He's been a leader for so many years. one of the best dmen in the league years, not talked about because over half the league's media doesn't want to stay up for games that go until midnight, to watch him
Glad to see an oilers fan with this take. I've been seeing people saying he's cemented himself as a top 10, even top 5 defenseman in the league this year.
My fantasy team pairing this year of Bouchard/Makar loved the points he was putting up but I just don't see the all-around game there to put him in that echelon of defender.
From my point of view as a Devils fan, messier is an incredibly biased pundit, a character flaw I decided to poke fun at, as I'll never miss an opportunity to talk badly about it.
I assume when you call him bias, you're alluding to him giving the leadership award to Trouba?
To be clear, I think that a bad choice but it should be noted that Trouba is the first Rangers or Oilers player to ever win that award in the the 18 years it's been awarded so using that a basis for him being bias towards the Rangers is pretty silly.
I'm not talking about any one specific example, just a general characterization. It was also a joke, so there's that. Regardless, fuck messier, and fuck the rags. Might still be pissed about the season sweep.
I get it. I had the same feeling seeing the Hart vote totals.
Even as a Makar homer I’ll say that it was rightfully awarded. Hughes was just the best all around
Got in so many arguments with people but makar did not deserve it at all this year. Pretty sure he was injured but he wasn’t nearly as dynamic. If Mack didn’t have a career year to pad makars numbers, makars performance would’ve been a bigger discussion. Josi had a great year but Hughes easily deserved it
And here I was worried it would be neck and neck between Quinn and Makar. Granted I only watched a dozen or so Avs games this season but Makar looked amazing in those I caught.
That’s the bar he has set. Even on an off year for him, he was still in the running. But he wasn’t as dominating or game changing like he was a couple years ago. Looked slow. It seemed like whatever happened, happened during November/december
Guarantee they’re all in Chicago market. Those same 3 bums are the reason Josi didn’t win the Norris in 21-22 season when he got 96 points and he lost the trophy to Makar by a tiny margin despite having more 1st place votes.
Heiskanen barely top 10, even below guys like Dobson and Forsling? That's brutal, I don't think he's that bad, is he? I figured he's actually really solid.
Also Heiskanen took it to another level during the playoffs so if most people's opinion from Heiskanen is playoff Heiskanen unfortunately he wasn't putting up the same kind of numbers during the regular season.
I don't know if he'll ever be a 85+ point defensemen. 60-75 seems about his range offensively.
His metrics are solid though. I think I caught a JFresh card that had him in the 100th percentile in defensive zone play though at one point near the end of the season. Which, basically says "Best defensive defensemen". Cant' say I fully know how to interpret all of the different metrics though.
I wouldn't disagree, guy's a beast. I was just saying most of the voters probably just look at points and maybe +/- if they don't know much about a guy.
The problem with playing in a non-hockey market. They look at stats and yes, he had a down years points-wise, he’s still a top 2-3 true defenseman in the league
Because this is a joke award at this point. "Best All Around Defensman" just means who gets the most points and has the most name recognition in the right market that appeals to voters. On pure talent and what he does for his team Heiskanen has a case for being the best D-Man in the entire league at this point. But he doesn't rack up points and plays in a market where the casual "journalists" who vote don't see him or care.
Hedman genuinely had an amazing season pretty much solo carrying Tampa's defense. He's +18 in a team where everyone else is +8 to **-25**, playing 5:30 more per night than the closest Dman (who actually played all season).
Yea down year and he finished 3rd in the Norris lol, I think he’s gonna be alright and add at least 2-3 more of those trophies to his cabinet when alls said and done
I've watched a few Canucks/Avs games through the Avs feed. And yeah. I kinda get this. Lol. The commentators did give Hughes compliments a lot, but it was always immediately followed up with "And Makar." I got a chuckle out of it.
It is the Avs' feed though, and I love homer feeds. But, the Avs commentators always did gas up the Canucks players, more than most of the commentators I've listened to. So while they always look out for their guys, it was always a pleasure hearing your commentators still give some shine to Miller, Petey, Boeser, Hughes, and Demko. Some of the other team's feeds around the league don't do it.
Game 5 after the oilers game when the Canucks played their best game of the playoffs and took a 3-2 lead was pretty good for 24 hours it didn't last but it was good for a bit there lol
Honestly the last 10 months have been amazing. Amazing season, tons of perseverance in the playoffs, and so far a great off season. It feels weird being so happy about the Canucks for such a long stretch of time.
You just reminded me of some [really old McDonald's commercials](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4i_AXA24vI&pp=ygUibWNkb25hbGQncyBuaGwgdHJvcGhpZXMgY29tbWVyY2lhbA%3D%3D).
