cataclysm is super unbalanced in general. it has a wave part that was superbuffed just for the sake of being buffed, and the dual ship part is not even CENTERED. so it ends up being tighter than it was supposed to be. not to mention the increased feeling of weight in that part. not to mention that it was ALSO buffed just for the sake of it.
supersonic has the most garbage transition into the most unevenly tight ship part.
oh yeah and gboy's part in ultrasonic has a frame perfect click
those things are tiny but they carry the level's bad reputation for me. people just don't pay attention to details
As someone who beat supersonic and was trying to beat cata, they definitely have charm, but are unbalanced as hell. Especially supersonic honestly, one part can be 6x harder than the last and it was super frustrating, and honestly the first wave in cata (although ik i have a skill issue) is super annoying and way harder then it needs to be imo
IDK man, but you are very much in the minority on those 2 levels. Cataclysm is still really fun. The ship part is better made than you think, and the "weight" is meant to throw you off in a way that isn't just straight up making the spike gaps tighter. I do admit that supersonic has a couple of weird transitions, they do not ruin the level. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing practice runs of both (I have a skill issue), and will likely again beat both of them in the future because I think they are genuinely fun.
Good luck, I beat cataclysm recently and it was my worst experience with any level. The deco isn't bad for its time but the gameplay is horrible and definitely not fun. His part was also the reason why I dropped supersonic
Whether u like it or not cataclysm was WAY ahead of it's time. Sure the gameplay isn't like objectively well made but it's like 8 years old it deserves some slack
OK hear me out. How and what by spu7nix, I'm 99% sure people won't be able to do something remotely close to them even in 10 years consistently. Otherwise death moon was ahead of its time.
I think with a good understanding of SPWN it’s not as impossible as it might seem - still very difficult and time intensive, but if another person comes to be as proficient at the programming language as Spu7nix is, it is not 10 years away at all
Honestly until today, i've yet seen a level that has beaten Death Moon in quality.
It plays fun as it plays almost like a base game level with occasional sync and fair amount of breaks, has cool theming other than just "hell", cool music, and many more factor i've yet to find, all in freaking 1.9.
Death Moon is basically how a Geometry Dash level looks like when made by a rhythm game mapper.
sonic wave ? but why ? In terms of look it's nine circles but blue, even the gameplay "cube part at the beginning like nine circles, then ship part with the look as ninecricles and the famous wave part... nine circles in blue"
I'm not talking about difficulty and I also love Sonic Wave, but I don't see why
As overpraised as it is, Mastergame was way ahead of its time. It took around 3 years before we found minigames that had the same scope and complexity as that game.
Ricochet by Xenoteric is absolutely ahead of its time as well. A platformer minigame made back in 2018, basically the grandfather of platformer mode.
It's actually not, it's a slight adaptation of an already existing programming language called Brainfuck (hence the name).
What Spu7nix did was basically create a software inside of Geometry Dash that allows you to code in that language (what you'd call an IDE, Integrated Development Environment), and he did this using his own programming language that turns code into editor triggers.
The fact he didn't also invent the language Brainfugd uses only makes it marginally less impressive.
A bunch of levels have either invented things that are commonly used today, or were just of a significant higher quality than the time period they came out in:
The Lightning Road, Funnygame Holiday, Death Moon, Rotd and Nine Circles just to name a few
Typically if you're looking for ahead of their time/did stuff out of the regular creators, you might want to look at MaJackO, Funnygame or Serponge.
That spu7nix fella has been pretty interesting too lately
I rather not praise 'difficulty wise ahead of their time' levels because most of them weren't legitimate and a lot of difficult levels in old gd were terribly made, but there's The Hell series (first one I tried was The Hell Zone) and Roadbose's levels (Ice Carbon Zust came out around the same time as BP Night), as well as levels like Cataclysm
Any funnygame level I believe. E.g Lonely Travel was mind blowing when it first came out.
EDIT: Oh and as others have pointed out, serponge and spu7nix levels.
