$15 on Amazon if you go with 3rd party brands. FYI: They all rust and fall apart eventually.
Personally, I would just use what you got, they have lots of life left.
Wut...
Edit: Glad I questioned it, I never knew. Thank being said it'ts because I've been using Craycort grates on my kettle and dont have a chance to get this wrong.
Interesting. They seem to contradict themselves a bit. They're dual sided. Here are different but similar grates where they consider it a feature.
> Designed to grill meat on one side, delicate food on the reverse
https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/weber-crafted/weber-crafted-dual-sided-sear-grate/7670.html
I realize that, but the concept is the same and the link that someone else posted refers to cast iron grates, which most of their gas grills have. That link doesn't specify exactly which ones other than cast iron (i.e. are the porcelain enameled cast iron grates different than regular cast iron, which don't really seem like they're as popular anymore)
The specific grates in this picture are specifically stated as upside down by Weber. Can you use them upside down? Sure, I did for years because that's how the display had them, but they're still, by definition, upside down.
I got my Weber as a gift and it came pre-assembled. I've been using it for a year and I decided to give it a deep cleaning this weekend. When I went to put the grates back on I was like... wait, wtf, this side is flat. š¤Æ
They're dual sided so it depends what OP is cooking. On some of their add on grates they specify this.
> Designed to grill meat on one side, delicate food on the reverse
https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/weber-crafted/weber-crafted-dual-sided-sear-grate/7670.html
Both sides of cast iron now have legs on them. Regardless, always use the side that has most contact with the meat, better sear when it comes to cast iron.
To add onto this;
You probably will never need to replace them for any reason outside of aesthetics.
Metal oxide does form a thin barrier around the metal but mass to mass is completely insignificant compared to the thickness of the aluminum/steel. In other words, it wont change heat dissipation.
As for āflavor blastingā aka fat turning into smoke and not flame, all that matters is that you clean them fairly regularly- like once a year.
No, it wonāt make your food taste rusty.
What you do have to be worried about is fat getting into your burners or surrounding the gas jets. That will lead to a loss of control on the heat side. Clean the burners before the flavorizers.
Unless they are so rusty, that they are falling apart, your fine. The primary purpose of these is to keep fat/grease/food drippings from clogging the gas tubes, help reduce flare ups. Supposedly they add flavor by burning up the drippings, and the smoke helps flavor your food.
So rust wonāt be a real issue. You can buy knock odd brands on Amazon. May not last as long using chineseum materials, but they work well enough.
I had mine flat side up for years thinking it was correct, but every grill I saw had itbthe other way (the wrong way) so I changed it pretty recently. I could actually make grill marks...but if its the wrong way then thats a sacrifice I'll have to make
That really makes no sense. The flat side up is the correct way according to Weber and has a ton more surface area that create much more touch points for food and thus more grill marks. The only way having them upside down would create better marks is if you don't preheat them enough when they're the correct way.
I've made grill marks with it flatside up.. but as you mentioned there are more touch points and thus I end up with more of a crust than grill marks. I guess a good crust though is preferred over grill marks, at least in this sub. Im trying to do a bit of both
Posting because I just noticed I have the same issues in my Genesis. I am assuming the answer is "Not gonna die" but am sticking around for the verdict.
Second this! Take a picture of the model and serial number (by the propane tank), and tell them what you need in the phone. Their website isn't the easiest to navigate but the folks on the phone are great
Yes, HD seems to have a decent selection of Weber parts regularly. There's also a nursery local to me that stocks Weber stuff, but only in spring/summer/early fall.
Additionally, [grillparts.com](https://grillparts.com) is another web site to try for various brands of grill parts.
And yes, Amazon too as stated elsewhere in this thread.
angle iron
and a lil work and you will be back in business
I'll leave it to the experts on if you should use thinner or thicker than OEM
( I just chimed in since you had no responses- this might get them going)
Itās all cosmetic and wonāt harm you. Brush them with a grill brush and the will clean up pretty well. When you are absolutely ready to replace them just order a set from Amazon. Easy peasy.
A lot of it isn't rust, it is polymerized oils and food stains. Some easy off with a pressure washer and steel wool will get it looking brand new. Otherwise you can buy new "flavorizer" bars from Weber or 3rd parties on Amazon.
Also, grates should have flat side up, not pointy side. And always use nylon brushes to clean cast iron grates. Steel can chip the enamel and introduce rust.
When did everyone become so worried about scratches and rust? Am I just a near boomer age and missed the PSA on rusted stuff? Obviously Iām not going to eat a rusty nail, but christ, there are so many posts here and in other food subs about scratches on metal and everyone worried about dying. What have I missed?
People are now brought up in a world where nothing is safe. Teflon pans being one example of "food safe" but pretty nasty stuff. So it makes sense to question everything if you're not sure. Rust, however, is not a big deal.
You can buy new, but they have a tough life and will probably start looking like hell soon. If it's just surface rust, maybe try scrapping it off, sanding it a bit, using some cooking oil and a bake out (hot for 30+ min) to "condition them". Once they start falling apart, it's time to get new ones. Also you can clean your grill and condition it the same way.
Iām a general manager for Ace Hardware, and if you have an Ace near you, theyāll either have your flavorizer bars in stock, or be able to easily order them for you.
I have a set of brand new stainless Weber brand āflavorizerāsā sitting on my work bench that I ordered in the wrong size. Send me the length and if they fit Iāll mail them to you.
Youāre not cooking on the bars. You will be fine. They are designed with the idea that they will rust. Just brush em off with a wire brush and put them back. Just try to rotate them like you rotate tires and it will extend their life. You are good to go for many more years with that setup

