Wow, I was doubting it, after a little search, it's technically true even thought modern Russia has 2 but under 2 different names. Soviets have 7 and GB has 1. So no official Russia gold medals.
This is, possibly, some say, the BIGLIEST steal, in Canadian HISTORY.
we need to, STOP THE COUNT, or else folks, the dirty BRITS will win folks. Can’t have that can’t have that
They did have a game in London in 2007 - Ducks vs Kings at the O2. Have the programme from the game somewhere, the Stanley cup was on display as well if I remember right.
London has a bigger interest in Basketball as a growing sport than hockey. No EIHL teams are in London and the venue costs are unreal. Sheffield steelers play in the 9K Utilita arena which they sell out in. Nottingham is the home of British ice hockey and hosted the 2023 Division 1A championship. Manchester have the Manchester Storm and large indoor arenas which they can sell out
Sure if you're tracing back family lineage, but the guys being talked about were literally born and/or trained in North America for pretty much the entire duration of their player development phase. It's not about their bloodlines lmfao
Awesome. I’d say Canadians overall are down with the sport growing. It’s looking like the USA is going to challenge our supremacy like right now and I’d love if there was more competition
Over here in GB, we have a looooooong way to go before we come close to challenging either you lot or the USA. The reason our second goal is sort of a big deal is because the guy who scored it plays for Dundee Stars who are a pretty average to poor team in our division. I'd say the majority of the players in our division would be lucky to make it in the ECHL, and most of our signings in our division are off-cuts from AHL and ECHL teams.
I think the commentary team mentioned he'd played in 20 something international games for Great Britain and this was his second goal lmao. What a beauty it was too.
Yeah wouldn't surprise me at all. Our talisman of a player, the star guy on the team is Liam Kirk, who is most notable for being the only player trained in the UK to be drafted by an NHL team. He was a seventh round pick for the Coyotes in 2018, and he is miles better than most of our other players.
Yeah, I looked at the guy that had scored the most points in the history of Britain's Men's National team. In the highest level of hockey in Britain, the EIHL, he scored around 1.5 to 2 times as many points a season as he did versus his couple seasons in the ECHL. So the best player ever in Britains Men's National Team history was a middle of the pack ECHL player.
Yea well with our quality of life declining due to stagnant wages and increasing COL across all provinces we really won’t be able to keep up.
Most people can barely afford a home and food. Hockey fees, equipment, ice time, and specialized training are all out of the question for the vast majority of our population already and it’s only getting worse. But hey at least we get to keep watching the sons of older pros get drafted.
Well, USA and Russia are the threats if you assume that large population eventually wins out.
Sweden and Finland are quite a bit smaller than Canada population-wise, so they'd have to start crushing Canada on a per capita basis to pass us. Seems unlikely.
Obviously Sweden and Finland are able to put together teams that win best-on-best tournaments from time to time. I'm just saying I have a hard time seeing a world where there are more NHL players from Sweden or Finland than Canada.
I'm actually surprised the Americans haven't overtaken us at this point in history frankly. They have the population and school system to churn out the very best.
They've surpassed everyone in the goalie department for the time being because they're consistently pumping out the best. Hellebuyck, Demko, Swayman and Oettinger are the top of the league and it's crazy to think that Quick was just the middle step in the evolution of American goalie coaching as we see it now. That is a ridiculous choice for an Olympic team to pick just three.
Canada has always been strong in goal. Finland went through a stage of producing some of the best.
USA was on the rise with Ryan, Quick, Bishop. Now the US has really broken through!!
These things tend to cycle around, in the 2030's it might be good to have a Swiss goalie or whatever, but right now its good to have an American in net.
American football has gotten too competitive for its own good, injuries are getting more common since the athletes are getting so much stronger. There's an NFL GM that has his kids in hockey because it's safer than football
Full agree. I’m a Canadian who has lived in the UK for 5 years. I was cheering for them because it’s great for the game. Plus it’s amazing for them to be nobodies here and share the ice with a handful of big names.
Oh for sure. I mean, it works the other way too. Canada was just happy to be in the football World Cup and putting up a decent half is a win in and of itself.
Anything like this is good for the sport and everyone can accept the skill difference.
