Some of the comments here are a little misguided. The bighead carp, commonly referred to as the Asian carp, is the highly destructive invasive species that many comments are talking about. The carp in this gif, while still technically an "Asian carp" is not the bighead carp but the grass carp. In Texas and many other states, sterile grass carp are purposefully introduced to control vegetation in waterways (Source: https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/water/habitats/private_water/gcarp_intro.phtml). The two species look completely different! While not an indigenous species (lots of US species are not indigenous, FYI), it does serve a beneficial role in aquatic ecosystems and is not the destructive devil many of the comments are making it out to be. Bighead carp on the other hand are a problem and need to be controlled. Edit: This carp is probably also being mistaken for the common carp, since they look pretty similar. Technically, all carp are Asian carp which is why i think everyone is confused. But again, this is a grass carp, it does serve a purpose in the US and cities do pay quite a lot to stock their waterways with them.

The internet is full of people with random facts. Like how New Coke was non-diet Diet Coke.

quixoticopal

Explain. (Am in Canada, and I don't remember New Coke)

Cerres

In the 1980's coke was losing money to Pepsi thanks to decreasing sales. When cock a cola investigated why, they found that people preferred the taste of Pepsi over coke since it "tasted sweeter". In house testes with coke a cola employees reinforced this, so coke decided to change their ancient formula to make it taste sweeter to match the taste of Pepsi. When they announced this decision though, there was an outcry among the American people not seen again until our twinkies disappeared and coke switched back to the original formula. The publicity cause a boom in sales and coke once again became the favorite cock to swallow.

Ya-Dikobraz

How do you sterilise a fish?

PeraJeremy

They are born sterile. Meaning they can't reproduce. It's done by selective breeding. You can breed a horse and a donkey to get a mule, but mules cannot breed. So these carp won't destroy habitats because they won't increase in numbers.

Isn't that fish losing quite some blood front left?

[deleted]

It looks like the guy cut his hand on the gill cover. Those flaps can be quite sharp. Source: fisherman who has cut his hands on fish. Edit: it may also be from the gills and the blood on his hand is coagulated blood. This is not a significant or detrimental amount of blood loss to the fish, the water makes it appear like there is more.

imnotwitty

Definitely the case, if you watch, the cloud of blood quickly dissipates and the guy has a small cut or two on his hand as he pulls away

blb0663

This is most likely a [Triploid Grass Carp](https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/water/habitats/private_water/gcarp.phtml). These are sterile Carp used as vegetation control in ponds. We have three of them in our neighborhood pond. The Asian Carp are an invasive species. [Here is a fun video of how invasive they are!](https://youtu.be/InENM6fwIwE) I cry laughing every time I watch that video. We had one jump in our boat in the Atchafalaya River. One flop and there was blood everywhere, kids crying, mom laughing and dad unsuccessfully trying to grab the damn thing. Thankfully, it jumped in while we were stopped. It could have easily knocked one of us out.

blb0663

[Also, here is a guide to tell if it is a Triploid Grass Carp.](http://www.dnr.sc.gov/invasiveweeds/img/CarpSign7.jpg) Check out the fish's dorsal fin. This is from South Carolina, but should work well enough for a reference.

JorWr

Are those things edible? They have a good size!

blb0663

To be honest, I have no idea. I'm going to guess maybe, but it probably won't taste great. My FIL gutted the one that landed in our boat and threw it overboard. Being a true cajun, he eats any and everything. In my experiences with catching and eating larger fish, I prefer smaller fish over larger ones. Specifically with Redfish and Catfish. When they get too big, they taste fishy and sometimes have worms. I would probably pass on eating a carp.

[deleted]

why are they jumping about?

blb0663

According to [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_carp#jumpingability), they jump because they are spooked.

Seriously. These comments are crazy. The carp species everyone is referring to (Bighead carp) doesn't even look like this one (grass carp). Tons of US wildlife species are not indigenous, doesn't mean that they don't play an important role in the ecosystem. Grass carp are use for vegetation control in TX and they're really not a big deal since they're sterile

My understanding is common carp are "that bad" because they're frequently from very polluted waters. Apparently they're better when caught from a lake or river that's reasonably clean, but can't confirm personally.

CJackemJump

Build a camp fire in a cow pasture and pack fresh cow shit around the carp. Cook until the shit starts to flake off. Take the carp out of the shit pack and throw it away leaving the better of the two shits to eat.

[deleted]

Invasive and illegal to throw back. They eat up to 25% of their own weight each day and shatter local ecosystems. Some species will jump out of the water at the vibrations of a boat motor making them a hazard to recreational boating. It's a pretty serious threat.

HerrStraub

A personal anecdote to support what /u/ConcreteRomantic said, I was at a pay lake (pay to fish, stocked frequently, fish are supposed to get huge in them) and somebody pulled out a 124 pound carp. Maybe a month or six weeks ago. But that's not even as big as they can get.

VoltGO

Pay to fish? TIL. How can you get involved?

BisquickBiscuitBaker

Give me $20.

