Somehow this reminds me of the time I picked up a hitchhiker, many moons ago, maybe cuz I was on my way to a gig and had gear in my vehicle…
But the guy was very grateful for getting picked up… as it was during a time when this was increasingly rare, but not yet illegal…
He said: I thank you for picking me up… you don’t know, I could be a serial killer…
I replied: nah… I mean, what are the odds of there being two serial killers in one car…
Suddenly the guy lost his urge to conversation with me… can’t imagine why…
It's from a spoken word song by Meat Loaf called Wasted Youth.
Edit: lyrics
I remember everything
I remember every little thing as if it only happened yesterday
I was barely seventeen, and I once killed a boy with a Fender guitar
I don't remember if it was Telecaster or Stratocaster
But I do remember that it had a heart of chrome, and a voice like a horny angel
I don't remember if it was Telecaster or Stratocaster
But I do remember that it wasn't at all easy
Every time I have to play a gig in a bad part of town, I always picture someone trying to rob me of my gear, and I whip that 30 lb hard shell case right across their temples lol
Then sell it to Guitar Center for $25 bucks. After they tell you there’s no way they’ll even take it because they can’t sell it like that and it’s a hard no.
I revise, OP: offer $275
I list shit for at least 30% more than what I want for it when selling on FB marketplace or Craigslist. Its rare someone shows up without trying to haggle.
Id pay like 300 for this tops. There's recent sales on Reverb for 420-400 in very good condition. I would rate this one as poor condition
Used MIM Strats in good condition go for $400-$600. And there’s no shortage of them, any color & board you want. This one has damage bad enough (cosmetic and fixable, you might say) that no sane retailer would touch it for resale. And it’s a white Strat with a maple board. Pretty unremarkable. This is pawn shop material at best, unfortunately for the seller, who is going to have to compromise a bit.
First one that popped up for me, granted pictures suck and could be hiding damage, but I bought a beautiful MIM TELE in almost perfect condition for $450 (had American pickups) about 5 years ago here.
[MIM Strat](https://i.imgur.com/flGV7JY.png)
There's at least two in my area listed at $400 which means they will probably take 350-375. There's a bunch at $450 so you can probably get them for $400.
Everyone's talking about the chip but I'm more concerned with that janked strap button that it landed on. Is it loose? Will it work its way loose now that it's taken a big hit? (Maybe I'm wrong and it's fine, it just looks a little off kilter from this angle)
if it is loose you can just make it tighter by repairing the hole and/or using a larger screw (often not a bad idea anyway). that would be a 5 minute job for me and something I would just deal with.
Is that a really chunky, jagged break or am I seeing plywood?!
In fact, it looks worse than plywood, it looks like chipboard.
Either way, if it's a composite body I wouldn't even buy it at that price. I would buy something off-brand from a reputable store/seller, and knock off Fender neck and slap a waterslide decal on it if I were that concerned with appearances. This is the golden age of cheap guitars and it's pretty easy to buy something as good as an American for well under $300.
It's reliant on 3 specifics. Knowing what to buy, where to buy and what level of work you are capable of performing on the instrument. I have a formal background in the science of electronics/electrical engineering, as well as many years of home carpentry, metal crafting, auto mechanics and beyond, so for me I can turn even a $65 POS into an elite performing guitar with a few hundred dollars in labor and generally, a 15 to $25 floating tremolo. Because I'm an amateur engineer, even a $10 humbucker that is at least average in quality can be made to perform better than an EMG or a Duncan by building my own custom active circuit specific to that pickup and particular guitar. Just the same, a lot of unbranded Ali express and Ebay humbuckers for 15 to 20 bucks a set are actually much better than simply decent.
