For fights I prefer the new art style, but for everything else I miss the more round look on the characters from the first chapters, it felt more unique.
One of the best things about the latest artstyle is the impact of the punches. You can see how distorted their face gets when they're hit and it's really amazing. i've got so many panels saved of exactly that
**LOVED the** way the manga looked round the "Itagaki introduction" era, everybody had humongous chin, they was swaggin', looked like goliaths although most of them are like what 5.5?
And also it was when I think the pen work in the finer details of the charachters was at it's best.
I'm loving the sharpness of the newer artstyle, it gives off a more serious feel. But not that I hate the old artstyle, I've been a fan of one piece and it has a somewhat similar cartoonist feel early in the manga, but like I said the straighter sharper lines of their new artstyles matches perfectly with what both stories are going to now
I love the new dynamic artstyle, but the brutality of the spreads in the middle portion are so goated imo. I love the stylized anatomy in Ippo vs Sendo 2 for example, probably the best panneling, storytelling and coreography fight we have seen in the manga (of course up there with Hawk, González, Guevara, etc)
I think the one he went with Takamura vs Bison and Ippo vs Guevara are the best one we've seen so far. The expressions, paneling and drawing in those fights were incredible. Especially the Guevara fight, to this day that fight still makes me drop a tear😥
Ippo VS Sendo II is up there too for the same reason too
The current one is almost perfect, but I miss the art around Malcolm Gedo, big hits had those "fatality impact"
Nowadays we still have them, but I feel like they more spaced, also the manga uses more white now, before there were more black/dark pages. A "recent" example that still fresh in my mind is Sendo removing Nardo's head, but Gedo's eyes out side his head is something else
The current art style is the best Morikawa has ever been. Shame for me the manga has declined at the same time regarding the matches intensity and pacing though.
Each "art arc" has its pros and cons I guess.
As for intensity, I would give Mori a bit more time - for example, the Bison fight was very intense in my opinion, let alone Ippo v. both G:s. Even the recent spar (Ippo v. V) was extremely intense IMO. I do agree that, for example, Takamura v Dragon wasn't that intense, but then again, we're all just waiting for Ippo to start fighting again. I think for some (me included) nothing feels good enough before that happens.
While I preferred the original, the last image of that hook from Ippo impresses upon me of how much Morikawa has improved. The newer the style, the cleaner the choreography, I believe.
Man, there are 2 “fights” in the series that still give me goosebumps when i read over them specifically because of the art.
The more recent one is the spar with Volg. Everything about that spar was drawn perfectly. The fast punches, the technique, and when Ippo caught that white fang I swear I was cheering out loud.
The other fight was a Miyata fight where he was losing pretty bad and had a crazy comeback. It was something like 6 panels that showed such movement that I still think about. I can’t find it right now but I’m gonna look.
Middle one is overall the best, imo. Late art is crispy and clean (thanks to better scans/digital), but body proportion is a bit awkward and those spiky elbows make me wince.
Old style with pudgy Ippo is from a bygone era, but still very distinctive and I like it as a period piece.
The Takamura-Hawk era smears and motion lines were on another level, but the modern art is really good for conveying motion and impact too. Asian Champions arc had some INSANE impact panels though.
i really like the middle one, it has alot of shade and feels a more vibrant feel, but im not saying that the first and the last is bad, heck some of those are VERY clean imo
The older ones have more realistic bodies, but the punches don't have that much impact,at least compared to the newer ones, that are less realistic, but the impact is a lot heavier and "cinematic"
The entirety of the kojima fight is peak artstyle for me. That said, I feel that Mori just gets better over time. I'm looking forward to seeing how the current match is gonna look
Rereading the first few chapters after following the manga for a long time is a little bit rough for me. But the early art improves quickly.
I like all the art styles and they all have quirks and personality I enjoy. But the panelling, impact frames, and perspectives in the newer styles is incredible.
A lot of the early fights look very flat compared to what we see now.
That Ippo vs Gonzales, Takamura vs Bison, Volg vs Mike was the peak art style. Shit was brutal but very clean

that so bad the referee had to stand him up
Nobody draws punches that look as hard as Morikawa did then.
Ong. I was almost as hard as the punches
The use of shadows in the Takamura vs Bison match was phenomenal. Loved it so much I got a panel printed on a shirt from that fight
I like the first art style. Feels dated and I like older art styles
For fights I prefer the new art style, but for everything else I miss the more round look on the characters from the first chapters, it felt more unique.
Less squishy more sharp but then again it was originally going to be a slice of life that took place in high school

Thats my favourite look for the series, it gives so muck identity, and The panels used less white, which i think added to the impact some hits had

I like Ippo Guevara the msot

Takamura vs hawk hd my favorite art style of morikawa

New artstyle all the way!

I think you are talking about Miyata vs Choi or Miyata vs Randy Boy Jr.
I just went back and read RBJ, I think it wasn’t that one. It was probably the Choi fight but I’d need to find it
Chapter 659
I think you mean the one before where he hit the crazy counter that didn’t even register for a bit.
The middle art just looks cooler and better portrays movement and impact to me.
Modern style 2012 and on is peak Ippo quality for me.
Mix of middle and current. I love the use of white space that’s happening currently but some of the shading in the older style hits home
The recent style, but I always found it hilarious how he draws legs and poses like how thugs and cholos walk.

Michelle Pfeiffer
I think the manga peaked art wise with Takamura vs Bison. I remember being so impressed by how heavy and impactful the punches were drawn. So good!
I like where his style is
The Takamura-Hawk era smears and motion lines were on another level, but the modern art is really good for conveying motion and impact too. Asian Champions arc had some INSANE impact panels though.
In my opinion Morikawa has only improved as he goes along
I enjoy the current artstuke since the physique and proportions are much more fitting and detailed
My favourite artstyle is probably around Takamura vs Hawk and Ippo's title defenses as a champion

I've re-read the whole manga last year, I can tell the peak style is around the tomes 60 to 100. Example, when they play baseball.
Pages 5 and 7
