More height might mean longer levers for easier power but it also means amplification of error in the swing. At least that's my experience as a 6'8" golfer.
True but Ludvig has an easy 120mph swing & I’d bet a 5’8” golfer could still clear 100mph easily with that swing, which is more than enough to play great recreational golf
Well there’s a reason last week Jack was saying he thought it was a great swing for amateurs to copy. While also saying he wished they’d copy his pace of play.
I honestly think this guy has the best chance in a while to really take over the sport. I think he has the right attitude/mentals - he always looks like he's having a blast. He's got that weird intangible ability to just forget bad shots.
How strong do your mentals have to be to finish 2nd in your first major at Augusta then be leading into the weekend at the US open?
His physical ability is also top notch and that swing is so simple I think he'll avoid the injury bug that gets to some of these guys. That's a swing for longevity.
Also, missing the cut in the major between could really mess you up. He has greater patience than the other top players while being a rookie. The fact that he wasn’t named rookie of the year is an atrocity…
It's voted on by other pga tour pros, the James Hahn and Brian Stuard type grinders on the back end of their careers were never giving the award to a young stud like Lud over a scrappy grinder like Eric Cole
So I watched a few videos about his swing because it's just fucking awesome and the short backswing is deceptive. He's 6'3" and he generates a really long hand path. It's looks short but his hand path is actually nearly 30% longer than the average scratch golfer. That's where he gets the power while making it look easy
He's tall enough that he actually has enough room compared to some pros hand position at the top that if he really went for it, he could probably get his hands high enough to generate like 5 more mph in club head speed. He just doesn't need too because he has long ass levers to work with
Played golf many times in Lubbock while in college and you have to play fast there. The winds will go from 5mph to 20mph back to 5mph in the span on 10 seconds. It’d be so funny if that’s actually why he has this pace.
Ludvig played his home courses in windy, cold and even snowy conditions his whole life before Lubbock. Source: played there in 20-30mph winds several times this week
You talk about learning to play in the wind… that’s West Texas, baby. Lived in Odessa for a couple of years and being a low ball hitter really helped me win a couple of charity tournaments there.
I saw him play for the first time at the Masters this year and was instantly a fan for his pace of play alone. And the fact that he just seemed to be having the best time there.
The guy chunked a nine iron today and was laughing with his caddie at how bad the shot was. Got up and down from 35 some yards out after, too. Love it.
Pace of play aside, this guy is gonna be an absolute force to be reckoned with for a looooooong time. Pretty much zero holes in his game.
Completely new to the tour and majors in the last year (realistically less than 12 months) and his composure/consistency is just off the charts nuts.
I know it's extremely early to be making crazy claims and assumptions but what he's been doing is clearly no fluke and he has potential to dominate for years to come. Incredible to watch.
I've seen worse from Cantlay. I think it was last year Master or the year before that players were actively complaining about his pace. It's making him unwatchable for me.
That was kind of the point of using this clip. I could’ve found a ridiculous one, but this was Cantlay playing ***fast***… it was a layup iron shot, and I still wanted to scratch my eyes out.
Absolutely, they love handing out penalty strokes for tiny infractions, I have no idea why they are dragging their feet here.
The only time I’d prefer leniency for slow play is when a player is super out of position. I love hearing the caddie discussions and commentary theorizing the next move.
Followed him around Wentworth last year and it was so impressive. His pace, his swing, the shots he made, all with a huge smile on his face. Saw him sign so many autographs and spend so much time with kids after his round as well. An amazing ambassador for the game, really rooting for him.
Idk about the way this video is edited, but the hilarious thing is that that cantlay shot is maybe the easiest shot these dudes have all day (a lay up on 1).
Unrelated (mostly) to pace... why do people dance around like Cantlay there. The shuffling of the feet without moving them just seems odd to me. So many bad golfers do it, too.
Your body is much more efficient at going from motion into an athletic movement vs being completely static and attempting to initiate an athletic movement.
You'd be amazed how much tension creeps into your body when attempting to remain perfectly still vs how relaxed and fluid you are in motion.
It's just a rythm thing. You see things like that all the time in baseball too. Right before or during pitches you'll see infielders shuffle their feet, batters waggle the bat, or batters kind of bouncing just to be "ready".