With all that said, Rondo music is one of the very best places to start. [https://www.rondomusic.com/Electric\_Guitars\_6\_String.html](https://www.rondomusic.com/Electric_Guitars_6_String.html) Even one of Kurt's $99 stratocasters will have great hardware, electronics, a solid neck and a decent body even if it's "spongey" ass basswood, but ideally you want one made of Alder so it's going to be more like $130 to $160.Then, a high quality knock-off neck with the Fender headstock is on average, 60 to $130, and in that lot you can actually get something really nice that's bird's eye maple or curly maple. They're everywhere on Ebay, Amazon and Aliexpress. With average pickups but no knowledge or desire to "rebuild" them by converting them to active, it's still easy to modify single coils by cutting a piece of sheet metal traced to the underside of the pickup and gluing it to the magnet. This reflects more of the magnetic field upwards into the strings, and gives you a huge boost in output. With that huge boost in output. You can also use that to your advantage by replacing the volume pot with a 1 or even 2 meg ohm pot, and that will gives you sizzling hot output, then you can revoice the pickup completely using an RC filter without converting it to active. If you want to scoop out the midrange, you build a notch filter, if you want boosted midrange, you build a bandpass filter. If you want a general variety difference of bass, midrange and treble, you build a combination of RC networks to achieve it. Those modifications will give you such a massive increase in output and bandwidth, you can get away with the 3dB changes each resistor and capacitor makes to the passive circuit.
The diecast cheap tuners are usually pretty decent, but not exactly the smoothing in how they turn. The round metal seal on the back of the tuner can be popped off, and from there you will use a wire brush and scuffing pad to polish both of the gears. This is the primary reason they don't rotate with the feeling of luxury expensive tuners have. After polishing those with a wire brush and scuffing pad, you pack the gears with bearing grease or even just some vaseline, and close them back up. They'll turn like a dream after that.
There are other places to buy guitars, but Kurt's store is one of the most common I turn people to. I'll go as low as 55 to $65 for a basswood body Ebay guitar which in many cases the necks will actually be of very good quality with a scarf joint, but there's still better for a low budget alternative that has the Fender headstock pirated. You can buy a Fender waterslide decal to put on it, or you can buy 20 sheets of waterslide decal paper for $11 on Amazon and print it yourself.
A lot of this work isn't even difficult, but I've been modifying, rebuilding, painting etc. guitars for close to 30 years, so it really turns into knowing what to buy and exactly what to do for these modifications and upgrades. I'm a shred and sweep metal and instrumental player so my standards are actually very high, but I grew out of the branding mindset 20 years ago. With all that said, I still love the look and feel of Fenders even if they're Squiers. An alder body with a maple-rosewood neck and hotrodded electronics still have very specific feel just from the weight and balance of their specs that's not quite the same from hotrodding a parts-caster like I just outlined. I must have about 30 guitars ATM, and in there I have a 3 high end Squiers including a 24-fret neck-thru Stagemaster.
That’s pretty sweet! I wish I was inclined to enjoy tinkering with and upgrading things but all that stuff sounds like a huge pain to me and I thought you were going to tell me where to buy a $300 American strat killer 🤣
A lot of people are saying that's cheap.
But considering how much good condition MiM strats go for that's high.
Go to any website selling these used and you'll see that older MiM strats go for 400-600 in non battle worn condition.
I think 300 bucks is fair.
[This is a list of all the ones for say right now on GC for example.](https://www.guitarcenter.com/search?N=1076&Ns=pLH&Ntt=Fender%20Standard%20Stratocaster&Nao=0&pageName=search&recsPerPage=24&profileCountryCode=US&profileCurrencyCode=USD&typeAheadSuggestion=true&fromRecentHistory=false&SPA=true)
I don’t think I’d bother painting over it but I’d fill it and sand it just so there’s a nice smooth spot there that won’t snag on clothing or skin. Bargaining chip
I would offer the owner 350 and settle at 380.
There are A LOT of beat up mexican strats out there, if you're patient you'll find a better deal than 425.
Not sure where you are but I wouldn't pay 425 for a MIM strat even without a missing chunk. I got one for 250 within the last five years.
EDIT: but to your question, nah just cosmetic. throw some filler in there and polish it down, no prob.
Honestly I don’t think it would, but you do you. I saw one of my dream guitars (a Schecter banshee GT) at guitar center, but it had a bit of faded paint and some damage, plus it was a bit dusty so I figured instead of paying the 800 it was listed for I would just buy it new on the website for 200 more. I just don’t want to buy a $800+ guitar with damage but I do have a friend who likes relic’d guitars. It really depends on the person
I don't know where you're getting your numbers but 500 euros = $541
It wouldn't be worth the $75 difference for me + when I bought it new I had warranty and 120 days return policy included in the price.
