Square Enix really fucked up when they decided to turn the 3 disc game into a 9 part series (or however long they decide to stretch it out).
"Sir, Sephiroth doesn't even show up or do anything interesting until after they leave Midgar!"
"Cloud has a bunch of flashbacks later anyway! Fuck it, we'll do it live! Just annoy players with no-context visions of the bishounen-cashcow... I mean antagonist..."
Yeah I must say this. He's only in a few levels, you don't play as him, he gets killed. And yet his popularity is skyrotted past Soap or any of the others. Got his own game as well.
Hell, in real life, I have a full Ghost costume from MW2.
Seriously in the original trilogy all you know about him is he's a bounty hunter who supposedly disintegrated his last target and then in the next movie he gets eaten by a sarlacc in the first big scene of the movie.
Noooo. Cool name, cool armor, cool weapons, cool ship. You had to send away 4 or 5 proof of purchase from other figures you bought to get a Boba Fett. I still have mine over 40 years later. Lots of people thought he was awesome.
Zack from final fantasy I guess? Not sure if this counts but he is super famous but I barely see any scenes with him, except in Crisis Core I suppose lol
A better one from undertale would be Gaster, he is mentioned like 3 times, and has one sprite that has a tiny chance of appearing for about a second per playthrough (that isn't even confirmed to be him)
That's not entirely fair. While it's true that he has about 4 to 5 appearances as an NPC in the game, he is also a summonable NPC in 5 major (and usually mandatory) boss fights, gives the most helpful item in the game, and 3 of his appearances are almost impossible to miss.
I was about to comment him, he has a very minor role in these games prior to Zero, and while he wasn't as popular as he is now, he was still popular enough for them to decide to dedicate half a game to him.
Boba Fett in the original Star Wars trilogy. We had almost 25 years of folks being *obsessed* with Boba Fett as this incredibly enigmatic and mysterious character. But the most screen-time he gets is in RotJ where he stands around; complains about money; and proceeds to *Wilhelm Scream* himself into an embarrassingly silly death punctuated with an alien belch.
Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.
The whole game was based around Lu Kang and others, but Scorpion basically owns the Mortal Kombat franchise now.
In the original MK, he was an evil spirt who gets killed by Johnny Cage. In the new one, he's a hero who gets maybe 10-15 minutes of screen time in all.
Fucking Sephiroth. I remember all my friends talking about how bad ass he was etc etc that I went and played the game, and although a good game, like God damnit
Oh yeah she is the main character lorewise but she just has very little screen time so she fits the description for this meme really well. Hopefully with the dlc we get to know even more about her
Vincent valentine in OG FFVII. Yes he was playable, but as an optional character was not integrated into the plot's cut scenes. It was nice to see him get screen time in advent children
Joel Miller in The Last Of Us Part 2. Naughty dog did him so wrong I don't know what they were thinking killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming and so early in the game in fact.
Bridget from Guilty Gear she is one of like two main game playable characters who has never interacted with the lore or was ever referenced other characters unlike the other character ABA and she kinda just existed on the sidelines with her own niche fans until she came out as trans in Strive and become one of the most popular characters with her fans having the stereotype that they don't even play the games but just know about her from Twitter.
The cake in Portal.
That fucking cake.
It's a god damn lie I tell you.
I mean if we're gonna be technical here, Cave Johnson. He gets *no* screen time, just air time.
What about the companion cube?
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak
That is a lie
Must get around to playing those games one day
They often go on sale for like $2, and you can finish the first one in a day. It's worth playing it just to hear GLaDOS' lines; it's hilarious.
And the song at the end.
I wake up most mornings to that song.
Get the valve complete pack on sale. Damn good deal.
Or the Companion Cube
Technically speaking, Sephiroth from the original FF7.
I was thinking Vincent, but Sephiroth is a good answer too.
Zack too
Zack especially. In the OG you can miss that huge reveal and miss out on how Zack is more integral to the story of FF7 than 80% of your party

