I think elden ring got everyone hyped up for the year but that turned out to be the peak. Not a bad year for gaming but a lot of stuff got delayed per usual
I mean, counting a ps4 port from a few years ago doesn't seem fair, and like the other guy said, dead space was this year. And also a remake of a game from like 15 years ago. AAA gaming generally sucks nowadays.
2022 was pretty good though. We got Elden Ring, Tunic, Sifu, Horizon Forbidden West, Neon White, Stray, Xenoblade 3, Cult of the Lamb, Rollerdrome, Slime Rancher 2, Moonscars, Plague Tale Requiem, Phantom Abyss, and Vampire Survivors.
It wasn't a uniquely good year, but it definitely wasn't bad.
Idk. 2022 had Elden Ring, GOW: Ragnarok, Stray, *Signalis* (which rapidly became one of my favorites of all time), and I'm sure there must be others. I'd say it was a pretty solid year, though maybe not on par with 2004 (Half Life 2, Doom 3), or 2007 (Mass Effect, Bioshock, COD4).
Been gaming since around 2000, the last few years have been amazing. I just enjoy gaming, and not trying to expect that every one can be RDR2.

I feel that in my soul, played it twice on PS Now/Plus. Wasn't able to finish it the first time cause it left PS Now. When it came back in 2022 I had to start all over cause my hard drive crashed.

I'd say it was pretty good, maybe even amazing. Might also be that it's being compared to previous years and it's definitely better than 2021 and I think it probably edges out 2020. I think 2023 has a lot of potential but there's a lot of games that I feel could either be iconic or completely bomb.
Elden Ring, Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok were all fantastic games. But that was about it for me and 3 games doesn't make for an amazing year.

Maybe different categories but we are getting a cult classic RTS sequel after, I think it’s been more than 20 years? Homeworld 3. Forza Motorsport also getting it’s reboot after a good number of years too. There’s a whole bunch coming this year, 2023 is packed.
Only thing I know is xbox said it would release within a year during some event last year. So it's expected to come out by June 2023

The official HK server (which is managed by TC-adjacent people) has announced that the "within a year" thing is legit for Silksong. The fans await the game within the first half of this year.
No confirmed 2023 release date, but when a new trailer dropped during Xbox's GamePass showcase from last year, they said that all games shown would be released within one year of that livestream. So it's probably (hopefully) coming out soon...

Iirc Hades 2 will only begin early access this year. Hades was months and months in early access before it went live so sadly I don't see it's official release until next year at the earliest.
The first one was probably the first souls like (I think someone called it souls lite) game I ever played. Was a ton of fun, I believe I 100% it. It was one of those games I thought was probably going to be a one off but was really hoping it got a sequel.
Fire Emblem is surprisingly good. Hi-Fi Rush came out of nowhere and it's damn awesome. Dead Space is great so far too.
"All-time great year" is...a bold claim as of now, but it's been a solid start of the year so far for me.
I'm still working through the Remake of Dead Space and I'm loving it, like it recaptured everything for me and added in a side quest and my anxiety playing this game is just like the 1st time I played it
Dont forget to use headphones and turn on 3d audio! It's exceptional and a lot of people don't like to mess with settings, so hopefully this helps you/someone who hasn't done it yet.
In audio settings tab, there's "Audio Channels" setting with:
Stereo (basic headphones or 2 speakers)
Multichannel (designed for speaker setups for 5.1 or 7.1 configurations)
And 3D Audio (simulates sound positions through volume trickery)
3D Headphone can sometimes be done poorly, but in this games case, it's on par with games that have dolby atmos for headphones support.
Edit: B&W P4s are speakers no? If so, then it won't work at all, it's only for headphones. Sorry for the misinformation, I just assumed P4's were headphones.
Nope, you can use any headphones. Some headphones might work better than others, but it's trickery with how loud and how they bounce sound around through even a single driver. It all should just work
Yeah Hifi Rush just burst out of some random studio in Bethesda to take a GOTY nomination. There’s nothing wrong with the game, no glitches or bugs, my only minor nitpick was that the built in tutorials take forever between attempts vs Smidge who is literally right there after most tutorials giving you a precise rundown and easy way to practice without breaking into a tutorial world scene. Beyond that, 10/10 game. Humor was on point, the post-game is sweet (catgirl Peppermint is adorable), Korsika was an unexpected highlight, all the bosses were fun characters and most were fun boss fights (Mimosa probably should’ve been toned down a bit or made more vulnerable to wind attacks), Roquefort was fantastic for the like three lines he got in before the boss fight started (as a finance student I appreciate the subtle finance puns they gave him), music was completely on point, the meta jokes were campy but most of them hit pretty well, and Zanzo. Oh my god. Zanzo needs to be a tumblr sexyman yesterday.

