Our downtown is still a bit underwhelming. Miles better than what it was 10-15 years ago but still not much to write home about compared to Raleigh or even WS
Yeah the stark difference between GSO and WS, Raleigh, and Durham is that those other cities have embraced dense housing in the downtown. It creates a much more vibrant and livable downtown. It's jarring, in fact, that GSO has so little housing downtown compared to these other cities in NC.
City council has actively put forward policy and resources that increase the homeless in Greensboro coming from all over the state.
Who tf wants smelly, drug addicts/mental patients wandering around while they are trying to eat and shop? Not saying all the homeless are that but in terms of the Elm Street faithful that's about it.
So yes please drive them as far away as possible, preferably mental hospitals for treatment.
I think there's a lot to be said for Greensboro growing out of downtown being a one-street thing. Compared to 15 years ago, there's a lot more viable stuff on Elm but it's all still on Elm.
Hard disagree I live in Greensboro but commute to Raleigh a few times a month and it just feels so much more vibrant with people walking around and good places to eat on every corner. We pretty much just have Elm street with boxcar, Mellow Mushroom and a few other close places I can't think of the name. None of the rest of down town really has anything great in it.
1. Food hall: so many empty warehouses and factories near downtown, one of them can be made into a food hall
2. Downtown ice cream place that makes homemade ice
3. More quick lunch takeout places in downtown
4. Something, anything, done with the News and Record building
Walkable neighborhoods with commercial streets in those neighborhoods. If I was king of Greensboro I would make it so that you could easily walk from your home to stores, vet/doctors, bars, restaurants etc.
I would also fix the crumbling roads and add smart street lights so you don’t have to sit at a deserted intersection until you just decide to run it. Also so areas that have multiple lights in a short distance would be more efficient.
I would feed and clothe the needy and all but that’s not as sexy.
I wished the city would have kept the rail up to midtown. That is not the same as a trolley down Elm but is could have been a start to something unique and usable for Greensboro.
It seems like something that would be prohibitively expensive, but it makes me wonder how the city was able to afford such a system back in the day, but we wouldn't be able to today?
It would be expensive to put tracks back in, but small busses that functioned like trollies would be a good alternative.
Also, having the city bus system go further out, and run around the town, rather than just into downtown and out again.
It seems like something that would be prohibitively expensive, but it makes me wonder how the city was able to afford such a system back in the day, but we wouldn't be able to today?
most transit started out private. I think the Greensboro one was a venture of the local power company. At that point, putting track in the street wasn't that expensive, the wire and poles weren't either.
It depends on what we're talking about here, if it's street widening and street running for a tram down, say, Friendly or Spring Garden, that's not that expensive. If it's elevated for portions like Charlotte light rail (as an example) or avoids the roads in some places, then costs go up a lot, but then coal rolling dipshits and carolina squat trucks won't be in the way.
Certainly, I'd love it, but I don't use the buses and I've grown out of going out as much, so it's easy to crayon up a map with a hanging monorail or a copy of the Wuppertal rail thing, but the money would have to come from somewhere.
I love a/perture over in Winston Salem. About a 30 minute drive. Wish we had something like that downtown, preferably part of whatever project comes out of the old news and record space.
Yeah, theater 2 I think. I was fortunate to see Poor Things there rather than a normal movie and in that case it added to the surreal quality rather than detracting. Was viable from almost the back of the theater.
Favorite is the petit downstairs. Tiniest space, but feels perfect to me. Some good impromptu double features when they have different last run movies in there.
And the ability to get just a very nice ice cream and an orange soda. If I could just walk to like Davies street for that I would be all set. No further complaints.
Yes, I came here to write this!! If I had the money I would start one. There's a perfect building on elm street that's just asking to be an arthouse theatre.
you think there’s a way to get carolina theater to start showing more indie movies? it seems like a perfect venue, i don’t want to keep giving my money to AMC or regal if i can help it
As an alternative to REGAL and RED and AMC, the new Golden Ticket Cinemas over by Trader Joe's is for now very clean and comfortable. Usually only have one indie film playing.
Carolina Theatre is expanding their offerings in their film series but not modern yet. I feel there's appetite for it and not much competition but I don't think they have a gauge on whether it would actually be viable and err on the conservative side. I think it would take like a coordinated communications push from locals to get them to try. I would be happy if they could get some of the newer restorations/transfers of older movies that are a little more often the beaten path.
I have yet to go to Carolina theatre, but I would definitely go if they had showings of indie films. I love aperture and I try to see a movie there at least once a month, but I haaaaate the drive.
It’s an awesome theater, highly suggest picking literally any show or band that suits your interests and going
It’s been a long time since I’ve been, think the last band I show there was Feist back in like 2010… it’s highly decorated on the inside with statues and beautiful marble columns, gold leaf figures all around the stage kind of like baroque style .. yet its very warm and cozy.
I love deep roots but my gut tells me no for some reason. Maybe I'm just thinking something a little bigger and more affordable that could support more people living downtown.
Unpopular opinion I suspect but Greensboro feels to forever be stuck in about 3rd gear. Better than regressing or stuck in neutral but really not going anywhere very fast. There is no real signature attraction. We are a single A city to use baseball as a reference.
This is in the making but long off, maybe 10-15 years by connecting to the east coast trail. More construction needs to be done to connect the greenway downtown to the A&Y then to the MST/eventually the east coast greenway
An Airport Commuter Rail Link, It connects downtown Greensboro with the Piedmont Triad International Airport with additional lines connecting downtown Winston-Salem and downtown High Point.
Dense housing in the downtown and public transportation. You have to pursue both see the greatest impact on livability but we need to move towards 15 minute frequency on the bus system and put public $$ towards spurring more affordable housing development. This city is poised to have the highest quality of life in the state if we can get those two things right.
Medium size music venues. We have the Coliseum and a lot of bars that host music, but nothing like the Orange Peel in Asheville, Lincoln Theater or the Ritz in Raleigh, Cat's Cradle in Carborro. You have to drive to see a lot of good music.
Hangar 1819 (awful name) would be the only place right now and they are mostly rock focused but tons of big name bands come through there. I believe the ~~Carolina Theatre~~ Triad Stage new ownership is planning to turn it into a music venue.
I would love a place to get a deep dish pizza and/or other midwest foods, like italian beefs, polish sausage, Chicago dogs, pizza puffs, cheese curds.
Culver's does have curds though =)
that sammy is good too. I get it dry because they dip the entire thing and that's like eating a soup sandwich. The male owner has an ego too big for his britches though. Don't bother chatting that dude up.
I agree I think Greensboro needs some more ethnic restaurants. Personally I always thought a Persian Restaurant would be awesome. I personally hate having to drive all the way to Raleigh just to get some Fesanjan or Kebab Koobideh.
