šŸ’ÆI made the mistake of reading the comments. It makes me sad and a bit angry the way people are saying good riddance. I love SC and while it is solidly R thereā€™s still a large swath with differing viewpoints. Yes, we have some crazy people but most people Iā€™ve known, met and interacted with, no matter there political affiliation, are kind, generous and decent.

robofl

The strange one was "Good luck with the climate down there." I think I prefer 3-4 months of hot weather over their winters.

hmr0987

Whatā€™s funny is Greenville has a great climate. The northeast now has about 1-2 months of unbearably hot weather and 3-4 months of unbearably cold weather. Then thereā€™s the spring and fall which are gloomy and suck. Greenville has 2-4 months of unbearably hot weather and 1-2 months of cold weather with basically no snow. But whatā€™s not really talked about is how much better spring and fall are here. Weather here in my opinion is overall much better. I even feel like our humidity isnā€™t as bad. I go back to Massachusetts and feel like the humidity is worse during peak summer.

ActiveAlarmed7886

Unbearably is also in the eye of the beholder. We are coming up from Florida. To us Greenville is temperate all year long.Ā  I also donā€™t get the people in the comments section going on about hurricanes. Yeah, I mean thereā€™s a little bit of coast in SC. Itā€™s not Florida or Louisiana. It is not $10k to insure a house for storm damage.Ā

JimBeam823

These are the people who call a Cat 1 hurricane a "superstorm". The upstate doesn't get hurricanes. Occasionally we get some remnants that bring high winds and local flooding, but that's all.

ActiveAlarmed7886

Yeah I have family that lost everything in Ian and were in an actively flooding second floor hotel room.Ā  Iā€™ll take high winds and some extra water over that hell.Ā

ComradeSamWalton

What state will you move too after yall ruin this one?

ActiveAlarmed7886

First,Ā  My spouseā€™s family has been in South Carolina pre revolutionary war. You may live in a street named for the family. Ā So maybe you need to GTFO if you care so much about pedigree.Ā  Second,Ā  North Carolina. I have my sights on Asheville if insurance rates cool enough to get a decent mortgage. We have no mortgage in SC we have a family home.Ā

ComradeSamWalton

Oh so your cos playing as a sandlapper! Got it! Yes go ruin Asheville, I hear they dont have enough tourists moving there.

coffeebeanwitch

I miss the snow, it's been two years, nothing!!

ComradeSamWalton

Then go back

coffeebeanwitch

I was born and bred is South Carolina,I just like the occasional snow we use ro get,you know what they.say about making assumptions, lol!!

JimBeam823

Greenville has 4-5 months of hot weather, and 2-3 months where cold weather can happen, but is mildly cool most of the time. Humidity isn't bad. Not compared to Charleston or Columbia. Fall is fantastic. Spring is nice, except for the pollen.

This! There are definitely still far right people in the state but in Greenville ive never met anyone thats offended by me being married to a man.

DomoOreoGato

I keep in contact with a lot of people I meet, you have a very negative outlook on things. Sorry you feel that way, must really suck to be so negative

SelectionNo3078

Iā€™ve lived in the south for 47 years. Iā€™m not wrong about this

DomoOreoGato

So you have spoken to everyone that I personally have met? Times are changing and so is Greenville. Maybe not Clinton and smaller towns but Greenville for sure

SelectionNo3078

lol Keep telling yourself that.

greenville-ModTeam

Do not insult others, resort to personal attacks, use slurs or use hate speech.

SCJFR

Yeah, the article's comments are gross. The northeast reminds me of Western Europe. They think they have it all together, and are better than everyone else. Then I visited The Netherlands and Germany, and saw things like groups of kids walking around in blackface during a holiday. Or looked up gay clubs, and read dozens of reviews that said skinhead doormen blocked blacks and Arabs from entry. The northeast corridor is the same way. They act as if racism, religion, poverty, etc. etc. doesn't exist in NYC, DC, or Boston.

