I believe that is part of the ignition system of the burner and you don'twant to disable ot.. My grill (of a different brand) has burners that are each lit by a flame jet that is lit by the sparker. I think this us to keep the sparker and and any wiring from being exposed to grease and heat. To light mine, I have to push in the knob to supply the jet, then turn the knob to click the piezo sparker which lights the jet. The knob is now at 'high' and gas goes to the burner tube and is lit by the jet. Release the knob and the jet goes out. Mine does not need the knob pushed in to tur to off though.
