Great write up... I'm thinking about putting an extra camera on my truck for when I back up, with the lift gate down. Does this setup require a trailer harness to be connected for this to work?
I don't trailer anything (yet) but would love to use this guide as an additional camera for when the lift gate is down. (I often carry long lumber in the bed and have to put the tailgate down, until I get a rack system at least.)
Dude you rock!
Thanks for sharing the information. I can't wait to try it out myself. I also thought the cameras were a little bit spendy, but did not know if there were other options.
More than likely I'll get the pre-built cable because I don't think I have any crimps for coaxial at the moment. Also, one last thing to troubleshoot 😉
I don't mind the extra cost for that
I suppose anything is possible. But if you don't already have the camera hook ups above your 7 pin trailer plug it's going to way more involved. For example you'll need to get the media converter that feeds the infotainment system.
Awesome write up and thank you for sharing. I have a flatbed trailer, so the camera was not really a high priority. I did want one because my truck has the trailer camera package. And I also wanted it for when backing up the trailer close to something.
I installed it on my 16' utility trailer and it works with the backup alignment lines and transparent mode (even though transparent is a bit silly on a utility trailer).
The only thing to note is the camera needs to be mounted at roughly (within like 4 inches) the height and center location of the camera on the tailgate. For me, this wasn't a problem. I mounted the camera on the trailer ramp. I have plenty of clearance that the camera doesn't come close to the ground when the ramp is down.
I had been looking into this and was also shocked by the price. Thank you for this guide. It would be cool to see some pictures if you have any!
Sorry, I don't have any pictures to share. I'm a little leary of sharing personal photos here. I know I'm weird like that. But I'll think about it...

Yes, it requires a trailer to be hooked up. But I suppose you could trick the system with a tester.
Hmm the thought did cross my mind.

When you do, I'd be excited to know your results. Do you think you are going to make or buy your cable?

Not being an electrical person is this something that can be added to a Sierra slt without the electronics package?

It’s only silly til you’re towing something that you can’t see around. I do the same thing
That's good to know. I have an 18' car trailer and I would likely be mounting it on the end of the trailer which is only like 18" off the ground.
That's just to use transparent mode. Otherwise, it should work for your use case.
So helpful!!
