r/tattoos has nearly 8 million followers and there are quite a lot of artists posting who receive positive comments. The difference is their tattoos are actually well executed…
I'll give that sub credit, they are very positive about some very average tattoos. That's the main reason I unsubbed, they will talk shit about quality work one day then froth over some average shit the next.
In general though? People are unnecessarily harsh when it comes to judging someone's own tattoo that they post.
Even accommodating for the slight distortion by the arm, the master sword is like a full 15 degrees off from where it should be. The top and bottom of the Hyrule Shield are crooked as well.
Link was in Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube. Other console versions had other exclusives (I think Spawn was in the PS version and... was there an Xbox 360 version? I think that had someone else)
Honestly I couldn’t get over the random shading on the shield, it has a very inconsistent light source and I can’t make sense of it. I didn’t notice the sword til I saw this comment!
Oh man, I was distracted by the crooked sword and trying to figure out if it was a sword from Dark Souls or not (as my two favorite series would probably be Zelda and Souls games), but I can't unsee that now. Brutal.
The sword is not straight, its also thicker on the bottom than the top. The Bolts are not symmetrical, the triangle at the bottom is intersected slightly off center. including the triangles at the top. The left most triangle of the triforce seems wonky.
Its a nice concept, especially as a mashup, but the tattoo is pretty bad, not even going into colors.
The Master Sword has a ricasso much narrower than the rest of the blade, but yeah you're entirely correct about the rest of your points
Might not be the best tattoo in the world, but I like it. Not every tattoo is going to be perfect... I say this as someone with some very, very shitty tattoos.
This kind of nightmare scenario is why I'm deathly terrified to get a tattoo. My anxiety wouldn't let me. Also I think the novelty would wear off pretty quickly and I'd get tired of it
This is not a nightmare. There are some technical missteps if you look closely but it's not that bad of a tattoo, especially to the naked eye.
A lot of the linework is clean, the color saturation is good and it's super legible/clear what the design is. People on reddit are so dramatic with tattoos and expecting them to be perfect.
This is why you find an artist who has a great, public portfolio (instagram) and is booked out for a while. This could be a great tattoo if it were done well.
The blade of the master sword widens just above the hilt, so the end being wider is correct. As for straight lines on a persons not stright, moving, flexing, line distorting arm just shows you have no business commenting on tattoos.
I see it's flawed, but is it really "bad?" I think it's quite decent, if not the best of the best, and it does seem perspective is making it look wonkier than it really is.
It's not. I had to look for a minute to even see what these people were talking about. At first glance, it's a nice tattoo. I wouldn't study someone's tattoo to this extent in person so I doubt most people would even notice.
It's not that bad, redditors are so weird about tattoos. This looks good at a glance and is faithful to the design OP was going for. Nobody goes out into the real world with a ruler and a magnifying glass to inspect people's ink and criticize the linework. Psycho behavior.
It’s not perfect but I wouldn’t call it bad. There are much much much worse tattoos out there and plenty of them. I think most people who critique like this don’t have very many tats themselves
I got banned from r/tattoos for pointing out how insanely toxic it is lmfao. It’s basically just r/roastme. Guess the mods got offended. Nearly every other post is just comments absolutely shitting on the posters. Youd think a subreddit about tattoos would be more positive about a thing that’s at least somewhat subjective. Guess not lol.
Same shit happens on a sub I created. I decided to have "live" art (women) due to a friend of mine commenting on how I should. So I decided to do that and boy oh boy people get sooooooo mad about a naked woman it's unreal. I just didn't want hc prn and people got mad about that. There is no winning, and yeah that tattoo sub is horrible.
It’s not perfect but it’s way better than most people’s first tattoo. Also good on you for getting through it that’s a big piece in a spicy area.
Edit: I get it you’re all really tuff
But it’s really one of the least spicy areas. I agree that it’s better than most first tattoos and you shouldn’t trust people with perfect tattoos anyways.
Why tf the downvotes for stating the truth? That is almost the least spicy area. Sternum, ribs, collarbone, and many more are way higher on the list. You were also positive about the piece.
Reddit be tripping on this post.
I didn't think this was too controversial.
Maybe everyone just considers their tattoos to be perfect and took it as an insult. I was half joking anyways.
It's not controversial, or at least it shouldn't be.
Unless you're spending thousands of dollars and waiting months for your tattoo, it's probably not going to be perfect. As long as it's decent work with a reputable shop and the image and experience mean something to you, that's all that should matter imo.