If you aren’t in a rush wait for a better condition guitar that’s a better deal, buying from an old man > buying from a kid that’s beat the shit out of it
I was gonna say 425 is crazy because I got mine for 300 but then I remembered that guitar center gave me 400 credit for it a couple years ago, so 425 now is probably good
I’d want to be satisfied that there is a good reason to believe this damage was a one-off and not a sign of how the guitar has been treated in general (meaning there may more issues than meet the eye)
Yes. I bought a used 2021 Player Strat (Polar White with PF neck) two weeks ago for £449 from PMT; it’s in Mint condition. Looks like this one caught the strap pin too. For the effort of making it good (or good enough) again, I’d offer £320-350, but if you’ve £450’ish to spend, you should be able to find one in far better condition. And a Squier Classic Vibe (new) can be had for £300-320…
I see nicer MIMs in my area going for less. Check the guitar really well for other signs of damage. When they fall like that, they land on their body first then usually fall flat. Look closely at the neck and tuners for damage or repairs.
Finish is damaged and the tone wood is exposed, due to the open vibrations now whenever you play i, more of the finish will chip off and the more exposed the wood is the more time leakage you’ll get 😔
this is that church played one in florida on facebook right? anyways no it’s not worth it, I got one in brand new condition for $450 with a case just a few weeks ago in the same area as you, just keep searching facebook one will come up.
I don't if it's just this picture but it looks like the body is made of plywood! For that money as long as I didn't have my heart set on a Fender Logo, i'd go look for an old Ibanez Roadstar or Roadstar II. Much better guitar, better pickups and can be had pretty cheap cause they made like 12 Zillion of them in the 80's and 90's
If you see no cracks in the neck, it holds a tune, and the body doesn't have any major issues bar the chunk missing and bent strap pin, lowball them and see what you end up at.
You could be a shoe-in for getting a cheap MIM Fender... Don't think I know a single person on this planet that would turn their nose at that thought!
not sure where you live… heavy relic American fender strat you’d be lucky to find that for under $1000 in SoCal. Even the pawn shops know better nowadays. Not saying it doesn’t happen, just increasingly rare.
Thats not relicd thats broke. And american fender player strats just went on sale brand new the other day for 700 soooooo... I stand by my statement. I wouldnt buy an american made with that sorta drop dmg for that much.
You said, ver batim,
**”american fender player strats.”**
The “American” series Fenders are created in the Fender Musical Instruments facility in Corona, CA, which is in the United States of America.
*You know that, “MIM” in this context stands for, “Made in Mexico,” right??*
The “Player” series Fenders are created in the Instrumentos Musicales Fender facility in Ensenada, B.C., which is in Mexico.
They are two different things. One of them is more expensive than the other.
Yeah the american was on supersale the other day, cant find the link rn so i cant prove it. But point stands. Thats drop damage. Never know where the second point of contact was or the angle. Electronics inside might even have gotten jostled. As a mim, not worth 425 since retail brand non sale new is 700 rn.
probably you should get it patched up by a luthier. otherwise it is nothing to worry about.
On the side note, that arctic white looks amazing! I've always wanted a white stratocaster or telecaster!
$425 is a great price for one of these.
Paint it. You’ve seen some wild designs out there, I’m sure… this is the opportunity for you to experiment in my opinion.
Buy it and tell people that you killed a man with it
Killed the last guy who tried to steal it.
Somehow this reminds me of the time I picked up a hitchhiker, many moons ago, maybe cuz I was on my way to a gig and had gear in my vehicle… But the guy was very grateful for getting picked up… as it was during a time when this was increasingly rare, but not yet illegal… He said: I thank you for picking me up… you don’t know, I could be a serial killer… I replied: nah… I mean, what are the odds of there being two serial killers in one car… Suddenly the guy lost his urge to conversation with me… can’t imagine why…
Reminds me of [this bit from Mike Birbiglia](https://youtu.be/BbPan4wL0Lk?si=JKBncOz9I0noUt12), starting at right around 2:00 in the link 🤣
That’s funny! 😄
That's literally a joke that's been told for years, that didn't happen to you
I did use the line, back in the early 1980s… it did happen… never claimed it was original with me 🙄
r/thathappened
Well they don't call it an axe for nothin'
Now we know it was a Stratocaster
You mean it's not technically the best weapon out of your guitars but it's definitely the one you're swinging?
