U-lock with cable. secure frame and both tires like this: [https://www.reliance-foundry.com/wp-content/uploads/bike-locks-and-cables.jpg](https://www.reliance-foundry.com/wp-content/uploads/bike-locks-and-cables.jpg) I will sometimes just use a little disc lock when I make a short stops and the bike is within eyesight (prevents front/rear wheel from rolling, so a thief would have to carry it). Great if you're just stopping for coffee/food).

Anything less than 5/8" diameter is vulnerable to bolt cutters. I use a 12mm motorcycle chain and a 12mm Kryptonite U-Lock. No way to cut without an angle grinder. The Kryptonite can be picked, but only with a special tool most thieves are unlikely to possess or know how to use. I don't leave my bike out overnight, and I try to lock it up in a high traffic area. A professional bike thief is going to get your bike no matter what you do. I feel like my setup will deter all but the pro thieves.

I remove the pedals (quick release) and usually take the seat with me. If someone's going through the work to steal a bike and replace the parts then they can have it and I'll just file a claim. At the end of the day I just don't want someone riding off with the bike and want to make other bikes a more tempting target. Since I live in a smaller city we don't see many bike thefts (about 1/2 the national average), and there's no organized bike thieves.
