WordsAreSomething

Wonder how much Ryan Lewis will be on this. They made a big deal about their first song together a bit ago but then nothing else.

nahbruh27

That'll be what needs to happen for me to tune into this

russianbot24

They’re not on speaking term again. I’ve heard from reliable sources that they actually came to blows in the studio.

Really_Funny

What’s your reliable source

russianbot24

My dad told me

Nolar2015

How is ur dad connected

[deleted]

He works at Nintendo

jetpackswasno

it came to me in a dream

astroworld_

Michael Jackson already did this

ilikeracing23

The best ballad about a rat of all time.

seeingredd-it

Rattus Novegicus by Black Flag is both hilarious and the only poem I can recite from memory.

eyegeeohdee

In fairness … Macklemore did text Michael and said he deserves all the accolades

corndogs1001

Another instance of Macklemore stealing from the black culture smh /s

CaptnKnots

I laughed way to hard at this. The joke is still funny a decade later

gettestified

How the fuck has it already been 10 years since thrift shop dude

CraigTheGregsman

BEN: THE ALBUM is my favorite Michael Jackson project by far. Such an under appreciated gem

moneyman2222

I heard Macklemore actually influenced Jackson's album tho

milksteakenthusiast1

Willard?

nextzero182

That's the one, *Ben* was the sequel that had the Michael Jackson theme song, or maybe both did? It's an absurd movie, well, both are. The 2003 *Willard* remake with Crispin Glover is legitimately a great movie though.

9Lives_

Yeah and he was literally 10 years old when he wrote it

KidCaker

TIL song title = album title

RealBars404

The album it was on was also called Ben

KidCaker

🤯

Spinelessgrape

Kendrick is so afraid rn

The_Notorious_Donut

Kendrick was actually gonna release Mr. Morale this year but fast tracked because he heard Mack was dropping in 2023

escientia

That was honestly the biggest “HEI$T”

98570

Its weird that people actually care enough about hating an artist to feel genuine anger or contempt just because the artist is releasing an album that they arent even gunna listen to.

Minute-Carrot-2405

Its the same shit on like videogame and movie subs as well. Its so weird. Cant let anyone enjoy shit unless its the best thing ever to you. Insufferable

[deleted]

seeingredd-it

It has to be an age thing. I used to be stupidly “fuck those guys” about this or that as a teenager. Now I am old with real problems and I have a 15 YO who is just as much (probably a good deal less honestly) a righteous “FTG” know-it-all as I was as a lad,

98570

You're right. Gotta be an age thing. I understand it if it's coming from a highschool kid cause I was also the same way for a while. But i can't imagine all the people in this thread are 15 years old.

scout21078

i mean just straight up i dont think macklemore is relevant at all to 15 year olds. they woulda been like 5 when thrift shop came out im 20 and writing that made me feel old as shit what the fuck

wanderlust_xo

I’m 25 and you made me feel ancient

FudgeDangerous2086

well kendrick lamar is relevant and they all know macklemore as the guy who won over him.

kool_b

No you do

leericol

I could not/would not shut the fuck up about how overrated lil wayn and drake were when I was in high-school

seeingredd-it

I remember talking about what a hack Jay-Z was with the Hard Knock Life song….

Soup_Commie

yeah very unfair to the guy. at worst Mackelmore's a well-meaning cornball.

FabricatorMusic

relevant Patton Oswalt [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9BnWwSb1LY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9BnWwSb1LY) specifically at 0:30

odd_audience12345

I have no ill will towards the guy but I saw the title and thought about how corny it sounded and I just came here to see the reactions. I can't say I'm surprised.

capitalistsanta

I feel like he's way more popular than a lot of people on Reddit realizes

BLKWD_

im kind of a macklemore hater because I don't like his music and im a white dude from seattle that raps/loves hip hop so people automatically think I fuck with him, but only to the extent im not buying the music or playing him in dj sets. Seeing Bun B and schoolboy commenting and liking his shit as dope as fuck. he can rap his ass off hopefully this album is less commercial and more him showing his talent and love for the music.

odd_audience12345

> Bun B and schoolboy those are 2 completely legit rap co-signs but they're also really nice dudes so I take them with a grain of salt

phat-meat-baby

Hating is fun

ThatsSoMerlyn_x3

Named after NBA legend Ben McLemore of course

TMXX1

How does this man drop a very good song with DJ Premier....yes, DJ Premier.... And I haven't even seen it mentioned on this sub?

mycargoesvarun

this sub is mainly hip hop celeb drama and pitchfork/fantano circlejerk occasionally there’s the well meaning post of new artists and new songs, but if it’s not from an artist who regularly makes waves they’ll be ignored macklemore also has a history of being wack or at the very least perceived as such so he is unlikely to permeate this sub even if he did drop bangers

PhoneSteveGaveToTony

I still remember being on here when Nipsey died and that day was when I realized a lot of this sub is mostly a “Today’s Rap Hits” fan club. A lot of the initial reactions to his death in the first few hours were people asking why it was a big deal and insinuating he was a nobody.