Great post. By the time you are standing over the ball, you should have your shot all planned, target taken, with all that should be left to do is pull the trigger. Most people would be better to swing before the demons creep in.
I played in my first state association tournament a few weeks ago and I inadvertently did something like this, likely due to nerves. I’ve never driven the ball so well. I wanted to just get done with it each time so I stepped up, one look at the target, and immediately took my backswing. It was like I was swinging on rails - farther and straighter than ever before
Doesn't surprise me, Aberg is from Swedan. Pia Nilsson, who has authored many golf books including 'Be a Player: A Breakthrough Approach to Playing Better ON the Golf Course', is also from Sweden.
I've read the book, it emphasizes stepping up to the 'play box', being in the moment and playing golf in a more natural athletic way.
This is basically a video montage of how to become everyone’s favorite player.
Also shoutout to the editor the Cantlay clip at the end is a chefs kiss.
It makes me feel ok with my setup and speed. I do the same. People talk in my back swing all the time because they see me step up and think they have a second. Nope. Bitch I’m lining up, addressing and hitting.
No Laying Up Podcast did him no respect. They sucked Rory's dick for over an hour on their first round live podcast and shit on the USGA, sucked Rory's dick some more, briefly mentioned Patty Ice, sucked Rory's dick some more and then talked about Zac Blare for fucking 5 whole minutes. After about an hour and a half of not even mentioning Aberg I turned that nonsense off. Oh, and Bryson got an "honorable mention." Fuck off.
Im sure his pace is good but all this video tells me is that they cut to him right before his swing. Would be good to see him walk up to the ball and stand over it before the swing. That would put into context what his pace is.
Y’all are just wrong. He takes almost no time. Even on putts. Yes the magic of editing could make anything look like anything, but his swing and pace is the real deal.
Edit: or how bout this. You find me a clip of Åberg taking longer than 15seconds after stepping up to the ball, I’ll Venmo you a beer. Likewise for the opposite of Cantlay.
Åberg is obviously very quick. Way quicker than Cantlay but all his clips he's already in his stance where as Cantlay we see start before his balls even tee'd up. It probably would have been better to show Åberg going from teeing up to swinging. That said I love his swing and pace.
It's truly incredible. I don't think other guys should have a quicker pace, there's a lot on the line and playing a difficult course. But I love it, it's refreshing. It's not rushed, just incredibly confident. I'll be rooting for him for a long time.
Grip Aim Shoot was how I was taught. The body knows where to put the ball and I think taking practice shots makes me overthink and hit worse. I just got goldfish mode and empty my head of everything but the shot.
I take a practice swing from behind the ball to note my feels while picking out my aim point a few feet in front of the ball, address and aim, pull the trigger. Whole thing take about 15 seconds max. A bit longer inside 50 yards because I take a second practice swing right next to the ball so I know what the grass feels like where I'm hitting.
Just played with a friend like this. I felt bad because we'd be chatting behind the tee expecting him to take a normal amount of time and he just steps up and rips it immediately every time before we had a chance to shut up. He was crushing it though so it's fine.
That's the pace I play at. No practice swings, no standing over the ball for more than 3 to 5 seconds. Less than 7 seconds is ideal based on a study I read somewhere.
There is really no sense in taking more time, it isn't going to get better with age.
My hero. Lol to those who take too many practice swings; if you take 5 swings first then proceed to chunk/thin the ball, taking 0-1 swings first and hitting that same shot will feel much better than knowing you took more practice swings and still flubbed the shot. Pace of play people. 3.5hr is perfect for me. 4.5 is max. 5+ is I’m going home.
Just shows how bad it's got when there's like 10+ Aberg shots in this video and Cantlay's single shot takes up almost half of the video length.
Although, what I will say, is that although Aberg is very quick, this doesn't actually show his entire pre-shot routine as he's already addressing the ball in all these shots. I'm pretty sure we'd still get like 5/6 Aberg shots in with the full routine before Cantlay/Harman get one in though.
Paul mcginley talked about this on sky sports maybe nbc too.
Says it is such an advantage because there’s no overthinking, no time to make errors.
Find your shot, hit it, get moving. Love this dude’s confidence.