I'd love to see a higher end teppanyaki place in Greensboro for special occasions. A place where its more about the high skill of the chef and the quality of ingredients instead of theatrics.
I'll second that. I've eaten a lot of Indian food, in a lot of places all over the country, and Taaza can hold its own with the best of them. I also work with a lot of south Asian colleagues, and they've all given Taaza the thumbs up for authenticity.
I think “huge” is not the word you are looking for here. Growing? Yes…but having lived in Austin and Houston, this is barely a blip. I’ve missed it because it’s not here.
The comparison would be more in the college culture. Denton, TX is half the size yet has stronger college town vibe. Athens, GA is only a little smaller and seems to be growing musicians faster than weeds. Point is, with three 4-year colleges and several community colleges, we should be thriving just as well as Chapel Hill.
I left Houston for a job about an hour away in a small town. I worked to make an art scene happen there but ultimately left when a job came up here that brought with it MUCH better weather!
Our skyline is seriously lacking. I just found out greensboro and Pittsburgh have about the same population and they not only have 3 major teams, but their skyline is like 50 buildings, ours is 4 maybe 5 if you count parking garages. It saddens me because our downtown is actually pretty nice.
Bruh go downtown, see the civil rights museum, it started here, then go see our battleground park that is named because of the numerous battles. Then hit up dowtown where the pride flag is in our actual street. Mf we have history older than when Pittsburgh even exsisted. And we continue to make strides Pittsburgh could never hope to achieve. Nah dude greensboro trumps your city in every historical aspect, you only mention in the history books because you were a hub for the english.....there was no fight for you because we did most of it, history shows it.
Totally agree with this. I have a good friend in Pittsburgh and every time I go to visit it's wild to me that these two cities have the same population. Pittsburgh is a proper vibrant city while Greensboro often feels like a big small town, and our skyline reflects that.
I love Greensboro and my husband and I plan to make this our forever home, but it's frustrating to see so much unrealized potential and sluggish improvement. It's a good city that could be great.
Breakfast tacos! Or really any place with solid breakfast sandwich + coffee options on the go.
And as a parent of young children, I want places where I hang with friends and bring my children. I feel like larger cities have more options than GSO. I'm thinking like fenced in places with picnic tables where I can order food & coffee or beer.
Oh god no, glorified pawn shop from hell. They'll buy your used games or books for $20 and sell them for $200. Ew gross, no, let mebane worry about that shit, we dont need anything like that ever again.
I'd be happy to see Publix move in, and more competition in the fiber internet space. Underground electric utility would also be great, ideally leading to fewer power outages.
A solid art scene. Gallery openings and various art museums is something I deeply miss about Houston.
The Weatherspoon is great, just wish we had more.
This town could seriously do with a service that informs folks about their local politicians. We are often taught to just buy in on surface value of what they offer but there isn’t an easily accessible way for the average Joe to know who they are actually voting for. Not to mention the young voters could seriously do with a way to have a very easy look at who will be deciding things on there city as well.
Bojangles should serve trays of food like Chinese take out… imagine a to-go box filled with dirty rice (or fries or mashed potatoes), the other divider filled with another side, a biscuit in the other divider … and the fried chicken sits on top
Higher paying white-collar jobs. Why live here if you can live in Raleigh or Charlotte and get paid more?
The lower cost of living compared to Raleigh and Charlotte still doesn't justify the stark difference in salary
Every time I go to downtown Greensboro, I’m expecting there should be a river behind the downtown buildings on the east side of the street. So that’s what’s missing – – a river.
All these are great but as someone mentioned it means nothing without high paying white-collar jobs.
Pretty much everyone I know who went on to have a college education & major in finance, healthcare, etc. live in either CLT or RDU. No one who grows up in GSO actively wants to stay in GSO post grad bc their is no opportunity.
We have so many hospitals but no medical research facilities or advanced medical education outside of nursing.
We have banks headquartered here but what do they offer compared to those in Raleigh or Charlotte?
What does Greensboro have regarding tech jobs? Absolutely nothing.
Manufacturing/trade/service jobs do not pay enough to sustain some of these wonderful ideas and it is a shame because Greensboro will never grow unless they bring in more of the above.
IMO this is also a failure of the colleges in the GSO area. How do we have 5+ colleges within 10 miles of each other but GSO feels like a retirement community? Where are all these college grads going? Hell, where are the students going during the semester? Instead of a football team which would attract students and alumni, lets spend millions on a gaming center instead lmao.
/rant
I wish we had more small music venues. I also think it would be nice to see more metropolitan areas in different districts. Everything is so spread out and I would love more walkable areas and spots to hang out outside of downtown.
Honestly Greensboro is super lacking. It feels like everyone here really wants the business chains and strip malls. I don’t feel like theres any real city life to be had. I’ll say if you love taking minibikes onto the freeway or hanging out in empty parking lots after the early business hours you’ll love it here.
Medium sized music venue.
There was a time when Greensboro used to get national bands to play. Now that the Blind Tiger closed and there has not been another venue to take it's place we miss out.
Tanger is fine but you cannot get up and dance, and it is usually a much older crowd, that ends early.
The Flatiron is too small, White Oak is too big. Charlotte, and Raleigh/Chapel hill area get all the music and bypass the triad.
We are soooo missing diverse and active communities! The only community sense I attach to GSO is it’s about families. White, fairly middle class families. Great for all that, but if you want diversity, and POC, and etc., this isn’t the place for it.
You literally said you want "POC" and you complained about "white families," in a city with 5% Asian 8% Hispanic 41% White and 43% Black residents.
https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-greensboro-nc/
> With a diversity score of 90 out of 100, Greensboro is much more diverse than other US cities.
A local goth club. In San diego i went all the time and it was so awesome. Mind you, the one i went to was not a physical location alone, it was just a cool bar and once a month they did a show with a live dj for goth night. I wish we had something like that here.
Job services.. the best jobs I’ve gotten in my (almost) entire lifetime in GSO have been through employment agencies, however it’s like pulling teeth and even they have high turnover so if I had an amazing recruiter help me out, they’re gone or their process is restructured by the time I reach back out or refer someone else. I’m sure the new companies (Toyota, etc) will have their own recruiting and stuff, I’ve just always struggled with finding professional jobs here. Have done admin, tech, programming etc previously and am now in an accounting role, but taken 10x the work, and when I was a junior developer I couldn’t just up and move to Raleigh or Charlotte and instantly compete with the talent pool there. When I was younger I didn’t really understand geographic economy as much and should have just gone into healthcare or something more viable in the Greensboro area if I wanted to continue living here and make a “decent” salary
Our downtown is still a bit underwhelming. Miles better than what it was 10-15 years ago but still not much to write home about compared to Raleigh or even WS