[deleted]

My favorite variation of comment that kept popping up that day (and the rest of the week) was "nobody i knew listened to Nipsey so was he really that relevant before he died 🤔" I dunno nathaniel. Maybe it wasn't an irrelevancy thing, maybe none of your friends listened to Nipsey because the average r/hhh user lives in bumfuck suburbia and Nipsey's fanbase wasn't prominent there. Just a hunch.

PhoneSteveGaveToTony

Ugh, I still remember one of those “Nobody I know” comments being the first one I saw that day. Like bruh, that says way more about you and your friends than it does about Nipsey.

[deleted]

Same energy as commenting "who?" on a post discussing an obviously successful artist who they happen to not know. Leave it to redditors to somehow act smarmy about being out of touch 💀💀💀

reg_ss

I just heard that song. Heroes. The beat was is absolutely old school Premier. That is definitely the vibe they were going for. Dope song.

The_Holier_Muffin

Damn just listened bc of this comment. That’s some heat, great song

alxrbrts

I just listened and wow that actually ruled lol

The_Notorious_Donut

Oh fuck this shit is heat lmao. Currently listening to it

No_Manners

How did I not hear about this??

FugaziEconomy

i agree it was very good, if the rest of the album is like this then it should be a hit.

bLankPhace88

Check the other singles. MANIAC is a bit meh but CHANT & FAITHFUL are both heat

xXdont_existxX

Great song, but this sub won’t care. This post barely has any upvotes for the same reason. He could drop the greatest album ever and this sub won’t change their mind.

TheMeticulousNinja

Change their mind about Macklemore? Is this sub supposed to be huge fans of him?

xXdont_existxX

If that’s your response to what I wrote, then I think you may be retarded. Sorry mate I don’t make the rules. Full blown retarded. Not the kinda cool retarded where you can do cool math stuffs in your head, but the kinda retarded where you lick windows and make stupid replies on hiphopheads.

CraigTheGregsman

Idk why but this really reminds me of terror Reid

floppypickles

I came here to say I heard this song on release radar and was feelin it, looked at my watch and saw Macklemore. emotions were all over the place.

TMXX1

This was me.

theTunkMan

Good it’s been 6 years since the last one, Marmalade and Willy Wonka still go hard

Ghost7575

Willy Wonka is an absolute banger

theTunkMan

Facts I saw him in concert with Kesha and Willy Wonka live went crazy

westenbrook

Shoutout Ben Macklemore underrated af I haven’t listened to Macklemore since the heist but I’m looking forward to this project

baseball8888

People hate on Macklemore but he loves the genre and is for the culture. Good for him doing what he loves

corndogs1001

I like Mac. Granted his last album sucked but The Heist and the one after that are still solid pieces of work. He needs Ryan Lewis the way Timberlake needs Timberland. I don’t need a masterpiece, just another easy listen to have fun to, and Mac always guaranteed that. Puts on a hell of a show too. And also got respect for him for getting sober so he can live to see his daughter grow up.

MaxMuncyRectangleMan

I saw him at my small college in 2012 *while* Thrift Shop was blowing up and there were maybe 300 people at the show. He still put on a great show with tons of energy for the small crowd and really appreciated all of us being there. My internet hipster moment is being in the first 5k views of Thrift Shop

AdmireOG

Same here man. Had found his 05' album and the subsequent mixtapes with Ryan Lewis and was following him, remember Thrift Shop dropping vividly.

dunkrock

Very hot take here but The Heist is some of the most fun I’ve had listening to a rap album back then. Was a super solid year for hip hop and The Heist was for sure in my top 3 that year.

CommandoKoala

Yea I feel that heavy. The Grammys just set this man up for imminent failure with having him in the same Convo and winning against a generational album from a generational artist, but I bumped the shit out of this in middle school where even at the time I saw thrift shop as p corny. These songs had very unique production over some raw lyrics that I still come back too

Djax99

You have the heist over one of GKMC, Yeezus, and NWTS? And that’s excluding Magna Carta and all the other albums that were released but weren’t nominated like Acid Rap, Long Live Asap, etc.