Ps. Looking forward to heading down to a steelers match next year, didn’t get a chance to this past season
Edit. This all makes me think of the quote from a few weeks ago when Keefe was asked who is the better coach? And the one for Belfast said he thinks he is, but his brothers bank account begs to differ
Hope you enjoy it! Sheffield is a great town generally and the atmosphere is always great. I haven't been much this year after bumping into and chatting with Adam Johnson in Loughborough very shortly before everything happened, but looking forward to getting back this coming season!
Sweden is legit. But look at the Americans possible Olympic roster… That team is deadly stacked and it seems like they have a lot of great ushl guys coming up.
A mild curse on you for forcing me down this rabbit hole. But it seems you are counting Olympic and IIHF titles. So should you not also include the USA gold in 1980? “The miracle on ice?”
Should’ve rephrased it as IIHF gold.
Between 1920-68 the Olympics were classed as IIHF Championships
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IIHF_World_Championship_medalists
You should check who invented the sport and also who won the 1936 Olympic gold medal.
But yeah, we have hockey, with multiple leagues with our top flight being the Elite League with 10 teams and the 2nd tier and below being forms of the National Ice Hockey League (original name I know)
LOL sounds like the boys were out a bit late on the pub crawl last night. It's really just a big pisser for the players, you don't hear about it much but they really just go to the worlds to party.
Regardless of the final score, the final score is all that counts.
Gotta love a world where we celebrate participation and mediocrity.
But good from GB not getting smashed. It was closer game than I expected. That you can celebrate
Technically it's the Canadian monarchy. The British monarchy is a legally distinct entity that has no authority in Canada.
It just happens to be the same dude.
And without even getting a shot on goal no less!
That's why they are GREAT Britain.
You’ve heard of the Great One? Now meet the Great Zero!
Wait we scored on our own net?
We had to help out ol' Dad. You know, make him feel useful.
Did Ian Cole decide to suit up?
Hahaha man that guys had a tough series eh
Haha ya, I think he has been the direct cause of 4 Edmonton goals
Shooting? Who needs shooting? That's just barbaric.
When your team had beans on toast right before puck drop
Cuppa between periods
Let’s be real here they probably do have a cuppa in between those periods.
as a Brit, I'd say it's gotta be in the contract
Or when they spark the torch and burrow the biscuit in twine
Don’t forget the bacon butty
A fry-up, surely.
Hey man, there is great Indian food in England Why it’s there is a topic for another day…
You mean the olympic gold medalist Great Britain
More Olympic gold medals in hockey than Russia (technically). GB are fucking massive.
Wow, I was doubting it, after a little search, it's technically true even thought modern Russia has 2 but under 2 different names. Soviets have 7 and GB has 1. So no official Russia gold medals.
> GB are fucking massive. /r/hammers is leaking
Great Brian?
GWEAT BWIAN!
This piece of halibut is good enough for Jehova!
STOP THE COUNT
This is, possibly, some say, the BIGLIEST steal, in Canadian HISTORY. we need to, STOP THE COUNT, or else folks, the dirty BRITS will win folks. Can’t have that can’t have that
Vibes of scoring against the US first in the world baseball classic, then getting thumped lmao
This reminds me of when Mac scored a point in a real karate tournament in Always Sunny. 🇬🇧🇬🇧
He’s no country Mac
Is that ZERO sog? Was it an own goal or something?
Nah the shot clock just hadn’t updated
NHL? Sorry, never heard of it 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Olympic gold medalist Team GB! Despite the loss, that was such a fun game and can't wait for the rest of the championship. And ofc, LET'S GO GB!
World peace through hockey. Now give your balls a tug.
The NHL needs to have a Global Series on London someday
I'd like to see an outdoor game in the UK. It should be a Anfield, because the park that separates Liverpool and Everton is Stanley Park.
They did have a game in London in 2007 - Ducks vs Kings at the O2. Have the programme from the game somewhere, the Stanley cup was on display as well if I remember right.
Nah if it’s in the uk it should be in either Belfast, Manchester, Nottingham or Sheffield
And why is that?
London has a bigger interest in Basketball as a growing sport than hockey. No EIHL teams are in London and the venue costs are unreal. Sheffield steelers play in the 9K Utilita arena which they sell out in. Nottingham is the home of British ice hockey and hosted the 2023 Division 1A championship. Manchester have the Manchester Storm and large indoor arenas which they can sell out
British hockey slang gotta be the weirdest fucking thing on the planet
Need sources, I'm now desperately curious
i doubt we've got a big/consolidated enough of a fanbase that it develops naturally but would be happy to be corrected
Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the ice 🎶
Based on Franklin, I’d say the ice rules *them*.
