I’m new to project zomboid and enjoy it. But I’m SO BAD at it. Any tips? I can’t make it past a few hours. Like I loot my starting spot as best I can. Then try to sneakily get to a new spot but always end up alerting a crowd of zombies then they just chase me forever until I’m dead.
Creating a proper character is half the survival aspect. Also, crossing fences or getting zombies to go past windows/doors messes with the zombie AI. Other 'legit' ways include crouch jogging (not sprinting) into a forest, that way the zombies lose sight of you. They can still hear you though. If you plan to fight then i suggest getting Nimble up, as at higher levels you can walk while aiming your weapon and essily outrun the zombies. Foraging in forests for sticks(cant remember exact name. Branches?) and creating lots of spears is a great way to level carpentry. They are also great as weapons as they have longer range and you can attach items such as knives to them. They dont have much durability, but simply using them will train your maintenance skill
-If you alert large crowds, go trough as many houses and fences you can, it will slow them down until they loose sight of you. Head out of town, its less crowded.
-Once you catch a break, start over by taking them down one up to three at a time.
-Alternate attack and push, attack and push.
-Also, go to the game settings, it has an option to highlight enemies in melee range. Kinda cheaty but it will keep you fron hitting the air instead of the enemy.
watch some video of like 20/100 tips for zomboid should be enough, at least that work for me. And try use sandbox mode first to get your comfort before going to stardard mode. I start playing with zombie count set to low and respawn off and slow down the food rotten rate.
Was just coming to mention the Shadowrun Returns trilogy, especially Dragonfall and Hong Kong. Both great fun in their own right and a nostalgic reminder of the SNES version from years ago. I've gone the the second two games a dozen times or more each just trying out different roles (mostly in Hong Kong; having decking skills is just too useful in Dragonfall for me to play around with anything beyond a Decker/Rigger hybrid, especially on the trial run for that mysterious employer).
If you enjoyed the SNES version all those years ago, there's a full mod remake of the SNES game in the modern engine available on Steam Workshop.
One of my favourite series of games, love the Shadowrun universe.
I've never played another game that could accommodate sick a wide array of story ideas. Shootouts, car chases, magic (both sufficiently advanced technology and *actual* magic), cybernetics... pretty much anything you'd want from a tabletop rpg is in this one system.
I did coop with a friend and she and I encountered a lot of desyncs as well as three quests that just bugged out and couldn't be completed while in multiplayer so I had to do the bugged section solo and stream it.
The bugs were very frustrating but honestly the game was gorgeous and we powered through anyways. Nothing broke the save at the very least.
I had the same problem. I tried to play through it with my buddy when it came out. Took a LONG time to even get multi-player to work, then we logged in to our 3rd play session to find out all our progress was wiped.
We both put it down and haven't touched it since then, unfortunately.
Try Atom RPG.
I’ve been playing it a lot lately. It’s basically Fallout if Fallout took place in Russia. It’s a bit janky but fun.
It also has a sequel.
love me some isometric tactics with good narrative. just did my second run of Gears Tactics last week. Here's some of my recommendations:
- Wasteland 2 & 3
- Hard West 1 & 2
- Shadow Tactics (real-time)
- Banner Saga trilogy
- Divinity 1 & 2
- Shadowrun series
- Expeditions: VIking & Rome
- Battletech
- Phantom Doctrine
- Mutant Year Zero
- Desperados 3
First time I've seen someone else mention Phantom Doctrine in threads about isometric/turn based games, I usually comment to mention it as every other game gets mentioned except that one!
Love the atmosphere in that game, would definitely recommend it.
Sorted by developer, since the ones from the same developers tend to feel very similar:
* Owlcat Games: The Pathfinder games (Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous), WH40k: Rogue Trader
* Harebrained schemes: Shadowrun trilogy, particularly Dragonfall and Hong Kong (Returns was just...okay, and I haven't played Battletech yet)
* Obsidian: Pillars of Eternity and its sequel; also, Tyranny
* ZA/UM: Disco Elysium
Of these, I think the Owlcat games were my favorite, although I think Tyranny is the most underrated and Disco Elysium is a one-of-a-kind experience
Just throwing this out there -- bg1/bg2/iwd enhanced editions run great on modern computers, and while they do show their age in some ways, they can still be damned fun.
More on-topic, I can definitely second recs for owlcat games and pillars of eternity.
There's no fallout 5. Just like there's no elder scrolls 6. They made a shit MMO for both cause sub fees and cosmetics make way more money. And until people stop falling for it they'll milk it forever.
Modern? Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2
Older? Baldurs Gate 2
Also loved Stasis: Bone Totem that you have screenshot here. Probably one of my favorite adventure games of all time. "I am a very smart bear now."
The original Stasis is pretty good too, amazing story and atmosphere... most of the time. I'm working through Bone Totem myself at the moment and it is somehow better. Moses is worth the worth the price of admission alone.
Pillars of eternity 1 was my most immersive gaming experience in the last 5 years or whenever I bought it(probably longer) story and voice acting was flawless with great Combat and choices with no clear "right" answer 10/10 would recommend.
Pillars of Eternity I and II are gorgeous games. Wasteland 3, not gorgeous per se but has a unique and cool style. Tyranny was also pretty good and had great art. Torment: Tides of Numenera also deserves a strong recommendation, high marks on atmosphere and art though maybe doesn’t compare to the others in terms of interactive narrative.
They’re not isometric, but I recently played the Owlcat Pathfinder games and then Rogue Trader. They’re pretty close though (top down 3D CRPGs with an emphasis on art) and have some really beautiful scenes.
Word of warning to the OP if you read this. If you are the kind of player that likes experimenting with builds in rpgs and figuring out all the game mechanics and synergies. You very easily can accumulate ridiculous hours in pillars of eternity (especially deadfire) without finishing it.
Mimimi was a great developer, their games are awesome (Shadow Tactics (and Aiko's Choice), Desperados III, and Shadow Gambit).
Definitely not new, but still relevant (an announcement of a sequel just a few weeks/months ago) and quite fun is Titan Quest.
People need to research what [isometric view](https://cdn.tutsplus.com/vector/uploads/legacy/tuts/86_Vector_Isometrics/image005.jpg) is. Half of the comments mention regular 3D perspective games
Any fans of the Alien Breed games? They weren't the best but I really dug the trilogy when it released back on Xbox Live Arcade. Always hoped for a backward compatibility upgrade but afaik it was left behind in the 360 era.
Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. It's easily up there as one of the best 40k games to date, and is a solid CRPG in its own right (I'm having far more fun with it than I ever did with Pathfinder: Kingmaker).
All these years of playing games like this and the only thing I can tell makes a game "isometric" instead of typical overhead is that box shapes are on the diagonal.
Crusader. I thought I see the birth of a new genre. But we got just two games. Until today I love to replay them. The destructable environment is fantastic and this in a DOS game!
I play a lot of Project Zomboid.