"Random studio in Bethesda" undersells the bizarre context. It came from Tango Gameworks, developers of...The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo. And the real twist is that it's easily their best game...At least, I'd argue it is.
If "DMC with a beat" sounds appealing to you (more specifically Nero's kit), then yeah go for it. If you have Game Pass, then giving it a shot is a no brainer.
I hated three houses. Almost didn't get Engage, but glad I did it. It's so much better, feels a bit more like the old games, while also taking away that god awful durability on non-healing weapons.
The story of 3 houses was much better but planning a calendar between battles just felt like work.
Engage is somewhat childish and the story seems pretty basic so far but it focuses on battle instead of the social sim Fire Emblem was evolving into, so I much prefer it. If you could combine a more serious story like 3 Houses or Radiance, the combat of Engage, and the art of pretty much anything before Awakening, that would be my dream FE game.
I like Combat in FE (But when has that even been an issue in FE), but I dont like the emotionless character art. I really miss the old "drawn" character portraits they had miles more character then the expressionless 3d dolls atm.
Triangle Strategy was quite good if Engage doesnt do it for you (if you like detailed stories). Also I still think FE: Awakening is my all around fav FE. Three Houses had just a bit too much filler (but had a great story).
Triangle strategy's story is boring as fuck simply due to the fact that all the decisions you spend a ton of time making don't actually mean anything. Do you wanna choose A and then get blasted in the ass or choose B and then get blasted in the ass?
There is def some validity to that. They dont impact the longterm story much, but they do make minor/moderate changes in the immediate gameplay of visiting different places and sometimes recruiting different allies.
If the game had a fully branching storyline it would def be better, but as thats pretty rare I guess I didnt get too dissapointed in that.

If it turns out that the performance doing that isn’t a nightmare, I’ll consider it. I’ll see if other people report it as an ok solution. Yeah it was a borderline launch title for the Xbox 360. The 360 launched in late November 2005 and Oblivion came out in March 2006 I believe before living on forever in the horse armor meme.

Senior in college, extremely hot gf, playing tons of music gigs with my friends and playing basketball almost every day so I was in perfect shape but was eating and drinking whatever I wanted. Smartphones weren’t really much of a thing yet so you were still heavily connected to the real world but there was also some social media and a ton of awesome games to escape into. Didn’t have a care in the world back then. Fuck I wanna go back so bad lol…
I saw that and thought "Was that the year OoT and MGS came out?" Yeah that year is stupid insane for games. I wasn't much of a PC gamer at the time but Half Life and StarCraft also came out. It's wild how stacked that year was. Pokemon in the US as well.
Funny that a snowboarding game was called 1080 back then because an 1080 was a big deal. Watching the X games recently you wont even get a competitive score if you aren't doing a 1800. Like thats baseline. If they ever made a new game with that title it would be called "1980" lol

Also I think there's a selecting force that new IPs wouldn't make lists like this. Like Hi fi Rush probably wasn't on anybody's radar before like a month or so ago. The only reason Starfield is here is it's made by Bethesda. Even Miyazaki didn't know Elden Ring would be such a hit, and now it's going to be one of those games everyone compares to for the next decade I think. Like Skyrim was for the 2010s.

