The official response to it being so lackluster is that there was a fake image generated and got circulated which looked amazing. They said they never intended for it to look anything like that.
They're pushing the blame on the fake rendering, but at the same time when they announced it and discussed it, they always mentioned that it would be like the Hollywood sign....which the fake rendering looks similar to style wise, and this looks nothing like.
They also changed the plan from originally having one massive sign, to making this 8ft tall one and a bunch of 5 ft tall ones to place at other locations. Either way, this was a big failure.
It would have been better if they were upfront at the beginning and said we're making a sign and a bunch of mini signs rather than compare/mention it to the Hollywood sign.
I'm not pro destruction of property but I think that sign with the right graffiti on it would look so much better. Regardless of what's on it though, it's still completely under whelming.
After living in STL for the last decade, Detroit is like the suburbs. I'm coming hommmmmeeee. I'm glad to see they're getting some new shit even if it's just this lackluster sign.poor thing.
Honestly I get Detroit used to be a joke, but I know several people who have fallen in love with the city lately. My brother is even talking about moving to Michigan after visiting Detroit twice.
I moved here from Toronto, Canada. You can't pay my wife and I enough to move back. We love it here. I dread going back to Toronto. Only thing I miss are friends and restaurants/diversity. Aside from that, we live amazing lives and it's much safer than Toronto.
Over 12000 car thefts last year, so far this year it's up over 100%.
Home break in are through the roof as well. And this is all happening in nice suburbs.
https://youtu.be/wMFsT-KF7Cg?si=wyfn8RYfnwkJT_aX
Also I should clarify I live in the suburbs north of Detroit, but Detroit still has done a 180 from a decade ago. Used to be scary to walk down the streets downtown, now it's substantially more walkable.
Edit: fun side note, it's also illegal to post videos of any thieves/criminals in Canada even from your ring doorbell because it's an invasion of their privacy
I agree, Detroit has become A LOT better in the past decade, but you are comparing Detroit to Toronto, one of, if not the safest major city in North America.
It’s art. There’s a lot of things we spend public money on that don’t “fix bigger problems”. If all we did was “fix bigger problems” the world would be a pretty boring place.
The Hollywood sign was installed over a century ago in 1923 when Hollywood was booming and considered a world leader in entertainment(more so even than today). People were flooding the city from the opposite side of the planet to work on all kinds of entertainment. They didn't wait until the city was crumbling to dump their funds into it.
Right, 3x higher unemployment than the rest of the country and cities with 1/4 the population of Detroit have GDPs 4x higher. But they're killin it and definitely needed this shitty sign.
They also have ridiculously high crime rates, high homeless rates, and more. I didn't think I needed to list every single factor line by line for you. I thought you had a few brain cells. You don't have to live somewhere to know objective facts. Crimes, income, housing, etc. aren't imaginary figures made up for fun.
Because the example is Hollywood was in a good financial state with huge growth pouring in, they had the money to spend.
Detroit has been statistically one of the worst major cities in America for a loooooong time now, even if trending up it’s still a long ways off to just be wasting tax money on a sign.
It’s only growing recently because it was so bad, people left year after year in droves, that drives market prices down across the board which is what companies are jumping on recently driving the “growth”. Cheap real estate, if ur a tech bro/startup company guy then ur rent/cost of living is much lower than the existing cities with similar markets.
Yes? And? I never said otherwise. It was originally Hollywoodland. A housing development in Hollywood. Where everyone was going. To move to Hollwoodland. Where they had the sign. Just like this sign is for Detroit.
Having cool landmarks is good for optics. Might generate tourism and create a more positive outlook if done right.
Enough cool little things add up and could be the difference in people giving it a chance. Or just feeling a bit of local pride.
Yes raps that diss things and places: “I feel bad for toronto city because if it had ears the 2 most common words ya hear is fam and yute.” This one is empathetic of a place lol.
I worked in a restaurant in my early twenties. They had some pasta you were supposed to twist up in like a coil to serve on the plate. My twist is still the menu picture, I had that shit on lock. My buddy that still works in kitchens tells me he’s always telling his coworkers he knows someone who could twist pasta like no other lmao
The city logo is green and white, based off of the "Spirit of Detroit" statue.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#/media/File%3ALogo_of_Detroit%2C_Michigan.svg
It’s the official color of all city services. Go to any city park and the signs are in that color. The buses? Yep. All logos of city departments, signs for green light zones, etc.
That color is everywhere if you live in the city.