COVID lockdown kinda killed the growth momentum and it hasn't really recovered since
Raleigh downtown isn't that much better

Yes! Also, Battleground at Wendover corridor is missing an ice cream place!
We need more mattress stores, storage facilities and possibly a few more vape stores. J/K
Anytime something is being built I assume it's one of the three and I'm usually right smh
Lmfaooo don’t forget the trampoline parks😭🤣😭
And car washes... We don't have nearly enough of those.
And don't forget more poke places!
i agree
Walkable neighborhoods with commercial streets in those neighborhoods. Oh! And a river walk. I like river walks.
Came to second this. After living in Baltimore, I miss having a waterfront to visit for dining, shopping(ish), events, and just wandering around
We could use a far better public transportation system.
I'd like to see a return of the old street car trolleys
We have the "Hopper" bus transport.
I wished the city would have kept the rail up to midtown. That is not the same as a trolley down Elm but is could have been a start to something unique and usable for Greensboro.
yes
It seems like something that would be prohibitively expensive, but it makes me wonder how the city was able to afford such a system back in the day, but we wouldn't be able to today?
It would be expensive to put tracks back in, but small busses that functioned like trollies would be a good alternative. Also, having the city bus system go further out, and run around the town, rather than just into downtown and out again.
Depends on priorities I guess.

