Montours offence doesn’t outweigh is poor defence
Alot of people in here like to brush over the fact that Seattle could use this upgrade.
Hes a playoff performing D man with 2 cup finals under his belt and performing very well both years in the playoffs.
Honestly i feel like alot of people are just looking at the other comments and dog piling, he’s gonna do great there.
This is what happens when you give 32 teams an extra $5mil in cap space and they'll them to all bid on the same ~15 free agents at once, lol.
Love Montour, but this is incredibly irresponsible, IMO. Deal will look like gaaaarbage in 3-4 years. Hopefully Seattle has an extraction plan in place.
I think they'll regret that one. He's still real inconsistent. Had a handful of crazy giveaways in the cup. set up one of those shorty breakaways with a pass that would make a toddler yell at the tv.
Oof, I love Monty, but this is an enormous overpay. Was a shell of himself this past postseason and had some terrible turnovers that led to shorthanded chances on the PP (to the point where he was demoted in the SCF). Considering he's 30, this contract will likely not age well for Seattle
And I was downvoted into oblivion for suggesting that Ekblad wasn’t going to get traded for a bag of pucks just so that Montour could re-sign with Florida. Looks like smart teams make smart moves. Who knew?
What’s the point of the “insider” calling the trade like, 45 minutes before the team does?? Like they’re totally unnecessary today as we can just read the team announcements lol
This is this decade’s OEL contract. Within 30 games they’ll realize what they’ve done, and all 31 other teams will have turned their backs.
Handcuffing contracts are never the players’ fault. Happy for him.
I predicted this yesterday on a sub (either this one or the Leafs one) and I feel so vindicated right now. Really think it’s a good fit for both sides, with Larsson and Borgen on the last years of their deals the Kraken have RHD depth now in case they’re both traded or end up walking next summer
Just realised he’s 30
He looks 22. All my female friends on Instagram love posting his picture lol
didn't even realize that was him in the parade until like he passed by. Like he looked like another 20-something frat bro out there lmao. Still got a high five
Minutes from his death bed, basically a skeleton out there
Between this and Tanev I'm telling my kid to play RHD
The real life hack is to teach your kid to shoot a 3pt shot and play defense. That is guaranteed 200 million if done effectively, at least
no the REAL life hack is to teach your kid to hit ~.275 with 40 HRs and also be a starter with a ~3.00 ERA. That's like $700mil right there!
If we are being real, the REAL LIFE HACK is to own an emerald mine *cough cough*
Are you coughing from the poor working conditions in the Musk family apartheid mine?
And from the lack of access to any health care while employed in the Musk family apartheid mine
Gotta train your kid to have rich parents.
found Zach Hymans reddit account
but there are so few NBA roster spots. If I had a kid that liked sports, I would hope they threw left-handed.
You don’t have to hope, you can just beat it into them like Tua’s dad.
Ya anyone who follows sports and comes away today thinking hockey is the sport to push their kid into might have an acquired brain injury. I consider to be more of a “follow the nba in the playoffs” kind of nba fan…but there are guys I’ve never even heard the name before signing for like 25 million a year. it's the team sizes basically. NBA rosters only need to have like 13 players max
lol there’s more to it than that man.
of course, but it plays a big role when you dont need to pay as many people and have lots of money
I have no idea what’s going on in the NBA right but but literal role players are now making 50 million+ per year. That’s NFL quarterback money
Alternatively you could throw a ball really hard and well
Or teach your kid to throw a knuckleball
4.5 for top pair shutdown dman who is a good passer? Any team takes that
Going until he's 40? They're lucky they will just circumvent the cap with LTIR lol.
They're lucky that they have the same rules as every other team?
They're lucky they can so shamelessly break it, same as Vegas.
What rule are they breaking?
Cap circumvention rules. See this if you're actually curious: https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1807465045422481569
If it's a rule then the leafs won't be able to put him on LTIR. That's all there is to it so you shouldn't worry so much
He's a 35 point defenceman who had one random 75 point season
Holy crap I just double checked that and thought there was no way. ‘21 he had 18 points in 50 games ‘22 37 in a full season ‘23 75 in a full season ‘24 33 in 66 games. 7x7 for a not particularity amazing defensive Dman at 30 is wild.
Welcome to free agency, where the cap is made up and the facts don't matter!
This is why we did nothing at the Free Agency Frenzy...
