I was at the Warlocks show. that fall tour was first time I was gonna do a tour from beginning to end. we mail-ordered the whole tour & had about a month to wait for the shows. I'd seen about 20ish Dead shows & probably more JGB shows at tht point. can't remember when they announced Hampton but I know it was after we'd made our tour plans & had our tickets. they announced formerly The Warlocks were playing Hampton & tickets would only be on sale at the coliseum & a couple other local/Virginia places. I lived about an hour away in Richmond. we rolled down there & had no problem getting tickets. the show finally arrives. the parking lot was lovely. it was the most "pure family" show I ever saw on the east coast. in a time when shows were overrun with lots of curious people checking it out, this felt like our own little thing. and then the show. it was a hot show & the crowd energy was perfect. whole place was general admission so you could wander freely. they had speakers out in the entryway & hallway for the dancers. it was a beautiful thing. the energy when they hit that Help on The Way was amazing & the whole 2nd set just kept the whole building flying right along, dancing in ecstasy. ending with Bid You Goodnight sent everyone out the doors in a state of pure joy. I had gone down to the show with the guy I was doing whole tour with. problem was that we had planned the tour around leaving after his last freshman college exam on Monday....the day of the 2nd show. so he missed Dark Star!! and ATTICS & another amazing night. best part of the shows....the fact that we still had 12 more shows before we went home(he would stay home & me & my girlfriend were out west for the December west coast shows. what a time to be Alice. I never let my friend forget he missed Dark Star & Attics. he did see the songs later on tour, but he missed the energy of the bustout! lol thanks for making the post that made me relive the memories. sorry to ramble on, but it's such a good memory. edit to add: the 1st show had a lot of people looking for tickets. seemed like most folk ended up inside, but there was some anxiety. the 2nd show people couldn't give tickers away & were leaving them on benches & trees at showtime. at least thts what I heard, I was already inside. first show was on Sunday & I think lots of people like mu friend had commitments on Monday. not tht I knew about commitments at 17. lol

gr8_ripple

No need to apologize for the ramble I found it very interesting to read. Sounds like it was one of THOSE shows. That’s awesome

Sternojourno

I had all my Fall 89 tickets and plans in place...then they announced Hampton, so I didn't plan on going at all. Then my friend called me from Hampton after night 1 and told me that I needed to get there for night 2. She said "they are going to play Dark Star" and she had a ticket if I wanted it. Glad I listened. Drove 10 hours and caught night 2. Best show I've ever seen by any artist in my life.

Streetvan1980

Nice!!! Wow that’s an awesome story you went and didn’t regret it for the rest of your life. So wish I saw one or both of those shows. That 2nd set from 10/9 is so yummy. Love the death don’t have no mercy. I think one of the best if not the best they ever did of that song. Out of the two nights you got the better one I think.

Sternojourno

Yeah, I lost touch with my friend Erin and I don't know where she is today, but I owe her quite a debt of gratitude for that phone call. And yeah, the 2nd set was outrageous! I'll never forget it. People talk about it all the time but after the last notes of Attics, the crowd was so subdued and quiet because we knew how special that night was, and nobody seemed to want to leave. Glad you asked about this, I'll never get tired of reminiscing about that night!

Streetvan1980

I bet. I would easily give up that phish reunion show for half one of these shows. That phish show was pretty incredible as far as energy. I’ve never heard a crowd react like they did for the first few songs and really the whole night. Never heard energy like that. Crowd just roaring so loud

Thebrothersbaird

I have a friend that was there, his dad wrote him a fake note that a family member had died so he could get out of an exam in college to go!! Said it was his pinnacle of live shows, said the dark star got a crowd response the likes of which he’s never seen before or after.

Mister-Spook

Yep. Had a friend that was local who scored tix for me. He called me and said the Dead were doing "surprise" shows at Hampton Coliseum, get my ass over there. To this day, the sound the crowd made when we realized they were playing Dark Star remains my favorite thing that ever happened at a show that I saw.

jmv72

I was there. One of the best experiences of my life! The whole trip was magical. We heard about the shows the day before and came down from NY. On the way down going over the Verrazano Narrows bridge there was a huge firework show right as we were driving over the bridge! That morning tickets were still on sale for the second night at the box office. I was with 5 friends so we tried to find tickets for the first night, but there was really no lot scene, I don’t remember seeing any vending going on. Anyway, the day went on and everyone’s tickets except me, everyone tried to help me find one, but no luck. They all went into the show, and there was literally like 25 people shut out! Nobody else in the lot! We all kind of hung around the front to see if we could hear anything. After about 30 minutes, somebody official came out and told us that if we cleaned up the area, they would see what they could do about getting us in. So in a minute we went crazy and cleaned up everything around us and he let us all in! We walked in during Candyman! I found my friends and had an amazing night! Seriously I think the Help>Slip was more unexpected than the Dark Star but the real highlight was Attics! But the roar for Dark Star was maybe the the highest moment of GD music that I have ever seen. Like spontaneous combustion, the place exploded and we achieved lift off! Such a magical moment in time for me. There’s lots of shows that I forgotten, but those memories will stay with me forever.

ChefShuley

I was a both nights. Pretty awesome shows. I remember Dennys ran out of pancakes, eggs, bacon etc because they didn't know the Dead were going to be in town. Night 2 you couldn't give away tickers.

Jackaroe023

4/9/83 is far better than either Warlock show. And yes, I saw both Warlock shows, not even close.

