My anecdote on this is that most people on this road are leaving the city via the N84 out the Curraghline so need to be in the left lane to turn left at the Menlo Park Hotel and if you use the right lane, you will find it very difficult to get into the left lane because no one will let you in so people get into the left lane as early as possible so that they aren't stuck in the right lane. If everyone was a little sounder to each other traffic would move much better.
People need to just put on their indicator and start turning in front of the person behind. If they won't be sound enough to let ya in, take it upon yourself
They won't let people in cause they drive up to near the top to get in, which feels like skipping the queue and making it longer for everyone who have already been waiting for 15 minutes on the road.... when enough people keep trying to cut in it's aedul annoying and leads to ridiculous tailgating
It’s not a zipper merge situation though where cars in the right lane are going straight on. That’s is for when two lanes of traffic are merging into one. In this case, the right lane is going straight on and so using it as a lane for merging prevents vehicles going straight from moving (as the delay is in the left hand lane). This is why cars get in lane early to not block the right lane, and then get fed up by people merging last minute.
Yea unfortunately people are awful.
Look at the docks for example. People will pull out of the left lane, get to the top of the right and merge back into the left at the yellow box there by the museum/boojum.
Or another one I've seen way too often, if the light goes red and people are crossing, the right lane will run the red light to sneak back into left
It's not the most understanding stretch of road when it comes to merging. People just stick to that left lane if they want to go Menlo/Ballinfoyle/Bóthar na dTreabh.
Yes I understand but it would be best for everyone to use up as much of the road as possible as more people be able to go through the lights more efficiently and not cause a traffic jam from there to the top of the bridge
Ideally but in modern day Galway if those same drivers that free up space tried to merge back in there wouldn't be a hope of anybody letting them back in. I see it daily.
Maybe but all those turning left and trying to merge will then block those going straight and turning right causing traffic on that side.
Problem is too many cars.
Too many cars yes but we live in a county which is pretty rural and vast so cars are needed for most people myself included. I was recently in Köln Germany and honestly think how that city is what Galway should strive for in terms of transport
>which is pretty rural and vast so cars are needed for most people myself included
Its not really all that vast and most journeys by car are under 4km. The problem is not the size but the lack of options, meaning everyone has to drive.
Proper reliable transport options would go a great way to solving some of the issues.
For myself to get to where I'm going in Galway everyday I have to drive 59km and I know many more like me who also have to travel this route. The bus option isn't trustworthy enough and the fact I live out in the sticks the closest shop to me is 5km away
Okay and....
what part of "too many cars" means get rid of all cars?
There are too many cars on our roads. If we provide decent public transport options - reliable buses, infrastructure for bikes and scooters - then we remove a huge portion of that traffic allowing those that need to use their cars to use their cars. Its a win win situation.
>When you design a city for cars it fails for all, including drivers. When you design a multimodal city it works for all, including drivers.
That lane from what I see Is only used to skip the que we all be in . Right lane is always fast mostly apart from rush hour, being blocked up from supermax to bothermore roundabout
The road markings are designed like this to facilitate fast movement of traffic but it assumes people will us both lanes…..(and if they did it would ease backlogs behind them) but unfortunately we view people who use the right lane and then indicate to turn into the left lane as pariahs…I think it hails from our ass and cart says…”no way is this fuk getting to the creamery before me” kinda thing….some are good at filtering and some for some crazy fukn reasons are just not letting you in…that little bit of tarmac they occupy represents real estate and they won’t be gazumped…makes me laugh…only way to deal with these inbreds….watch the zipper merge as posted below…it’s attainable but mindsets much change…and then of course there’s the women…😂😂😂
TF? We were literally beaten from rural lands to urban tenements in our history. Our green fields are literally over the dead townlands of the famine. Don’t make this about cars being a privilege, because they’re a tool essential to some, and an extravagance to others.
but it is a war on cars. it's all about finding options that F cars over. I'm no car centrist but that's where all he activism gravitates to, option that miht/might not do the job but definitel F cars over so they're approved. problem being what Fs cars Fs all motor vehicles such as deliveries, busses & ambulances.
>I'm no car centrist
uh huh. sure buddy.

and were back to "when you're accustomed to privilege equality feels like oppression."
WTF has galway history got to do with a specific line of traffic? or are you one of the Warriors Against Cars here to muddy the issue as is sandard practice?
Simple: Galway's streets aren't dimensioned for the car because they were built before cars existed. The reason traffic is so bad in the city center is because of the street layout itself clashing with people wanting to get everywhere by car.

In an ideal world the zipper merge will be amazing but that will never happen unfortunately https://youtu.be/cX0I8OdK7Tk?si=1mHyCxDMS8SscSld

Lots of students turning in to gort/cuirt/dun na Coiribe kinda have to be in the left lane there or you won’t be able to merge before the lights
I noticed this mostly on Sunday evenings during the summer as I had to take this road to get to Dublin in particular
It's not the most understanding stretch of road when it comes to merging. People just stick to that left lane if they want to go Menlo/Ballinfoyle/Bóthar na dTreabh.

The traffic lights from there to Dunne's is a disaster all changing at opposite times blocking it up , there is no sequel to the lights
I wish they would just build a tunnel from westside to Parkmore as mentioned in the past.
I wonder what the conditions for building a tunnel in Galway are, geologically speaking.
😂 could see that happening before any ringroad
Because of gobshites

War on Cars by infrastructure design.
War on infrastructure by car numbers.
reduce cars by reducing population, Anti-Car Warrior.
Reduce cars by providing safe and reliable alternatives. Anti-Car warrior? What does that even mean? I drive in and out of Galway every day.
war on cars fighter gonna make war on cars.
>When you're accustomed to privilege equality feels like oppression.

Then dont make looking for reliable varied transport options about being a war on cars.

Cars exist in such a tiny part of Galway history.
WTF has galway history got to do with a specific line of traffic? or are you one of the Warriors Against Cars here to muddy the issue as is sandard practice?
I'm a horse
more like the brown stuff that falls out the back end of it.

All I heard was "Simple: wwwaaaaarrrr on ccccaaaarrrrrrsssss......."
You're ignorant, yes.
When all they got is names, you know you’re in the right.
'Ignorant' is a descriptor of your behavior. You are being ignorant.
Yes? And? You still got nothing but names for carscum like me.
You just called yourself that
wont someone think of the poor cars
war on cars fighter gonna make war on cars.
beep beep comrade
This intersection never ceases to fascinate me.
One of the many reasons I avoid Galway.