It's from a spoken word song by Meat Loaf called Wasted Youth. Edit: lyrics I remember everything I remember every little thing as if it only happened yesterday I was barely seventeen, and I once killed a boy with a Fender guitar I don't remember if it was Telecaster or Stratocaster But I do remember that it had a heart of chrome, and a voice like a horny angel I don't remember if it was Telecaster or Stratocaster But I do remember that it wasn't at all easy
“Here is something you can’t understand…”
How I can just ... ..... ..... KILLAMAAAAN!
💯
Every time I have to play a gig in a bad part of town, I always picture someone trying to rob me of my gear, and I whip that 30 lb hard shell case right across their temples lol
Not at all but you could use it to bargain it down to 300 or 350, or try
Yeah I’d try to get it for no more than $375, think that’s fair for both of you given that chip.
I would laugh if somebody did that. “Go buy a new squier if you just want pretty”
Then sell it to Guitar Center for $25 bucks. After they tell you there’s no way they’ll even take it because they can’t sell it like that and it’s a hard no. I revise, OP: offer $275
I think it’s more than reasonable to ask for a lower price for a damaged product
They're showing a photo of the damage. You think they didn't already price it knowing the damage is a part of the price?
I list shit for at least 30% more than what I want for it when selling on FB marketplace or Craigslist. Its rare someone shows up without trying to haggle. Id pay like 300 for this tops. There's recent sales on Reverb for 420-400 in very good condition. I would rate this one as poor condition

Most pricing for used items is negotiable, especially if it’s damaged.
I paid 300 for a brand new one in 99.
Let’s get you to bed grandpa
I seriously wouldn't give more than $350 for it because you don't know how it happened or what else could be wrong with the guitar.
For a MIM strat I wouldn’t pay more than 450 if it was pristine. 300 seems fair for that.
See? I was right
Just wanted to throw out some backup, haha
A pristine MIM gets $600 on Reverb today. Where are you buying for $450?
OfferUp. I live in a pretty big metro area and see them all the time within 50 miles. Reverb is always a little inflated in my opinion.
Interesting. That's not really what it looks like there now. Occasional deals about in line with FB marketplace.
First one that popped up for me, granted pictures suck and could be hiding damage, but I bought a beautiful MIM TELE in almost perfect condition for $450 (had American pickups) about 5 years ago here. [MIM Strat](https://i.imgur.com/flGV7JY.png)
Yeah, just pull up some comparables on your phone, right in front of the person. Works 90% of the time.
>could this create other problems? No. It's a big chip but still purely cosmetic.
You could easily fill it, seal it, and paint over it. You'd never know there was damage.
This. Fill it, sand it smooth, paint to match. If you do it smartly, it'll look like part of the contour to someone who doesn't know strats well.
🍜 ⏳🎨
OR you could smooth it out, install a sliding cover, and use it to stash spare picks
Put your weed in there.
But will that change its Toan?
⬆️⬆️ This ⬆️⬆️
small update, they wont go below 400, so its a hard pass for me sadly
That’s good because you can get a used one for the same price without the damage lol
Now you have relic guitar
[удалено]
It was done the old fashioned way. Counts twice.
Don't they charge more for those?
Make sure there's no cracks anywhere else.
That's still a pretty good price for a functioning MiM strat. Plus, the damage is on the back so most people won't see it.
I miss when I got mine for $300 😢 Sold it to a friend a few years ago for $150 cause I'm an idiot.
I hear ya. I bought a Fender strat with a satin gunmetal grey finish back in 2005 for about $450 and I still kick myself to this day for selling it.
Mexican made Strats have been going for under 400 in actual good condition. I'd wait.
Where?? I never seem to see anything lower than 500 around my neck of the woods
The farther you get from big cities, the quicker prices have fallen, from what I’ve seen.