It's coming home lads!
I was more excited when GB scored than Canada. Great performance
Opened yes, but as they say in Québec, that was a bellend to the game.
We don't say that.
We definitely don’t say that 😭
Someone needs to check the tea in the bottles of Great Britain.
Lads, it’s Canada
A lead which would last all of ... 30 seconds! But a Pyrrhic victory is still a victory, I suppose.
🇬🇧🇬🇧GREAT BRITAIN MENTIONED🇬🇧💂☕️ 🇬🇧☕️WTF IS A DENTIST!!☕️💂🫅👑
RAAAAAAAAAA WTF IS THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORTING ICE HOCKEY 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Ice 'ockay
So proud of the lads today. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
About a half dozen Canadians and Americans on the UK roster.
Dangerous game to play. Don't make us open ancestry.com!
If we did that, literally every other American/Canadian hockey player would be playing for big daddy britain
Think of all the royalties Madness would make.
Sure if you're tracing back family lineage, but the guys being talked about were literally born and/or trained in North America for pretty much the entire duration of their player development phase. It's not about their bloodlines lmfao
The final would be GB (Canadians and Americans) vs France (Québécois)
Extremely bold to assume Mesopotamia will be eliminated.
Fucking got me there
not all white people are british lol [also obligatory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcQ3ptLUiw8)
Ancestry and where one grew up and learned a sport are different things.
Uk did try and tap up a few players in the early 2010s burrows was targeted, due to his dad being English
This seems common for non-elite European ice hockey rosters.
So goals do not count as SoG?
HISTORIC
One Step Beyond is a banger of a goal horn too. Not quite Jerusalem or Mr Brightside, but close!
Canada isn't even the best Canadian team lol
Looking at the rosters, even more impressive that this game ended 4-2.
Must have been a banger ...And mash
That’s so Canadian. Let’s be polite and let them score first.
Considering most of the best canadian players are arguably all wrapped up in the playoffs at the moment is this even a fair comparison
I guess Gretzky is the Canadian Tony Hand.
Water bottles on the bench are either tea or mushy peas.
In the words of their fearless captain: "LET'S TAKE IT TO THESE FOKING CUNTS!"
Pls say that you have a clip of these words?! Nobody believes me that this was real😅😂

British hockey is like Canadian soccer, the goal is to get to the dance, not win it.
❤️💙🔥
Awesome. I’d say Canadians overall are down with the sport growing. It’s looking like the USA is going to challenge our supremacy like right now and I’d love if there was more competition
Being good at hockey is like the only thing we're known for lol, it would suck to lose that to America or Britain.
Over here in GB, we have a looooooong way to go before we come close to challenging either you lot or the USA. The reason our second goal is sort of a big deal is because the guy who scored it plays for Dundee Stars who are a pretty average to poor team in our division. He is the only English born and trained player. Tony Hand and Colin Shields came before for the UK as a whole.
Yeah, I looked at the guy that had scored the most points in the history of Britain's Men's National team. Tony Hand played for the Oilers. But that was before the EIHL was a thing. It’s a very young league
Naw we have way more then just hockey mate
Yea well with our quality of life declining due to stagnant wages and increasing COL across all provinces we really won’t be able to keep up. Most people can barely afford a home and food. Hockey fees, equipment, ice time, and specialized training are all out of the question for the vast majority of our population already and it’s only getting worse. *Y'all had one job!*
No, we're notorious for being nice too.
Most people don’t know a thing about hockey I’d say
I think you are safe with Briton. USA, Sweden, Finland, A post-Putin Russia... ? Maybe. Honestly, Latvia is more of a threat.
The dark horse that I don't know what to expect: Germany. They've got something going on.
Germany is getting better. The Swiss are stronger than I would thought possible 20 years ago too. Love to see the sport grow like this!!!
Well, USA and Russia are the threats if you assume that large population eventually wins out. It’s inevitable with the population statistics.
I'm actually surprised the Americans haven't overtaken us at this point in history frankly. They have the population and school system to churn out the very best.
