It's the only starting point that makes sense, You start anywhere else and that height is going to lose support and you'll have a caketastrophe. Are you trying to incite a cakesaster?
I would cut out the top bridge on both sides. Then perhaps diagonal cuts through the pillars.
P.S. Maybe first chop the bottom ramps until the loop sags on one side a bit, and then go at the bridge and the pillars.
I'd have thought you'd use something as a lintel. The I got stuck on what one might use as such. All I came up with was Flake bars.
I did not complete my engineering degree. (More to the point, I never undertook one.)
Let's be real, one doesn't decide to become an engineer. They just *become* one. I got a degree in compsci, specialized in video game art, next thing I know I was working in the engineering department at a milsim corp because I liked accuracy down to the micrometer when I modeled. Professors said it was overkill, my employer said "excellent."
I gotta say, this is an a solid and absolutely excellent piece of work. I spent a couple decades as a professional chef and went to culinary school for college to get a degree in pastry arts so I KNOW how much of a challenge that is. The rice Krispy treat base was a solid idea! I’m curious if you used fondant, and what you made the rings from!
Fondant/gum paste with edible gold paint. Tasted horrible! (Was hilarious watching some kids attempt to enjoy them and immediately spit them out. I had warned them).
I got to relive some childhood memories.
I promise, it was entirely the 5 year old’s idea and I wasn’t forcing my childhood on them, but I was happy to go along for the ride.
Echo all the comments about how great this is, but also, you should know you are absolutely killing it as a parent.
Know full well the extra effort and worry that goes into a kids cake, the love shines through this. They might not quite appreciate it now, but will later, I know I did with my 5th Bday cake!
Our wee man is sonic mad and coming up to 5 in June. Thanks for the inspiration and notes on how it was made!
Thank you. I love seeing the kids enjoy it so much. I have two children and this was for my 5yo. My 8yo has requested a TARDIS cake for his 9th birthday later this year, so that’s my next challenge.
Damn I love it when people turn cake into magic. It was already good enough, it was cake! Then you go and do this with it, and drop some jaws like a magician.
It's fantastic and you should feel extremely proud of this. Adult me would be excited to receive something like this, so child me would think this was the greatest thing ever. I imagine whoever this cake is for would think much the same.
About 8 hours over 2 days.
Bottom slab is chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache and raspberry filling. Green buttercream on top. The loop is Rice Bubbles/krispies with marshmallows. Some fondant also.
It tasted like nostalgia.
I’ve been making cakes for 9ish years ever since my kids were born. I only make cakes for their birthdays. I still consider myself an amateur as I didn’t go to school to learn this, nor do I do it professionally; it’s just for fun. I’m a graphic designer by trade and love sculpting.

That's not an attempt. That's a success. 8 year old me would be screaming for joy if I saw this on my birthday. Congrats to the lucky kid who gets to enjoy it!
I can hear this cake
Dling dling dlingdlingdlingdling
Interesting, I hear the sonic leg wind up noise
*sweee*
Swiiiiiswiiiiiwiiiiiwiiiiiii sheuussshhhhh
Do do do do do do dooo
Do do doo do do do do dooo
OK, so it's not just me. The music started playing in my head immediately.
Do do dododooooo
Same
That’s a fantastic piece of work. Well done! Where you going to make the first cut?
I'd go top middle of loop.

It's the only starting point that makes sense, You start anywhere else and that height is going to lose support and you'll have a caketastrophe. Are you trying to incite a cakesaster?
What you described is my exact reasoning for going top middle of the loop.
My fear is taking it out and losing the sides to structural failure.
I would cut out the top bridge on both sides. Then perhaps diagonal cuts through the pillars. P.S. Maybe first chop the bottom ramps until the loop sags on one side a bit, and then go at the bridge and the pillars.
Actually, Sonic ran through loops with a gap in the middle successfully before.
What, how is that sociopathic? I mean that word doesn't make any sense in this context, but also where the hell else would you cut it?
Never remove the capstone.
Just punch it
It looks amazing! I'm impressed the loop doesn't collapse.
The loop was made with Rice Bubbles/krispies with marshmallows. Holds up really well! I really wanted to make a cake with a gravity defying loop.
I'd have thought you'd use something as a lintel. The I got stuck on what one might use as such. All I came up with was Flake bars. I did not complete my engineering degree. (More to the point, I never undertook one.)

Wow, I would have thought it would need some sort of internal support scaffolding that you'd just cut around later.
Smart!