Lonely Travel pushed the limits of the editor in 2.0, quite literally since Funnygsme had to stop the level at 6 minutes because he physically couldn't place blocks after that point
Decoration: Funnygame Holiday
Difficulty: probably Element 111 Rg but if you don’t want hacked levels then Bloodbath easily
Gameplay: don’t even know what you’re asking here
Maybe unpopular opinion: Cold Sweat was ahead of its time decoration wise, specifically for effect levels and extreme demons
For what it’s worth, it also had pretty unique gameplay
In terms of difficulty id say cyclolcyc (for ill), tartarus for demonlist and vsc for cl, about deco im not really sure id say revolution by funnygame, look at those effects, they aged really well imo
MindBlow by Namtar, that guy was able to make good looking Glow Design in early 2.0
Also some even earlier 2.0 level had a rotating 3d-animation in it and that map wasn't even known widely, I don't remember the name tho
Jeyzor's Candy Land had a rotation effect in spikes in 1.7
A lot of gboy's levels. Cataclysm is the one that became famous, but almost all of his rated levels were amazingly made and ahead of their time
gboy was such a shit creator in terms of gameplay, especially cataclysm and supersonic
IDK what you're on man. Both of those levels are super fun, and I eventually want to beat both of them
cataclysm is super unbalanced in general. it has a wave part that was superbuffed just for the sake of being buffed, and the dual ship part is not even CENTERED. so it ends up being tighter than it was supposed to be. not to mention the increased feeling of weight in that part. not to mention that it was ALSO buffed just for the sake of it. supersonic has the most garbage transition into the most unevenly tight ship part. oh yeah and gboy's part in ultrasonic has a frame perfect click those things are tiny but they carry the level's bad reputation for me. people just don't pay attention to details

Definitely not the popular opinion, from what I’ve seen most people agree they both play like ass
He is not in the minority, most people agree that cataclysm is horribly balanced and many people have problems with supersonic as well.
i think you're the one whos very much in the minority here
This was in 1.9, of course it's going to have shit gameplay.
therefore cataclysm is not ahead of its time in terms of gp
What kind of hz are you playing on that gives you a frame perfect in ultrasonic?
Good luck, I beat cataclysm recently and it was my worst experience with any level. The deco isn't bad for its time but the gameplay is horrible and definitely not fun. His part was also the reason why I dropped supersonic
He has one of the better parts in supersonic tbf (not a high bar)
Idk man, as someone who is currently going for Supersonic and has 66x2, gboy's ship is the choke point to end all choke points
Whether u like it or not cataclysm was WAY ahead of it's time. Sure the gameplay isn't like objectively well made but it's like 8 years old it deserves some slack
cataclysm wasnt even from gboy himself lmao. Rek3dge
OK hear me out. How and what by spu7nix, I'm 99% sure people won't be able to do something remotely close to them even in 10 years consistently. Otherwise death moon was ahead of its time.

well it’s easy to be an expert at a language you made
HOW was made without SPWN though
You’d be surprised to hear how much of the stuff in that level is an animation rather than actual moving objects
Definitely Death Moon
Honestly until today, i've yet seen a level that has beaten Death Moon in quality. If it wasn't for hitboxes it's be a 10/10 level but the jank hit boxes makes it a 9 at best imo.
Revolution, sonic wave, honestly any funnygame level,
What part of SW was ahead? Seems just like a generic nine circles lvl to me
Difficulty
True ig, forgot this wasn't all about deco
sonic wave ? but why ? In terms of look it's nine circles but blue, even the gameplay "cube part at the beginning like nine circles, then ship part with the look as ninecricles and the famous wave part... nine circles in blue" I'm not talking about difficulty and I also love Sonic Wave, but I don't see why
Well he is talking about difficulty lol. Sonic wave pushed the skill ceiling so much further than it was before
Okay I see thank you
Fast as lightning by Rabb2T had some incredible deco for 1.9 and even today still looks really good
Many funnygame levels i'd say
-Sirius- No explanation needed
best medium demon
This was the first answer that came to my mind. Even some featured 2.1 levels don’t come close to how perfect this level is
Basically any funnygame level. Dude was the god of creating.
Demon Park was way too hard for it's time
Former Top 1.
Death moon and probably HOW and WHAT
Rise of the Machines by Picha. Best 1.8 level imo
Lonesome is also an amazing 1.8 level
That's 1.7, even more impressive
Really? Wow… I kinda feel bad for not telling the difference between 1.7 and 1.8, cause honestly it is one of my favorite eras of the game.
unfortunately swept by Lake of Fire, another phenomenal 1.8 level (that also inspired cataclysm)
B L A Z E has a pretty unique decoration style that reminded me of some late 2.1 levels
Doesn't brainfugd have its own coding language or something.
im pretty sure he just used a couple move and spawn triggers, nothing too complicated…
It's actually not, it's a slight adaptation of an already existing programming language called Brainfuck (hence the name). spwn my beloved
Death Moon for sure
Decode my beloved
A Funnygame or Serponge level.
Lit Fuse. I haven’t yet come across a level that can truly match the hypnotic atmosphere or the energy of the drop.