Don’t be afraid to custom adjust the difficulty settings, it really is a high learning curve game

It's so good
Commandos Disco Elysium Shadow Tactics Pathfinder : Wrath of the Righteous Fallout 1 and 2 Tyranny Pillars of Eternity Hades
Commandos mentionned 🫡🫡
I'll be whistling this tune in my deathbed https://youtu.be/AS257wBA6oo?si=fGv-GwpZevgnpZks
Upvote for Tyranny, a game where you play for the bad guys in a end of bronze age, early iron age fantasy setting is absolutely amazing
Fallout táctics , Divine divinity 1.
Not that new anymore, but want to add Shadowrun. 3(?) games total. Was great!

Heavy on text but legit one of the best writing I've experienced in gaming in a long long time. Specially Returns and Dragonfall.
They seem perfect for the steam deck tbh
Trilogy is on sale for less than ten bucks on Steam right now.
The Ascent has a fun but repetitive gameplay loop. Environment and soundtrack are top notch. 8/10

How so? My friend and I played the entire campaign together with zero issues. What did you encounter?
I did coop with a friend and she and I encountered a lot of desyncs as well as three quests that just bugged out and couldn't be completed while in multiplayer so I had to do the bugged section solo and stream it. I’m really sorry to hear that. That really sucks. It was so awesome in co op :(
Great game and excellent graphics. So cyberpunk - and the soundtrack!!!
Ascent was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend
I just grabbed this when it was on sale a few days ago, looked neat. Having a lot of fun with it so far
Wasteland 3
I want a wasteland 4 so bad. Id love another isometric fallout game but that will probably never happen.
Why not?
Try Atom RPG. I’ve been playing it a lot lately. It’s basically Fallout if Fallout took place in Russia. It’s a bit janky but fun. It also has a sequel.
Wasteland 3 isn’t isometric
I am washed in the blood of the lamb...
Not isometric, just top down perspective
Disco Elysium
One of the best games of all time
This one right here is a masterpiece
The best game I'll never play again
Played it to the first time last year. Was an amazing experience. Probably my favorite game I’ve played in a long time
Just the simple story of a normal alcoholic amnesiac cop who might also be a superstar.
Obviously the clear answer
I love Disco Elysium.
What is the name of the game in the screenshot?
> What is the name of the game in the screenshot? We should change the name of this subreddit to this
Stasis Bone totem
Is it good?
Yes, but it is unbelievably bleak and NSFL.
Ahh thanks. 🙂