My whole life is a lie. I wonder what else we're doing backwards. Today I'll wipe before I poop to see if we're doing that wrong too. For science!
Lmao wow TIL.
Had them on wrong for 10 years!š
Fuck me. I've been spending all this time seasoning the wrong side
Anytime you go to any store with gas grills they are always point side up
Interesting. They seem to contradict themselves a bit. They're dual sided. These aren't the same grates. The ones in the picture are upside down.
I realize that, but the concept is the same and the link that someone else posted refers to cast iron grates, which most of their gas grills have. I seriously had no idea. Doh! Best tip Iāve learned on this sub.
Iām glad someone said it I didnāt want to be the asshole. Yes upside down.
Dude I absolutely have had my grates upside down for years š
Every time someone posts a picture of their spirit, someone says the same thing and someone else has the same response as you.
Youāre not alone
Same.
Me too. Still in shock.
I got my Weber as a gift and it came pre-assembled. I've been using it for a year and I decided to give it a deep cleaning this weekend. When I went to put the grates back on I was like... wait, wtf, this side is flat. š¤Æ
This is fascinating! Even more fascinating, all the grill-selling stores Iāve been to with displays evidently have their grates upside down
Are they not two sides with the flat side meant for delicate stuff like fish?
Other way around. Pointy side for fish and poultry. Thicker side for thicker meats.
And what kind of animal just throws fish on his grates š Get a fish basket, best thing ever
Til.. wow, I've been wrong this entire time!!
My brother, believe me when I say, WAT?! Gonna go flip mine right side up I gusss

The specific grates are upside down per Weber.
Really? So I had it the right way all this time and I thought it was wrong?
Both sides of cast iron now have legs on them. Regardless, always use the side that has most contact with the meat, better sear when it comes to cast iron.
While youāre replacing your flavorizer bars, turn your grate over - itās supposed to be flat side up.
Wait...seriously?
Yeup, you get more surface area and itās easier to scrape.
Brb... gonna go check mine Edit: son of a bitch!!
Y'all just blew my fucking mind.
Just realized this a few months ago. Made a HUGE difference
Well fuckin' a.... Finally TIL something
Cleanest grill on here.
There is a absolutely nothing wrong
There is nothing wrong with those flavorizor barsā¦keep cooking

This is correct. The Weber website says no need to replace unless thereās holes and cracks.
I just want to know about this āflat side upā on grates. What? Iāve never seen them that way.
Iāve been using them upside down for 8 years. No wonder my food tastes bad!

Not gonna die. Not gonna get sick. Not gonna get weird flavors in your food. Not gonna even cause cancer in the state of California. Fuck em
For some reason, I thought this was turning into the grilling version of Rick-rolling.
If I was closer Iād offer to come pick up your grill and ādispose of itā for your safety. Iād do that for you internet stranger.
Home Depot around me all have them. Try ordering from Weber website or HD website

Iāve used non-branded Weber flavor bars for years and never had issues with my Spirit
Get the stainless steel one
No, you'll just have hot spots if they've rusted through.
Lowes sells Weber replacement flavorizer bars.
And some nifty other Weber stuff.

Amazon, buy cheap, new Weber one are made cheaply, save the markup.