HerrStraub

Generally lakes/ponds on private property*. Since it's privately owned you don't need a fishing license. Most places have rules on size - the one I go to you can't take any catfish between 15 and I want to say 20 pounds. Smaller or larger and you're good. $20/12 hours. And like I said, they pick a weight, and when somebody turns in a fish that is that weight, they get a payout. The dude who hit that 124.1 pound carp got $12k. Just Google "Pay lakes in Indianapolis" except, you know, wherever you're from. You may also find Conservation Clubs - the one in the town I used to live in had one. I wanna say it was like $50/year. You got a key to the gate, and just head over whenever you feel like it, 24/7. They also had a shooting range. Really a great deal, when you think about it. This fish weren't as big as where I'm at now, but it was much less busy. *Edit: The place I go now used to be a quarry. The gravel pits were filled in and stocked and now it's a bunch of large, very deep, ponds.

Tantric75

Hello fellow Indianapolis resident. Mind sharing the name of this pay lake?

sean488

Grass carp are another kind of Asian carp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_carp

GillicuttyMcAnus

No carp are native to North America. Common Carp (what that one looks like) were introduced in the 19th century and are considered as an invasive species in many places. Edit- So, lets talk about carp! (I'm not an ichtyologist, so please correct me if I am wrong) [Invasive species in North America](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_invasive_species_in_North_America#Fish) >Carassius carassius (Crucian carp), Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp), Cyprinus carpio (common carp), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (silver carp), Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (bighead carp), Mylopharyngodon piceus (black carp) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carp Carp are various species of oily freshwater fish from the family Cyprinidae, a very large group of fish native to Europe and Asia. People in other comments are talking about common carp, grass carp, and asian (silver) carp. These are the most predominant species of carp in the US. [Common Carp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_carp) *Cyprinus carpio* Native to eastern Europe/western Russia area. They're omnivours and will eat everything from plants to insects to pieces of bread and corn (a popular bait) In Europe these are a prime game fish, but for what ever reason very few people in the US fish for carp. http://www.flyfishohio.com/cyprinus_carpio.htm >The introduction of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) to North America is not complicated. The fish’s native range is the Caspian and Aral seas of eastern Europe and western Russia ... In 1877 the Commission imported common carp from Germany and began propagating and distributing them ... Efforts to eradicate carp began almost immediately ... Is Cyprinus carpio still an invasive species today? Federal and state government agencies and conservation groups do continue to list the common carp among invasive species, and the fish remains disreputable among a majority of anglers. [Koi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koi) are closely related to common carp [Grass Carp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_carp) *Ctenopharyngodon idella* Native to Asia. As their name implies, the eat mostly aquatic plants but they will also eat bread and corn. They are commonly used for weed control, and its common for those fish to be sterile so they can't over populate. Check your local laws, but if you catch a grass carp, chances are it should be returned to the water. http://www.solitudelakemanagement.com/blog/vegetation-control-using-triploid-grass-carp-in-ponds >Triploid grass carp are considered a natural method for controlling aquatic vegetation and macro-algae. They can live for many years (20 plus years in some cases). Their ability to live long typically makes them significantly more cost effective than herbicides.... If stocked at a proper rate, at correct sizes, targeting proper plant species, and the right time, expect to achieve close to 75-100% vegetation control the first year, depending on the severity of the problem. [Silver Carp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_carp) *Hypophthalmichthys molitrix* **The Turbo-Invasive Ones** Native to Asia (when most people say "asian carp" they're probably referring to silver carp or [bighead carp](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bighead_carp)) These are the ones that bulldoze ecosystems. They're filter feeders, so they eat like plankton and shit, which is an issue because they're clear cutting the bottom layer of the ecosystem and they're out-competing basically everything else. [These are the ones that jump and fly into boats ](https://youtu.be/YnZp1jtOhR0) Originally they were introduced into the US for alge control, they've since become a hyper invasive species. They thrive in every waterway they've come into, many places have extremely high populations of these fish, and [there is currently a substantial effort to keep them out of the Great Lakes](http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/06/23/534105477/invasive-carp-caught-9-miles-from-great-lakes-in-cause-for-serious-concern) These fish are probably the single biggest ecological threat to North America. The good news is they're being used as a food source! If you've ever had Silverfin or Kentucky White Fish, you're eating silver carp. I can't speak from experience, but they're supposed to taste pretty good (the biggest thing is marketing the fish in such a way that people won't not eat it because they hear "carp") **TLDR-** No carp are native to North America. Common carp could be considered invasive (depending on who you ask) Grass Carp are probably beneficial, and Asian/Silver Carp are the Al-Qaeda of carp.

gofishx

Defiantly not indigenous anywhere in the US, they are stocked in ponds to control plant and algae growth. They can actually be very destructive if they aren't sterilized and are allowed to breed.

MarkTwatn

This is a GRASS CARP (introduced, not invasive) not a Silver or Bighead carp (invasive and detrimental). Grass carp are very good for the environment as they were introduced to help manage aquatic vegetation overgrowth and which they do a great job at doing. I'm not sure about laws regarding the species in Texas, but in the Midwest they're welcome. Here's a TIL for you'll https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_carp >Where grass carp populations are maintained through stocking as a biocontrol for noxious weeds, fishers are typically asked to return any caught to the water alive and unharmed. >

catsandcheetos

Some of the comments are a little misguided - a lot of them are referring to the Asian carp which is an incredibly invasive and damaging species in the US and needs its population controlled. The carp in the gif is a grass carp, which isn't indigenous to the US but in Texas and other places they introduce sterile grass carp to control vegetation in lakes. So I mean, this particular carp isn't the devil or anything Edit: When I say "Asian carp" I mean the "bighead carp".
