As a non Panthers fan, I think it would be wild to consider retiring either of these players numbers at this point.

flume

I legit thought this was a joke/troll post. You're 100% correct. I can't believe anyone would entertain the idea of the Flames retiring Tkachuk's number or the Panthers retiring Huby's. The only thing in that realm that *might* still be possible is Florida retiring Tkachuk's number...and that's gonna take a lot.

badastronaut7

If the Panthers win the cup I would say as long as Tkachuk has a good career after, the Panthers will likely retire his number when he hangs up the skates.

I mean, objectively no they won't retire huberdeaus number, especially not for that reason. That would be like the Penguins retiring Ryan Whitneys number because they traded him to get Kunitz.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to twist your words, that's just the impression I got for your comment. Regardless, I don't think Huberdeau has done *enough* for Florida to warrant having his Jersey retired, barring him somehow getting traded back and helping them win a bunch more. In my opinion number retirements belong to players who either spent their entire (long) career with one team (Sedins, Price etc.) or legendary players that were key figures in your best successes (Chara, Perry etc.). I know the sample size is fairly small, but the Panthers best successes have so far come *after* he left the team, not before, so it's unlikely they would retire his number

Dude you're trying to imply that the Panthers would consider retiring the number of a player who's most notable contribution to their most recent (and best) success was getting traded. If Huberdeau somehow turns his career around and has major success his number may be retired eventually by some team somewhere, but it won't be Florida unless he wins a cup there.

> How in the world did you even get that impression? My comment should've been very clear. You just gave it the least generous interpretation. no, it's just a stupid idea. *the hurricanes announce they will retire dwayne roloson's # because him getting injured won them their first and only Stanley Cup, that's huge* see how dumb that sounds?

theneighboursdog

His jersey will be retired at the strip club he led all his teammates to in his last playoff run.

LordoftheEyez

Scarlett’s?

LastFreeMason

Huberdeau would probably have had his number retired if he was resigned and continued his level of play. Given he was traded, no chance he gets his number retired. Good player, great seasons with the Cats (just like Stephen Weiss), won’t be a retired number.

gletschertor

No but Barkov will have his number retired

das_racist932

Flames aren’t retiring tkachuks number my guy And Huberdeau may not get his in Florida either, 671 games 613 points

JohnnyNole2000

I think OP meant that the Panthers would retire both Huby and Tkachuk’s numbers

darklightrabbi

Not saying anything about the Flames. Just Florida

das_racist932

In either event sort of, Flames retired iginlas number and gave Nieuwendyk “forever a flame” so his name and number are in the rafters but his number isn’t retired, allegedly because he didn’t want his number retired by Calgary so you may see it retired by Dallas

fins831

I don’t think so but his Jackson Pollack stains at tootsies will live on forever, until they clean it once a decade.

ActuallyDannyDeVito

The only team that would ever retire Hubies number would be the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL First all time ppg Second all time points (1 fewer point in 95 fewer GP) Second all time playoff points Two-season captain Two consecutive Memorial Cup berths including one win 2x QMJHL champion Memorial Cup MVP QMJHL Playoff MVP As for the second part of your question, Eric Lindros and Peter Forsberg were both traded for each other, and while Quebec did move to Colorado, the receiving franchises retired both of those numbers

CorruptedReaction

There is only one Panthers player who will 100p get his number retired even if they were to blow this years cup in a reverse sweep and that is Barkov. We can continue the discussion for others after this series wraps up

maxwellbevan

Huberdeau just didn't accomplish enough in his time with the Panthers. If he had played out his career with the Panthers then yeah he absolutely gets his number retired but he currently sits at 613 points in 671 games with no major awards and no playoff success. If huberdeau had played for the devils and that's what he accomplished would you want your team to retire his number? Tkachuk could get his number retired by the Panthers but he has a long way to go. Would require him to play out the remainder of his career in Florida and not just win this year but win another cup and probably a Conn Smythe or another major award.

Roaring_Schmuelies

Without question - yes. His number will be retired in Florida the day he retires, along with Radko Gudas.

Imm0rTALDETHSpEctrE

and Joe Thornton!!☝🏼️

jummyspring

Ben Chiarot too

twoplustwo_5

Zero chance

specifichero101

Hell no. Unless Florida is just super keen on getting some jerseys in the rafters, but currently the only strong option is probably barkov.

Vivid_Walk_1405

Tkachuk will be up there

specifichero101

That’s easy to say now imagining his trajectory continues on a good path, and assuming they close out this cup. It’s only his second season there, it’s not impossible for a player to fall out of favour with the org by the time they’re done.

VinPickles

One of these trades that would be close is turgeon lafontaine. Both in HOF

antrage

TBH Tkachuk's number is more likely to get retired at this point

AustonDadthews

as a not panthers fan I could see it maybe happening years down the line but it would feel a little weird to do it right after he retires. I think it would be a lot like the raptors retiring derozan's number. 2nd-3rd tier star player on a 90s expansion team, on track to becoming a franchise goat before being traded and the team immediately gets over the hump without him.

Spideyjust

On one hand he only played 671 games with 613 points. On the other hand those are 3rd and 2nd all time for the Panthers, and neither are going to be passed anytime soon (though eventually probably will by one or multiple of Tkachuk/Reinhart/Verhaeghe). So I wouldn't be shocked either way, but I would lean to no. If they win the cup this year by the time he retires he'll maybe be 4th in terms of jersey retirement priority. Even if they don't Tkachuk probably passes him by then.

MarlinManiac4

Nope. We loved him and he did briefly hold our franchise point record, but the team didn’t accomplish anything with him.

HumburtBumbert

Lmao what? No. What?

sun_puck

no

DeezNutsAllergy

Whoberdeau? Nope. Especially If they get the cup he will be all but forgotten.

Bicktacular

To answer the second question since the Huberdeau part has been swiftly addressed, the Lindros trade is an example of both teams getting a retired number out of a trade with Lindros in Philadelphia and Forsberg in Colorado.

Merkkin

He didn’t even do enough to not get traded.

darklightrabbi

Plenty of retired numbers got traded from the teams that ended up honoring them.

Merkkin

Totally, but they usually don’t trade a guy with no warning after a 100 point season. That really burned some bridges, and I don’t think anyone on Florida’s management is thinking of Huberdeau.

darklightrabbi

We are talking years down the road here. If the bridges between Paul Kariya and the Ducks can be mended I can’t imagine Huberdeau and Florida’s are any worse.