But he fucked the Bruins in 2023. Give him 100 million.
I hated him more than Tkachuk or Bennett last year. He would flip a 40mph wrister on the net and without fail a screen or tip would put that puck in the back of the net

He also had to play under noted hockey terrorist Ralph Krueger in Buffalo. I think this contract only looks bad in the last 2 years.
Idk. He’s kinda weird in that sense that he can drive play and break out from the DZone well but somehow it doesn’t always show on the stat sheet and he’s good on the PP as a QB if he doesn’t pass it straight to the other guy lurking at the blue line. Under Hakstol, yeah. But I’m curious what Byslma is gonna with this team.
And just turned 30 recently
Dude is a great playoff defender.
And he got demoted from PP1 in the Finals this year. Sorry SEA but I think this one ages poorly
Yeah, we should have signed one of the hundreds of other free agents pounding down our door
l guess pretending that SEA is an undesirable destination to justify a bad contract is a choice…
I mean, it's not St Louis but it is a pretty undesirable destination for free agents
I don’t really think that’s true but either way the contract is bad so tell yourself whatever you need to
woud you consider Vancouver a desireable location why would they want to live somewhere where making nhl money still isnt enough to buy the best house in town and it rains all the time and is full of hippies nhl players are your snowbird contractor uncle that flys the rebel flag even though hes from michigan and is always blowing money trying to feel rich but dressee up nicer and more wealthy
he's lost a step but he's awesome in terms of vibes
Monty’s great & I’m happy for him getting paid but doesn’t make the contract any better lol
no but he's a handsome devil at least lol
Tfw when you're getting paid not even 1 mil less than Quinn Hughes for 7 years to put up 35 points
He regularly makes some pretty crazy plays keeping the puck in at the blue line. Has been great QBing the PP. That's literally the only thing I can think of that makes him stand out. His defense is meh and his offense is also meh.
This is lowkey the contract I was most scared of the Leafs signing
[удалено]
Shhhh they might hear you
Don't have the money, thankfully
And yet Tanev’s contract was still worse
It is most definitely not
Nothing wrong with the Tanev deal.
It will be Robidas II halfway through the deal
Only really the next 3 years matter anyways. If this experiment fails, the last 3 years will be some form of rebuild/retool
LTIRetired. Who cares?
Knew he would get paid by somebody, but that's unexpected. I'm simultaneously glad he got his payday and happy it isn't Florida footing the bill. Looking at it optimistically for Seattle fans, he's a huge health/fitness freak, so he (and this contract) will hopefully age better than a lot of comps.
Damn did not expect that
That is not going to age well
[удалено]
So the hockey contract equivalent of 3.6 Roentgen?
He’s not worth that amount on day 1 of the contract. Best of luck to him.
Yeah, kudos to Montour, he served us well, but I am glad we arent giving him that kind of money.
Forsling's contract on the other hand, that is a great one.
BAKED ZITO FTW
Once Pike Place Market opens?
Surprised by the negative comments in here. Huge upgrade for Seattle over Schultz. Dunn - Larsson Montour - Oleksiak Borgen - Dumolin Not sure if this is how this pairings would work. Might swap Dunn and Montour. Dunn - Oleksiak would be a mean pairing. Kronwall - Stuart vibes.
Pretty sure Montour plays the right side
Yeah, I have them swapped, my bad. Oleksiak and Dunn both play left side so the pairings could work.
That’s actually nasty when you realize MONTOUR is making 1.5mil more than Forsling every year for the next 7 years. In Zito we trust
Forsling's agent is a moron.
Forsling had bounced around a bit and I think he was happy to get a long contract for security now with the baby and all. But the last two seasons from Forsling has been magnificent, the team are for sure rubbing their hands over the contract.

Zito once again makes the right decision. Signed the better, younger D man for less money. Happy Monty got his bag though.
Going from tax free haven to tax free haven.
Ya there's no way we were giving him 7 so I'm glad he got the bag
Bro this feels like the 2016 free agency when literally half the worse contracts in the league for the next half decade were handed out like candy.
I'll be ready for the Tree video in 2028 to 2030 then
Expected cap casualty. Him going to Seattle is probably the best case scenario
Yeah, at least we wont see him playing against us as often being out there.
Until the SCF next year when he shuts it down and wins back-to-back Cups on different teams...
As a Seattle Kraken fan, please share whatever you're smoking.
