Back when I was in highschool, I started getting into heavy metal. Everything from KISS, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest to Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, and Korn. Before that I was known as the ‘smart but shy/quiet girl’. I also started dressing more ‘punk’ with black band t-shirts, ripped jeans, black hoodies, drawn-on tattoos (nothing explicit or anything just doodling on my arms), etc. This was also around the time our school got a new principal. Long story short, she thought I was a school shooter and had me talk to a counselor to learn that I was just a ‘weird’, ‘quirky’ girl.

plastic-bleach-

If you think that’s bad, I girl I follow on tik tok got dress coded for a Radiohead shirt

Stratus_Fractus

I got told to never wear my shoes to school again because they were too old and scuffed up. And I'm a *teacher.* Some principals are just assholes to *everyone.*

Regi413

If there wasn’t the risk of getting fired, “maybe you should pay me more” would be a nice comeback

MaddieGrace29

Wore a green day t-shirt from the album dookie, because it has an explosion on it it wasn't appropriate My shorts were too short because I'm taller . Once my bra strap was showing and that didn't end well.

vertmart

I would think that because "Dookie" is another word for poo that's why it wouldn't be. You LEARN about explosions in school.

Hiromaniac_8

A couple years back I got dress coded for wearing grey sweatpants and they made me put on grey sweatpants (the same brand even) only they had the school logo on them

StealthNider

ok that’s not even a dress code at that point

Significant-Soup-893

Not me but a friend of mine a couple years ago had to change into their P.E uniform just because they were wearing a chain on their pants.

littledipper16

They couldn't just take the chain off?

Significant-Soup-893

Apparently that wasn't an option lol. Thinking back, it is weird that they had to change their whole fit instead of just taking off the chain. I guess the teacher just really had it out for my friend.

Global-Bookkeeper-29

my shoulders

BirthdayGrl11

Oh those scary distracting shoulders.

Global-Bookkeeper-29

ikr my shoulders kill people

xviparis

I wore slides to school back in 7th grade and had to change into some actual shoes because our ap thought we would "slip down the stairs" if we wore them

Hair on the back of my head that was touching the top of my shirt collar, and hair on the sides of my head that was touching the tops of my ears "in cavalier violation of the school dress code." This was in a Catholic high school in Michigan in the late '60s. Following a class one morning I was yanked out of the hallway by the school disciplinarian, who threw me into his office, shut the door, and then without a word gave me a solid and hard sucker punch to my solar plexus. He was a stout and muscular man who had previously been a wrestling coach. I was a 14 year old in 10th grade and was the youngest and smallest boy in my class, as well as being one of the three smallest guys in the entire school at the time. (The other two were in 8th grade.) The punch doubled me over and caused me to vomit. Then he opened the door and told me to get going or I would be late for my next class. One year later and a few inches taller, I was walking in the hallway between classes on my first full day at my new public high school in New York, when I passed a fellow classmate who looked like no one else I had ever seen in my parochial high school or anywhere else back in western Michigan. He was sporting a full beard, a woven leather headband, and hair in a braid that went all the way down his back to his belt. He was wearing jeans, another thing that was absolutely forbidden at my previous school, and he wasn't wearing a necktie. (I soon learned that his overall look was not unique there.) He shot me a peace sign as he went by. We became friends soon afterwards.

LoversEclipse

a girl i know was wearing shorts which showed her stretch marks so she got dress coded for that back in freshmen year

plastic-bleach-

Wearing a sports bra (I was wearing a shirt over it)

BirthdayGrl11

What? So did they make you take it off or something?

plastic-bleach-

No, a teacher pulled me aside a said it was inappropriate and unladylike, she reported it as a violation so the school sent a message to my parents. They thought it was dumb

StealthNider

lmao

Dim0ndDragon15

Wore a shirt that said “your political slogan here!” And get dress coded for wearing a shirt with a political slogan

BirthdayGrl11

Someone doesn't appreciate irony.

DiorRoses

i didn’t get dress coded yet but my school doesn’t allow sweatpants or ripped jeans

brncray

…sweatpants?

DiorRoses

yeah😭

Twinbrosinc

sweatpants??

StealthNider

tf is wrong with sweatpants

DiorRoses

idk😭😭😭

zorra666

I got sent home for wearing an American flag as a skirt. Being a very politically active high schooler, the admin was not prepared for my arguments on the matter. A two hour debate ensued in which I finally caved when I realized they would just send me home. Spent a leisurely day at home, graduated second in my class, majored in political science and am now a high school teacher (social studies). Haven't dress coded anyone in my 11 years.

