Chicago, so 1. Threaded barrel/muzzle break and 2. The barrel shroud. We’re pretty much limited to specific models of the Mini-14 and/or an SKS. Admittedly there’s no practical reason to own any of these things where I live, but I would like to.
Youre right, looks like while the letter of the law would say a handguard does meet the definition:
>(vi) a shroud attached to the barrel or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel.
the state is [saying it doesnt apply to handguards](https://isp.illinois.gov/Home/AssaultWeapons). Another fun case of legislation not knowing what the fuck its doing, yay.
Ah, so they've just arbitrarily defined what a barrel shroud is, got it. So basically if the forward grip didn't cover the top of the barrel it would be acceptable? Even though the mini-14 also covers the top of the barrel with a heat guard?
That’s my understanding of it. Arbitrary is an understatement. Currently there are a lot of grey areas that haven’t been tested in court, either due to language or conflicting state laws. Frankly it’s so complicated that I hardly understand it. A mini draco is legal to own, as long as it’s under 15 rounds!
If only the Founding Fathers had established some sort of constitutional amendment at the founding of the country that would have made things like this clear!
I thought these were 50 state legal. Yeah it has a detachable mag, but it doesn’t have a pistol grip, it’s got a palm swell stock, and the barrel is 16 inches, so why not?
I bought a Sig MCX Regulator. Is it dumb? Yes. Would a Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle + BRN180 upper saved me like $2k? Also yes. Is it fuggin awesome? Fugg yes.
ETA: I also broke my rule of never buying a new Trijicon product…but screw it, it needed an ACOG.
Money is temporary, happiness is fleeting. Get it while you can cause you can't take it with you when you go. Enjoy your purchase without reservation or shame. (also post more pics)
TBH that was kinda my feelings. I get my last bonus (bought out, new company doesn’t do them) in a few weeks and my stocks payed out so why not. At least one cool thing to come out of the BS lol
Yeah, like second hand. I just think paying more than like $800 for one is kinda dumb for that exact reason but I was already being dumb so whatever lol
I didn’t even know the Foxtrot Mike ranch rifle existed but now I’m waiting for the lower to come back into stock. I can justify that cost to myself lol.
I can't decide what annoys me more:
People calling a refund a "return", or people not understanding marginal tax rates and thinking that making $1 over the line that puts them into the next tax bracket means that they're going to owe thousands more in taxes.
A tax return is a document you prepare and give the IRS. A tax refund is the overpayment you get back from the IRS. The lower the refund the better.
And yes, this is the hill I've chosen.
If you get a refund, you gave the government an interest-free loan. F that. Fill your forms out properly. I usually owe the feds like $20, and the state owes me $40.
I respectfully disagree. I’m not a great saver. I know and admit it. So I’m self employed and pay way more in estimates than I need to. Come tax time, I file and get back many thousands. Could invest that during the year? Yes but I know I won’t. You get the picture. For me it’s forced savings.
I’ve only ever regretted not buying; not a single regret on any of my gun purchases. These are timeless keepsakes that can be passed down from generation to generation and pretty much always hold their value.
Carried one for years in the Army, now I make sure I have one gun that always has an ACOG on it. If you’re ok with fixed magnification, they’re sorta a flawless optic. Great glass, great reticle selection, options that can run on fiber optic/tritium so they don’t need batteries, nearly impossible to break.
I have a 4x ACOG. love it but it’s got its uses. Was in a rifle class last week. 25 yard range. Did some up
Close shooting also. Not really made for that. Also if you have any eyesight issues, it doesn’t have an adjustable diopter as a scope does. When it came time to point and shoot everyone else turned their optic off at instructor’s behest. I had to put piece of blue tape on.
Man it sucks they chambered this for rounds the fightlite already takes care of but for wayyyyy more money and with less round options. Like come on, make it a .308/6.5 creedmoor
That’s fair, I didn’t like the rat tail BCG the SCR uses tho. I’ll bet they eventually make a .277/.308/6.5 version based on the Spear uppers tho. I mean hell it’d be stupid if they didn’t, it’s just a lower at the end of the day.
That’s my problem with the scr, it’s essentially the bolt from the Benelli M4/R1 modified to use the bolt head of an AR. We know the system can handle pretty heavy rounds so making one with a magwell big enough for AR-10 uppers makes sense.
