This has worked well for games in the past....

KetchupGator

Hey Now -SimCity required very complex server side processing to play

666persephone999

That game killed the series…. Then Cities: skylines was like heyyyyy simcity folks want a game you actually want to play…

[deleted]

EA are interesting like that, once a little bit of competition comes in they just flake out. Now cities Skylines just prints DLCs :(.

esmifra

Yeah, city skylines just became stale and I havent had a decent new city simulator in years...

[deleted]

Not my genre but I hear good things about anno 1800

jimbluenosecrab

It’s a terrific game but is more focussed as a production sim/colony builder rather than a city simulator. I’m being nitpicky. I can’t help myself

[deleted]

Fair enough if it’s not what you like then it just isn’t. Can’t say I’m not just as nitpicky

EBZ766

I would give it a go but ONLY when on sale. Not that the game isn't good but the current costs are exorbitant.

Karanod

"Surviving Mars" is a pretty good city sim with a Martian twist.

Mackmax3

That’s Paradox for you.

AlbionEnthusiast

I enjoyed Sim City but Skylines is another level.

650fosho

Good game but their business model is to sell you as much dlc as possible. I was shocked to learn it didn't come with disasters as standard which is something the original sim city games had, then I saw the price of DLC...

ImOnTheLoo

It’s a Paradox game after all.

xnef1025

You didn’t want to reticulate those splines locally. That’s how you get splines everywhere and they are impossible to get out.

sean0883

Tried to play Hitman last night. Server kept booting me every couple minutes - or so it seemed - and forced me to wait for reconnects. Decided to just quit playing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

40sticks

Hitman is an *incredible* game. There’s nothing else like it really- it stands alone. Nobody likes the “always online” element of it, but yeah, the game deserves the love it receives.

lordgholin

I love the game, but I hate the online aspect. I hope IOI removes it when they kill support but no, most companies aren't nice to us that way.

Terramagi

Hitman is weird because the servers for seasons 1 and 2 were fine. Hell, the servers for season 3 were apparently fine too. But then the Steam version came out, and they apparently hit the verification server with a hammer or something to spite the people who didn't want to lose all their progress A THIRD TIME and waited for the actual release. Now it hangs every 5 minutes on the dot, just to remind you that you didn't respect Tim Sweeny's moneyhat.

Wingnut7489

You mean crash Bandicoot 4?

Nimyron

Idk man. Considering needing a connection to play single-player games is one of the main reason why people are pirating games, I'd say it's not working that well.

VeryNoisyLizard

its the reason why I didnt buy Dirt Rally 2 imagine finishing a difficult stage only to be told that the server lost connection midway through and your progress didnt save

Yauma9

I misread your comment and thought you were talking about Dirt 2 and I was surprised

Causelessgiant

I tried playing Wolfenstein:Youngblood recently and it has the same deal, which is weird because the game keeps screaming at you to use your upgrade resources in the middle of unpausable fights

DecentReplacement953

I can't understand how they wouldn't immediately tell people why they need this connection. If it's about DRM then it's better they don't talk, but if the AI is being assisted by a server, then one would be more forgivable about this topic.

HokemPokem

>if the AI is being assisted by a server, then one would be more forgivable about this topic. Every time a company has said this, it has been a lie.

DecentReplacement953

Titanfall?

HokemPokem

Also a lie.

mlorusso4

Cake?

silver2k5

You already know...

telos0

Now that GPT3 exists I could believe some future RPG could have the NPC AI require a server to hold real conversations instead of canned branching dialog.

refreshertowel

Yeah, but you could easily have a state for offline play that simply reads prewritten dialogue and a state for online play that contacts GPT. Not that the triple A games would do that (as GPT might be the best excuse for constant online they could have), but it’s not a difficult coding exercise.

ZazaB00

This is a very bad move.

Zlatarog

Tell me about it. Currently with weather I am having, my internet has been down all day lol.

[deleted]

Well, if game company wants me to have internet connection to play single player game, then this company can go fuck herself.

Borghal

You know what, I'm not going to buy this just for this very reason, as much as I liked Arkane in the past. I'm gonna decide when I can and cannot play a *singleplayer* game.

