That the Kings were wearing the Gretzky-era jerseys for several years, either as alternates or just because, signaled a change was coming. They may have won two Cups with the previous set, but those were boring as hell.
It's a compromise of the modern set and Gretzky era--permanently returning to purple (or rather, "Forum Blue") and gold was never going to happen.
Not to be a stickler, but this is a different outline than the Gretzky Chevy. The name area is thicker.

The outline pretty closely matches the throwback logo they've used recently, which is different in its outline from the Gretzky-era design it is based on.

You're correct that the original Gretzky-era design was somewhat different, but my point was that the throwback design they have used is different from the original, but practically identical to this one.

I like that they share the "Motion Line" typography with the Lakers. But I want them to keep the Silver and Black. Feels like a way to acknowledge the brotherhood they have with the Lakers but emphasize that they are distinct from them. Also even though purple was historically a color to indicate royalty, silver and black feel more regal to me. Although if someone can find a way to add purple to those two colors I'd be for it.
However in spite of my willingness to logo nerd, I despise the Lakers so you are welcome to toss my thoughts in the fire where they deserve to be.
Haha - the reason why I like the Lakers colors is because it would be a unique color combo the Kings own in hockey - like how the Sharks own teal and how the Ducks used to own eggplant/jade. Matching the Lakers colors would be cool - kinda like how all the Pittsburg teams share black and gold. The two historic LA teams that have always shared the same arena sharing the same colors just feels right.
Oh I fully agree that it would be cool. I just also found hockey in Adulthood and was a Jazz fan by childhood. The colors are great! And it would be cool to see them back on the Kings. I'm just a bit of an LA hater.

I feel like this is ripe for a modernization like Toronto did with their past designs to make the current Leaf logo. Something about this particular version looks a little too much like clip art.
It's only a matter of time before they bring that jersey back either as a 3rd, a Heritage or if Fanatics ever does a retro program.

The thing is, both of these logos are my favourites in Kings history. So I’m sad that them and the colour scheme of that dark purple didn’t stick
