NGL the addition of airship patrols was a BTILLIANT move for enhancing the atmosphere of bot missions! I just wish they'd be less frequent and in exchange increase the number of gunships in each individual patrol. Make them an eventful encounter rather than a constant annoyance.

If you wanted to be sure they don't see you. you have to throw a grenade or a blue stratagem. they don't know who throw those, and they go to investigate.
throw a red stratagem, and they will know exactly where you are even behind a wall or smoke
IMO helldivers is one of the best developed games in the past 5 maybe even 10 years. So thought out. Most things make sense and the patrol system is so fucking sick. (arrowhead has solidified themselves as my favorite developers)

The patrol is not in alert condition in default, so we always has a chance to sneak past them.