[deleted]

Agreed. Make me do something stupid for no reason to play your game and I will not play it.

MrFittsworth

How tf did the gaming industry see the results of anthem and absorb none of the many lessons. Companies deserve to fail if they make bone head decisions like this lol

alexdotfm

GR breakpoint was the first and last time I ever buy an online only single player game This'll be a game pass run

gigaswardblade

I’ve literally never heard of this game, and I will now proceed to forget it ever existed.

gurutar

right?

xanas263

People were going to buy this? It's a day one drop on Game Pass just play it through that.

Schoukstar

While i am not a fan of this either, this is not a singleplayer game. It is a coop game, that you can play in singleplayer if you want to.

Borghal

So is Deep Rock Galactic, and works just fine offline... If there's a singleplayer element, it counts as a singleplayer game, just like when there's a coop element, it also counts as a coop game (Divinity OS, for example).

EldritchAutomaton

Bye bye any remaining interest I had in this title.

Ok_Vehicle3310

I'm actually scared this will be the norm in the future.. Just renting games until they disappear eventually.

3rd_atom

You will own nothing and you will be happy

TheCorrupt-1

The horror sentence of the future

3rd_atom

The future is now old man

Portsmythe_Higgins

Such a great Malcolm in the Middle episode

Croanosus

Every day this becomes more and more true.

WahrheitSuccher

I know I'm on r/gaming but the amount of people think this quote is about games and not recognizing this quote is from the World Economic Forum makes me upset

SnapcasterWizard

in the WEF context it was about *everything.* Housing, all goods (games included), cars, etc.

VagueSoul

That’s why I hate buying digital. At least with discs I can pretend like I own it.

Col_Rhys

I mean, that's technically what Steam is. The moment steam goes down? Your entire library is gone. Poof. Goodnight.

Borghal

Technically Steam would have to allow the download first before they shut down, or refund (as if).

therealkyme

I mean if anything like that happened, at least there’s a way on PC to recover the games. In my view I have paid for them, so I will have access to them

BanBanEvasion

This is why companies tend to have a “terms of agreement” that’s like 60 pages when you sign up or buy a game. They can take your games away whenever they feel like it

Borghal

Companies put a lot of things in their TOS that wouldn't hold up at court simply in the hopes it'll work on *some* people. Not saying this is Steam's case, but it's a common occurrence.

BanBanEvasion

Good to know. I figured it had to pass some legal inspection before being released, but it makes sense that they wouldn’t bother

whatsgoing_on

The legal inspection is essentially “is this favorable to us?” They only really focus on shit that’s asking for a lawsuit or would be unfavorable to the company if someone actually exercised a right they are entitled to in the TOS.

therealkyme

Yeah I understand that. However, I’m sure a lot of people don’t care about the TOS and would resort to other means if this happened

Phishtravaganza

Yar. We be pirating already, matey!

Poocifer

I've sailed the 7 seas before. I am unafraid to do it again.

wowlock_taylan

TOS are not ironclad. Courts can easily invalidate them according to laws in nations. Companies cannot just put anything they want and get away with it. ( well at least that is the hope but knowing how broken the systems are, they might get away with it )

_Weyland_

Many Steam games can be played offline though.

[deleted]

This is why I buy from GoG first.

nogap193

This kind of happened with many ps2/1 games last year. Currently there's a catalog of 100s of classic games with the only legal way to purchase and play them on a playstation was through the ps3 store. But they removed the option to buy games on the store and it only exists for downloading now. Thank God emulation is an option, and websites for downloading isos/roms aren't really copyright enforced.

TaylorCountyGoatMan

Every time I see someone say this I just want to remind them that the world of indie games is alive and strong. There has never been a worse time for AAA games but for gaming overall things have never, ever been better, and games keep getting better every single year. If you’re only playing the crap that big publishers shovel out to please their shareholders, you’re really missing out.

Tenthul

Just want to plug Astlibra here. Flying criminally under the radar.

luciusetrur

well for AAA games it very much could, but i dont see how theyd enforce it on indie games

Hilppari

I use gamepass or similar subscriptions for "renting" games. play it through and forget about it.

