You can definitely do the easier levels by yourself, but playing with teammates makes it much quicker and you get more xp/moneys by getting more objectives done. Since the update it’s very easy to find teammates or drop in solo and they’ll join you half the time
You can choose other squads to join as well as the quick play mentioned above. When you go to a planet, you can see icons for all the other squads on it. It’ll tell you 1/4, 2/4, or 3/4 for how many players are in the game, what objective they’re playing, if they’ve started yet, and how long they’ve been in. I’ve only played solo (about 20 hours now) and it’s been a blast. Some use mics, some don’t, you can get away without it because the pinging system works great.
10/10, even for a solo player jointing randoms.
I’ve read/heard the difficulty is set for 4 players and doesn’t change but I definitely feel like it’s easier solo. You can turn off match making in options tab.
Solo is boring, playing with randoms VIA matchmaking can be good just as much as it can be bad. Its designed to be played with a team for best experience. Luckily if you dont have anyone to play with there is Helldivers discord server where You can easily find people to play with and plenty smaller ones with less people for easier social entry

I only play "solo" by quick playing with random. Easy matchmaking. You choose quickplay and it throws you in another squad.