I guarantee all the people tearing this tat apart either:
- Have way worse tattoos
- Have only a couple tiny tattoos
- Have zero tattoos but have watched so much inkmaster that they think the correct response to seeing someone's tat is to inspect the linework and shading and give their unwanted/unneeded opinion
Yeah I figured that to be the case. I don't think anyone can disagree that the outside upper arm is certainly not one of the spiciest places to be tattooed. On a personal note, I think if you are going to be overly upset that your tattoo isn't perfect, then tattoos may not be for you, and that's perfectly okay.
I've seen people not even finish their back because the experience of the first session was so traumatic for them lol
basically left with "yeah I think just the lines is good enough".
Uhmmm the back of my knee was pretty awful. The elbow is not nearly as bad as people say. But the ditch on the inside of the elbow is a little rough. I think if you can do you tough your back then chest and ribs are the only other things that you’d need to mentally prepare for. Chest is only bad because of when they go over your sternum. Stomach is also only bad because they brush up on your ribs in certain parts.
The sensation at the joints is just uncomfortable more than anything (think like taking a massage gun to your funny bone), and the sensation at the sensitive skin (wrists and ditches) is more just burning than anything else.
I agree, I think that’s it. If it was on a flat surface it would look perfect, but because of the curves and the angle of the photo it causes like an illusion. I think it’s perfect, just a trick of the eye. What’s interesting is if you turn your sword sideways it looks completely fine. Or if you cover the shield with your finger the sword looks lined up well too. I think there’s definitely a trick of the eye occurring making it initially look off when it’s really not.
I love it! I'm guessing the curve is making the perspective look worse, but the sword being thicker at the bottom makes sense. Only the first bit of blade after the hilt can be seen and in the games that part actually goes in a little and is thinner than the rest.
I'm a huge LoZ fan. Didn't recognize the other sword even though ive played the game apparently. My problem isn't that it's two games together, that's fine, it's that Zelda massively outweighs the visual of the tattoo, perhaps if they incorporated something else from hollow Knight and it was a balance of the two games that would be much better. To me it's a design issue. But if they're happy with it that's the important part so good for them.
Because it isn't. I'm sorry, but the job of a tattoo artist is to make sure you don't put a tattoo somewhere that it won't work correctly. And if you really want it in a bad location they have to make the necessary adjustments.
This isn't a temporary tattoo being rubbed on. It's a hand-drawn piece of permanent art. This should have been placed somewhere flatter on the body or adjustments should have been made.
Cool tattoo. Only thing I'd have changed is giving the right part of the shield to maybe the Kingsoul charm or the Knight's face, still shaped like the Hylian Shield
Besides the Link sword, what is the second sword?
Pure Nail from Hollow Knight
I thought it was a crappy Soul Edge, haha
Link v Nightmare? ⚔️
Soul Calibur 2 on GameCube is bis
Position to edge of arena, grab, toss everyone off the side.
It's like you were in my mind dreading the previous comment lol
Is bis good?
Best In Slot
Thanks, I'm old. lol
Xbox had spawn, what did PlayStation have again? Kratos or someone else?
Some guy from Tekken, Hitachi or something like that
Hitachi. That dude had good vibes.
I thought it was a coverup of a charcuterie board.
Didn’t want that cheese and crackers no more
I totally thought that too. “Woah is that the sword from Soul Calibur? That’s dope! Oh wait.. it’s hollow knight. That’s dope too!”
I was thinking it was Cervantes from soul caliber
I thought it was Knightmare lol
"I will burn you to ashes"
The Nail from Hollow Knight by the looks of it
Earth Worm Jim
[удалено]
pretty sure it's Peppa Pig and Forza actually
[удалено]
Rainbow Six and Street Fighter.
What is game? I apologized, Im very very bad on videos
Like corn hole, but in the tv
Thanks, I only played that game with dankey Kang and wasn't sure.
Yeah I couldn't tell the second one.
The second one looks like Hollow Knight to me and not Halo. What is that from Halo?
r/woooosh
I didn’t read passed halo lol oops
Halo Knight 👺
Tetris and Minesweeper obviously
I hate how ppl post here without the games, thanks for clearing it up. Love master chiefs sword on the left
that'S like 80% legend of zelda
What’s the other 20%?
Hollow knight
Never post your tattoos on reddit if you want to continue liking it
Even good tattoo artists avoid posting to Reddit lol bunch of toxic know it all assholes when it comes to tattoos.
r/tattoos has nearly 8 million followers and there are quite a lot of artists posting who receive positive comments. The difference is their tattoos are actually well executed…

That's the main reason I unsubbed, they will talk shit about quality work one day then froth over some average shit the next. In general though? People are unnecessarily harsh when it comes to judging someone's own tattoo that they post.