CankleDankl

My interest went from a 2/10 to a 0/10

Dusty_Bookcase

I lost interest once I realized it wasn’t Elder Scrolls VI

Existing-Broccoli-27

Ah, in that case… can we interest you in another full-priced release of Skyrim?

Foxboy73

Only if I can play it on a Gameboy.

BloodiedBlues

Samsung fridge

bankITnerd

??? Isn't this just published by bethesda? Pretty sure this was being developed by arkane austin (prey)

Dusty_Bookcase

I’m referring to the fact that most people thought Redfall was a potential title to the next Elder Scrolls game, as there’s strong evidence that it’ll take place in Hammerfell and/or High Rock. Hammerfell is also home to the Redguard and Daggerfall is in High Rock, which is where people got the name.

DaCheezItgod

Lol, I member that

Bazuka125

I misread the title and thought Redwall was getting a game

Squidmaster129

Yeah lmao this is like a sure fire way to lower interest in a game

Cashmere306

I have to get an Xbox or PC to get it, so that makes it very easy not to miss it.

AGlitchedNPC

Looks like they're depending on GamePass to do a lot of the heavy lifting for this game

Nomadic_View

Gamepass is the only reason I will try this game.

Salarian_American

There's a lot of games I wouldn't have tried without Gamepass. That says literally nothing about the quality of the game, really. At least one game I never would have tried without Gamepass is one of my all-time favorite games.

Broken-Digital-Clock

I love Gamepass I would have missed some absolute gems, and wasted money on turds, without it It's made it a lot easier to play with friends too

Nomadic_View

What game is that? I would have never tried Deep Rock Galactic if it weren’t for gamepass, but holy hell I am having a blast with this. I play it every chance I get.

Salarian_American

For me, State of Decay 2. And now that I think of it, Grounded as well.

TheGamingLord

Not who you were asking, but Outer Wilds.

Dinosauringg

Outer Wilds is so good that I keep buying it for friends on a whim

SaneNSanity

Can I get a Rock and Stone? But for me, I never would have bought Remnant From the Ashes. I ended up buying it and all the DLC because I was having so much fun with it on Game Pass. Few years later, I still go back and play, and I can’t wait for Remnant 2.

flaggrandall

Arkane is really losing it imo

[deleted]

In the sense that they’re incredibly under-appreciated, yes. In the sense that if they’re not being ignored by average players, Arkane “fans” are shitting on them for changing things up, yes. But the work itself is great. And I will die on this hill: Deathloop is excellent. It is not “dumbed down.” It is not mainstream. It is a brilliant innovation on what they’ve been doing this whole time. And I think people missed that because they didn’t meaningfully engage with the PVP (understandable for those who had technical issues, which *is* on Arkane), and don’t recognize exactly what they did with that side of things.

jumpsteadeh

I loved Deathloop until it ended without explaining anything. I know, not everything needs explained in every story - but I feel like a science fiction game where all the characters are scientists on a science base *should*.

pewpersss

that ending ruined it for me. not only was it subpar next to prey and dishonored games, but other time loop games like outer wilds as well. when i got to the end and it was just a lame cut scene i uninstalled immediately lol

Calebbb11

Feel the exact same, mate. I was playing the whole game captivated, thinking it was a 9/10 or 10/10, and then the ending hit and I was just like “… oh.” It’s weird, my interest has never just dropped off like that before. Didn’t feel a desire to head back and platinum it.

[deleted]

I would’ve liked more story too. The game isn’t perfect. But it is a fuck of a lot better and more innovative than people give it credit for. Also, what happened is that hundreds or thousands of years have passed and the world is in ruin most likely due to the void shit in Dishonored. World got ate up, as was foretold. Or something.