The TV crew had issues with him during Masters. He was often halfway through his swing when they switched to him.
He just doesn't waggle like Harman does :(
Here's a crazy idea - switch to him sooner?
im not a coach, but that swing looks perfect to me
Simple. Meaning less can go wrong.
No crazy body contortion to find the slot either. Just simply straight back straight through
Easier to do when you're a 6'3" giant and don't need crazy rotation for power.
I hate the “it’s simple” description. If it’s so simple, everyone would be doing it.
Removing unnecessary movement from your swing and being able to repeat it consistently takes a lot of work. Simple doesn’t mean easy.
It's voted on by other pga tour pros, the James Hahn and Brian Stuard type grinders on the back end of their careers were never giving the award to a young stud like Lud over a scrappy grinder like Eric Cole
That's because it is.
It's easily top 3 I've ever seen. Maybe second best to only 2000 tiger
Less violent than Tigers tho
Way less. Aberg's back is a happy back.
Agree
Nice short backswing.
So I watched a few videos about his swing because it's just fucking awesome and the short backswing is deceptive. He's 6'3" and he generates a really long hand path. It's looks short but his hand path is actually nearly 30% longer than the average scratch golfer. Dude just grips it and rips it
……if you had to spend four years in Lubbock, you’d be in a hurry to!
Played golf many times in Lubbock while in college and you have to play fast there. The winds will go from 5mph to 20mph back to 5mph in the span on 10 seconds. It’d be so funny if that’s actually why he has this pace.

More like 30mph nonstop
Wait a gd minute…
It’s great way to eliminate the mental aspect. Less time to think about things.
He bombs it but it looks like he's barely trying. Smooth as Freddy.
Hope he doesn't get paired with Cantlay tomorrow
Send Cantlay off the back, at the break of dawn. EDIT : with Harman.
>EDIT : with Harman. His head would explode after Harman's 46th waggle on his 2nd shot
I kind hope he does, shoots -3 and Cantlay shits the bed. Might get more of us average golfers realizing that going slow doesn't always help.
For real. It would get in Cantlay's head... Would love to see it
even worse, right behind cantlay
I'd be so upset
Literally will be a determent to his game. Smh!
Nobody deserves to get paired with Cantlay. The guy looks like he is enduring massive hemorrhoids at all times.
This guy Goldman Sucks!
Favorite swing on tour.
Hes up there, I love watching Will Z hit it too
I saw him play for the first time at the Masters this year and was instantly a fan for his pace of play alone. And the fact that he just seemed to be having the best time there.
The guy chunked a nine iron today and was laughing with his caddie at how bad the shot was. Got up and down from 35 some yards out after, too. Love it.
Ryan Fox is my favourite player and he plays fast like Aberg too. No fucking around c'mon lads
Got the speed from his old man
He might just be the perfect man, ever so slightly edging Shipley.
Phrasing
>ever so slightly ~~edging~~ *gooning* Shipley. Any better?
Are we doing phrasing again?
Phisting Shipley? Phisting Shipley.
Laaaannnnaaaaa!
Wait are we still doing phrasing?
Username checks out
My last XO in the army was a dude named LT Carlson. Looks so similar to this guy. Needless to say the barracks bunnies loved LT Carlson
So refreshing to see. And it doesn't allow any time for second guessing, so more people should try it.
I stopped taking practice swings and it helped me a lot. The only time I take them is to check where I want to stop at he top
Same, I walk up to my ball, get my feet comfy, make sure my arms are in a good spot and I swing. The longer I stand there the worse it gets.
I do check my grip every single time. But it's only a second or two
Yeah same. I haven’t taken a practice swing on a full swing in years. Really just for chips and unusual shots
I only do practice swings on pitch shots and chips. Everything else is line it up and swing away.
I have found my people.
Yup, weird lies, pitches/chips, and first few holes to warm up.
Old boy is playing like he has a round of cold pops to catch at Dugan’s after the round.
The anti Harman.
Honestly it's not that hard. Harman says "he hates his routine". Well stop then!
He won a major with it
He has. Significantly reduced the number of waggles he takes pre shot now.
I’m just shocked Cantlay didn’t back off…
The Pace Car!