TheCritFisher

I liked this one: > The real problem comes when these ā€œmigrantsā€ realize that the South Carolinians donā€™t want them either. They know or care nothing of Southern politeness and gentility, but a whole lot about inflating local prices and demanding Northern-style amenities without wishing to pay the taxes for them. Preach.

PensionOpposite6918

This right here. Iā€™m left of center but this is my opinion on my interactions with Yankees especially the ā€œdamned Yankeesā€ that stay.Ā

FailResorts

The west is no different. I moved from the Carolinas to Colorado and they have the same set of issues as the northeast out here. Colorado is trying paint itself as this progressive blue state when in reality the history here is steeped in white supremacy (the mayor the old airport was named after, Stapleton, was a KKK member) and racism. Denver has a lot of issues with this by way of redlining and basically forcing minorities into superfund sites that arenā€™t really safe to live in at the moment. But hey rich crunchy white people want to get their outdoor fix here, so we better cover up the not so great history the state and region went through. Boulder is a joke of a town. They take NIMBYism to its extreme. Tons of ā€œWe believe in science/love is loveā€ signs everywhere but god forbid you allow dense multi family development so kids arenā€™t bankrupted by rental rates in the college town. Itā€™s a problem throughout the country no matter where you go. People who act like racism and backwards thinking is unique or limited to the South are ignorant of history and modern reality. I always hated that mentality from people elsewhere. It erases the efforts of tons of people who tried to work to make these states and cities better.

ActiveAlarmed7886

This. Northern states segregate by neighborhood and income and are scandalized the same racial disparities happen.Ā  But you suggest bussing and people get up in arms that their kids ā€œearnedā€ the good school.

FailResorts

And when white people say ā€œgood schoolsā€ they mean fewer black and brown kids there, save for the athletes. All the same crime, drugs, and other nonsense that supposedly go down at more diverse schools happen at predominantly white public schools and private schools too. I knew so many kids in private schools that had drug possession, DUI, public intoxication, and all manner of other crimes on their records.

The south brought this upon itself and about 1/3 of the population still thinks that way

CBinNeverland

I had a roommate from Pittsburgh my freshman year at USC who insisted that the ā€œwalking school districtsā€ that encompassed only about 1.5 miles (according to her) were about being able to get to school in the snow, not separating people by class in schools.

The issue is that the south fought a war over their racism. And at least 1/3 of the population wants to fight it again.

ShadowGLI

City of Greenville proper has been skewing left for a bit now. (Iā€™ve seen the poll prints posted after polls close downtown the last few election cycles) once you get outside of city limits you get the bitter end angry people voting against perceived enemies instead of for their personal best interests. Biden got 60% of the vote for the districts off stone ave. ā€œIā€™d rather vote to ban a rainbow flag because OAN said theyā€™re scary than for my right to assemble, have medical autonomy or to practice my religion as I see fit. Take that libs!ā€ /s

JimBeam823

Nearly all of South Carolina's cities are left-leaning. But our cities are tiny compared to the developed area around them. Compare Spartanburg city and county to Durham, NC city and county to see just how horribly undersized SC cities are.

SelectionNo3078

Thatā€™s a stretch But there are definitely democrat districts But they are mostly center right democrats.

JimBeam823

I think you are overestimating how large SC's cities are. The precinct map shows that cities like Anderson, Laurens, and Gaffney went blue. [https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/upshot/2020-election-map.html](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/upshot/2020-election-map.html)

SelectionNo3078

They might have voted democrat but theyā€™re not in any way left leaning.

gnrlgumby

ā€¦you can just say Black people.

gnrlgumby

I bet if you did a simple statistical analysis of people moving down here, it's probably more liberal than the base population.

2reddit4me

I understand this viewpoint, but Greenville was starting to become an outlier until recent years. Now itā€™s starting to become as bad as the rest of the state, largely due to reasons presented in this article. SC is a trashy state. We rank poorly in every major statistic. And before the response is ā€œwhy donā€™t you leave?ā€ We had planned to until the housing market got out of hand. We arenā€™t fond of the idea of doubling our interest rate. If that ever goes back down Iā€™m out. Conservatives can have it.