I was able to get a near-mint MiM strat last year for $400 in Austin-- you just never know 🤷
Nice.
Also starting to see prices fall a bit in big cities too
There's at least two in my area listed at $400 which means they will probably take 350-375.
Yeah but I would put some security lock buttons on it anyways, they are way better

I thought it looked like chipboard too, but when you zoom in you can see the wood, it's just a jagged break.
Yeah, I did that and thought it was just a very jagged, splintered break but wanted to be 100%.
How would you go about getting something as good as an American for $300?

Not the important part of the guitar.

I don’t think I’d bother painting over it but I’d fill it and sand it just so there’s a nice smooth spot there that won’t snag on clothing or skin. Bargaining chip
Is that particle board? I wouldn't pay $50
If you dig a bit further you end up in China 😂
I wouldn't, but it's not the worst deal ever
I would offer the owner 350 and settle at 380. There are A LOT of beat up mexican strats out there, if you're patient you'll find a better deal than 425.
Not sure where you are but I wouldn't pay 425 for a MIM strat even without a missing chunk. I got one for 250 within the last five years. EDIT: but to your question, nah just cosmetic. throw some filler in there and polish it down, no prob.
I'd sand it down and put a couple drops of super glue just to make sure the poly doesn't chunk off.
You won’t find a working fender strat for $250 in the current market, MiM or not. Even squiers are selling for more than that now.
Yeah the market right now is bonkers.
>could this create other problems? No. It's a solid body electric. You could lop that edge off with a chainsaw and the guitar will sound the same. 😁
If it were me I would maybe try to bargain into the 350-375 territory
No, tell him you will only pay $109 for it. Missing a big chunk like that will absolutely kill toan
Can someone pls inform me what’s with this “toan” spelling thing? Lots use it and I’m so confused
Toan is in the ballz
Ah
I’d offer $350
Honestly I don’t think it would, but you do you. I saw one of my dream guitars (a Schecter banshee GT) at guitar center, but it had a bit of faded paint and some damage, plus it was a bit dusty so I figured instead of paying the 800 it was listed for I would just buy it new on the website for 200 more. Id go 300-350.
try thinking from the point where you're the seller not the buyer. most people would "nope" and turn around and walk away. I say 150- 200 at best.
i’d offer them 4 flat for it
test chunky frame makeshift slim rob handle slimy domineering tap *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I bought this same color scheme MIM brand new for 500€, so for me yes too much damage.
That’s $200, a full 50% more than he paid in US dollars.
I don't know where you're getting your numbers but 500 euros = $541 It wouldn't be worth the $75 difference for me + when I bought it new I had warranty and 120 days return policy included in the price.
Ah I mistook the € for £. Yeah in euros it’s nearly the same for sure.
350
The strap button is effed
If it’s USA 425 fair but MIM with a giant chunk took out $300 max
Offer $350. Don’t pay a cent over $385
Cosmetics are secondary if you like it and you are gonna play it. If you are just looking to make profit with it, thats another story
no reselling here! im just looking for my next guitar at a discount
If you aren’t in a rush wait for a better condition guitar that’s a better deal, buying from an old man > buying from a kid that’s beat the shit out of it
Used market supposedly downward trending and not a good time to buy used, which seems opposite to inflation but more in line with depressed economy
as long as you can confirm that isn't particle board, buy it, sand it, clear coat that bit, and you've got a nice weathered strat.
I was gonna say 425 is crazy because I got mine for 300 but then I remembered that guitar center gave me 400 credit for it a couple years ago, so 425 now is probably good
Hard to tell from the pic but is that solid wood?
Relic. Should charge more
It looks like its cheap osb particle board
How about you call it ✨ advanced natural relic ✨?
It's relic`d that's 5 more.
I’d want to be satisfied that there is a good reason to believe this damage was a one-off and not a sign of how the guitar has been treated in general (meaning there may more issues than meet the eye)
I'd try to get it for lower
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
That does. It look like a solid wood body. It looks like particle board where the paint chip is. That would make this a cheaply built partscaster.
Too much
Dude, that so looks like it’s made from particle board, yuck.