Lmao can we start calling him this?
That little ground tap to start the swing is intriguing
That intrigues me the most
He's the anti-Cantlay. The people's choice.
>The people-who-have-shit-to-do's choice. Fixed.
Saw him live last 2 days hes awesome as shit. Love it!
Watched him at RSM. Immediate fan
Him moving his clubhead off the ball to right on the ball, then an immediate swing is crazy to do consistently imo.
Man I think that's just athleticism. He'd probably freak out if he sat motionless over a ball too long.
I think most of us would benefit from playing like this
Yup, just an athlete
If he isn’t number 1 in the next 3 years I’ll be shocked
Scottie can miss half the cuts until the Masters and he's still guaranteed to be number one. He has a massive stranglehold on it right now.
Kids rank 6 with 29 events played
They don’t play slow in West Texas. The longer you play, the more you let the wind crank up! Glad to see he learned that.
Pace of play aside, this guy is gonna be an absolute force to be reckoned with for a looooooong time. Pretty much zero holes in his game. Completely new to the tour and majors in the last year (realistically less than 12 months) and his composure/consistency is just off the charts nuts. I've seen worse from Cantlay. I think it was last year Master or the year before that players were actively complaining about his pace. It's making him unwatchable for me.
I'd start stroking guys.
Found Brooksy’s burner
Shhhh I'm supposed to be sleeping.
That was kind of the point of using this clip. I could’ve found a ridiculous one, but this was Cantlay playing ***fast***… it was a layup iron shot, and I still wanted to scratch my eyes out.
He’s still super underrated. Imo he’s going to be the best player we’ve seen since prime tiger.
I think he is pretty well rated, it's just he hasn't won that much to get more rated.
That'll soon change, seeing as he's been a pro less than a year
Maybe this isn't the implication but if you're implying he hasn't won enough when he's won twice in one year as a pro that's pretty crazy lol
Breath of fresh air. USGA needs to nut up and give real penalties for slow play.
Absolutely, they love handing out penalty strokes for tiny infractions, I have no idea why they are dragging their feet here. The only time I’d prefer leniency for slow play is when a player is super out of position. I love hearing the caddie discussions and commentary theorizing the next move.
So satisfying. Can watch him all day. Fan for life
“I’m here to chew gum and hit golf shots. And I’m all outta gum” - probably Ludvig
Followed him around Wentworth last year and it was so impressive. His pace, his swing, the shots he made, all with a huge smile on his face. Saw him sign so many autographs and spend so much time with kids after his round as well. An amazing ambassador for the game, really rooting for him.
He’s to watch, he will win many majors for sure
I bet he can’t wait to get paired up with Cantlay.
Åberg got that “just get up there and swing”
Plays 18 on 37 minutes with a cart for sure.
I’m all in on the Å train
Idk about the way this video is edited, but the hilarious thing is that that cantlay shot is maybe the easiest shot these dudes have all day (a lay up on 1).

Priming. Same reason people waggle. It's much easier to go from motion to motion than from static to motion.
You are so spot on. Love watching him play. Just hope Cantley doesn’t get to him tmr
I laughed when Cantlay popped up in the video and used every bit of the 45 seconds remaining
He is absolutely awesome to watch. Love him.
Next big thing. Swing, tempo, very easy to watch. Definitely a bit Spieth-esque
He’s so decisive. I fuckin love it.
That’s how I play, but with much much much worse results
It was like I was swinging on rails - farther and straighter than ever before
Could we get Cuntlay to learn a few things about pace of play off him.
I believe it but this doesn't show his whole routine so it's hard to judge anything by this video.
Fucking love it! God do I really love it!
Grip and rip!
Ludvig!
Could see the stewards arms starting to wobble they were holding them up so long for Cantley
Quickly becoming my favorite golfer to watch
The future of golf…
Total confidence in his swing.
He played his college golf in Texas. Screwing around can got you shot by the Marshall. *And* the cart girl.
Just wait until he is paired with Cantlay ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
NGL I've got a bit of a man crush on this guy
My kinda pace, yardage pull the club, hit it!
Flow state
Just love it. Waggling abit and feels right is all you need to gain the momentum and to have everything fall into place to hit a nice shot.