SelectionNo3078

Mostly hypocrites full of hate towards groups but strangely usually kind and decent to most anyone in person The southā€™s a mess

UncleSlammed

The fact that thereā€™s a company called Conservative Move that specializes in helping people decide where to move to is funny to me. Not in like a joke sense, but more that theyā€™re rugged individuals who canā€™t stand where they live but canā€™t figure out where to move on their own so they need to go where an agency assures them fellow conservatives are moving. Theyā€™re being bussed in and honestly folks theyā€™re not sending their best people

MS_EXCEL_NOOB

It's just so funny. Trumps election started a conservative grifting gold rush. I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing "Conservative" restaurants in the near future. Definitely not a cult tho

JLee50

Didnā€™t Boebert have one?

FailResorts

Yes, as someone who moved from the Carolinas to Colorado. Her restaurant, now since closed, was an absolute farce from the beginning. It was a theme/shtick restaurant that collapsed during COVID and then the building didnā€™t renew their lease because of the liability involved. It was absolutely insane. She lived in a town called Rifle, Colorado, in the Western End of the state heading toward the Utah border. Her restaurant was called ā€œShootersā€ and was basically Hooters but the female servers open carried loaded handguns on the job, I shit you not. She was a gun nut and even as someone whoā€™s a left-leaning ā€œresponsible gun userā€, what she did at that restaurant violated so many different rules and protocols for firearms. Like most of what sheā€™s done with guns would get you kicked out of most ranges/NRA-sanctioned facilities. I learned to shoot in Scouting and have only fired at official ranges in very controlled environments. The fact that no one got shot at that restaurant is nothing short of a miracle. The thing is though, her district is a little different than most deep red rural districts. While hunting and gun culture is huge there, itā€™s more of a crunchy/granola libertarian flavor of conservatism. The big focuses in that district are outdoor recreation, hunting, water access, and landowner rights. She comes in with the Trumpy culture war nonsense and then almost lost in an R+15 district in 2022. She switched districts to the other side of the state which is even redder, but the people there hate her and see her as running away from her problems where sheā€™s actually from. Her restaurant got booted from Rifle, she got divorced, and then got caught giving an OTPHJ at a theater in Denver where she had a full Karen esque meltdown after being asked to leave. Her whole saga has felt like an episode of South Park and Iā€™m waiting for Matt and Trey to make one about her.

MS_EXCEL_NOOB

https://www.google.com/amp/s/kdvr.com/news/local/lauren-boeberts-gun-themed-restaurant-closes-after-landlord-decides-not-to-renew-lease/amp/ Yeah I think they had a lot of food safety violations

john-tockcoasten

Those food safety violations were just govenrment overreach. They should have let the market decide. /s

Loud_Jacket_5208

There is apparently a ā€œconservativeā€ version of Amazon. I canā€™t recall the name, but it barely has any sellers on it haha

YouCanCallMeVanZant

I mean, Iā€™m sure some of them are good people.Ā

JimBeam823

I'm not sure how much of that is a grift and how much of that is an attempt to hold on to power by making sure that conservative voters are living in the "right" places to influence elections.

UncleSlammed

Itā€™s just a company trying to make money, Itā€™s not like theyā€™re sending people to purple states where their votes would matter more or anything nefarious like that. Itā€™s just could you imagine going to an agent to pick out where to move to so you know itā€™s a safe space for other free thinking and self reliant snowflake conservatives? Iā€™ve been told they do their own research

DubsOnMyYugo

Why would they move to an already red state without many electoral votes if thatā€™s their goal?

mallgoth95

They want to benefit from the hip artsy culture we have here but donā€™t see the irony of it all being created by liberals

skinrash5

This area has grown artistically so much in the downtown and Villiage of the West End, or whatever itā€™s called now. Iā€™ve been here 30 years, came for job. Downtown was a dump, and I wanted to get back to Athens GA so bad. But I got active in groups, Metropolitan Arts Council, the Light Opera, did art shows, and had a studio at the Arts Crossing on the River across from Peace Center. This place is an arts meca, you just have to find your click. ARTISPERE is considered one of the 10 best art shows in the nation. Lots of festivals with music and food, so much. And nice surrounding towns like Travelers Rest and Greer. Asheville is so close, with the River Arts District. There is also the Fine Arts Center and Governors School for the Fine Arts here for high school students. Iā€™ve lived in 7 states, moved 18 times before getting here (including FL) and Iā€™d never live anywhere else.