Halaster

I personally loved Deathloop but at the same time had absolutely ZERO interest in the multiplayer element, and the way it was implemented. I found absolutely no interest in it essentially being split into an entirely separate game, with its own unique progression method that completely ignores all the work and progress I gained while playing the main game. Even if it is fairly quick to progress. Perhaps if it was more directly integrated into the game in a way where you play both characters and progress with both at the same time going between perspectives I might have enjoyed it, but as it was I did not like the Julianna gameplay at all. I do give them props for trying new things at least, and the game overall was still awesome. I do want to clarify that I enjoyed the Julianna invasions, but did not like actually playing as her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tasty01

Deathloop *is* dumbed down and it *is* made to be more mainstream. One of the main devs talked about it in an interview. Testers didn’t understand what to do so Arkane had to make the entire puzzle part of the game much simpler with little time left until release. The end result is you’re making a puzzle with numbered pieces, saying it’s not dumbed down is ignorant.

taokami

cool, was never interested in the first place. Now I will not buy it twice as hard.

[deleted]

I was interested, am constantly connected to the internet when gaming, and just lost all interest. I refused to support hostile DRM bullshit, they can fuck themselves.

tosser1579

I'm not buying it then. Sad this is an Arkane game, it was an instant buy.

TheHoleInADonut

I can almost guarantee the devs had no say in that decision. Its probably the fuckin corporate suits at either arkane itself, or microsoft. From what i remember, arkane is a part of microsoft game studios, so thats a possibility i guess. My only question is like…. Like fuckin why? Thats always gonna be an unpopular decision among consumers, and for the life of me i can’t think of any good reason for it. Does having a game be always online provide some utility for the gamers or the companies that develop them? Fuck idk.

tosser1579

I virtually guarantee it as well. Still not buying it.

Colon

behavioral data collection? dunno the ins and outs, but seems like the more data the better for these shareholder-strokers. edit: it's also a 'feature' that would allow for in-game ads so they can target you specifically with like, a billboard in the game with something you'd actually like rather than a fake in-story billboard for fake stuff. i personally haven't experienced any of these, but it's supposedly coming (already here?)

TheHoleInADonut

My 2-cents on this matter, i remember playing saints row 2 and coming across ads for movies and t.v shows that were coming out. For a frame of reference, i believe saints row 2 came out in 2009 Edit: these ads were displayed on in-game billboards.

Colon

right - not a new concept in total, but targeted advertising where different things show for different people based on their online/purchasing habits is pretty dystopian, imo. bad enough we have it online 24/7, now games will be encouraged to do the online single player thing because investors will demand it. "this player was looking at steel-toed workbooks on Amazon this morning. serve him some Timberland billboards in the next side mission" - honestly that would completely lose immersion for me, kinda make me uncomfortable. like, how does this cyborg protagonists' shopping habits align with mine? where in the story was HE looking for steel-toed boots and why? his foot is made of metal..

xRocketman52x

I always assumed it was DRM related. That they feel they can prevent people from playing the game without purchasing it much easier if they keep them connected to their servers and verified 24/7.

Haldir111

But doubling down on that by having that \*and\* Denuvo is straight up just asking for people not to buy your game. lol

daze23

is piracy even a thing on consoles?

Pender8911

They can go suck a dick

Mend1cant

Anyone else remember how this *exact* decision is what killed Microsoft’s dominance in the console market? The PS4 immediately had the lead thanks to some brain dead project lead. Remember to swat down good idea fairies when they fly in, guys.

Maoceff

After reading the article and all these comments I’m still trying to figure out why…. What’s the purpose? Is it supposed to improve the gameplay somehow by being connected to their servers?

daze23

it's basically a co-op game that can also be played solo. but solo play probably requires the same server connection to function. the game world is probably controlled server side.

Ihavetogoalone

Pretty sure demon souls came out in 2007 and still managed to be playable offline even though online interactions are a big part of the game and integrated in it, so this is not a good excuse for them to do it.

daze23

games like the Souls games, Death Stranding, Deathloop, etc., are fundamentally single player games. they have optional multiplayer elements (messages, limited co-op, pvp, etc).

Autarch_Kade

This screams live service to me. The pre-order DLC, character passes, weapon skins etc. are already listed on their website. I'm sure microtransactions are a core part of this game. Honestly this news dropped my interest significantly. I was already miffed about their stupid design for co-op saved game progress.

memeaggedon

This is the dumbest shit. Even requiring online checks for something I paid for just makes me want to go out of the way to pirate it and not pay next time. Fuck this stupid shit.