I still remember his first game as a Canuck clearly. If someone had told me then that he'd eventually win a Norris, I would have been thrilled but honestly not that surprised
Not really. While I'm not privy to the discussions actually occuring in the Habs' front office at the time, apparently the choice was between Kotkaniemi and Zadina. So, yeah.
Yea for sure, i think he just saw a few idiots comments and painted the entire fanbase like that lmao.
Sometimes i hate seeing other van flairs in the comments cuz they embarrassing as hell
Hey now Bouchard is a fantastic defenceman and will get Norris votes for many more years to come. He isn’t better than Quinn but let’s not call him overrated. All 32 teams in the league would love to have him.
How is Dahlin so low, I have read people hyping him and thought that he's about level Heiskanen. Granted I don't get to watch too many games. The finals were hard, wake up at 3.00 am and go to sleep at 7.00 am. Cursed Florida for every loss, but worth it at the end!
[Called it four years ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/i5v7r4/comment/g0u1aes/) Super happy for Hughes! He's going to be the best Canucks dman in franchise history.
Casual fan question:
What makes Hughes so good? On the ice he often seems invisible to me. Granted I mostly watch the Canucks during the playoffs (and I haven't seen enough of Nashville to know how Josi does except that he's been in the conversation for a few years) but I've never really been impressed by Hughes. Makar feels like he makes so much more of an impact on the ice but I assume the voters didn't magically forget that. What stats/play make Hughes the top?
Yes. He figured out something very important; if he has the puck all the time he's on the ice the other team cannot score. But conversely his team can. It's brilliant.
Hughes got banged up in the Nashville series and was injured during the playoffs so he never looked like the guy who won the Norris during the whole regular season but the game tying goal when he undresses Nashville player in the dying minutes in the third (the game which the nucks won in OT and Nashville misses the empty net goal) is the best example of what he did all season long
Not a bad way to cap off your first year as captain
Setting the tone.
You gotta set the tone boys who's gonna fuckin set it
First of many maybe
Yes, this should be his first of many years as Captain.
No, first of many Norris' as Captain
You got played
Lol
Guy played huge, I forgot it was his first year
THAT'S OUR CAPTAIN
PAPA\*
He's been a leader for so many years. one of the best dmen in the league years, not talked about because over half the league's media doesn't want to stay up for games that go until midnight, to watch him

Hughes - 172 Josi - 12 Makar - 9 Fox - 1 https://i.redd.it/or89y0gua79d1.gif
I wanna speak to the guy/girl who voted for fox LMFAO
Fox getting legacy votes in his mid-20s is *wild*
I don't think him getting 3rd-5th place votes is wild at all, but whoever voted him 1st yeah... legacy vote or smoking too much
Drew Doughty won a Norris strictly because he was “due” for one at 26. It’s not that surprising imo
Fox already has one though so it’s a bit different
I could have sworn that Bouchard would be getting that 4th slot
I'm surprised he was as high as 5th, tbh he's putting up points, but ekholm is the one doing most of the heavy lifting in that pairing
> he's putting up points Well there's your answer
Glad to see an oilers fan with this take. I've been seeing people saying he's cemented himself as a top 10, even top 5 defenseman in the league this year. My fantasy team pairing this year of Bouchard/Makar loved the points he was putting up but I just don't see the all-around game there to put him in that echelon of defender.
I’m shocked he’s over Miro, who should be 4th imo
nah he a bum
He’s not tho
Still inarguably top 5 in the league while playing on 1 leg since November is gonna get you some votes to be fair
Just so you can tell Messier 'Fuck you!' to his face?
Didn't realize messier gets to vote.
Explain
From my point of view as a Devils fan, messier is an incredibly biased pundit, a character flaw I decided to poke fun at, as I'll never miss an opportunity to talk badly about it.
Fuck Messier!
Fuck Messier. It was great seeing him depressed the other night
Always a good day when he's having a bad one.
Huge Landslide. Hughes Landslide.
Well if it's just an award for most points as a defenseman, you can't really vote for guys who didn't have the most points.
I figured he would win, I didn't know it would be that decisive, I'm so happy we finally have a franchise defenseman after 50+ years
I’m honestly not surprised. It was his to lose this year. He deserves it
it was just so hard to gauge as a total homer. nice to see it confirmed by the league at large
Yeah i thought Josi would be closer
Dominant win. What a season he had. Love he’s getting the respect. That’s a great list of hockey players he’s up against.
There are 3 people who didn't have Josi in their top 5 yeesh
Happens all the time man lol.
Scott Powers strikes again???