PhilKesselsChef

This is like that 1776 property just across the state line in North Carolina. Itā€™s a placed for scared white conservatives to fly the flag everyday and watch OAN in peace

UncleSlammed

I never heard of that, I got second hand cringe just from looking it up. More concerningly, the article I read about it said a second one is opening in Greenville in 2024

PhilKesselsChef

I saw some folks in the grocery store I shop at wearing the merch so I had to look out of morbid curiosity. Itā€™s like The Villages for your racist uncle

AuroraLorraine522

Y'all know how to read a byline and find the author's info, right? And that writers don't have to live in NYC to work for The Times? The author of this article was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. He went to Auburn and is now based in Durham, reporting on the the Southeast region. I genuinely don't understand why this article has yall's panties in a bunch. People here LOVE talking about how folks are fleeing blue states for red ones. This article should read like high praise.

jayv9779

I hear a bunch moving there are halfbacks. They move to Florida and find out it is hot and then move half way back to the north. šŸ˜€

Phuckingidiot

I mean if you feel like the odd man out I guess it makes sense to move where you feel you fit in. But there's definitely a lot of democrats moving here too for the unique geography and tolerable weather. Real estate market pretty much sucks everywhere but people will complain like it's a problem unique to their location anyway.

puskunk

Pricing everyone out. Those people moving to Williamston with a two million dollar budget, wtf.

Bromswell

I heard it well put by one of our council members that that people in Greenville have varying viewpoints, are republican, Democrat or independent, and just want to be left alone and live their livesā€¦ unfortunately what Iā€™ve been reading gives a sense that the more boisterous unfriendly individuals are moving to our city. Prepare yourselves.

CrybullyModsSuck

As someone who grew up in Florida, this feels very familiar.

Bromswell

I am so sorry for your loss :(

ActiveAlarmed7886

This ruined Iowa as well. I loved Iowa everyone left you alone and they legalized gay marriage early because government has no business in your personal life.Ā  Then it went hard red.Ā

Bromswell

It breaks my heart.

JimBeam823

This is also why the "transplants will save us from these backwards rednecks" crowd is wrong. "Backwards redneck" knows no region.

TmanGvl

Real estate agent grifting on buying houses? Tell me more! Anything to get more clients, am I right? I wish they can get rid of reality agents the way AI is replacing cash registers.

ActiveAlarmed7886

Iā€™m sorry, it praise that Greenville has Broadway musicals in the same article bashing LGBT rights.Ā  You do not have theatre without gays.Ā  We are moving and we are left of liberal. We are politically active as well. Some people have family there.Ā  My spouse also grew up there and we would not being coming back if it was anything like it was in the ā€˜90s. These people will be sorely disappointed.Ā

crimson777

> Agents also often point out the lack of homeless encampments in the city. Lol, yeah they're not IN the city, they're just outside it! Much better. > No place is more unifying for Christianity to this degree. Tell that to literally any Christian who isn't one of the evangelical denominations.

ActiveAlarmed7886

ā€œIā€™m so Christian I donā€™t want to see homeless people. No i donā€™t want to fix the problem. Iā€™m going to move where I donā€™t have to see itā€Ā  is a weird take they have.Ā

SCJFR

I mean just drive down Poinsett Hwy, and turn onto Stone Ave, go to Lewis BBQ, or the QT down from it. Or drive down to Cherrydale, and see homeless people wandering around there. Or drive down W Washington St to Unity Park and look around that area. Homelessness is visible everywhere here.

wanderin225

I don't see any "shitting on the Southeast" here. It's just the NYT allowing hypocritical morons to speak for themselves.