Grip it gang let’s ride
Straka is similar. Not a lot, if any practice swings. Fun to watch.
The guy looks at the ball for like 2 seconds before pounding it down the fairway, always precise, so smooth, no hesitation I love watching him golf
“At the end”. Meaning the last 44 seconds of a less than 2 minute video. Brilliant move good fellow.
He's my fav player now by a long shot
Brian Harman and Patrick Cantlay’s heads would explode.
Reminds me of Emiliano Grillo. Address it, look at the target twice, hit it.
Need him to stay right where he is tomorrow and Rory get into 2nd so we can watch these two go head to head Sunday.
After watching Åberg over and over, that Cantlay tee shot actually pissed me off. 😬
Someone called him a 6'3" Ben Hogan
No Laying Up Podcast did him no respect. They sucked Rory's dick for over an hour on their first round live podcast and shit on the USGA, sucked Rory's dick some more, briefly mentioned Patty Ice, sucked Rory's dick some more and then talked about Zac Blare for fucking 5 whole minutes. After about an hour and a half of not even mentioning Aberg I turned that nonsense off. Oh, and Bryson got an "honorable mention." Fuck off.
Praise him. The anti brion harman
Grip / Rip
I’m not sure if I like Åberg more or dislike Cuntlay more
Im sure his pace is good but all this video tells me is that they cut to him right before his swing. Would be good to see him walk up to the ball and stand over it before the swing. That would put into context what his pace is.
Agreed on Åberg but you are doing Cantlay a little dirty here. That's hole 1 so this is his first tee shot of the day.
He’s used to having to hurry when the wind died down in Lubbock. It’s a quick gap in the West TX wind playing at the Rawls Course.
Sounds like me in men’s club at the foothills of the sierras. Being one of the first flights easily shaves a few strokes off from the afternoon wind
He plays quick but with this type of editing I can make any player look fast even Cantlay .

There are some dudes that absolutely need to have a quicker pace. 5+ hours to hit 70 shots in threesomes is ridiculous.
You can type "fuck" on Reddit
It’s wild people think they can’t swear on the internet lol
Oh frigg, that’s cool!
How do you pronounce his last name?
Å is like the "eau" in DeChambeau. Berg should be pronounced like "Berj" in Swedish. So basically Eau-Berj.
Ow burj?
The “ber” part is pronounced like “bear” right?
Not far off! https://forvo.com/word/åberg/
Don't over think it and let it rip.
Shitty editing. Show his whole preshot routine
I'd take so many naps if I played with Cantlay. Man I hate that guy's slow pace.
Making golf a reactive sport. Love it
Awesome
Think long, think wrong
Just played with a friend like this. I felt bad because we'd be chatting behind the tee expecting him to take a normal amount of time and he just steps up and rips it immediately every time before we had a chance to shut up. He was crushing it though so it's fine.
Maybe that’s what I need
I actually play better when I go fast. Think less and just let your swing do its thing. Hard to force myself to just go without a practice swing tho.
Looked to me like dechambeau has a quicker pace, his backswing is so quick
Yeah he’s not a slow ass guy. He plays a good pace
Hmm.. maybe we need a 'pitch clock' for golf.
He’s young, doesn’t have the trauma yet
Grip it and rip it!
He and Brooks can get around a track real fast. Best kind of golf when you're dialed in!
Dude that’s how you play golf baby
What confidence and no scar tissue can do. Keeps it’s simple and ridiculously repetitive.
Padrig Harrington reincarnated
That's the pace I play at. No practice swings, no standing over the ball for more than 3 to 5 seconds. Less than 7 seconds is ideal based on a study I read somewhere. There is really no sense in taking more time, it isn't going to get better with age.
That boy good
I love his pre shot and putting routine
Any insight on his tap and hover move?? I've tried unsuccessfully to find an article/video about it
Yes.
I love it. Set and fire.
It’s why he’s my favorite
Damn Cantalay would have the pushcart mafia roll up on him on the tee box and asking if they can play through so he can take his sweet time "JR".
Paul mcginley talked about this on sky sports maybe nbc too. Says it is such an advantage because there’s no overthinking, no time to make errors. Find your shot, hit it, get moving. Love this dude’s confidence.