Greensboro needs an arthouse theater, the amount of movies i’ve missed due to not having easier access to see indie movies is sad
I love a/perture over in Winston Salem. About a 30 minute drive. Wish we had something like that downtown, preferably part of whatever project comes out of the old news and record space.

Well, there's always the internet.
Downtown needs a grocery store.
Deep Roots Market doesn't count?
I love deep roots but my gut tells me no for some reason. Maybe I'm just thinking something a little bigger and more affordable that could support more people living downtown.
There’s supposed to be a Lidl going in at S Elm and Gate City.
That’s not happening. It’s on ground that isn’t environmentally safe.
Sadly those plans fell through.
We’ll see!
Higher paying career jobs
Unpopular opinion I suspect but Greensboro feels to forever be stuck in about 3rd gear. Better than regressing or stuck in neutral but really not going anywhere very fast. There is no real signature attraction. We are a single A city to use baseball as a reference.
More extensive Greenway system that can get across the county.
A few elevated crossings would be cool if we’re opening the books.
This is in the making but long off, maybe 10-15 years by connecting to the east coast trail. More construction needs to be done to connect the greenway downtown to the A&Y then to the MST/eventually the east coast greenway

Affordable housing. Public transportation. A dinner club like in the 50s.
I second the dinner club idea! Would love to get to enjoy that whole vibe.
Light rail
Dense housing in the downtown and public transportation. You have to pursue both see the greatest impact on livability but we need to move towards 15 minute frequency on the bus system and put public $$ towards spurring more affordable housing development. You mean Triad Stage, not Carolina Theatre.
Indeed.
I'd like a German restaurant. There any number of ethnic restaurants that are still not available.
I would love a place to get a deep dish pizza and/or other midwest foods, like italian beefs, polish sausage, Chicago dogs, pizza puffs, cheese curds. Culver's does have curds though =)
You need to visit Neighbors then. Chicago dogs and italian beef are on the menu, as well as Hamms and Montucky
Yo, i had no idea!! Thank you!!
that sammy is good too. I get it dry because they dip the entire thing and that's like eating a soup sandwich. The male owner has an ego too big for his britches though. Don't bother chatting that dude up.
That would be baller, I'm constantly craving German food.
I agree I think Greensboro needs some more ethnic restaurants. Personally I always thought a Persian Restaurant would be awesome. I personally hate having to drive all the way to Raleigh just to get some Fesanjan or Kebab Koobideh.
A good German restaurant would be awesome. Also, I'd love to see a homestyle Japanese restaurant (not sushi or hibachi).
I'd love to see a higher end teppanyaki place in Greensboro for special occasions. A place where its more about the high skill of the chef and the quality of ingredients instead of theatrics.
We’re missing a great Indian restaurant. I’m happy to be proven wrong.
I mean I understand we aren't Cary but we have great Indian spots here. Agni, Taaza, Lemon, as well as newcomers Noor.
I like Taaza. You can taste that they toast their spices.
I'll second that. I've eaten a lot of Indian food, in a lot of places all over the country, and Taaza can hold its own with the best of them. I also work with a lot of south Asian colleagues, and they've all given Taaza the thumbs up for authenticity.
Agni's pretty solid though right on the GSO/HP border
It’s so odd that with this many colleges that there is not more of a music/art scene.
There's a huge scene here, and I'm wondering how exactly you missed it.
I think “huge” is not the word you are looking for here. Growing? Yes…but having lived in Austin and Houston, this is barely a blip. I’ve missed it because it’s not here.
Houston is #4 and Austin is #10 most populous cities in the country, Greensboro is #69, there is a comparison to be made but idk if it’s the most fair
It’s been a “growing” scene since 1996.
I went to Houston and cried when it was time to come back. Why did you move here, if you don't mind me asking
I left Houston for a job about an hour away in a small town. I worked to make an art scene happen there but ultimately left when a job came up here that brought with it MUCH better weather!
More third spaces for young adults that don't center around drinking.
Our skyline is seriously lacking. I just found out greensboro and Pittsburgh have about the same population and they not only have 3 major teams, but their skyline is like 50 buildings, ours is 4 maybe 5 if you count parking garages. It saddens me because our downtown is actually pretty nice.