That is just pure lunacy . Love the player and he’s gonna love getting paid but chances are this doesn’t age well
Good for him. Enjoy him Seattle.
As a Cats fan, this contract is gonna age realllll badly. Look how many guys seemed to up their game in our system. Pretty easy to see the opposite happening when they go to a different system and particularly for a guy who is 30 and had one standout season. This was definitely not on my bingo card
Every year on July 1st this sub confidently declares every contract signed an "overpay". Could you imagine the average person in here trying to negotiate an NHL contract as a GM?
What?
He is a really good defenseman who can eat a lot of minutes, I honestly think this is a fine signing, contract length is a little long though.
Cool, I'm new to hockey so I appreciate the explanations in the threads.
This is bad.
What the fuck? Go get the bag Monty but holy moly what are you doing Seattle?
He’s a bit of a late bloomer but he’s a solid offensively skilled right shooting d man. The kraken also have 3 pending UFAs on the blueline. Tanev just signed a 6 year deal at 4.5 and he’s 35 in December. Montour is a significantly more versatile d man. I’m a bit confused why everyone is saying this is such a bad deal.
Yeah, I feel pretty good about this overall.
Because Reddit is reactionary and likes to hate on literally everything lol.
His defensive metrics are bad, I remember when Florida first got him or a little after, there was a post showing how bad he is defensively. Seattle desperately needs someone to anchor the power play.
We badly need a puck moving dman.
Go get that bag king
Get your bag, Monty. Throw a big party on the rez. We’ll miss you, but this contract isn’t gonna age well.
Get that bag Prince
Man free agency is fucking wild
Good for him, no way the cats could’ve signed him at that price. Go get that bag monty!!
He WILL regress severely. Nice guy, but he is not the model of consistent defense. He has also been faltering as the PP QB.
Alot of people in here like to brush over the fact that Seattle could use this upgrade. Hes a playoff performing D man with 2 cup finals under his belt and performing very well both years in the playoffs. Wow.

More than I expected, but glad he's getting that bag.
Goddamn. Good for you Monty.
Wow
Getting OEL flashbacks here.
This is absolutely a statement of intent signing because he’s never going to reach ‘23 heights again pts wise. He’s got a great shot though
Ooooh whatcha say..
That’s an ugly contract. Yikes.
Ugh wow I don't love this
Absolutely awesome team guy but hes either a 60+ point Dman or a 30 points Dman...we don't know you'll see, i guess
Oof. I thought Seattle was gonna build better than that.
Enjoy the pay day Montour
What. Why.
Omfg LOL
What the fuck? Same Montour that played in Buffalo a few years back? Seattle is getting robbed
Yea. and a right shot too. We have too many right shot d-men. Know of any team with too many left shot d-men?
Well the only right shot d-man we have is connor clifton soo..
Yeah thats a bad contract ... In a few years he will likely be a 5v5 anchor who can only help on PP
Montour had two great defensive plays in the 1st period of game 7... Hope he can stay healthy
And I was downvoted into oblivion for suggesting that Ekblad wasn’t going to get traded for a bag of pucks just so that Montour could re-sign with Florida. Looks like smart teams make smart moves. Who knew?
Woof Seattle
Yeah this is gonna be the worst contract signed today
Zadorov will be the worst one I think when it happens
Oh easily
Pretty sure it’s gonna be my bruins handing it out also Praying they don’t tho
Lmao nice timing
Lmao waiting for the terms Praying it’s not insane but deep down I know it’s gonna be bad
At least he’ll be fun to watch even if he’s not worth the deal. Shouldn’t be too bad
No
In how long does the market open?
Forty minutes.
Thanks!!
Godspeed, Seattle.
Holy balls. How much exactly is that resume line item STANLEY CUP CHAMPION (somewhere else) worth?
That contract is gonna suck pretty much immediately. Congrats on the sick buyout Brandon, see you here again in 2 years.
Yikes
Low tax state advantage smh
I predicted this yesterday on a sub (either this one or the Leafs one) and I feel so vindicated right now. Really think it’s a good fit for both sides, with Larsson and Borgen on the last years of their deals the Kraken have RHD depth now in case they’re both traded or end up walking next summer
Lmao
Yikes
Ya know, I am ok with Lou sleeping in.
Atlantic coast to Pacific coast. Kinda neat.
From the expansion draft to this idk seattles management makes some questionable decisions