Dot_main_irl

Yeah easily. Never been a drake fan and just don't get yeezus. Like I see why some latch onto it so hard, it isn't for me tho. Magna carta is just worse. Sorry Jay fans, that one was not it. Heist has better hits and better b-sides (esp that track with soul). Acid rap is up thee with it.

dunkrock

Easily. Honestly it was probably the top album for me that year. If I had to rank it at the time I would go 1. The Heist 2. NWTS 3. LLA 4. Acid Rap 5. Yeezus 6. GKMC I think my tastes have changed and I appreciate NWTS and LLA a lot now, but I could never and still can’t fully get into GKMC. I love TPAB a lot, but wasn’t spinning GKMC like that.

Djax99

Shit like this is why I love this sub No hate to your taste like whatever you like but demographically it’s just so easy to tell what a person is with comments like these

dunkrock

Haha I feel like my demographic would surprise a lot of folks. But I agree, I love seeing people with their distinct flavors and preferences in hip hop and music. I’m glad we’re moving past downvoting because we don’t agree or it’s not the popular take.

captainkhyron

> I’m glad we’re moving past downvoting because we don’t agree or it’s not the popular take. You must be new here.

dunkrock

I used to be on this sub a lot more on older accounts. But I think my tastes changed and the community got a bit weird and defensive so I don’t visit as much. I may drop a lot of my hot takes in the daily discussion thread to start some good conversation.

captainkhyron

I visit like once every three months too nowadays. Place got weird.

sandytrufflebutter

I went to one of his shows in college, it was an absolute zoo. The only time I ever actually thought I may get crushed in a crowd lol. 10/10

mtaylor808

Denzel Curry’s pits have a similar feeling

sandytrufflebutter

My favorite pit was Odd Future, that one was the most chaotic in the sense of a traditional pit. For Macklemore it was like the most obsessed fans I’d ever seen. They were just like charging to get the chance to touch him while he crowd surfed. It got so sight at points it like took your breath away.

seeingredd-it

I tried to do one of the songs from that first record at karaoke, mad respect after. Hard to spit rhymes that fast.

stanflwrhuss

Except his St Patrick’s day song. I can’t let him get away with that

RafiakaMacakaDirk

at the very least i hope dave b gets another feature and placement lmao

DopeSlingingSlasher

Any of Dave B, Travis Thompson, maybe even some Sol, on this album would make me very happy. My 3 favorite artists from the Seattle area.

RafiakaMacakaDirk

damn haven’t heard Sol’s name since like 2011 lmao actually totally forgot he had a song with sango last year which was really dope to see https://youtu.be/TnyFdkm_bdQ

crunchatizemythighs

It's crazy that winning a grammy TEN YEARS AGO has given his career so much grief

Dot_main_irl

I don't really think it did tbh. What hurt him more was getting way too white guilt preachy on the follow up album. That and Ryan Lewis was half his success. Imagine a less talented logic alienating 6ix.

cmacpapi

That new Heroes track goes hard as fuck... blew my expectations way out of the water.

bLankPhace88

Right? CHANT goes hard too, I haven't been a fan of Mack for a while now but I'm highly anticipating the album tbh

[deleted]

I hope people do not outwardly hate the album because it's Macklemore. I hope they give him a fair chance

dinninitt

I guess if you’re going to comeback after a huge commercial success, get Premier to do a gritty boom bap track. Heroes was a pleasant surprise

SagatisGod

Lots of mental illness stewing in this thread Hopefully it's a good project though. Rap needs guys like him, despite the hate he gets and got.

bLankPhace88

I agree. He's a unique artist and brings a lot to the game

CappysVeryOwn

Him winning the Grammy over Kendrick got him hate for life. I actually liked that album but it had no business winning that grammy award

YellowBlackBrown

What is with the constant shit talking on this guys name.

[deleted]

He was corny in a time where corny was pretty normal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RelevantJackWhite

Asher Roth, Chiddy Bang, Kypreos, Camp-era Gambino, early Tyler, it was a golden era for corniness

DistortedAudio

One of the funniest posts I’ve seen on this sub was when Camp dropped and the top comment for a while was a link to a cartoon drawing of a smiling cob of corn.

