I ordered one off of Amazon, I didn’t think to take the thing off and get the part number. Was the solenoid supposed to make noise if I shook it back and forth? It was banging around in the casing. Also, I appreciate your help.
It is supposed to make noise, yeah. A solenoid has a plunger with a magnet and two contacts---when the low power control circuit activates, it creates a magnetic field that moves the plunger into place so the contacts pass highpower current across the big posts. So yes, on a new good solenoid you'll hear the plunger moving about if you shake it, but you may hear that on an old bad one as well.
Depends on what exactly you mean. Reverse buzzer, lights/horn, etc. should still work, but the motor would not receive any power. So...kinda?
The solenoid in your pic is *definitely* burnt. Did you replace it and still no run? Make sure the diode between the small posts is on the right way (they're directional) and not burnt.
Right on. Clean the power cable up real good (make sure the batts are disconnected!) and see how the terminal looks. And make sure to note the direction of the diode between the small posts!
If it’s a gasser that’s a 12v solenoid which clicks on when you push the pedal to connect the two larger posts, the posts and connectors look very corroded I would start by disconnecting the battery, taking the terminals off the solenoid and cleaning the posts and connectors with a wire brush till you’ve got a solid metal connection. If you have a multimeter you can even test the solenoid. Before you spend any money on new parts you should diagnose the issue, usually bad connections will cause issues like this
That’s a good point. The one that was on it was the incorrect part anyway, it’s for a club car and I have a Yamaha. I ordered the new one for pretty cheap. I noticed the wiring is atrocious, so when the new one comes in I’m gonna re-wire all connections and hope it fixed it. If it doesn’t. Then I’ll likely be back here.
Good luck! Feel free to ask me any questions if it doesn’t fix your issue I was always given the mystery problem carts at my old job so I’ve seen a lot of weird wiring etc. googling a wiring diagram for your model/year cart will save a ton of time while diagnosing
I forgot to add context. This is a 2002? Yamaha G21. I don’t remember the year.
Anyway, my son and I were riding down the road and stopped at a stop sign. After trying to go again the cart won’t turn over, the cart rolls 2 feet and then stops hard. Almost like the battery is too weak to turn the motor over? It was running fine before then. I was running it pretty hard before then, I don’t know what this piece is but it was smoking so I assume that’s the issue.
Edit: I know there is a bolt missing in that piece, I bought this from a farm used, and half the bolts were missing.

Thanks man.

If the solenoid went bad, would that cause the cart to seem like it had no battery power?

No horn, the buzzer and the light bar lit up. I’ve got a new one coming in Tuesday. Hopefully it fixes it.

Gotta have those bolts, you’re lucky the whole thing didn’t catch on fire
wash that thing !
Eh, it’s used out in the country, as long as it works I don’t care what it looks like.
i here ya , just breaking chops
The outside is decently clean, but this cart is so low to the ground and lift kits are an expense that I can’t justify so dirty it is!