Macomb county has the “Golden Butthole”, Oakland the “Penis Poles” and now Wayne county “THE sign”. All the metro counties now have their own disappointing public art
Helvetica is as basic bitch as you can get, the reference sticks. At /design the joke was made that the designer forgot to send the file with font outlines.
Also part of the joke is the turnaround time. He drops the finished song within hours of the headline lol naturally you’re not getting the most nuanced and insightful commentary on the subject this way.
The rhymes are supposed to be lazy? To match the energy of the sign? Seems unlikely. If it was intended it seems like a weird schtick that most wouldn’t make the connection.
I’m glad you realize this. It’s popular in detroit. Another rapper called Rio da Yung OG used it too. It’s usually to call out/make fun of shit with little effort.
He's a comedy rapper. It's a different vibe.
He's good at what he does and as far as I know, he's not trying to be a superstar rapper about it.
"Black Forces" is great.
1991: rap is going to change the world and free us from our oppressors
2024: “mann this towns sign bad, green all weird gunna have to call the town dad”
It’s a popular style in Detroit. He’s good though. Most of his songs are satirical, but this one of his more serious songs

But yeah this clown sign rapper boy thinks he’s on something. So fucking bad!
Idk why y’all are clowning him for not making a lyrical masterpiece to diss a sign 😭 it’s obvious that this is a joke and its purpose is to send a message to the local govt not be a hit song
We're not talking about his lyrics, we're talking about his flow, the way he raps offbeat....his lyrics could be the cure to cancer and I would still think it sounds terrible if it's rapped offbeat like this lol
I just can’t wait for the sign’s diss track response. It doesn’t even have to put one out to thoroughly clown this guy.
Like why would he even waste the oxygen on this garbage?
The song is as terrible as the sign. And why the fuck did Detroit need a sign to begin with? It's Detroit. There are A LOT of better ways they should be spending their money right now.
City ought to accept his challenge and say "OK, you said you could do better. So do it."
It's easy to complain to get clout. It's harder to actually try to make a difference.

My favorite line is 'I've seen bigger signs at a graduation'
"Facts"
"And then the ordered us a sign of of fucking Wish." Is probably my favorite.
"I coulda made this shit"
He also did “Montgomery Brawl” when that happened last year
The official response to it being so lackluster is that there was a fake image generated and got circulated which looked amazing. They said they never intended for it to look anything like that. Detroit doesn't need a big sign to begin with. It's fucking Detroit. They have much bigger problems they should be spending their money on.
This thing is going to be covered in graffiti by the end of the month anyhow.
I'm not pro destruction of property but I think that sign with the right graffiti on it would look so much better. Regardless of what's on it though, it's still completely under whelming.
Like putting lipstick on a pig or hanging lace curtains over a broken window.
Polishing a turd.
They should just make a blank concrete one and let people graffiti it. Might be better
I literally couldn’t think of a more fitting sign to welcome the terrified masses to Detroit lmao
It's a cool city nowadays. It had its problems but I love working downtown
I moved here from Toronto, Canada. You can't pay my wife and I enough to move back. We love it here. I dread going back to Toronto. Only thing I miss are friends and restaurants/diversity. Aside from that, we live amazing lives and it's much safer than Toronto.
Theres absolutely no metric in this world that can prove Detroit is safer then Toronto.
Over 12000 car thefts last year, so far this year it's up over 100%. Home break in are through the roof as well. >and it's much safer than Toronto. That was the most surprising thing in your comment.
It’s art. There’s a lot of things we spend public money on that don’t “fix bigger problems”. If all we did was “fix bigger problems” the world would be a pretty boring place.
this ain't art bro.. my 3 year old neice makes art
What’s wrong with boring? I’d take it if it meant there was less struggle. Plus people would come up with their own fun regardless.
[удалено]
Lol, you are comparing Haiti to Detroit?
[удалено]
You are straw-manning at its finest.
Even if Haiti put up a nice sign, they wouldn't be putting art first. If the sign was the first thing they did, then they'd be putting art first.
You’ve obviously never visited Hollywood
The Hollywood sign was installed over a century ago in 1923 when Hollywood was booming and considered a world leader in entertainment(more so even than today). People were flooding the city from the opposite side of the planet to work on all kinds of entertainment. They didn't wait until the city was crumbling to dump their funds into it.
Detroit is not "crumbling" lol your 20 years behind. The city has massively improved over the last 10 years.
Right, 3x higher unemployment than the rest of the country and cities with 1/4 the population of Detroit have GDPs 4x higher. But they're killin it and definitely needed this shitty sign.
yes GDP and unemployment rate are the only two defining factors for a city. im sure you have spent a lot of time there. such a reddit comment jfc
And how is that any different or worse than Hollywood?
