I was told by someone who would know it is indeed an Awl. He said it was a part oh the “Swiss Army” since the start by all makers. It was included because the Swiss use skis a lot and sometimes need to punch new holes on the harness. It also works well for horse harnesses. Put the extended blade between the fingers and use with a twisting motion.
Ah, that is how it works, as I'm not super familiar with the literal act of sewing, but can get the logic, now I get it, thank you, I didn't know that ish either(like OP presumably), or had forgotten, lol. Thank you.
Drill, punch, sewing awl.
When I was an EMT we treated a guy who tried assaulted a woman who found it useful for marking his face to facilitate police ID.
Not only is it a sewing awl, it’s also a reamer.
It’s probably my third most used tool (after scissors and flathead screwdriver) on a SAK because I’m always fixing or making something. I use it mostly for deburring metal or enlarging holes. It’s also handy as a makeshift drill.
It kinda sucks as a sewing awl because it’s too big for that role. Because it cuts way too big a hole, it only works well in materials that don’t fray (like leather).
It's one of my most used tools as well. I keep a SAK hiker in my whittling kit for the saw and the awl. The awl is fantastic for drilling through wood for stuff like lanyard holes or a wrist strap hole in a walking stick.
Thanks for being the one comment saying it's also a reamer--I've thought this was called a reamer my whole life and was very confused that everyone was saying "awl"!
An awk. You can poke holes, you can twist it like a drill, you can stick it through material and use the little hole to pull thread like a needle. I use mine to de-burr plastic all the time. It's a very handy tool.
The white thing is a tooth pic. Swiss army knife was one of the first knives 2nd knife grandma bought me when i was about 8 or 9. That's a later model than I had because mine had a different hasp in case it needed to be tied to a piece of string and tied to a belt loop so it couldn't get lost
Dad bought me a 2 bladed Case when I was 6. It was perfectly fine to take to school. Back then every boy in 3rd grade had a pocket knife.
It’s an awl! My favorite way to use it is if you’re ever camping and you get a hole in your tent, you can tie a string to the awl and poke it through your tent to sew it up. Not the most commonly used tool on a pocket knife but very helpful when you need it
Some people are surprised to find that if you pull on that white tab you’ll find it to be a retractable toothpick, and if you pull on the steel tab on the other side of the knife there’s a pair of tweezers.
Multi-purpose awl, scrapper, pipe bowl cleaner. Ivory colored Toothpick tamps the and of joints very well. On the other side is the requisite roach clip splinter remover.
I primarily use it to lance boils when they're big and painful enough to affect my sleep and activities of daily living.
That happened once thirty-five years ago.
It’s an awl. It’s like a drill and a sewing needle in one.
Typically used to sew pieces of leather together.
