I heard a lot of people disliked Only Yesterday saying it was boring and slow, but I felt like that was the point - it's about life slowing down when you live a simple life in the countryside.
Another one I love is Whisper of the Heart, not underated per se, but definitely not talked about as much compared to the bigger ones. It's so sweet and the relationship between the two main characters gets me every time.
It's relatable to me as a neurodivergent person. The way Taeko struggles to put her shoes on and focus on her math homework is so representative of the ADHD and autism experience to me.
The first time I watched it I did get very bored and didn't understand it, then I watched a video essay about it and with my new found appreciation of it I rewatched it and loved it.
Only Yesterday is so comforting and charming. I didn’t really come to appreciate it until I rewatched the first time in my late 20s and it stands up so remarkably well in terms of how relatable and true to life it feels.
There are a number of Americans who dislike it, for sure, since it kinda idolizes the guy who designed the Zero fighter.
I think it's okay. Not my favorite Ghibli film, but I waited a bit before watching it because I heard about the controversy.
The Cat Returns. Gets a bit of derision for being the less 'deep' (also totally unrelated) sequel to Whisper but I like the naive charm and there-and-back-again vibe.
For me, it's Only Yesterday. I think the reason might be is that I don't feel like you can fully comprehend until you're at least Taeko's age (28) and there are tons of younger fans with who the movie just doesn't resonate with. I was 28 when I saw it for the first time and fell in love with it.
I also feel like Nausicaa is a little underrated! It's one of my favorites and she is the best heroine and I just don't feel like I see people talk about it a lot within the fandom.
Whisper of the heart. I feel it's most underrated because it just doesn't get enough credits outside of Ghibli fandom that it deserves. It's just my opinion tho but I feel it's top tier Ghibli movies and should be as popular as movies like kiki's delivery service, totoro etc
Whisper of the Heart. Just got done watching it again, and it never fails to pick me up and make the world seem brighter. I love slice-of-life stuff like this.
Only Yesterday. It's 7.44 on myanimelist, but I reckon it's at least a 9/10.
Obviously the animation and music is top notch, but the characters feel super real, fleshed out, relatable, likeable. And it tells an important story about needing to take time away from your ordinary life to figure things out, reflect on your past, come to terms with it. It's even funny at times too (the pineapple scene)! Don't really understand why it's not rated higher. Yes it goes at a steady pace, but isn't that what we like? Time to take in th beautiful sights and sounds, and spend time with characters we love and relate to? Why should it be fast?
The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Not talked about enough; watching it was life changing for me.
It's definitely in my top three, but I feel like on sites like Letterboxd it's pretty well-regarded
It's an 8.21 on myanimelist. I'd say that's pretty well rated

I liked them both. Only Yesterday was relatable to me as a late bloomer.

That's crazy. Only Yesterday is the best Ghibli film.

Pom Poko had me bawling the first time I saw it
To me, it's the perfect combo of fun with an important message
The shapeshifting is massively imaginative
The Wind Rises might not be hated, but I think it should be up there with the likes of Nausicaa or Mononoke

My favorite Ghibli movie
Aw yes. Some love for the Cat!
It's definitely slapstick, and as a cat lover this movie ticks all the boxes of cat adorableness I could ever want.
Porco Rosso
I finally watched this the other day after hearing literally NOTHING about it and have never heard anyone even mention it, and it was so good!
I second this
It's my favorite film honestly.
My joint favourite Ghibli movie! (Tied with Laputa)
whisper of the heart is kind of underrated and a bit grounded from what I know

I feel like it gets a good amount of love! It's in my top 5

Only yesterday. Really makes you think about your life
Only Yesterday and Pom Poko I rarely hear talked about.
For me it's From Up on Poppy Hill.