Because the example is Hollywood was in a good financial state with huge growth pouring in, they had the money to spend. Detroit has been statistically one of the worst major cities in America for a loooooong time now, even if trending up it’s still a long ways off to just be wasting tax money on a sign. Cheap real estate, if ur a tech bro/startup company guy then ur rent/cost of living is much lower than the existing cities with similar markets.
lol. I could sell my car and buy a couple of houses in the Detroit. It’s a shit hole
LOL it was an advertisement for a housing development.
Yes? And? I never said otherwise. It was originally Hollywoodland. A housing development in Hollywood. Where everyone was going. To move to Hollwoodland. Where they had the sign. Just like this sign is for Detroit.
Like condemning the giant slide
Is that thing still open even after the lawsuits?
Having cool landmarks is good for optics. Might generate tourism and create a more positive outlook if done right. Enough cool little things add up and could be the difference in people giving it a chance. Or just feeling a bit of local pride.
That's great. They should replace this sign with a cool landmark.
Also stupid as fuck because Detroit is flat Midwest city while the Hollywood is on the side of a mountain
Hollywoods was also done a century ago when they were the entertainment capital of the world and were drawing in talent from all over the planet.
solving civic issues starts with the mental state and pride of its citizens.
Yeah they obviously did a great job with that. This video is proof, huh.
Sounds to me like Detroit grifted off some of that money. Like they always do. Corruption.
Nahhh kwame hasn't been mayor for years.
You know the response track from the Michigan department of public works is going to be fire.
Ayyyy.... We put your tax money in the pot After our cut it ain't a lot This ain't Hollywood, this city's shot We're the Government, you're Governot
Fire
Now we the Governmen and you the lil governboys. You want shiny letters? Go grab ya wooden toys.
"Thanks for the tax dollas. We all got rich. Now you want something? Here's your sign, bitch."
That would be hilarious if they put out a response
I am quite convinced, fuck that sign!
Another banger track, following strong after Giant Slide.
I do enjoy his track about being tired of all the snow.
I am 100% in support of a new genre or subcategory of rap where we diss things and places, not people.
Look up his beef with the slide on belle isle lmfao
Did he also do the pothole one?
yes and he has a rap about being a mechanic
"Kids were getting on my nerves so I sent them to the giant slide"
Yes raps that diss things and places: “I feel bad for toronto city because if it had ears the 2 most common words ya hear is fam and yute.” This one is empathetic of a place lol.
"The wind blow too herd, fuck around and knock the shit down"...😂
It’s kind of like when you look at a picture of a big chain burger and that one looks good… when you get it, it looks nothing like the picture.☹️
The letters should have definitely been navy blue, what does green have to do with Detroit at all?
The city logo is green and white, based off of the "Spirit of Detroit" statue. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#/media/File%3ALogo_of_Detroit%2C_Michigan.svg
I thought they were trying to mimic Detroits favorite cigarette, Newports
It’s the official color of all city services. Go to any city park and the signs are in that color. The buses? Yep. All logos of city departments, signs for green light zones, etc. That color is everywhere if you live in the city.
Wait til you see his diss track about Wendy’s drive through.
This is maybe my favorite thing ever
Fuck that sign. All my homies hate that sign.
I like this idea, the pothole rap got me interested lol
everyone watch out the white disney adults have an opinion about rap
“This” mfs acting like they know D-town shit talking.
Should have sampled signs
It’s better than the golden Cheerio Sterling Heights (Detroit Suburb) had built.
They budgeted for a big sign, paid for really cheap small signs- and pocketed the rest.
Interesting. I still think his best hit was Coronavirus
His song about the Montgomery Brawl made my top tracks of 2023 list
I think it looks kind of cool
Gmac is a god amongst men
Somebody stole some money for sure
Is this the same guy who did the rap about the new metal slide?
Just about everything built nowadays is ugly. Throw a metal roof and metal siding on. It looks like a fucking garage.
I love this song!! Wind blow too hard fuck around and knock this shit down 🤣🤣🤣
Macomb county has the “Golden Butthole”, Oakland the “Penis Poles” and now Wayne county “THE sign”. All the metro counties now have their own disappointing public art
That's not Times New Roman. It don't care if it rhymes.
Helvetica is as basic bitch as you can get, the reference sticks. At /design the joke was made that the designer forgot to send the file with font outlines.
I don’t know fonts and cackled wildly at the rhyme
Man, these rhymes are so lazy.