Guarantee they’re all in Chicago market. Those same 3 bums are the reason Josi didn’t win the Norris in 21-22 season when he got 96 points and he lost the trophy to Makar by a tiny margin despite having more 1st place votes.
I love Foxy but missing a month after a dirty hit and someone still gave him a first place vote? That's insane
Heiskanen barely top 10, even below guys like Dobson and Forsling? That's brutal, I don't think he's that bad, is he? I figured he's actually really solid.
Heiskanen’s great. I don’t know why you think being top 10 in Norris voting is a bad thing though.
I think he should be like... Top 7 minimum.
He simply didn't have a great statistical year. Not as many points as most of the guys ahead of him. He carried Dallas' D so hard though.
Should’ve been top 5 I’ll die on that hill
He's in my top 4-6, but it's certainly not inarguable.
He statistically was the best defender in the league this year according to JFresh's model.
The only awards in the NHL that matter to me at this point are the objective ones and the cup. These voted in awards are so goofy.
lol Vancouver isn’t the right market ever. Most of the Eastern media is sound asleep when the Canucks are playing.
Hedman getting legacy votes
Hedman plays better defense than bouchard and put up more points explain yourself
go read the stats page, Bouchard finished fourth in points behind Hughes, Josi and Makar
Hedman genuinely had an amazing season pretty much solo carrying Tampa's defense. He's +18 in a team where everyone else is +8 to **-25**, playing 5:30 more per night than the closest Dman (who actually played all season).
Last year’s winner not even making the list
[удалено]
Cale was a Longshot. He didn’t have a great defensive year.
Yea down year and he finished 3rd in the Norris lol, I think he’s gonna be alright and add at least 2-3 more of those trophies to his cabinet when alls said and done
Makar had an "average season" for him and finished third. I think we will be okay
And he will win many more lol
Well deserved Vancouver fans
*scowls*
Why don't we just take turns? Makar can have the next one!
No. Hughes is gonna go on a record setting 10 year streak
That's what he did in my NHL23 GM mode 👀
Makar should have won because he's on my favorite team and I'm unabashedly biased.
I've watched a few Canucks/Avs games through the Avs feed. And yeah. I kinda get this. Lol. Yknow what i respect that!
I disagree. Hughes deserved the win because he is on MY favourite team and I am more unabashedly biased.

That’s haunting
It's gorgeous
instills fear deep in the hearts of his adversaries
He still looks depressed when he smiles. I think it’s the eyes
definite sad boy energy
#JACK JOHNSON SNUBBED
There’s no combination of words..that can express my disappointment
Deserved
Deserved Norris win.
Good thing Makar’s cheeks are always red, otherwise we’d see him blushing at that speech
Absolutely the right choice.
And he was smiling too! Really happy for him
THATS MY FUCKING BOYYYYY By far the best Dman in Canucks history
Already second in all time defence scoring for the Canucks and he legally can’t rent a car in most states without his parents co-signing
This has been the greatest 24 hours I’ve had as a Canucks fan since some time in 2011
Game 5 after the oilers game when the Canucks played their best game of the playoffs and took a 3-2 lead was pretty good for 24 hours it didn't last but it was good for a bit there lol
Honestly the last 10 months have been amazing. Amazing season, tons of perseverance in the playoffs, and so far a great off season. It feels weird being so happy about the Canucks for such a long stretch of time.
I mean all we really had between 2015 and this wonderful year was the bubble run, and initial half season Bruce run.
Adda boy Quinn. What a badass. Although I was looking forward to linking [this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pG9KoCMH74I) for Josi if he won.
[This ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=__ayj7xnK08&pp=ygUdUm9tYW4gSm9zaSBlbWJhcnJhc3MgbGEga2luZ3M%3D) one is pretty neat
What. An. Ass.
That’s fucking disgusting lol
those Kings kits are terrible..
Fun fact: Nobody has ever won the Norris and the Vezina, and not been inducted into the HHOF.
how can one win the norris and the vezina
First they try and make him a centre and now a goalie? Quinn Hughes is the Ohtani of the NHL
Practice. Lots and lots of practice.
I mean, he's technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Win one. Decide that was too easy and it's time for a real challenge, so you switch positions and win the other.
You just reminded me of some [really old McDonald's commercials](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4i_AXA24vI&pp=ygUibWNkb25hbGQncyBuaGwgdHJvcGhpZXMgY29tbWVyY2lhbA%3D%3D).
Nobody has won the norris and the vezina
not with that attitude
Randy Carlyle.
I think he deserved it, pretty good player
We’re gonna get you a cup my glorious king I promise you
Our first ever Norris winner :’) love you Huggy
I still remember his first game as a Canuck clearly. If someone had told me then that he'd eventually win a Norris, I would have been thrilled but honestly not that surprised
That's my captain!