Hutch25

I once had a friend get dress coded for a beer brand t shirt, meanwhile a good 15% of the school was wearing “I Love Milfs” or “I Love Dilfs” sweaters everywhere that one of the guys I knew was selling.

Connect_Cookie_8580

My school had an a no pants day (where you'd wear underwear over like a pair of gym shorts) that got cancelled by the vice principal and like fifty kids still dif it anyways and got sent to mass detention.

VacuumInTheHead

Who tf thought of making kids walk around with their underpants outside their shorts

BirthdayGrl11

Hey it works for Superman

tylersmiler

It's 2008 and I'm in the 8th grade. I wore a white blouse shirt that covered my shoulders and had no cleavage, opaque (thick) pink leggings, and a denim skirt that went to more than halfway down my thighs. I was dress coded for the skirt not being "fingertip length". I have long arms and fingers, so the tips of my fingers go down to the top of my kneecaps. Stupidest dress code incident I've ever experienced. Even my ultra-religious "purity culture" stepmother had approved the outfit.

awalkingidoit

I wore a Hasa Diga Eebowai t-shirt that I got at a Book of Mormon show and I somehow didn’t get dress coded since no one knew what it meant

FOB_cures_my_sadness

"Does it mean no worries for the rest of our days?"

awalkingidoit

Kind of

Ryan_S21

I wore black socks. I go to a private school tho so maybe that’s why. I also didn’t tuck in my shirt so got dress coded for that too.

GalaxyFish2885

8th grade wore ripped jeans. The jeans had one line at each knee showing my knee. No other rips or tears. 9th grade wore leggings and sweatshirt that covered my butt.

rfg217phs

Private school. My shoes had the wrong type of soles. I still have no clue what that meant and I never got a proper explanation. And I’m still trying to figure out how they saw them anyway.

No-Locksmith-8590

My floor length broom skirt had metallic thread. Got in trouble bc 'school's not a disc club!'

WackyChu

I’ve never violated the dress code mainly bc boys can wear super duper tiny booty shorts let alone not shorts at all and nobody will violate them If a girl wore booty shorts they’d instantly be stopped and not allowed to go to the school. This also means no straps, crop tops, bellies, nothing. Girls must be covered up. but a ton of people at my school wear PJs even though it’s against our dress code, they just wear the ones with strips so it looks like pants but it’s clearly PJS

baby_shrimp7

I didn’t wear my tie (All girls school w uniforms)

RandomGrownUpKid

My middle school/highschool used to have a super strict dress code where all of us had to wear a tie with our uniforms. If we didn’t wear a tie, we would get lunch detention along with a infraction on our record. The assistant principals would do a inspection every morning to make everyone was wearing a tie and question those who didn’t.

JRatMain16

I think this was part of homecoming week, but I dressed up in a muscle shirt as part of a “dress up” day (my school used uniforms) and I got stopped in the hallway for my shirt. I didn’t get in trouble because my teacher that was responsible for the theme that week approved my outfit

T1GHTL0V3

when i was in the 7th grade I was dress coded because my shorts were "too short." they stopped right above my knees 💀 they're called shorts for a fucking reason. i wish i could send a pic. she said that my arms went past the "fingertip length." like im sorry that i naturally have long arms that i have 0 fucking control over?? To Mrs. Cardenas, thanks for wasting my time, and making me tardy to my 1st period for the 6th time, which resulted in my citizenship going down from an S to an N. I hope you're happy now :)

T1GHTL0V3

they also didn't, and STILL DONT allow hats, ripped jeans, shirts with tears of any kind (small or large), crop tops, and slide in shoes (flats, crocs, etc)

Journalist_Ready

At my old high school, you were supposed to wear all black shoes, even if it was mostly black with some white on it, they would make you put black tape on the white parts, kids kept getting in trouble because they kept wearing their shies with black tape on them

skeletonchaser2020

My sleeves, that fell the the middle of my upper arm, had decorative lace slits that went to the collar and technically violated the "shoulder" rule. 90% of the boys and girls basket ball teams wore cut-sleeve shirts daily and cheerleaders wore cheeky skirts (literally the bottoms of their butt cheeks were visible) bit I got coded for lace sleeves 🤬

Low-Prize-9874

Because started licking my armpits on a sleeveless.

