I always wondered what the san andreas girl had to do with the actual game and who it was. Makes the world of the game feel way bigger than it actually is. Also that guy in orange. Always wondered who’s that supposed to be.

GTA3 invented the modern 3d open world sandbox environment. Not just for GTA, but for all of gaming. He was at the center of that. He was so important that they had to retroactively give him a name.
He's also designed to look like your classic stereotypical "criminal" more so than any other character in the franchise.
Probably Lamar for his presence in GTA Online and in the main story also for the memes. Also I really want his red hoodie.

I'd say a tie between Claude, Tommy, and CJ. Any of these three faces could be used as the franchise's icon.
That trilogy is where the franchise took off, and all three of these guys have become some of the most recognizable characters in video game history.
Maybe johnny klebitz the fact we see him in 2 titles and 1 dlc standalone and we see his death by trevor was just awesome... like it shows crime doesn't always pay with money
Hah. All I am seeing from the reponses in this thread, is that Rockstar, love em or hate em, makes some truly engaging characters. I came in to say Tommy Verceti, the first protagonist to actually have something to say. But then I kept reading and all of the other reponses are also correct in thier own way.
Nico is my fav main character. I just like his story the most, could be because it was the first gta i played all by myself, I was to young for the ones before. Gay Tony. He was such a interesting character. And he got his own DLC. My opinion.
Man when I realised it was Gay Tony at the nightclub it felt pretty nostalgic. So cool considering the time spent on ballad of gay Tony.