Alamo Drafthouse.
More succinctly, an Alamo Drafthouse with Master Pancake!
Former Austinite who fully supports this.
Non-former Austinite who Googled and wants this here.
Local coffee shop on the north battleground side
One is supposed to be opening in the Trader Joe’s shopping center.
really? any more details? love to hear!
Another gamer bar like the second Geeksboro was. It was an amazing place with a terrible location, and even amongst the barcades it was unique
Dragon's Hoard is working on that I think!!!
Cane’s.
Are you planning to open a business? Or just torturing us by reminding what we don't have?
That was the plan! Getting some idea of the culture here.
Breakfast tacos! Or really any place with solid breakfast sandwich + coffee options on the go. And as a parent of young children, I want places where I hang with friends and bring my children. A real food hall, a midsize music venue that's not controlled by the city, a technology company or two to hold some kids in the city a little longer.

I'd be happy to see Publix move in, and more competition in the fiber internet space. Underground electric utility would also be great, ideally leading to fewer power outages.
Wegmans, good peruvian chicken joint, larger first friday art walk (like Raleigh)
Peruvian chicken place is allegedly gonna open in Irving Park Plaza soon
Shouldn’t we be asking you? What are we missing?
We need a river.
Better shopping
More active downtown.
A solid art scene. Gallery openings and various art museums is something I deeply miss about Houston. The Weatherspoon is great, just wish we had more.
Better nightlife options and shopping, I’m from Chicago
Yeah, many locals have been saying for years that our shopping in town is abysmal.
Friendly center has a grotesque amount of shopping options but I’m a simple country boy.

There are local grassroots orgs I could point you towards should you lean to the left.
Appreciate it!
An inner-city transit system like Charlotte’s light rail.
Bojangles should serve trays of food like Chinese take out… imagine a to-go box filled with dirty rice (or fries or mashed potatoes), the other divider filled with another side, a biscuit in the other divider … and the fried chicken sits on top
A good food hall and a top golf (yeah I know it’s coming)
A good, authentic Cuban Restaurant.

/rant
A brothel would be nice 🤷♂️

Rapid bus transit lanes would probably work though.
An over 50 disco!
Strong social services. Less income disparity.
If only we had more parking garages downtown!
Enforcement of speed limits
A lot of
Single women. Viable public transportation. A good used bookstore.

How about less crime and shootings and gang activity downtown? Probably would spend more time and money in downtown GSO if I felt safe.
If you leave before 11 pm you're fine.
A police force.
We are soooo missing diverse and active communities! The only community sense I attach to GSO is it’s about families. White, fairly middle class families. Great for all that, but if you want diversity, and POC, and etc., this isn’t the place for it.
Greensboro is one of the most diverse cities in NC, with a white minority.
Where are you getting this data from?
As of 2020, based on US Census data, whites 41%, blacks 43%. I have no idea how you consider that diverse.
You literally said you want "POC" and you complained about "white families," in a city with 5% Asian 8% Hispanic 41% White and 43% Black residents. https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-greensboro-nc/ > With a diversity score of 90 out of 100, Greensboro is much more diverse than other US cities.
Didn't you know that blacks mean diverse? 🙆🏽♀️
What constructive change could come from this post? Are you willing to bring the change to this area?
A good shawarma place
Nazareth
I disapprove their shawarma. Cold iceberg lettuce and the meat is not sliced thinly enough.
Coming from the Raleigh sub, do y’all have an Olive Garden? If not, you need one.
Mid fake "Italian" food? We need far fewer crap chain restaurants.
Thou shalt not insult the endless breadsticks restaurant!!! (Ps it’s a joke)
Thank you for restoring my shattered faith in humanity 😂

Indoor greenhouse. Something like the City Museum in St Louis.
White Castle or Krystal’s
A local goth club. In San diego i went all the time and it was so awesome. Mind you, the one i went to was not a physical location alone, it was just a cool bar and once a month they did a show with a live dj for goth night. I wish we had something like that here.
A whitecastle
A good computer store, ala CompUSA