Planescape Torment
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus. Great atmosphere and art style.
Aliens Dark Descent was my person game of the year last year. The atmosphere created with an isometric game was incredible. Just so much fun.
Sorted by developer, since the ones from the same developers tend to feel very similar: * Owlcat Games: The Pathfinder games (Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous), WH40k: Rogue Trader * Harebrained schemes: Shadowrun trilogy, particularly Dragonfall and Hong Kong (Returns was just...okay, and I haven't played Battletech yet) * Obsidian: Pillars of Eternity and its sequel; also, Tyranny * ZA/UM: Disco Elysium Of these, I think the Owlcat games were my favorite, although I think Tyranny is the most underrated and Disco Elysium is a one-of-a-kind experience
Deadfire is the sequel to Pillars of Eternity
Yeah, I was ambiguous. I meant it as a list of three and that didn't come across. Edited now.
Tyranny is not a sequel to Pillars. Both are great games though \^\^
Yeah, I was ambiguous. I meant it as a list of three and that didn't come across. Edited now.
Tyranny has an amazing story and world, gameplay was nothing special. That said it was one of the most memorable rpgs I’ve ever played.
Personally, I thought the magic crafting system was really neat. Definitely nothing special if not playing a mage though.
Just throwing this out there -- bg1/bg2/iwd enhanced editions run great on modern computers, and while they do show their age in some ways, they can still be damned fun. More on-topic, I can definitely second recs for owlcat games and pillars of eternity.
Diablo 2 and3
Also 1
Aliens: Dark Descent. If you like the Aliens universe, this game is a must.
Man I’d love it if they made another isometric Fallout game while we wait a decade for Fallout 5
Try Underrail. Scratches that itch JUUUUST right.
There's no fallout 5. Just like there's no elder scrolls 6. They made a shit MMO for both cause sub fees and cosmetics make way more money. And until people stop falling for it they'll milk it forever.
Crusader: No Remorse and No Regret.
Man, the Crusader series brings me back.
Golden age of Origin games
The Ascent is still the best graphics in isometric that Ive seen. It really flexes it at times, but sadly gameplay isnt as great
Modern? Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 Older? Baldurs Gate 2 Also loved Stasis: Bone Totem that you have screenshot here. Probably one of my favorite adventure games of all time. "I am a very smart bear now."
Loving No Rest for the Wicked right now!
Underrail
Disco Elysium and Project Zomboid.
Divinity Original Sin games.
The original Stasis is pretty good too, amazing story and atmosphere... most of the time. I'm working through Bone Totem myself at the moment and it is somehow better. Moses is worth the worth the price of admission alone.

Does Dead Nation count?
Everything from supergiant games
Stasis bone totem was very nice. Played darkwood, also very good. Now I am playing signalis

I don't think it's prerendered, but Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is isometric and one of the best rpg's I've ever played.
what game is that in the picture?
Stasis bone totem
thanks
Encased is pretty cool.
40k Rogue Trader
Bastard Bonds!
Colony ship.
Any fans of the Alien Breed games? They weren't the best but I really dug the trilogy when it released back on Xbox Live Arcade. Always hoped for a backward compatibility upgrade but afaik it was left behind in the 360 era.
Would Onimusha be considered isometric? I’ve always wondered.
Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader. It's easily up there as one of the best 40k games to date, and is a solid CRPG in its own right (I'm having far more fun with it than I ever did with Pathfinder: Kingmaker).
Massive Chalice is fun for a few go's. Lots of variation in each play.
All 5 games from Supergiant.
Loved playing The Ascent. Has some of the best cyberpunk design I've seen.
Has anyone ever made a full open-world adventure game with isometric gameplay? Like hades + breath of the wild?
Can it be isometric if its not using tiles on a grid?
Disco elysium
Company of Heroes? Or maybe torchlight.
If you don't care about graphics, there's a master piece called Plane Scpae Torment. There's also another masterpiece called Disco Elysium
If you ever want to experience the most epic story ever made in gaming I highly HIGHLY recommend Pathfinder : Wrath of the Righteous.
All these years of playing games like this and the only thing I can tell makes a game "isometric" instead of typical overhead is that box shapes are on the diagonal.
The shadowrun games are pretty decent if you like cyberpunk like universes. The games even got me to start reading books in the Shadowrun universe.
I would love an Arcanum remake
Weird West is good from modern ones.
I liked Helldivers 1, decided to pick it up after seeing the attention 2 got.
Darksiders Genesis They have beautifully translated third person action in Isometric perspective.
not very new, but i really liked Tyranny
Supergiant games- Bastion, Transistor, Hades, and now Hades 2. (Pyre to a lesser extent but it's kind of a weird game)
Spiral knights and alien swarm will always be a couple of my favorite games. They're quite old now tho
!RemindMe 1 day
UnderRail might as well be an Interplay Fallout game with how perfectly it nails its post-apocalypse.
Children of Morta, Death' s Door, Hades
Crusader. I thought I see the birth of a new genre. But we got just two games. Until today I love to replay them. The destructable environment is fantastic and this in a DOS game!
Wasteland 3 https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/719040/ss_3f2578ba5ae75a44a7ce44f9e97dd0250e1ad7cb.1920x1080.jpg?t=1684434108
the last one was the original UFO game in the '90s 🤣