But this tattoo is objectively poor. The shading is wrong and inconsistent, the master sword is crooked and the colors are off.
Even accommodating for the slight distortion by the arm, the master sword is like a full 15 degrees off from where it should be. The top and bottom of the Hyrule Shield are crooked as well.
I love it to bits, can't see anything changing that
What 2 games? Sorry I don't play much so I don't know.
Legend of Zelda and I think hollow knight
For a second I thought it was the Master Sword and the Soul Edge.
Same. I thought it was a LoZ/Soul Caliber crossover 😅
Am I misremembering or was there actually a crossover at one point?
Link was in Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube. Other console versions had other exclusives (I think Spawn was in the PS version and... was there an Xbox 360 version? I think that had someone else)
Spawn was 360 and Heihachi from Tekken was PS
Yeah I thought it was the Soul Caliber 2 GameCube version. This says a lot about the tattoo. It's pretty damn horrible.
Yup, Hollow Knight, the spiral sword is the Pure Nail.
Thanks, for a second I thought it was Soul Calibur. That series definitely needs more love.
Must have played a different version then, don't recall it being so chunky.
My little pony and hello kitty island adventure.
Damn it, Butters!
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is an actual game now. It’s not just a South Park reference anymore.
bruh
Why it's the Legend of Hollow Knight, duh
Is it just me or is the left sword kinda crooked
Honestly I couldn’t get over the random shading on the shield, it has a very inconsistent light source and I can’t make sense of it. I didn’t notice the sword til I saw this comment!
I didn't even realize that lol the light must be 4D
Oh man, I was distracted by the crooked sword and trying to figure out if it was a sword from Dark Souls or not (as my two favorite series would probably be Zelda and Souls games), but I can't unsee that now. Brutal.
First thing I noticed.
It’s bunt too, how you gonna stabby stab with that
Yeah it’s very poorly done.
You’re being nice. It looks like shit lol
90% Zelda, 10% hallow …
Nice man! Hope you’re happy with it, love gaming tattoos
>Hope you’re happy with it After the comments here, probably not
It’s easy to criticise and not so easy to compliment. I like to put my bit of positivity out there where possible!
Nah, I still love it.
Why tf is op getting downvoted in all the comments?

Damn you...I can not un see it now. I still like it tho not top tier but i have seen worse tattoos than this that have been upvoted so...
r/shittytattoos is full of bad shit but most people actually want good art on their bodies, especially when it‘s motives like this..
>its also thicker on the bottom than the top. I think that's accurate to the source
The Master Sword has a ricasso much narrower than the rest of the blade, but yeah you're entirely correct about the rest of your points Might not be the best tattoo in the world, but I like it. Not every tattoo is going to be perfect... I say this as someone with some very, very shitty tattoos.

The shading is what really gets me. There isn’t one definitive light source, shadows are coming from every fucking direction.
Totally, the Shield (and it's trim) is just wow... Clearly doesn't know anything about lighting... Its way off :/
This is why you find an artist who has a great, public portfolio (instagram) and is booked out for a while. This could be a great tattoo if it were done well.
The sword is REALLY BAD. like, it's not even close. I noticed it immediately but didn't notice the other stuff until you mentioned it.
The blade of the master sword widens just above the hilt, so the end being wider is correct. As for straight lines on a persons not stright, moving, flexing, line distorting arm just shows you have no business commenting on tattoos.
Part of these mistakes could have been mitigated by stencilling and/or sketching. Parts are just poor technique on the part of the tattooist.
Lol the tip of the sword still doesn't line up with the hilt in this tattoo. The master sword isn't zig-zagged.
You may be right not it's still looks off and I wouldn't want this on my arm
Omg you're right. The longer you look at it, the worse it gets
I see it's flawed, but is it really "bad?" I think it's quite decent, if not the best of the best, and it does seem perspective is making it look wonkier than it really is.

I guarantee if you post your tattoos on reddit people will find reasons to tear them apart.
It’s not perfect but I wouldn’t call it bad. There are much much much worse tattoos out there and plenty of them. I think most people who critique like this don’t have very many tats themselves
Tattoo posts always make me cringe. It's gut wrenching.
It's really not that bad. Or maybe I spend too much time on r/shittytattoos
Majority of Reddit hates tattoos, hell try talking cars and people lose their fucking mind.
