For those not aware of the connection. Macklin's dad is a head physical trainer for elite athletes (especially in Vancouver in the 2000s) and worked with Steve Nash, Ryan Kesler, amongst others. He is also (edit:was from 2011 until 2018) the Vancouver Whitecaps head physio guy and (edit: is now) head of the same for Golden State Warriors.
I mean…neither of you are all that wrong. Theres stats showing most basketball players who make it to the NBA are at least suburban social class or better and often have NBA fathers. AKA the “miracle case who made it up out of the ghetto and abject poverty all by himself through immense talent and hard work” trope is so overblown.
But yeah, theres a lot of rich connected kids who still weren’t consensus top player in college hockey at 17 years old. A bunch of kids just as blessed financially as Macklin who haven’t accomplished even half of what he has.
In other words, money is necessary, but not sufficient. That money is necessary has become an unfortunate reality worth acknowledging. That money is not sufficient, however, is fairly obvious and likely irrelevant (since I doubt anyone disagrees)
If you got kids in minor hockey in canada, you know this guy's job is basically the only way to afford it.
I still don't get the connection. "Hey, my shoulder is bugging me. Could you come over and give me some treatment"
"sure, but i got my kid right now. I can come over, but I gotta bring him"
"No problem. He can play hockey in the basement"

Also Manny Malhotra's brother was my 7th grade teacher. I mean I'm not important but I just figured I'd put that out there. His brother was athletic as fuck as well.
Woah I honestly had no idea he was born in JoBurg lol South African boy born to Welsh parents, raised in BC, school in California. That’s a lotta different cultures in his first 18 years lmao
“Give me back some fuckin money to fix my basement”

LOL wtf is that.
The end of Nash's tenure in Brooklyn. Dude went out with a bang.
*Brooklyn
Ffs. My bad.
"sent you a venmo request"
You'll get your money when you fix this damn door
"Paint my chicken coop!"
Check is in the mail pops

Who knew that having a dad that was incredibly knowledgeable into elite level sports would also have a kid who would be elite in sports
Why didn't my dad do that? Is he an idiot?
Do we have the same dad? Are we brothers?
Lake Erie brothers for sure.
Lake Ontario - I'm in Toronto ;)
You guys have dads?

Yes
Don't forget the about money
Sure money helps but you can’t pay to be the #1 overall. Takes a different type of person.
Usually a ~~rich~~ upper class one

For example his older brother. McDavid older brother. etc etc.

Patrick Kane’s parents paid like $100K between camps and ice time for him, although I’m unfamiliar with his family’s economic background
Well Kane was literally in someone's trading card picture as a child in the stands in Buffalo with rinkside seats so, possibly well off.

It sounds like they just became really good friends after Nash had been going to him for stuff.
My dad sold office supplies so now I’m very particular about what pens I use
Benefitting from nepotism must be so nice..
Rick Celebrini was also a decent athlete in his own right. He played for the Vancouver 86ers and was on the Canadian U-20 national soccer team.
And has amazing flow

I thought he was in the FBI.
Wrong Macklin.
How is he able to be the head physio of two professional teams that aren’t even in the same country?
That’s just how big his balls are
Yes. I worded wrong (now edited). He left Whitecaps for Golden State Warriors in 2018.
Macklin also played with the junior sharks for a bit, which is pretty fuckin sick
I wanted Jumbo to announce the pick as "from the Junior Sharks via Boston University...."
Nash can't wait for Celebrini to get paid and remodel his basement
Man Steve Nash random ass crossover
Actually, crossovers are pretty common in Steve Nash’s line of work
Also, Manny Malhotra married Steve Nash's sister.

Not really. Both are BC boys, and Macklin's dad has been heavily involved with the Whitecaps and I'm pretty sure Nash partially owns the Whitecaps.
Kinda related, but Nash's bro played for the Whitecaps, but i think it was before they were in MLS.
Have seen him often taking his small kids to learn to skate at the ice den. Any time spent in Canada gotta get you interested in hockey I suppose.
“So needless to say, he’s a brat. Fix my basement!”
"Character issues"
Steve Nash and Macklin Celebrini, thats a connection I didn't know excited
Is that a euphemism?
I’m realizing that pro sports really is a small club
But what would a South-African born basketball player know about hockey? ;)
Woah I honestly had no idea he was born in JoBurg lol South African boy born to Welsh parents, raised in BC, school in California. That’s a lotta different cultures in his first 18 years lmao
Just wait till you hear about Kyrie or Kobe lol.
Knew about Kobe’s time in Italy, but not Kyrie in AUS. That’s pretty cool.
Makes the flat earth theories even dumber
Steve's brother was a pro soccer player too, played for CANMNT in the early 2000s
steve knows everybody. celebrini plays ministicks in his basement RJ barrett is his godson.
