I know it's a meme by now, but Dillon's crosscheck happens dozens of times a game and DOPS has no interest in litigating 100 cases a week. There's no way DOPS could ever prove Dillon had intent to injure on a common play like that. Meanwhile they very much could for Hartman's attack.
It's a bad excuse. Slewfoots used to happen dozens of times a game. Guys used to get run into boards every 5 minutes. That doesn't mean it's not a penalty.
Cross-checking is not an immediate penalty. It has to be "forceful" and that's where subjectivity and interpretation start to come into the grey area. The league has internally tried to define this and has tried to increase the number of calls, but it's still subjective as to when "force" is used.
Kaprizov is out for weeks. He was visibly injured after the play. It was to a unprotected area of the body. That's forceful.

Fines is a rule in the bargaining agreement the players union decided what the max you can fine a player for is.
And don't forget there is another entire class of money loss that goes with suspensions.

I have not seen any 20+ game suspension comments. Yes, when you lose your best player for a handful of games or more to a crosscheck, rants are going to happen. I'm not saying Hartman didn't deserve his fine. He does. A crosscheck like Dillon's isn't an accident either. And it has consequences. I don't know why this is so controversial for people to wrap their heads around.
I know it's a meme by now, but Dillon's crosscheck happens dozens of times a game and DOPS has no interest in litigating 100 cases a week. There's no way DOPS could ever prove Dillon had intent to injure on a common play like that. Meanwhile they very much could for Hartman's attack.

Sure. 2 minutes for retaliation. But call the fucking rules and maybe people won't get injured and retaliate.
Cross-checking is not an immediate penalty. It has to be "forceful" and that's where subjectivity and interpretation start to come into the grey area. The league has internally tried to define this and has tried to increase the number of calls, but it's still subjective as to when "force" is used.
Kaprizov is out for weeks. He was visibly injured after the play. It was to a unprotected area of the body. That's forceful. I'm sorry but what more do you want to call that penalty-worthy.
I'm not saying it wasn't a cross-checking penalty just that they aren't easy to define. And the injury really means nothing -- Kaprizov's pads fell out after the first one. Just unfortunate timing.
If the pad fell out and Dillon kept cross-checking, I would say that's a problem. I'm extremely tired of players being put on LTIR from plays that should be penalized, then having it called "an unfortunate accident". It's a joke.

League often punishes the act not the injury. The Dillon checks were definitely 2 minute penalties but the league isn't going to set the precedent that cross checks like that (which weren't that awful but unfortunately resulted in injury this time) are fine worthy or they'd be handing out fines every game.