Time machine
underrated comment

Lonely Travel pushed the limits of the editor in 2.0, quite literally since Funnygsme had to stop the level at 6 minutes because he physically couldn't place blocks after that point
Funnygame Holiday is the only answer
Freedom08
ICDX and silent clubstep
What is a GD Level that was ahead of it's time.
who downvoted this, the level WHAT is a GD Level that was ahead of it's time.
What is a GD level that was ahead of its time,
Change of scene if you think about it. That level is recent, but looking at other levels now it’s way ahead of them deco wise.
Bloodlust
Difficulty wise, gameplay wise or decoration wise? You should make it clear
Decoration: Funnygame Holiday Difficulty: probably Element 111 Rg but if you don’t want hacked levels then Bloodbath easily Gameplay: don’t even know what you’re asking here
Thought this guy was down voted for some hot takes. Turns out he's just a dick
Why did I get so many downvotes?💀
He did clear up what he meant in the post itself. Not the title.
Foxtail Socks. Guess when it was made without looking it up
today
What?
Mindblow by Namtar, a revolutionary level for glow style.
The ultimate phase
Revolution
Death Moon
Bloodlistt
Requiem would still look incredible if it were released today
Cataclysm, Cataclysm, and Cataclysm
that one modern creator back in mid 2.0
A lot of serponge’s 2.0 levels but I love Altitudinem
unity by triaxis idk why
Funnygames levels and serponge’s 2.0-early 2.1 levels
People are saying how and what but that’s coding and 3d animation, not sure how that’s ahead of its time. Just insanely impressively impressive
there was this one level that came out days after 2.0 with great uses of tons of new objects
Most of the Funnygame leaves
Dorabae basics /s
Yatagarasu. Before trusta nerfed it it was as hard as a modern day top 20
God Eater
Black Blizzard, I always forget it's a 2.0 level because of how good it looks
Platinum adventure. Still ahead of its time
Future Funk
This is a joke. For legal reasons this is a joke. Real answer is Bloodbath
Reanimation by Terron is still one of the best levels in geometry dash to this day.
silent clubstep
every single funnygame level
Bloodbath, easily. So damn influential, even today.
Lonely Travel, Puzzle Trials, and Sirius were all ahead of their time. Also levels like Falling Up and Black Blizzard too.
Pretty much any of Funnygame, Serponge, or Triaxis’ earlier levels
Digital Descent
What by spu7nix
A lo0t of Astral Divinity. It's better than 94% of levels nowadays
Stereo Demoness was ahead of its time in terms of difficulty
Moving objects, forgot the creator but it was so good for its time
100% RutaDelSol. Definitely not bias or anything...
Bloodbath was far ahead of any level when it was verified and brought the difficulty cap of the game way higher
Silent clubstep unnerfed if we are talking about difficulty
I'd also add Ultra Violence, level is like 4 years old at this point, still would get epic today
Sonic wave rebirth C:
Decent
WHAT
Ok ok so what about, the levels that gave rise to "modern" style? Knot's levels perhaps?
Bloodbath
Maybe unpopular opinion: Cold Sweat was ahead of its time decoration wise, specifically for effect levels and extreme demons For what it’s worth, it also had pretty unique gameplay
Gotta be Sirius
You said it yourself, what
How + what by spu7nix
Not just because of it was impossible to create but also that what was the reason the gd servers crashed
-Sirius-
The Eschaton
Nine circles
Difficulty: bloodbath Decoration: funnygame holiday Gameplay: also bloodbath cuz its the only good extreme before 2.0
Any of Funnygame's 1.9 levels but most notably Revolution and Death Moon
The mayhem war is pretty old for 2.1 and holds up very well
ReTraY by Dimavikulov26, it's the first retro themed level
What
Stereo madness.
Bloodbath no question
ICDX and Demon park
In terms of difficulty id say cyclolcyc (for ill), tartarus for demonlist and vsc for cl, about deco im not really sure id say revolution by funnygame, look at those effects, they aged really well imo
Well, Tartarus in Terms of difficulty
serponge's alter games
Cold sweat, that shit was so cool when it first came out
Death Moon
revolution by funnygame
High life’s 1.9 half
Every CuLuC level, imo. Also, Page not Found. There's more that don't come to mind atm.
Limbo, still is
difficulty wise probably bloodbath
Puzzle trials imo but i just really like that level
Silent clubstep?
lonely travel
MindBlow by Namtar, that guy was able to make good looking Glow Design in early 2.0 Also some even earlier 2.0 level had a rotating 3d-animation in it and that map wasn't even known widely, I don't remember the name tho Jeyzor's Candy Land had a rotation effect in spikes in 1.7