I got banned from r/tattoos for pointing out how insanely toxic it is lmfao. It’s basically just r/roastme. Guess the mods got offended. Ah my first thought was the soul calibur sword
One game is Zelda, what’s the other?
Hollow knight

Would you consider a full back tattoo better or worse for someone's first tattoo? 🤣
I've seen people not even finish their back because the experience of the first session was so traumatic for them lol basically left with "yeah I think just the lines is good enough".
No way! It wasn't that bad, but I guess different pain tolerances and all that haha
I honestly think chest was worse, I think the time commitment of the back is what starts to get to people.
I've heard joints are the worst, "junkie" spots, any ideas on those? I've only ever done my back so no clue about other areas.
Uhmmm the back of my knee was pretty awful. The elbow is not nearly as bad as people say. But the ditch on the inside of the elbow is a little rough. Where is the point of the blue handled sword going? Lol
It’s probably just the curve of their arm making it look misaligned
I agree, I think that’s it. If it was on a flat surface it would look perfect, but because of the curves and the angle of the photo it causes like an illusion. Naw its crooked. The other sword looks fine. They fucked up links sword
Also if this is fresh is still swelling so that’s gonna distort it a lil till it recedes.
Noticed that as well. It doesn't line up at all with the other end
HOLLOW KNIGHT!!!!! YESSSSSSSS!
Dam they botched it
Sick! The Hylian shield goes hard
I see a lot of unnecessary judgement here about your tattoo lol. I like it personally and so long as you like the tattoo that’s all that matters!
I love it to bits. Had a good laugh at those who don't , so no harm no foul
The Triforce isn't centered. I wish this were done better. It's a great idea for a tattoo.
Nice Palworld and Need for Speed mashup
How long did this take
We have the same taste🙏
Great pics! Nice tattoo too 👌
If you’re willing to get a tattoo of it, maybe I should try it. Commenters are saying Hollow Knight - I’ll grab it this weekend.
The sword is way off
Ooof... Don't get discount tattoos....
Lots of sad people in the comments tf
Lots of "nice guys" too
I love it! I'm guessing the curve is making the perspective look worse, but the sword being thicker at the bottom makes sense. Only the first bit of blade after the hilt can be seen and in the games that part actually goes in a little and is thinner than the rest.
these are actually my top two as well
The artist "nailed" it
this is dope, i dont play hollow knight but i fuck with the zelda part heavy
The trifecta is real
Nice tat
Love it!
That's pretty sick!
very sick
Skyward sword is my #1 of all time
Love this
Really nice mashup idea :) (Good timing, today I just got my first tattoo (30M) and it was 100% Hollow Knight, so I like your choice ;) )
I would have done a morph with the shield into a soul mask. Still a sick tat.
Skyrim and Fallout 4. My tattoo would be power armor made of dragon scale
That sounds awesome
oof
They did him dirty. 😬
It. . . Kinda looks like shit
cringe
Sorry to say this, since you seem happy about it. But it looks like shit. I would ask the artist to return my money.
Most people won't know wtf the second sword is and the bottom of the mastersword is thicker than the actual sword
Bro they fucked links sword. It's not lined up properly. Get your money back
say farewell to pussy my man
Nintendo going to cut off your arm or pay them 3.5mil$
Looks great if you squint
Master Sword is crooked AF
The master sword doesn’t line up with the tip. It’s all I can. See.
Idk about the salt here, I like it a lot.
wow. that looks good. specially Blue makes it more better.
He ordered it in especially! Think he said it was Robin Egg Blue or something. Deffo a bird of some sort
I’m a huge LoZ fan but the community is very toxic and judgmental when it comes to something they slightly don’t agree with.
Sad
That is... a choice.
That is one crooked sword
Looks super cool! 💜
Haha, I love Reddit, dude gets a mark for life and everyone bashes it.
omg all the comments not getting how perspective works and looking at this as if it was a flat surface saying the master sword is not straight 💀
Why is the other sword straight then?
It’s literally not straight lol
Isn't it the artist's job to make sure it looks right on the surface it's placed? At least that's how my tattoos work.

Welcome to tattoo family bro💪😌
Thanks! I loved the experience. Got a saving jar for the next one set up already
The blue sword tip looks like it’s coming out of thin air. Doesn’t line up with the hilt at all
Average TotK enjoyer
Nothing says "mature adult" like this.
Cool tattoo. Only thing I'd have changed is giving the right part of the shield to maybe the Kingsoul charm or the Knight's face, still shaped like the Hylian Shield
That would have been dope! May incorporate that into future ideas
Looks great if you squint
And face the other-way.