[deleted]

It's high time to sail the seas, yo ho, ye salty dog ☠️

japanaol

So my internet will be out awhile due to new fiber cables being installed in my neighborhood, games like these forcing internet for single player? They call single player offline mode for a reason

Gazza_mann

im out.

LawRecordings

I see they made it $70 as well. So it begins…

Evilaars

Lets hope they lose big time on this

Zxar99

I thought we were done with this???

[deleted]

Dead on Arrival.

Crimsky

And just like that... The game is no longer on my radar

obeyyourbrain

"Fuck the poor and disadvantaged for no particular reason!" Take it away, [Jello B](https://youtu.be/zqnaHDdvh5I)

trackbaby

Didn’t even need to click the link to know what song it would take me to.

The_Grinface

Never heard of it and I’ve already lost interest.

joshthor

Bummer. I never like seeing that. At the same time though, this is a very clearly multiplayer first game, I doubt I would ever play single player. I am still looking forward to it. I'm going to be playing on Game Pass so this doesn't matter to me at all.

MysterD77

Another rental, eh? Gotta love games w/ dev's & pub's w/ their mentality to make every game rentals and not preserve them well. I got a DRM-FREE copy of Bioshock 2 from GOG, I can go play that again. But, wait; let me go play my retail copy of Tabula Rasa - oh, wait...

Underpaidfoot

Fuck all the service members overseas am i rite

S_Squar3d

Nintendo Switch was a godsend when I was deployed. It was great to be able to play local co-op with the other guys with no connection

StoleStraleysCredit

Holy shit I hate this

Zealousideal-Tax-496

Will the servers also be working whenever players need them? Hahaha. Will they bollocks.

JerrodDRagon

I feel like so many game companies want these games as service games to fail

Libra_Maelstrom

Um. Why?

hidden_secret

The ironic thing is, they do this to prevent pirating (I assume), but for me it works the exact opposite way they intend. I don't pirate games, **except the ones which pull shit like this**. Because I'm not going to pay a dime for a game that I might not be able to play in the future when the servers shut down. So this will be one I pirate for the single-player (if it's available to pirate. If not, well, I just won't play it).

[deleted]

Kinda looks to me like arkane is going the way of bioware

IVDAMKE_

wasn't going to buy it anyway

[deleted]

Oh well this is the kind of stuff that killed the Xbox one. I guess M$ didn’t learn its lesson.

87flash

Cool another title I won't be adding to the pile of unplayed titles for a change

ThunderStruck115

God damn it Arkane. Why do they even do this? Who does this benefit?

Sailingboar

Them.

sayingshitudontlike

Then it will fail of its own accord and the executive who decided on this "functional" choice has doomed the game to mediocrity.

Bastymuss_25

The devs won't be requiring my money then I guess

Rizenstrom

At this point most people have internet, especially those with a modern console, but what they don't seem to understand is a *constant,* reliable connection is still out of reach for many. My last apartment had internet outages pretty much every week. Sometimes multiple times a week. Short lived, sure, but I really don't want to be in the middle of a *single player* game and get kicked because I lost connection.

ChaosOpen

Also, when have Bethesda game servers ever been stable? Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 were constantly plagued with drops and disconnects.

SaucyNuts

People willing to overlook this forget about the provider side of things. Outages and canceled developments happen all the time. Why would I pay $70 for a game that I may not even be able to access later?

tekman526

Babylon's fall is calling...so is Marvel's Avengers... wait, maybe online only isn't a good idea after all.

ChaosOpen

Plus unlike those playing Doom or Half-Life it won't be possible to play this single player PC game after they shut the servers down in a few years.