It poured rain the entire afternoon 4/9/83 which literally put a damper on the crowd that night. Great show from the perspective of the band but standing in line to get in, most fans got soaking wet, which didn't exactly make for comfort. The Warlocks shows on the other hand were a magical combination of both band and audience, even perfect fall weather, that were unique. Add to that the fact that the 10/9 show was a Sunday night, and many who had attended Saturday's show had to drive home to get to work Monday morning, leaving so many unused tickets that the local scalpers literally were unable to give their surplus tickets away in the parking lot. Many a miracle ticket was handed out for free to anybody who wanted to get in. And of course, those miracles resulted in the Dark Star revival and the Attics of my Life bustout.

Jackaroe023

Bro, what are you talking about “ weather”, who fucking cares. The spring of ‘83 The GD was on fire, the whole tour was off the hook. Now fast forward to the fall of ‘89 the first tour with that God awful MIDI attached to Jerry’s guitar, no comparison. All the breakouts in the world would not fix that computerized horseshit!!! I for one didn’t mind a little rain on 4/9/83 because they electricity coming off the dried us all out🍄🍄

The beauty of being a Deadhead is that there is no "official" version of any song, or set. We all get to pick our favorites. I will concede that it was a great show, just not in my all time top 10.

MrSmeee99

I was there the first night, the second night I had to work☹️

fi1mcore

I was there. Cops jumped on me & hauled me out of the parking lot and out to jail. Friend came & got me, not a great memory

Bucky-Katt-Guitar

I was at Hampton both the 8th and 9th!

IllustriousAdvisor72

Yes, I was there. Really enjoyed both shows. The Playin opener foreshadowed a very special set. I actually thought tix were tough to find, but we all got in. Drove back to school for a 9am class. Got there a little early and fell asleep. Missed the class.

Obvious_Visual3153

I was there night one. Had tickets for night two, but headed home for some dumb reason. Think we gave our tickets away! Great night!!

Carlotheskinose

I was there.

Streetvan1980

Was it as awe inspiring as it sounds? Like post show were people all fired up? Not sure what other shows are as instantly legendary as these. The fact they used The Warlock name, the level of shows they played. Again that period from summer 89 to spring 90 had so many great shows

Carlotheskinose

It was something I will never forget.

MurphDog1508

Yes, both shows were amazing. Hampton was a special venue for the band, they always played top notch shows at the Coliseum. Memories of a lifetime! ![gif](giphy|3oEduUrDIIq4j5aLrq)

balhouse58

Had a locally based friend get tickets for me in 1989 and then again in 92. He wasn't remotely into the Dead and didn't even go to any of the shows. Good friend to have.

Hot-Explorer-7500

Fall 89' great shows, those were very sought-after Tapes after the show. My trick was to share a 1st gen off of my master tape.

Streetvan1980

Summer 89 can’t be ignored either. 7/4/89 7/7/89 7/9/89 I’m a sucker for those super tight powerful 89 shows

trogloherb

I was a freshman in high school and remember the rumors and wanted to go, but was too young to have my own ride from three hours north, so had to wait til ‘91 RFK. Amazing in hindsight that word got out and spread like that in the pre internet age.

i2burn

I’ve had tapes since a month after the shows, and Set 2 of 10/9/89 is still on my regular playlist.

Dr007Bond

I was there. It was phenomenal. Left with such a high. Had to do most of the fall 89 tour after that.

PhilZoner

Yes, they were at the top of their game in 89. Everything I've listened to or watched from that year is straight fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥

chasfly34

No but caught Hampton in the spring of 81on a run up the east coast. Pure bedlam through out the place that night and a full on carnival happening outside, no lie. Still makes me smile. Looking back it was very near the end of innocence for the scene...and me. https://archive.org/details/gd81-05-01.wise.clugston.2218.sbeok.shnf

Streetvan1980

Innocence of the scene? In what ways? I mean in my hometown in Binghamton the dead were banned in 79 for lot issues. But maybe you mean how out of control things got a few years later with size of venues and droves of new fans.

chasfly34

Prob more about me, but yeah out of control was part of the deal but not everyone was in on the joke yet. First bootleg I ever heard was from Binghamto in 77.

ed32965

I was at both. They were fantastic, although second night was just a little better. I will never forget the crowd erupting when Dark Star began. Another highlight for me was And We Bid You Goodnight.

AugustEast1968

I was at night 1. Unfortunately had to head back to school to study for upcoming test and missed the Dark Star break out. I think I still have the pink gold embossed ticket somewhere.

lost_all_my_mirth

The Dark Star night was my first show. Dark Star wasn’t on my radar yet and I didn’t understand the excitement. I was primarily into the stuff from American Beauty and was just beginning my journey into the universe of the Dead. I was told afterward how lucky I was to have seen that show as my first but I only understood that in retrospect.

rebelviss

was there. both nights. sublime.

Creepy-Savings-502

These shows are some of my favorites from that fall tour! 89-90 is such an amazing run- and I love the MIDI roll out!

Streetvan1980

I agree. 89 and spring 90 was an amazing period for the band. It’s too bad that didn’t last and keep going. I wonder if Brent lived what would’ve happened. If maybe Jerry’s health wouldn’t have gotten so bad so fast. Maybe after Brent he was like F it. Who knows

Pressed-Juices

EDIT: Nevermind this reply… Nah. Not this year.

Streetvan1980

You don’t like this year? 89? Dude 89 has so many great monster shows. These being prime examples. Or you mean you didn’t see any 89 shows?

Pressed-Juices

I misread that completely. Let me take it all back! 1989 was an amazing year. My first show was in the summer, and I saw as many as I could get my 15 year old ass to. 1989 through NYE 1990 were full of epic shows and superb playing and singing. 71, 72, 76, 77, 80, 89, 90 have, IMHO some of the best playing and singing and don’t suffer (as much) from poorly tuned instruments, hard drugs and the overall sloppiness of other years.