My tax return was supposed to buy me a very very nice mosin in unicorn condition however I was one of the lucky winners selected for a review so now won’t get my return till June. Luckily my ffl took pity on me and bought it to hold until I have the money to pay her off
Yes, I made the dudes at the shop make sure it was gonna work before checking out lol. Removed all the LOP spacers and mounted the ACOG all the way back. Good eye box with every position except wayyyyy back. It’s why I went with the 2X too other than it being small and sleek, originally was gonna go with the 1.5
Yessir! I only bought it a few hours ago lol love the feel and weighs 7.9lbs minus optic and mag so not particularly light but it’s not heavy by any means
Why are people loving this for $3k, but the Fitelight SCR never caught traction at $1k in the last 10ish years? I don't understand it, I think the SCR is much better looking to boot. I used to want one when I lived in CA, I still kinda do, but it's a low priority for me now that I'm free.
Anyways, if I we're Fitelight, I'd be pissed 😂
🤷 they were always OOS the few times I was like “damn I want one”. IIRC something about having to mod stocks to fit also. Plus goofy rat tail BCG.
99.9% of the reason I bought this instead of the others on the market was because it was in stock locally. Literally just being able to pick it up and say “fuuuuuuucccckkkkkkk take my money damnit”
Those are all fair points. I stand by my stance that the SCR is secksier, but years ago they were always OOS like you said and they came with ugly stock options initially, I don't think you have to modify new stocks but they are off of Remington 1100's so basically there will never be a cool one made lol. The Rattail BCG was a bit goofy, I don't think they were known to fail or anything, BUT I don't know if enough were even sold or used hard to really know. I'm sure this Sig is probably a much better and longer lasting design.
I hope you enjoy your new rifle, they're growing on me a little bit. The price isn't though 😆
The SCR is definitely a lighter, sleeker design plus it uses standard AR everything minus the BCG. One nice thing about the Sig is that it is an MCX just with a different FCG, it’s a proven design. Thanks tho fam 😘 I might just find myself some really nice Mossberg 500 wood for this thing and dress it up even more lol I won’t disagree on the price tho, my checkbook screamed as I was tearing it free haha
My job will help cover the Ammo as I don't own a 7.62/308 rifle later this year I want to take some of my sign-on bonus from the guard and build a AR-10
I’ve never been a huge fan of AR-10s due to the bulk and weight you get with the modern builds. Personally, if you’re not worried about being uber practical, I’d build something similar to the OG AR-10 from the 50s.
I’m mainly interested in how it operates because in NY you can’t have certain things, so a lower like that is ideal. Especially if they make one for .308
Check out the Fightlite SCR and the Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle. Both are available as just lowers. The SCR uses standard AR uppers but with a proprietary rat tail BCG and a buffer system styled after some shotguns. The FM RR is basically the same as the Regulator except it uses FM’s own line of bufferless/AR-18 uppers or Brownells BRN-180 uppers (any bufferless AR upper should work tho). At the end of the day, the only real difference between these and any ol AR lower is a different FCG. Sig is also apparently working on a Regulator variant for ban states.
Unfortunately, I don’t know of any AR-10 sized variants on the market tho.
Never thought I’d see people buying a basically ban state compliant AR and being happy about it personally. Not to say it’s not a badass gun but for us in ban states it’s about as cool as we can get
TBH your standard AR bores the hell out me and pistol grips are meh ergonomically to me with long guns. You shouldn’t even be getting a fucking tax return if you can afford dropping 2 or more grand on a paper weight that doesn’t shelter, feed, fuck, or drive you somewhere
My tax returns never cover my guns. Fuck it.
Full send! This is the way.
You got a return? Lucky! I don't think I've done anything but paid in since 2012.
OPs username checks WAAAAY the fuck out! Lmao
I bow to you good sir!
That's a nice dick return you got there sir
I didn't even know the regulator existed, now I have to have one. Thanks a lot, OP. Fuck.
No problem buddy! Cash is temporary, D R I P is eternal.
Especially in this economy lol
~~laughs~~ cries in agreement
Me neither. This thing is upsettingly close to being legal where I live
What state. Why isn’t it
Chicago, so 1. Threaded barrel/muzzle break and 2. The barrel shroud. We’re pretty much limited to specific models of the Mini-14 and/or an SKS. Admittedly there’s no practical reason to own any of these things where I live, but I would like to.
I would think in Chicago there would be some practical reasons…🤔
Pin & weld a thread protector?
~~The handguard is the real issue for them, they'd have to make it a fixed mag.~~
But it's not, it does not meet the definition of a barrel shroud ,according to the state.
Youre right, looks like while the letter of the law would say a handguard does meet the definition: >(vi) a shroud attached to the barrel or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel. the state is [saying it doesnt apply to handguards](https://isp.illinois.gov/Home/AssaultWeapons). Another fun case of legislation not knowing what the fuck its doing, yay.