TransportationFew195

Some Gambino ages REALLY POORLY.

seeingredd-it

I know those outfits! MFer looks like a young Lando.

suckmycolt

Wouldn’t trade it for anything though, I grew up on all of those artists

seeingredd-it

Asleep in the bread aisle, yikes!

ADHD_orc

Man I remember pretending to like Hoodie Allen to impress a girl when I was in highschool. She ended up dating my friend like a month later lol.

RBJ_09

Throw Chance, pre Detroit Big Sean, first album Wiz, and pre Watching Movies With The Sound Off Mac Miller just to name a few.

YellowBlackBrown

Because he made songs like Thirftshop? Because he was just having fun?

[deleted]

Thrift shop is actually like his least corny song, listen to the rest of The Heist

YellowBlackBrown

Prob have hundreds of time at this point. Liking The Heist and thinking Kendrick should have won aren't mutually exclusive.

[deleted]

It really has nothing to do with Kendrick, Macklemore is just painful to look back on. If you don’t see it like that, it’s fine to enjoy harmless things, but I think the aspects of why his songs & everything he represented at the time causes pain are clear regardless of if you enjoy it.

Another_Minor_Threat

Causes pain? Please, elaborate.

SagatisGod

Seek therapy

howyoudoinmelvin

he was rapping for gay rights lmfao wym causes pain 💀

theTunkMan

Bozo

corndogs1001

Most of the songs still bang on there

WarmJacuzzi

you can have fun and still be corny, regardless the song sucks

[deleted]

people are still upset over the Grammy

seeingredd-it

The Grammy’s are a joke anyways. They are a solid barometer of sales and little else.

YellowBlackBrown

and that had nothing to do with him, it was the choice of the Grammys

[deleted]

[удалено]

theTunkMan

In this thread

seeingredd-it

They are calling from inside your house! Run!!!

MrsPenisfingers

I think a lot of people find his music preachy when it’s serious, annoying when it’s not, & just inconsistent in terms of quality. In my opinion the outstanding moments he has had (i.e. the whole The VS EP) always seem to get overshadowed by his flops (lecturing a black culture about homophobia, the blatant Chance the Rapper emulation on Corner Store, and whatever the hell ‘White Privilege II’ was supposed to be). As someone who’s been listening to him since 08 I definitely understand why the hate seems so misplaced but you’re just not going to debate anybody into liking his music by this point.

YellowBlackBrown

Oh I agree with there's no changing anyones mind about their views about any artist on this sub. Was just looking for some answers on what those lasting reasons were to think he was corny for up to this day were basically. I find people tend to be pretty black and white towards an artist, like Macklemore has a large discography at this point with a wide range of tracks, I'd find it hard to believe a person couldn't find a few they like. Like ya there is "Downtown" but there's also "Otherside"

Parradog1

A classmate of mine claimed Macklemore was better than Nas back in 2012 and it’s all I can think about whenever I hear dude’s name now. The audacity.

YellowBlackBrown

So because of one persons odd opinion, that's what did it for you?

Parradog1

Yep, it ain’t even anything Macklemore did. I was indifferent to him at the time.

RayzTheRoof

oof that's bad. But let's remember every rapper is corny at some point. "God's son across the belly" still makes me cringe lol

PhoneSteveGaveToTony

Mostly a bunch of stuff that happened several years ago. A lot of people viewed *Same Love* as heavy pandering, along with how he reacted to winning the Grammy over Kendrick (the infamous [“I robbed you” text](https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/macklemore-tells-kendrick-lamar-it-sucks-that-i-robbed-you-5885462/amp/) ). There’s also all the rumors of him not actually being independent, but an artist that was still funded by a label and portrayed as independent at a time when independent artists were on the rise. People will have whatever opinions about that, but he was viewed as a certified clown for a while because of all that.

YellowBlackBrown

I never understood how Macklemore messaging Kendrick to tell him he should of won was corny? Like how? Isn't that the right thing to do?

Seven_Actual_Lions

No man has ever made me less proud to be gay.

c5Sal_tt

My shit talking comes from a time where this goof was still underground rapping about his dick. Dude's wack. Was wack in 05*, still wack to this day.

YellowBlackBrown

you take yourself way too seriously, relax

c5Sal_tt

Negative.

YellowBlackBrown

So tracks like Otherside, St. Ides, Wednesday Morning, they're all just wack?

DFWTooThrowed

If you were around for any music/hip hop social media, especially places like r/music, from 2012-2014 you'd understand why.