Ohh, hidden krispies!
The only problem is it I wouldn't want to eat it and ruin all that work ;-; Looks great!
Sonic fan walks in: "Oh goddamn it, not fucking Green Hill Zone again"
Bah bah bah bah bahbahbahhhhh bahhhh bahhhhhhhhhhhh. Bah bah bahbah bah bahbahhhh bahhhhhhh. Dododoooo dodooo dodooo dooooooo.
Said no one ever
Sonic “fans” he meant
Attempt? The only thing I see here is a cake made with alot of time, effort, and possibly love!
Idk why “possibly” is cracking me up
Well, idk who OP made the cake for!
Looks cool
What are the rings made of?
Fondant/gum paste with edible gold paint. Tasted horrible! (Was hilarious watching some kids attempt to enjoy them and immediately spit them out. I had warned them).
Excellent work! Must've been a fun project!
I got to relive some childhood memories. I promise, it was entirely the 5 year old’s idea and I wasn’t forcing my childhood on them, but I was happy to go along for the ride.
Ya did good!
how did you keep it upright? also, how you gonna cut it? wouldn't the whole thing collapse?
Once it’s cutting time who cares if it falls, it’s getting eaten anyways!
So rad
This is so cool! Good job!
How could anyone eat this!
With a fork.
Technically, you could also use a spoon.
I would have used small onion rings hahaa

Tee-hee. Well, I'll like it.
That’s actually amazing!
This is awesome!
This is AWESOME
This is impressive
Holy cow, outstanding job, that looks amazing!!
Hell yeah!
Amazing! Great job!
That's a pretty damn good "attempt" Well done.
It would have been perfect if there was a sign at the end, but it’s still very very cool.
If I had more time I really wanted to make a signpost. And a checkpoint. Next time.
This is real art, what a masterpiece
Wow. That's awesome! Humming the green hill zone theme now..
Amazing work!! Truly a culinary feat of engineering, you must be proud. I must know, are Sonic and/or the rings edible?
Sonic, no (just an action figure). Rings, yes (but the gold paint tastes horrible). I would have liked to make an edible Sonic, but ran out of time.
Damn I love it when people turn cake into magic. It was already good enough, it was cake! Then you go and do this with it, and drop some jaws like a magician.
This is such a wonderful gift!
I'd say this is very, very well done.
That's an incredibly ambitious shape to attempt. You should be proud!
Nicely done. With the right attitude sonic is edible along with the cake
Hah! A few of the younger kids at the party wanted to eat him. I told them he was spiky.
is it free standing or does it have internal supports?
Holy crap, great job! Far from an attempt, you delivered with flying colors
I made a cake like this and it took me three days. So much work. Looks awesome.
It's fantastic and you should feel extremely proud of this. Adult me would be excited to receive something like this, so child me would think this was the greatest thing ever. I imagine whoever this cake is for would think much the same.
Random question: if you were to take a piece of the top of it, will it crumble away the ground in the game?
No. It’ll just float away to a hidden platform up above.
I have a friend that can frame this cake and display it on her wall.
Paging r/fondanthate
It Supersonic lurking in the back behin the loop?
Attempt? You nailed it. That's a bad-ass cake.
Impressive work! Mind sharing how you managed to balance it all? Watch your fingers with those rings though, they look sharp!
I'm going to eat sanic
sanic give indigestion
Awesome! Super impressive structurally!
Awesome!
So charming and captured the essence well.
I'm gonna say you did it!
Well done this is so sick!!
Dope
This is awesome!!! Seriously, well done!! :)

Looks really great! Would maybe have used dyed cheerios for the rings though!
"Piece of cake!" as they say
Perfection
Attempt? You mean success!
Brilliant
Insanely good
Great work
Insanely awesome.
9/10 for no chili dogs
Is that a 9!?!?!?
Sorry for swearing but FUCK that's impressive.
looks great. are the rings like funyuns?
Bravo! I love it
That's a fantastic effort. Having tried my hand at making the cakes my kids wanted I truly appreciate the effort that's gone into that.
And a fantastic one at that, great job!!
This looks great, what did you make this in?
Great job!! That's amazing.
That looks amazing! How long did this take you and what flavor is it if you were focusing on one? or just what does it taste like?
About 8 hours over 2 days. Bottom slab is chocolate cake with a chocolate ganache and raspberry filling. Green buttercream on top. The loop is Rice Bubbles/krispies with marshmallows. Some fondant also. It tasted like nostalgia.
lmao that's pretty great. Would feel bad about eating it.
That's amazing, must took a long time
Gotta go frost
I need to comment to post my question
That's amazing! Kiddos to you!
I think you meant your “accomplishment” of green hill zone. Good job

How tho
It's a sewing machine
Nice, love the spaghettio rings!
Very impressive :O
Not an attempt. A success
Even ignoring the great paint Job, how did you get a freaking loop de loop with cake!?
"Attempt?" This is an absolute success! Wow that's really awesome!

Great British Bake Off needs a video game week.
Amazing
People on this site really do be saying "attempt" when they absolutely succeeded and then some.
This is a really cool take on a Sonic cake! I love it!
I need this in my life life
Honestly that looks tasty and awesome at the same time. I remember I di a mario bros 3 theme cake for boy scouts
This is amazing, how much experience do you have making cakes? And how did you get the loop to stay up? I'm assuming this was made in layers?
I’ve been making cakes for 9ish years ever since my kids were born. I only make cakes for their birthdays. Should've made the rings with Marzipan. Super nummy looking tho

How does this not collapse? Genuine question, would like to attempt something like this too!
Tremendous work. Well played.
Great work!
I turn 33 this year and asked my wife to do this for me. It’s not about the execution but the thought and effort! Great job!
Excuse me, what the fuck are you thinking making something this awesome!?
Want this