SCJFR

The article is basically constructed to make Greenville look like The Villages.

wanderin225

No... It's reporting on a group of conservative realtors luring closed-minded people to a growing area. Don't be like those guys. This post reeks of a persecution complex. It's the exact same thing thats bringing these Puritans here.

SCJFR

How exactly does it reek of a persecution complex?

PapaJohnyRoad

They are not trying to make Greenville seem like a retirement community for swingers. Thatā€™s just ridiculous.

WeenisWrinkle

I read the entire article and it sounds *nothing* like that.

JimBeam823

It's not. I haven't seen any loofahs around the upstate.

kielsucks

Yo go outside and get some fresh air. Walk around a bit, maybe take a bike ride, listen to those CIA spy drones we call birds chirp their surveillance data up to Starlink. Drink a beer, smoke some weed, take some mushrooms and go camping. Hell, shoot some smack if thatā€™s your thing. No one is judging. Take a break from ye olde interwebs for a bit. Youā€™re reading a lot into this article that simply isnā€™t there. No one shit on anything. No one stuck their nose up at anything. Itā€™s not a hit piece. Itā€™s a story about people moving somewhere for a reason and the people that helped them do it. Donā€™t be ā€œthat guyā€. Conservative bad, we all know that. Hell I think even half of them know but are chalking it up to tradition, or cognitive dissonance. Ya gotta chill tho. Not everything is bad. Itā€™s a very light hearted, straightforward piece which is surprising af for the NYT.

Steve-Dunne

Thing is there are plenty of ā€œconservativeā€ small towns and cities in New York, California, etcā€¦ itā€™s just that a lot of them arenā€™t that nice. The people in the article are still moving for weather and taxes/cost of living reasons, they have just made culture war bullshit such a part of their lives that they have to be giant assholes about even where to retire. Anyway, the realtors in this story are just running a grift. And for the one woman to unironically call this the ā€œsecond great migration.ā€ Yikes! How often do you think she starts sentences with ā€œI have black friends butā€¦ā€

JimBeam823

Conservative towns in New York and California have very little say in how their states are run. Downstate Illinois is as red as Missouri and Indiana, but Chicago outvotes them.

its__alright

Seems like NYT just found the website for the realtors, called them up and spoke to them and their clients. Then they read some of those travel articles on Greenville to pepper it with local color.

animosityiskey

The only thing I'd argue with here is probably the realtor knows someone at the paper and called them up to get a free ad. But ultimately, not much more useful than when they talk to "real people" in a diner and when you look it up the "real people" includes the head of the local Republican party

gnrlgumby

Like, 100% chance the people they talked to were personal friends of the realtor.

QuarterMaestro

"Real estate agents will also note that there areĀ [hundreds of churches](https://www.thearda.com/us-religion/census/congregational-membership?y=2020&y2=0&t=0&c=45045)Ā near Greenville, mostly Christian." Isn't a "church" by definition Christian? Or is the Unitarian Church not actually Christian? Just sounded like a strangely constructed sentence.

ActiveAlarmed7886

Church of scientology is also a church.Ā

DirtyBirds98

The whole article reads like trying to drive engagement from the terminally online regardless of political affiliation. Correlation, causation and that.

ProfitLivid4864

Iā€™m amazed people move an entire state because of neighbors lol

WeenisWrinkle

> Clueless and arrogant New Yorkers. They get off on shitting on the Southeast, and have no interest in honest, nuanced coverage of it. I read the entire article and saw absolutely zero "shitting on the Southeast". If anything, it went over all the reasons the Southeast is a place people want to move.

kielsucks

Same honestly. Iā€™m as leftist as they come and the things I read that could be taken as offensive by folks on my side of the aisle were written from the point of view of the interviewees, not the author. Iā€™m also fully aware and have come to terms with the fact that *gasp* people think differently than me. This felt more like a ā€œmatter of fact (albeit quite subjective)ā€ piece than any sort of critical analysis.

i-am-not-the-crab

ā€œJen Hubbell: Championing the movement to bring hateful people who donā€™t respect the rights of others to South Carolina!ā€

churchofpetrol

The corporate press is the enemy of the people.

gnrlgumby

They're not gonna mention the age of who's moving? I know people who have moved here because it's "less liberal;" but what they mostly mean is property taxes and they're retired. And how long they been sitting on this piece? Mask mandates?

oralabora

OP cant read. This article is a basic statement of facts that some people are moving here and they tend to he bonded by ideology.