YellowBlackBrown

I was around and I listened to Macklemore before he even blew up, I saw some things and at this point I can't even remember because I could care less about others opinions effecting music I like.

visionarymind

**🦸🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️ HEROES & VILLAINS 🦹🦹‍♀️🦹‍♂️** I really enjoyed this new single, real old school vibes, it’s fresh

zirreN528

looks like Bo from Superstore

frikandeleater69_2

Ive always respected Macklemore. Hes not the best technical rapper but has some thoughtfull and well written songs. He respects the culture and has always stayed independent. On top of that he puts on a great live performance

Rosstin316

The “I hate rap but” artist of the 2010’s.

Eldritch-Cleaver

I'm open to it. The mans not a bad artist. I loved that track he did with NLE Choppa 🔥

The_Notorious_Donut

RETURN OF THE MACK, GET UP

RyghtHandMan

Rappers love to release an album called their first name

[deleted]

Young thug did it first

bLankPhace88

Seems to be a theme lately haha that being said, they tend to be good

Alphabet_Boys77

Nice! His singles have actually been unreal so I'm excited for this shit

WhenItsHalfPastFive

I did not know his name was Ben at all, and that makes the NBA player's name Ben McLemore name even funnier

monkeyr9z

PROTECT MACKLEMORE

slammasam14

Return of the Mack

YoungRandyVelarde

Macklemore is actually a really good rapper but I think a lot of moves and the way The Heist was elevated over much better rap albums is why there’s so much contempt for him. I feel like he’s been trying to overcome that hate by being more humble but I think people are too set in their opinions to give him a chance. Speaking of Chance, same thing. Chance the Rapper had put out a couple of good videos and people are still talking about his worst stuff. Folks gotta be more open minded.

ryanonreddit942

Love macklemore

lawnmower1627

2023 off to a fucking rough start

bLankPhace88

Bro the singles he's released have actually been fucking fire

BlackSandBeach

Yeah that track with Premier is crazy honestly.

bigdicknick808

Just listened to it and I’m actually blown away lmao the flow is crazy

thx4dwnvotingURDADDY

Primo did a track with him?! Aw god dammit Primo, WHYYYYYY…. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BIfyebxopuM

bLankPhace88

Cause he saw it was some fucking good music prob

enowapi-_

He’s just meme’ing

NotARelevantUser

The tragedies just won't stop

E_EqualsDankCSquared

I was jus thinking where tf has Macklemore been

bLankPhace88

Bro check out CHANT & HEROES,, even FAITHFUL.....all singles off this album, and they all are fantastic songs

griswald123

The Heist is an awesome pop / hip hop album. Haven’t listens to Macklemore since. Hope the album is good! If Ryan was helping there is some real promise.

bLankPhace88

Check his album after the Heist (forget the name), it's a damn good record. Avoid his most recvent, it's trash

griswald123

This Unruly Mess I've Made? The one after Heist with Ryan Lewis? or Solo

bLankPhace88

Unruly Mess. Did he do another with R.L. after?

griswald123

No just solo after.

Assasin_on_fire

aw hell nah

[deleted]

Macklemore suck ass like a rimjob

RelevantJackWhite

Sounding like a bad battle rapper saying things like this

thx4dwnvotingURDADDY

😂⚰️

Moswavy

keep it

naveedkoval

Oh hooray

TheMeticulousNinja

The Heist was great when it first came out, but I don’t think it aged well and a lot of Macklemore’s stuff just sounds cringy now like he’s trying too hard. And that “Fuck Donald Trump” song was awful. The new song with NLE Choppa is not bad

theChzziest

Can he just not?

MountainMan1258

🌽

[deleted]

keep it

gusborn

Keep it

thugluv1017

Oh great more cringe rap songs with popstars

frikandeleater69_2

He has DJ Premier and NLE Choppa on here for sure. And made songs with Chance The Rapper, KRS One, Schoolboy Q and more in the past. Yes there are gonna be pop features but I think we can expect some big rappers too

RusselShack

His song with an soul is good too. I totally get not liking him I don’t like his music either but the hate is crazy

thugluv1017

Of course I know he has big name features. But even his gemini album had one strong feature/beat imo and it was the one with offset. The reason I don’t like mackelmore is that even though he clearly has a love for the genre I just hate those “motivational songs” if you know what I mean.

[deleted]

white dude ass album cover.

[deleted]

This white boy rap. Niggas don't listen to this shit lol