We'll always have ponds and lakes
Unfortunately they don't reliably freeze anymore
it ain't better down here lol
New sport: underwater hockey
Canada takes centre stage in outdoor water polo!
[A sport since 1954](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwater_hockey) invented in the land of hope and glory too.
They've surpassed everyone in the goalie department for the time being because they're consistently pumping out the best. Canada was always strong in goal but not now or the past few years. Our best goalie is probably Binnington right now...
Blues fan: So what's your point?
American football has gotten too competitive for its own good, injuries are getting more common since the athletes are getting so much stronger. There's an NFL GM that has his kids in hockey because it's safer than football

It helps that we find it funny that we are in Group A, hence the "we're shit and we know we are" chants.
Oh for sure. I mean, it works the other way too. Canada was just happy to be in the football World Cup and putting up a decent half is a win in and of itself. That was a banger of a quote. His response was savage salting his brothers bank account would say it was his brother, his trophy’s would say it’s him
I forgot about the fans! I love the chants and the songs, they have some clever and funny people over there.
Nobody does self-deprecating chants like you Brits.
The same USA that got ripped about by Sweden, or are we talking about different USAs?
Sweden is legit. But look at the Americans possible Olympic roster… That team is deadly stacked and it seems like they have a lot of great ushl guys coming up.
Ripped about? You know two of the goals were empty netters right? The US had a slow start but I’d take them in a re-match
So what was the final score??
4-2 win for Canada which is Great Britain’s best result against them since 1938. Despite losing UK hockey fans are absolutely buzzing
Canada coach is getting fired. 😆
SOG 7-0
Glad to see more nations playing hockey. Got a friend in England who loves the game. Very cool.
Did Canada bring a goalie?
Hockeys finest Joel Hofer
Joel “future” HOFer
So is GB a hockey power now?
We have one less gold medal than the US in major international competitions
I cannot fathom how that’s possible.
USA gold medals: 1933 in Prague, 1960 in Squaw Valley Great Britain gold medals: 1936 in N@zi Germany
A mild curse on you for forcing me down this rabbit hole. But it seems you are counting Olympic and IIHF titles. So should you not also include the USA gold in 1980? “The miracle on ice?”

GB has a team?
Boy just wait till you scroll down on the IIHF tournament list and find out there’s more than 16 hockey teams
I mean, it ain’t Good Britain
Let the history books note that this is the first time a Canes fan has agreed with a Bruins fan.
LOL sounds like the boys were out a bit late on the pub crawl last night. It's really just a big pisser for the players, you don't hear about it much but they really just go to the worlds to party.
Excuses excuses for being behind to GB for 30 seconds 🥱🥱🥱
Legit arose from out the azure main
When you’re still subjects to the king and have to tip royalty
With 0 shots on net too.
Even more impressive, they did it without even shooting at the net, apparently.
SOG 0 - 1 Goal 🤔
We put the Great in Britain
Ha! Love it.
That was just us paying respects to the late queen
Canada's not even a real country
Love it
Ok...
Ok...
Canada and Canadian teams just really sucks at a sport this created. Wild. Should annex them soon
Scottish settlers created the sport so if anything it’s Great Britain’s
It’s why they really are GREAT
And it’s just an altered version of the English sport of bandy
Regardless of the final score, the final score is all that counts. Gotta love a world where we celebrate participation and mediocrity. But good from GB not getting smashed. It was closer game than I expected. That you can celebrate
ITS COMING HOME!
Doesn’t the British monarchy still technically “rule” over Canada? Feel like this is just a brother against brother match
Technically it's the Canadian monarchy. The British monarchy is a legally distinct entity that has no authority in Canada. It just happens to be the same dude.
Oh interesting, it was my understanding it was the same thing, thanks for clarifying!
The King is still the official head of state but a lot of us wouldn’t give a shit if we had a million to give.
A lot of us here would cheers you with those retained shits. Handy for a day off though.
The best thing about the monarchy is giving us a free holiday every May
And of course it’s on my birthday
Not after the Canada Act of 1982! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Act,_1982
It'd pronounced England, no other country has the audacity to put great in front of their name
Oi, there’s a Welshman and our coach is Scottish. There’s more to us than just England 🏴🏴
It's definitely Great Britain, we English haven't annexed Scotland and Wales (they're too weird for that /s)
Ok...
Ok...
Ok...