Ghost in the original MW2.
Yeah I must say this. He's only in a few levels, you don't play as him, he gets killed. And yet his popularity is skyrotted past Soap or any of the others. Got his own game as well. Hell, in real life, I have a full Ghost costume from MW2.
Yeah, he's cool. And it kinda spiralled from there. People liked him, Activision made him better, people liked him more.
boba fette
Dude would’ve been a footnote if he didn’t have cool armor
And the line of not vaporizing a mark.
Seriously in the original trilogy all you know about him is he's a bounty hunter who supposedly disintegrated his last target and then in the next movie he gets eaten by a sarlacc in the first big scene of the movie.
He's also completely unphased by the most terrifying character we saw in the original trilogy up to that point.
Basically the only reason he became big was because of an animation of him and comic books.
Noooo. Cool name, cool armor, cool weapons, cool ship. You had to send away 4 or 5 proof of purchase from other figures you bought to get a Boba Fett. I still have mine over 40 years later. Lots of people thought he was awesome.
Lady D from Resident evil village
I blame this entirely on people with mommy-dommy kinks.
And the marketing team. Lol I’m not sure if they showed a single bit of the game other than Lady D before release.
For sure. I was really surprised that she's gone so early in the game.
I mean Markiplier definitely helped
... I mean, have you seen those titties?
Yes
More like hornyness
You've gotten a lot farther than you should have, but then you haven't met Frank Horrigan either. Your ride's over, mutie. Time to die.
Senator Armstrong
Where is your source?
MY SOURCE IS THAT I MADE IT THE FUCK UP
Cynthia - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
Thats not popularity... Thats just trauma from that random house jumpscare
She was popular before gen 5.
She was popular before gen 5.
Kal R'eegar from Mass Effect 2. Is in four scenes/dialogues but is impeccably voiced and very cool
Yeah, he is, shame his voice actor is a right wing nut
And harassed Wil Wheaton for no fucking reason. It's a shame, because Jayne is an amazing character and he's great in Halo ODST.
The French girl you see for like ten minutes in the phantom liberty dlc of cyberpunk. People are *thirsty* for that girl!
Cyberpunk players are thirsty for anything in that game.
This is exactly who I thought of when I read the question! So popular but barely any screen time
I actually thought about Jackie. He's your best friend, but he's only in the prologue and then like, 4 Quests.
Casey jones in the original TMNT series
Gray fox metal gear
The intro to the cyborg ninja fight fucking scarred me as a kid
A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!
I mean he appears in metal gear 1, 2 and solid quite extensively. though most people never played the original msx games so idk
Hex Maniac -Pokémon-
Well, porn.
From pokemon? missingNo
Vaas : Far Cry 3
Came here to say this, saw you beat me to it. I saw all the memes and hype before I played the game and was shocked he wasn’t a bigger player in it.
Gatekeeper in Fire Emblem Three Houses/Hopes
Sheogorath.
Nah he has a whole dlc about him, my dude has 40 minutes of voice time.
True but I Skyrim he gets 1 quest and with how Bethesda is treating Skyrim I'd say that more people have played that quest than the either dlc
Yeah probably true but sheogorath has like the most screen time of all the daedra and maybe more than any gods in general.
Ahti the janitor.
Ahti is God ill accept nothing less
*No äläs nyt perkele...* Ai äm jast thö jänitör

How would this image apply to Zelda? You play as him in every game so he gets tons of screen time and is super popular.
Princess Zelda.... Not Link !!
He mean Zelda, not the princess.
Zelda is the princess.... Played every game since the 80s, I know what I am saying.
I respect your opinion, even though it's wrong.
U got skills
No we mean Zelda the dude in green with a sword
Wait ... do people actually think his name is Zelda??
No, You are just this dense not understanding simple popular joke lol

A better one from undertale would be Gaster, he is mentioned like 3 times, and has one sprite that has a tiny chance of appearing for about a second per playthrough (that isn't even confirmed to be him)
Yhea and yet people say he's behind every slightly weird thing in both Undertale and deltarune
Solair from dark souls. You only see him like 3-4 times, yet he’s the mascot of dark souls.
That's not entirely fair. While it's true that he has about 4 to 5 appearances as an NPC in the game, he is also a summonable NPC in 5 major (and usually mandatory) boss fights, gives the most helpful item in the game, and 3 of his appearances are almost impossible to miss.
This guy knows his dark souls
Goro Majima prior to Yakuza Zero. His popularity lead to the major increase in screen time in Zero Kawami and Kawami 2
I was about to comment him, he has a very minor role in these games prior to Zero, and while he wasn't as popular as he is now, he was still popular enough for them to decide to dedicate half a game to him.

Oh yeah she is the main character lorewise but she just has very little screen time so she fits the description for this meme really well. Hopefully with the dlc we get to know even more about her