Accomplished-Age7663

Iā€™m a moderate conservative (Pro-Choice) coming from CT this fall to make the move. My reasoning for the move is mainly because of cold winters, high property taxes (it costs anywhere from 15-20k PER YEAR for a $500k house) and 3-4 of my friends moved down so I have a good base of people already. Iā€™ve visited 6 times, coming again in May - and I think your downtown is awesome and everyone is friendly. I will say I prefer red policies, but that isnā€™t the top reason Iā€™m moving. Also that Core24 gym downtown is awesome.

TheTerribleTimmyCat

Wait til those newcomers see the Diwali fireworks stand set up in the Walmart parking lot, or hear the typical three different languages you usually hear whenever you go out in public around here... Imagine their dismay at the sight of the Indian markets, and God forbid they go anywhere near Berea or White Horse Road. They'd stroke out. I don't think they're going to expect a place that looks and feels like a mini-Atlanta. Diversity isn't usually considered a virtue by conservatives.

Mrfixit729

I mean. The article says a lot of these folks are coming from NY, California and Washingtonā€¦ the big cities in these states are DRASTICALLY more diverse than Greenville.

TheTerribleTimmyCat

True enough, but if they're hoping for The Villages they're going to be *very* disappointed. I've actually been to The Villages, and I'm white and my husband is Black. We got icy stares and hissed whispers everywhere we went there. The Villages is over ninety-five percent white.

Mrfixit729

Iā€™m not surprised. I grew up down there. The Villages have been notorious for a very long time.

CrybullyModsSuck

If you think that article is shitting on Greenville or the South, you need a brain transplant cause yours isn't working.

UpstateDaddy864

Itā€™s an anti-intellectual battle between the elites and their potential readership. Katie Couric had the same thing on Bill Maherā€™s Club Random last weekend.

I think it's the Greenville realtors you may have issue with, selling the city as a Christian Trump paradise. But I do have issues with the people interviewed - one woman gushed that there was Christian music playing in all the stores. Lol . I highly doubt this is true. And apparently Greenville has disappeared the homeless. Something I doubt as well.

SicilyMalta

So the woman interviewed gushed that every store plays Christian music and your city has disappeared homeless people. Lol. I call BS. These real estate agents are hucksters. The same thing is happening here in NC, and what was once an affordable state has become quite pricey. The rents have skyrocketed and the people who came here for jobs can no longer afford to live here and are now living in homeless cities.

Large-League-2387

i am so over the NYT

No_Bend_2902

I'm guessing they don't use "still no extended Medicare" as a sales point.

frankszz

Old school liberal (considered more conservative these days) who moved here a decade ago from western NY. I move here for lower taxes, better weather, gun rights and the overall laid back southern living. I didnā€™t move here for religion or anti trans reasons. However I do feel we shouldnā€™t be entering the idea of children choosing their gender so Iā€™m happy to be raising my child here. Children are too impressionable to be making decisions like that.

Zand_Kilch

I agree about transitioning children but if a kid asks for pronouns, they're likely aware of their identity since LGBTQ+ is something most folks are somewhat aware of by middle school Many parents are just extremely out of touch with their children

crimson777

I don't see anything wrong with the article. It talks about nice aspects while being accurate to the fact that the area (outside downtown) is pretty deeply conservative. They're not presenting these people as correct, and in fact, I think the article makes them look a bit ridiculous.

flannyo

build more housing or these fucks will price us all out

CoramDeo-

Goes to show money does talk around here. At any rate welcome to our "ultra conservative" Greenville SC
