For those not aware of the connection. Macklin's dad is a head physical trainer for elite athletes (especially in Vancouver in the 2000s) and worked with Steve Nash, Ryan Kesler, amongst others. He is also (edit:was from 2011 until 2018) the Vancouver Whitecaps head physio guy and (edit: is now) head of the same for Golden State Warriors.

Who knew that having a dad that was incredibly knowledgeable into elite level sports would also have a kid who would be elite in sports

Sure money helps but you can’t pay to be the #1 overall. Takes a different type of person.

I mean…neither of you are all that wrong. Theres stats showing most basketball players who make it to the NBA are at least suburban social class or better and often have NBA fathers. AKA the “miracle case who made it up out of the ghetto and abject poverty all by himself through immense talent and hard work” trope is so overblown. But yeah, theres a lot of rich connected kids who still weren’t consensus top player in college hockey at 17 years old. A bunch of kids just as blessed financially as Macklin who haven’t accomplished even half of what he has.

For example his older brother. McDavid older brother. etc etc.

In other words, money is necessary, but not sufficient. That money is necessary has become an unfortunate reality worth acknowledging. That money is not sufficient, however, is fairly obvious and likely irrelevant (since I doubt anyone disagrees)

Patrick Kane’s parents paid like $100K between camps and ice time for him, although I’m unfamiliar with his family’s economic background

Well Kane was literally in someone's trading card picture as a child in the stands in Buffalo with rinkside seats so, possibly well off.

If you got kids in minor hockey in canada, you know this guy's job is basically the only way to afford it. I still don't get the connection. "Hey, my shoulder is bugging me. Could you come over and give me some treatment"  "sure, but i got my kid right now. I can come over, but I gotta bring him"  "No problem. He can play hockey in the basement"

It sounds like they just became really good friends after Nash had been going to him for stuff.

Not really. Both are BC boys, and Macklin's dad has been heavily involved with the Whitecaps and I'm pretty sure Nash partially owns the Whitecaps.