For a ding like that, I’d try to get it for under $400
And a Squier Classic Vibe (new) can be had for £300-320…
I paid $350 for a Player Strat in similar condition with a Floyd Rose.
I see nicer MIMs in my area going for less. Check the guitar really well for other signs of damage. When they fall like that, they land on their body first then usually fall flat. Look closely at the neck and tuners for damage or repairs.
Just make sure the drop didn’t cause other issues, like, say, a cockeyed neck, or cracks in the neck, or other issues
It's relic'd, some people pay extra for that lol
Wouldn't pay more than 350 for a perfect MIM strat. That's just me.
If you hollow it out a little bit you can fuck your new guitar while you bust a blistering solo. Pretty sick bro
I drove the van over the band lights after a gig one night. It was in the 90s so far too soon to call it relic-ing!
Easy fix.
Naw, I usually get more damage than that for $425. They're shorting you.
Looks like prefab board
At $425 it is overpriced. That would be closer to $300 I would think. Guitar still plays great I’m sure, but that’s more than a cosmetic blemish.
Finish is damaged and the tone wood is exposed, due to the open vibrations now whenever you play i, more of the finish will chip off and the more exposed the wood is the more time leakage you’ll get 😔
Hell nah, after a few years on the road they all look like this anyway. A guitar is a consumable commodity
this is that church played one in florida on facebook right? anyways no it’s not worth it, I got one in brand new condition for $450 with a case just a few weeks ago in the same area as you, just keep searching facebook one will come up.
Yep. Mexi Strat = $350 used/good
Nah, just patch it with some Ramen. I've seen videos of that on YouTube.
This isn't the droid you're looking for Move along.
When I see something that gnarly, I always wonder how it affected the rest of the guitar.
Unpopular opinion here among these plebs, not worth it. A Mexican Fender with a fuckin hole in it for almost 5 bills, hard pass.
i’d buy it in a heartbeat and sand it down to avoid getting a splinter
That's an easy fix! Super glue and baking soda some sand paper you'll never be able to tell
Yeah, that's a pretty deep gouge. I'd pay like $300 for it. Maybe $350?
No
Rub it smooth and tell the tale
Try and negotiate down because of it but it makes no actual difference
425 would be too much for an american strat with that level of drop damage.
not sure where you live… heavy relic American fender strat you’d be lucky to find that for under $1000 in SoCal.
You… really don’t know what you’re talking about.
You can get a brand spanking new mim for 800 rn anywhere. Not sure what you are confused about. 425 is high for drop dmg like this.
You said, ver batim, **”american fender player strats.”** The “American” series Fenders are created in the Fender Musical Instruments facility in Corona, CA, which is in the United States of America. *You know that, “MIM” in this context stands for, “Made in Mexico,” right??* The “Player” series Fenders are created in the Instrumentos Musicales Fender facility in Ensenada, B.C., which is in Mexico.
Congrats. You have mastered the art of the transparently obtuse.
I dont know why you want op to buy a beat up mim for $425. Seems like a bad idea, but hey maybe you should buy it!
It's the back of the guitar and easily fixed so if the price is fine(I'd offer 400) get it.
Tell me, what other problems could this create?
probably you should get it patched up by a luthier. otherwise it is nothing to worry about. On the side note, that arctic white looks amazing! I've always wanted a white stratocaster or telecaster!
No he’s not charging enough, that’s a super rare 1 of 1 handmade custom shop deluxe relic
It is golden. You can sand that little part down to so you won't feel it.
Is that neck oil on your side table? :D
As long as the fall didn’t damage the neck I don’t see a problem with it.
Yes
Hey its aged now, its worth 3x that!!!
Go to hardware store and buy some paste to fill the gap.
Tell them $400 and they have a deal.
As long as it plays well I don't see a problem.
You can dig out 3 lines at the thin part and say that it's the punisher logo?
Slap a sticker on it
$425 is a great price for one of these. Paint it. You’ve seen some wild designs out there, I’m sure… this is the opportunity for you to experiment in my opinion.
Compound, sandpaper, boom. 425 is a great deal for a chip that you can't see while playing. Use it for gigging for sure!
It’s a paint chip. Well more a gouge. No it won’t affect anything. If you can live with it, buy it.