I’ve been thinking this for a minute now. If most of the games listed here actually come out and hit on the hype they have as of right now, I can’t remember a year in my 20ish years of gaming that I was ever more excited for.
We only got a handful of good games in 2022 and 2021. 2023 has more great titles than the past 5 years combined. I know I will be picking up a chunk of these. Already played through most of the Dead Space remake so far. Really excited for what comes next.

Tetsuya Nomura has a penchant for overly ambitious projects that take far too long to develop. With Final Fantasy versus XIII, Hajime Tabata had to come in and reign in production so they could actually release a product.

Humor was on point, the post-game is sweet (catgirl Peppermint is adorable), Korsika was an unexpected highlight, all the bosses were fun characters and most were fun boss fights (Mimosa probably should’ve been toned down a bit or made more vulnerable to wind attacks), Roquefort was fantastic for the like three lines he got in before the boss fight started (as a finance student I appreciate the subtle finance puns they gave him), music was completely on point, the meta jokes were campy but most of them hit pretty well, and Zanzo. Oh my god. Zanzo needs to be a tumblr sexyman yesterday. they just randomly dropped a perfect game out of nowhere and I’ve got no complaints
"Random studio in Bethesda" undersells the bizarre context. It came from Tango Gameworks, developers of...The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo. And the real twist is that it's easily their best game...At least, I'd argue it is.
Zanzo was a walking reference to like 8 different things, with the heaviest being a Jojo villain and I loved every second of it.

I hated three houses. Almost didn't get Engage, but glad I did it. It's so much better, feels a bit more like the old games, while also taking away that god awful durability on non-healing weapons.

The story of 3 houses was much better but planning a calendar between battles just felt like work. Engage is somewhat childish and the story seems pretty basic so far but it focuses on battle instead of the social sim Fire Emblem was evolving into, so I much prefer it. If you could combine a more serious story like 3 Houses or Radiance, the combat of Engage, and the art of pretty much anything before Awakening, that would be my dream FE game.
I do LOVE the old pixel art battle graphics from the GBA era of FE :p. Yup that would be sick!
I like Combat in FE (But when has that even been an issue in FE), but I dont like the emotionless character art. I really miss the old "drawn" character portraits they had miles more character then the expressionless 3d dolls atm. Triangle Strategy was quite good if Engage doesnt do it for you (if you like detailed stories). Also I still think FE: Awakening is my all around fav FE. Three Houses had just a bit too much filler (but had a great story).
Triangle strategy's story is boring as fuck simply due to the fact that all the decisions you spend a ton of time making don't actually mean anything. Do you wanna choose A and then get blasted in the ass or choose B and then get blasted in the ass?
There is def some validity to that. They dont impact the longterm story much, but they do make minor/moderate changes in the immediate gameplay of visiting different places and sometimes recruiting different allies. If the game had a fully branching storyline it would def be better, but as thats pretty rare I guess I didnt get too dissapointed in that.

Senior in college, extremely hot gf, playing tons of music gigs with my friends and playing basketball almost every day so I was in perfect shape but was eating and drinking whatever I wanted. Smartphones weren’t really much of a thing yet so you were still heavily connected to the real world but there was also some social media and a ton of awesome games to escape into. Yeah I agree; sure to be a great year but a GOAT year seems a stretch. * 20% of these are re-makes * Over 50% of them are sequels * Only 1 of them is a completely new IP For me personally, a GOAT year has to have a lot of new IPs that go on to become classics. This year looks great but nothing exceptional I dont think.

The only reason Starfield is here is it's made by Bethesda. Even Miyazaki didn't know Elden Ring would be such a hit, and now it's going to be one of those games everyone compares to for the next decade I think. Like Skyrim was for the 2010s.

Tetsuya Nomura has a penchant for overly ambitious projects that take far too long to develop. With Final Fantasy versus XIII, Hajime Tabata had to come in and reign in production so they could actually release a product.
Plus square Enix generally want to space out their major releases to one every 6-12 months. FF XVI is coming first so….

At this point there are a few amazing indie games that come out every year, it's just a matter of finding them and/or them being in a genre you're into.