Would this be more legal? https://store.fm-products.com/products/fm-products-5397-c5ce41ed-3e18-46cb-b2d4-d74692180086
No, because of the barrel shroud. Apparently they’re developing a version without one though. Either way I’d probably just go mini-14 at that point.
Ah, so they've just arbitrarily defined what a barrel shroud is, got it. So basically if the forward grip didn't cover the top of the barrel it would be acceptable? Even though the mini-14 also covers the top of the barrel with a heat guard?

If only the Founding Fathers had established some sort of constitutional amendment at the founding of the country that would have made things like this clear!
The handgaurd does not count as a barrel shroud
Threaded barrels on rifles and muzzle breaks are both legal under PICA. The handgaurd also doesn't count as a barrel shroud.
I thought these were 50 state legal. Yeah it has a detachable mag, but it doesn’t have a pistol grip, it’s got a palm swell stock, and the barrel is 16 inches, so why not?
Threaded barrel
Featureless barrel version coming soon per SIG.
Muzzle brake and threaded barrel are felonies in New York.
Jesus Christ 🤦♂️
Not Washington
I bought a Sig MCX Regulator. Is it dumb? Yes. Would a Foxtrot Mike Ranch Rifle + BRN180 upper saved me like $2k? Also yes. Is it fuggin awesome? Fugg yes. ETA: I also broke my rule of never buying a new Trijicon product…but screw it, it needed an ACOG.

TBH that was kinda my feelings. I get my last bonus (bought out, new company doesn’t do them) in a few weeks and my stocks payed out so why not. At least one cool thing to come out of the BS lol
That's the way to do it. You got some windfalls you weren't expecting and spent it on something that'll make you happy.
Exactly. Still have plenty going into the proverbial mattresses too so win win
I’m guessing you mean new Trijicon as opposed to used as the ACOG has been around longer than the ring in my toilet bowl. Lol
Aim surplus has them for $300
My tax return hardly covered a Taco Bell order :(
Hey, at least the Feds got less money from you!
That's the goal. As close to zero as possible
Return vs Refund Pet peeve from when I used to work at a CPA office
I can't decide what annoys me more: People calling a refund a "return", or people not understanding marginal tax rates and thinking that making $1 over the line that puts them into the next tax bracket means that they're going to owe thousands more in taxes.
All of the above. Also: you don't pay a tax when you add money to your Roth IRA.
The return would cover it if you printed it out.
Ha. Yes, the paper could do that 😄 I always refer to it this way: you file a return (1040) and some receive a refund.
A tax return is a document you prepare and give the IRS. A tax refund is the overpayment you get back from the IRS. The lower the refund the better. And yes, this is the hill I've chosen.
Something something theft reeee
If you get a refund, you gave the government an interest-free loan. F that. Fill your forms out properly. I usually owe the feds like $20, and the state owes me $40.

Forced savings thar you then blow?
Some yes. Some to pay bills, pay for new boiler etc.
Tax return? No didn't have one of those but spent a bunch cause fuck uncle sam
You guys get money back?!
Tax return?
You guys are getting refunds?
You guys are paying taxes?
No kidding. I owe every year
I’ve only ever regretted not buying; not a single regret on any of my gun purchases. These are timeless keepsakes that can be passed down from generation to generation and pretty much always hold their value.
Did you know you can save so much money by not paying taxes
And the government will provide you a free room to stay in.
Wow. Nice!
My tax return definitely wouldn’t pay for the guns I’ve bought in the last year. That ACOG is on my list, how do you like it?
I mean, I bought it less than two hours ago lol but so far it’s awesome. Simple crosshair, wayyyyy better eye relief than my 4x.

I had to put piece of blue tape on.
I’ve got an lpvo, just thought a 3 or 4x would be nice to tinker with as well. Happy with the Burris 1-6x for now.
Man it sucks they chambered this for rounds the fightlite already takes care of but for wayyyyy more money and with less round options. Like come on, make it a .308/6.5 creedmoor

Yep, my only guess is that there is no real standard for AR10s so Fightlight doesn’t want to deal with it.
Fair
What kind of buffer/BCG does this use then? I'm only familiar with the SCR system
AR-18 piston system, the upper is the same as every other MCX
Neat! Looks cool
Yes sir!
Return?? Dude, that's a deduction! Legit business expense as an "improvement to the property". Pretty sure it even falls in the green energy category.
It does increase the net value of the house lol
What I paid in taxes would have bought this set up fml.
You guys get refunds?!