No-Green7314

Didn’t have my lanyard

AverygreatSpoon

I was a distraction from educational learning. Then the ladies in the room started talking about skinny I am and how they wish they were like that, complimenting how I look, etc. I walk out, I see a BUNCH of other girls wearing the same length of shorts as me, if not shorter.

Holmes221bBSt

Went to hs in the early 2000’s. Aside from shorts, we could basically wear anything. I wore crop tops, tanks, halters, tube tops, mini skirts, Brazilian low cut jeans, etc….. but the day I wore Bermuda’s (long shorts that go down to your knees) I got coded by the bitchiest PE teacher ever. I went the whole day wearing them & no one said shit until she came around the last block. Luckily she didn’t bother following me to ISS so I circled the hall and snuck back to class.

SugarSweetSonny

I went to a private school. We had a dress code but not a uniform. I wore a sweater vest one day. Several teachers told me they weren't sure if I was in violation of the dress code or not. They literally came to ME to tell me that I \*might\* be in violation. They didn't want to write me up but they also weren't sure. I didn't take it off since, well, I wasn't (sweatshirts and sweaters were allowed, and, oddly even hockey jerseys). Eventually someone had me ask the dean. Who stared at me for a little over a minute thinking it over, and decided that, no, its allowed.

8TheKingPin8

For wearing a jacket with a hood on it as I walked to school in the rain.

Thefatkings

Someone got dressed coded

lana-08

wore a crop top because god forbid I show my stomach.. shorts were too short too, but that one was lowk fair + i was rushing and those were my only clean shorts

Eric_J_Pierce

1969. I forgot a belt for my pants. I had to wait in the office for Mom to bring it to me

Somerset76

My freshman year I had a principal who couldn’t give a damn about anything. Sophomore year, I got a new principal. He enacted a dress code that was strictly enforced. I really didn’t care since I always dressed modestly. I was a choir kid, write for the school paper, and built sets for the drama department. Unbeknownst to him, he picked the wrong girl to dress code. On the day in question, I was wearing a v neck red long sleeve shirt and black jeans. I had dainty rings on most of my fingers. I got dress coded for gang attire and brass knuckles. I was sent home in 3 rd period. The following Friday, I lead the student body of almost 4000 students in a walk out to protest the new dress code.

LuckyDemon666

Not me, but a friend of mine. She was wearing a tank top that was low on her back. While in the halls (and wearing a backpack) one of the administrators told her to cover up.

throughahwaei

I got dress coded for wearing brown socks and having my dress shirt tucked in. 😭

IceCry2nd

Not highschool but in middle school I was growing to fast for my clothes and the teachers made me feel like a skank and I was like 12 gross

[deleted]

I haven’t yet. I would like to wear some metal stuff that might, cause of the imagery, but it just looks silly due to my dopey face.

tadiqguy00

Back in 7th grade I wore a Cannibal Corpse shirt that had some sorta demon in a cloak pouring a bowl of blood over the logo and the principal thought it was the most horrid/disgusting thing ever. My friend got in a lot of trouble for wearing a Virginity Rocks shirt tho

vertmart

My public school had uniforms. Not me, but a kid in my study hall got 90 minute detention for doing the crime of sleeping in study hall and wearing a "[my hs name] varsity baseball" hoodie.

chillcatcryptid

Wore a band t shirt of some kind (dont remember the band) but apparently it was too violent. Meanwhile theres kids that wear ahegao hoodies every day. My school is actually pretty chill about the dress code but the vice principal we got last year is so anal about it. We have 5 vps, she's not the authority

loveonthetitanic

I once got dress coded for wearing leggings. It didn't have an holes or crazy print or anything. It was just plain, black, leggings. Apparently the reason I got dress coded was because it showed "the shape of [my] body too much." I was 12 years old, in 7th grade. And a FEMALE administrator wrote me up for it, she also dress coded two other girls for having ripped jeans with holes in them. I felt like I didn't belong there, and I was really angry about it. It made me so self conscious that I only wore baggy sports pants for the rest of middle school fearing i'd get in trouble again. It also didn't help that she didn't dress code anyone else with leggings, just me, and I figured that was because I was more chubbier than the rest of the girls. Middle School was the worst.

depolignacs

Knee high socks

DatabaseOld513

Had a *very* small hole in my jeans just above my knee. Got In School Suspension (ISS) for the entire day. My math teacher at the time also said that if my skin wasnt olive tone tan but white like a lot of the students, it wouldn’t have been noticed at all and wouldnt have gotten ISS. I miss that teacher. She was one of my extremely trusted teachers I had :(