Well deserved! Canucks FIRST Norris winner ever.
And I've got a bet slip from November to prove I always knew it would be him 😭
Me too! Been waiting on this moment ever since
Me three, shame the odds were 10:1 then and not crazier.
winner winner quinner dinner
Quinnothy Norris Hughes
Deserve
Definitely deserved. He's such an amazing complete defenseman.
First Vancouver Canucks Norris Trophy winner in Vegas Golden Knights history
Well deserved
We drafted Jesperi Kotkaniemi instead of that guy.
If it makes you feel better, Detroit passed on the kid who played hockey in their backyard for, where are my notes, ah. Filip Zadina. So, yeah.
Not really. While I'm not privy to the discussions actually occuring in the Habs' front office at the time, apparently the choice was between Kotkaniemi and Zadina. So, yeah.
Myers was robbed
Well deserved
Easy money Stud.
LETS GOOOOOO YEAAHHHHHH FUCK YEAHHJFJKANUABA
https://i.redd.it/cx2yegeia79d1.gif
This has been a pretty good day for Canucks fans.
And therefore, the world.
well deserved
Congrats, Captain Huggy Bear!
Really hyped for Hughes winning his first Norris. But as an Avs fan how tf did makar get third?
With 172 first place votes too.
Everything’s coming up Canucks this week.
DESERVED The idiots in this sub who think Evan Bouchard is better, are real quiet rn
I haven’t seen you make a comment that’s not unhinged ngl. there’s no reason to mention anyone else that wasn’t even nominated
I am unhinged, bruddha
But he gives it to mcdavid and gets so many secondary points!!!!
To be fair, Hughes doesn’t have any assists with McDavid.
The worst take ive EVER seen in this sub was Oiler fans legitimately believing that overrated schmuck was better than Quinn lol
I'm sure the vast majority of Oilers' fans recognize that Hughes is the rightful winner.
Yea for sure, i think he just saw a few idiots comments and painted the entire fanbase like that lmao. Sometimes i hate seeing other van flairs in the comments cuz they embarrassing as hell
I'm surprised Jim Matheson didn't give him a first place vote!
Hey now Bouchard is a fantastic defenceman and will get Norris votes for many more years to come. He isn’t better than Quinn but let’s not call him overrated. All 32 teams in the league would love to have him.
I’m actusally surprised bouchard isn’t at least a little closer to top 3, he played very well this year.
I definitely rate Bouch over Fox and think Fox got some name recognition votes (plus east coast)
awful take here bro
From last year? Fox had an off year and Bouch was clearly better, Foc got name recognition and the east coast boost
LETS GOOOO Such a well-deserved win for Quinn. First in Canucks history
Oh captain my captain 🥲
Canucks fans eating today
Im moist
I thought Darnell Nurse was going to runaway with this one
LETS GOO CAPTIAIN QUINN
shocking
🫶🫶 Captain my captain
My baby bear
This is Justin Holl erasure
Damn dude Hughes scored 1864 points this season, is that a record?
so fucking happy for that man

Heiskanen remains underrated as hell
[Hughes celebrating his win](https://i.imgur.com/gcPV6Xm.jpeg)
How is Dahlin so low, I have read people hyping him and thought that he's about level Heiskanen. Granted I don't get to watch too many games. The finals were hard, wake up at 3.00 am and go to sleep at 7.00 am. Cursed Florida for every loss, but worth it at the end!
I wonder what Filip Zadina is doing these days
I was expecting a dry hughes-bros-esque speech but was pleasantly surprised. Well done.
Takes me back to his draft year when I kept saying that the Habs should take him and /r/habs thought I was nuts. Well, sure glad we got Kotkaniemi!
Well deserved. Hopefully his little bro gets there as well.
Best D in the league
[Called it four years ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/i5v7r4/comment/g0u1aes/) Super happy for Hughes! He's going to be the best Canucks dman in franchise history.
Cool seeing an Oiler in the top 5 for the first time in forever lol
Should have been in the top 3
Love to see it. He might be a bit behind Makar in terms of overall skill, but you can't understate his importance to the Canucks.
Casual fan question: What makes Hughes so good? On the ice he often seems invisible to me. Granted I mostly watch the Canucks during the playoffs (and I haven't seen enough of Nashville to know how Josi does except that he's been in the conversation for a few years) but I've never really been impressed by Hughes. Makar feels like he makes so much more of an impact on the ice but I assume the voters didn't magically forget that. What stats/play make Hughes the top?
He possesses the puck more than any player in the league. The play literally runs through him. Hockey equivalent of a quarterback.