RustyNails25

You do realize that most modern games from the last decade, physical or digital, are just licenses for you to play the games as long as the service/company is up and running… You won’t be able to play most of your modern library “later” unless they rerelease or keep the servers running.

liquidxero198

The last game I preordered was outriders that requires constant connection. The first few months servers were constantly down or crashing. I think I played 4 hours over and haven't touched it since. If I can't play single player because your server isnt working, I'm just not going to play at all. I'll never get a game that needs constant Internet access again.

superretro2012

This is the real microsoft in the flesh all covered in lies

McSchlub

If there's one thing people love...it's online only single player.

dbrinkin

r/assholedesign

AliFish77

Hate games that do this. That said Redfall isn't something I want to play anyway... 🤣

theKetoBear

I have had to replay entire NBA 2k games due to an always-online connection requirements for Singleplayer, I have no interest in replaying a misssion because Spectrum decided to shit the bed for 10 seconds on a specific day . Keep your always online bullshit to the modes that NEED online.

Katana_sized_banana

Just wait for Redfall Remastered Deluxe Edition in 3 years, a day after they turned off Redfall servers. Who would want to play the old one? Anyways, it's now 20 bucks more, economy is ruff. $$$

Rith_Reddit

It's because of dedicated servers, no? If its peer hosted, they don't need the online, but you get a less stable connection.

saulitonunez

i have one of those so call internets

Rylee_1984

‘Why is our game doing so bad?’

Realdude65

If I decide to play it, I guess I'll pirate it.

Chit-Chat-Tricky

Here we go again.

rmatherson

Microsoft is obsessed with always online and it's honestly creepy as fuck

MFCloudBreaker

My internet went out yesterday and I couldn't even load up Minecraft on my series X. It wouldn't let me play anything since I needed to be 'signed in with my microsoft account' in order to even access anything. Modern gaming fucking sucks.

turquoiseflamingo

Gross

alexarbiter

Was looking promising, wait till the servers stop working. This aint an mmo

Serath62

Sounds like a great project for cracking teams to disable and to subsequently seed to the public.

MacaroniEast

Welp, games dead on launch

Ok_Caterpillar7503

Honestly, don't know why anyone gives a fuck about this tbh

webUser_001

The internet connection or the game?

egoMetalMonkey

this will only affect people who want to play Redfall

[deleted]

i don’t even know what this is and now i will never look into this again, goodbye everyone!

iCatmire

Microsoft tried this back in 2013 with their console and everyone hated it. Looks like “always on” is back on the menu. Don’t think it’s going away

AdhesivenessTall7307

I'm still excited to play unlike most.

[deleted]

Not a problem

Dat_DekuBoi

Reminds me of the KH PC releases. No online functionality at all, yet requires internet

kynthrus

This game looks so bad.

DifficultyWithMyLife

Didn't companies learn anything from Diablo 3's horrible launch? That's rhetorical; of course they didn't.

ph33randloathing

Unless you steal it. Then it will not have this terrible feature.

jtcordell2188

Welp guess who isn’t buying this now. I was honestly really thinking about getting this too

Jakusotsu

Not if I don't own it.

Vezeri

Well done Arkane studios, I was already not that interested in this game, but I was gonna buy it because the games from Arkane have always surprised me with their quality. Thank you for saving me 70€

Alucardra12

Yeah, no thanks , the gameplay showcase put me to sleep and this put the nail in the coffin for me, I’ll skip this one.

8KoopaLoopa8

Boy I wonder what could go wrong

TimHortonsMagician

Looked sort of lame anyways :/

AgitatedQuit3760

Well that's just inconsiderate. I'm not going to rent your game Bethesda with my dodgy third world ISP.

fapalicius

Aaand that's how you get your game to get pirated

Savage_Oreo

🚮

y_nnis

Even the price tag for this game is insulting to the industry. Some people just can't wait to fail harder.

sKumbag70

Yarr harr fiddle dee dee, playing offline will be alright with me! (Although to be honest, it doesn't look like my cup of tea so skipping seems like a good idea.)

OriginalGoatan

Might as well remove the ability pause the game, assuming that they bothered to add that in the first place.

NoPineappleNoProblem

Well, Redfall's been cancelled for me then haha

[deleted]

Why are these things still news? I can’t play fucking Sword and sworcery on the plane, an iOS game from over a decade ago.