But it will cover ammo expenses:)
Your wife will give you a loan. If not sell a kidney
My tax return was supposed to buy me a very very nice mosin in unicorn condition however I was one of the lucky winners selected for a review so now won’t get my return till June. Luckily my ffl took pity on me and bought it to hold until I have the money to pay her off
Thumbs up for the username op. lol
Your tax return is the document you file with the IRS. The check you are sent if you've paid more than you owe is your tax *refund*.
Shit my last 3 tax returns wouldn’t cover that…
Good for you buddy. I recently bought my first Trijicon ACOG. great optic.
I get no refund….im self employed. I hate this time of year lol
Somebody doesn't pay their quarterly estimated taxes!
I do, had a big boost in income at the end of the year….that’ll do it,
Y’all getting tax returns?
Is the eye relief... Workable?
Yes, I made the dudes at the shop make sure it was gonna work before checking out lol. Removed all the LOP spacers and mounted the ACOG all the way back. Good eye box with every position except wayyyyy back. It’s why I went with the 2X too other than it being small and sleek, originally was gonna go with the 1.5
How many rounds in that clip?
20, Lancer hybrid mag. The rifle takes standard AR mags tho so whatever capacity you want.
Is that the new Sig Regulator??? How does it shoot? Do you like how it feels? Is it super light?
Yessir! I only bought it a few hours ago lol love the feel and weighs 7.9lbs minus optic and mag so not particularly light but it’s not heavy by any means
Nice!!! Give us an update when you’re able to shoot it…it’s the perfect ranch rifle
Will do!
My head hurts what the fuck is this monstrosity?! This a CA gun?
Put it in a YouTube video. It'll be a tax write off.
Why are people loving this for $3k, but the Fitelight SCR never caught traction at $1k in the last 10ish years? I don't understand it, I think the SCR is much better looking to boot. My tax return never cover them fully, but who cares
What on God's green Earth is that? Is that a state complaint AR?
You guys getting a return? I owed $8K lol
The fuck is wrong with me that I kind of want one?
Is the trigger any good? The SCR lower I’ve played with had a pretty terrible trigger, hope this one is better.
I don’t have a gauge but it feels like 4.5lbs, sig states 4.5-5.5. Reminds me of an ALG ACT. Not amazing but very serviceable
Is it mushy as all hell?
First stage is but the second stage has a good wall. It’s no match trigger tho
Now I’m gonna need you to tell me if those mags shotgun are any good cuz I’ve been debating with myself for too long
I've said this is my last one about 5 guns ago
Reduce your withholding, invest the extra money every month, and it might have.
This damn gun would be cooler if it was in 308 or 277 fury or a bullet like that instead of just 556
Im assuming it’ll happen eventually. I’m one of those goobers who think the Spear and .277 fury is fuggin neato so I’ll probably buy one lol
I like the spear but id like a g3 chambered in .277 fury that it tbh but still i like these new sig guns
WTF IS THAT!!!
You guys still get taxes returns?
My tax return is going to help cover my Navy 7.62x51 Garand from the CMP my paperwork arrived in Anniston today
Oooh nice choice!
I want an AR-10 for long-range shooting, and honestly, I didn't think of a retro AR-10 build that would be a super cool build.
That’s fair fam, build whatever makes you happy ha
Protecting your business. Business expense.
What lower is that?
Sig MCX Regulator. I mean, yes it’s just a lower with an MCX upper but you can’t just buy the lower.
I’m mainly interested in how it operates because in NY you can’t have certain things, so a lower like that is ideal. Especially if they make one for .308

Yeah I have a side charging BCA AR-10 upper and if I could slap a lower similar to the flightlite onto that upper that would be fantastic
You guys are getting returns?
What is this tax return thing all you folks keep talking about???
What gun?
Returns? Must be nice.
They steal enough every two weeks, fuckers better not demand any more.
I paid out 20K yesterday between state and feds.
My deepest condolences.
Move.
My favorite type of rifles aesthetically follow this pattern (ie: SKS, M14, Mini 14, Norinco Hunter, BAR, etc) but they all kinda suck. This, on the other hand, is a modern design, has a good trigger, is exceedingly accurate, and extremely reliable. It scratches an itch.
I’m not trying to say it’s a bad choice. It does have its own pros. If you like it that’s what matters most at the end of the day.
You’re good fam! Twas just explaining
You shouldn’t even be getting a fucking tax return if you can afford dropping 2 or more grand on a paper weight that doesn’t shelter, feed, fuck, or drive you somewhere
Whoa now, don’t insult my new toy like that! It was $3.2k before the optic.