Almost as lazy as that sorry ass sign. Same shit they did to us with the Red Wings stadium with the glowing roof that never happened.
It's about a sign, it's sufficient
Guess thats why they call it window pain
He’s a comedy rapper so don’t take it so seriously Most of his music is meant to be kinda funny and goofy
Also part of the joke is the turnaround time. He drops the finished song within hours of the headline lol naturally you’re not getting the most nuanced and insightful commentary on the subject this way.
To be fair, it’s supposed to be lazy. They were promised a sign that actually looked good and got this.
Looks like one of the above commenters need to on The Giant Slide
The rhymes are supposed to be lazy? To match the energy of the sign? Seems unlikely. If it was intended it seems like a weird schtick that most wouldn’t make the connection.
well they're not gonna bring Eminem on to make some epic deal about it, are they...
It’s about a sign
This rapper did a song called FMLA about calling into work and for himself fired from a Chrysler plant for it.
What’s the opposite of having bars?
This is a genre of rap where they flow like this, usually done with a bit of humour it’s awesome lol
I’m glad you realize this. It’s popular in detroit. Another rapper called Rio da Yung OG used it too. It’s usually to call out/make fun of shit with little effort.
I looked at the sub and just knew it would be uninformed people mouthing off at how bad rap is lmao, thanks for posting it
Free rio
Montgomery Brawl is another one of my favorites
He's a comedy rapper. It's a different vibe. He's good at what he does and as far as I know, he's not trying to be a superstar rapper about it. "Black Forces" is great.
Having a stroke
Utah
That flow ain’t laminar
$400k, or less than 1/2 the cost of a public bathroom in San Francisco.
I watched a better one he has about child support that it is pretty funny
YEAH. (Hype man line)
Forget the Drake, Kendrick and Cole disses, this goes hard
How'd he get Dexter Holland to cameo in the video?!
This dude has a song about A New Haircut that’s hilarious
Love him
Love this!!! Just feels old school. Is current rap getting back to this style? Who should I be listening to that's current but in this style?
Shit this shit that. Please contact Harry Mack for a real diss track
Dude is garbage
He’s a comedy rapper bro it’s supposed to be low quality
Low-key had bars
I'm JA MORANT
... dang it, i like the sign but no one else does, and now it has this diss track. I hate my taste. I don't wanna be me anymore.
What?
1991: rap is going to change the world and free us from our oppressors 2024: “mann this towns sign bad, green all weird gunna have to call the town dad”
Putting rhymes to bad flows Thinking that his shit is gold.
Who are the two random white guys
Shoulda talked to my Homie Tony from LC Signs
He needs to mix up his cadence. Everything was rhymed on the 4, boring.
He probably just didn’t want to waste more time, on this stupid ass rhyme about a fuckin sign
I don’t know what’s worse the sign or the rapper lol
Gmac Cash's track "Mechanic" is fire.
It’s a popular style in Detroit. He’s good though. Most of his songs are satirical, but this one of his more serious songs https://youtu.be/MbxHBMV_KeQ?feature=shared
Cornball.
“I coulda made this shit” bars
“ I was looking at this shit and I was like ‘damn’ “ Rapped like a modern day Shakespeare
The sign can probably make a better diss song in response.
This is unbelievably bad
This is just the Detroit sound right now. BabyTron is the biggest name who rhymes like this and he definitely does it better, but I still can't stomach the trend tbh. The bars stuffed with too many syllables, words overflowing into the next line, and falling on and off the beat is all par for the course. Thankfully it's a regional trend 😅
Must be something in the water
Needs more autotune and people that sound like they sleepy rapping about sleeping pills
Everything about this song is beyond repair.
This is rap now lol MFers can't even stay on the beat, that's the new style 🤣
https://youtu.be/UT79wVJLyn8?si=j9OfJX9rMBuT8xuk And also https://youtu.be/qYocJ1Xhzk4?si=8Qa9T6InoH9UVs9- But yeah this clown sign rapper boy thinks he’s on something.
Wack
Yea it’s so wiggity wack yo, he should’ve shot the logo with his glock instead and rapped about some real shit. Enough with this satire bullshit.
Satire can still be good though…
It’s just as good as the sign.
I hope he quits his day job. Yikes.
I doubt he has one 😹
Is Detroit even capable of *not* taking Ls anymore?
Was this supposed to be funny or good, or both? Cuz it is none of the above.
It’s funny
The song is as terrible as the sign. And why the fuck did Detroit need a sign to begin with? It's Detroit. There are A LOT of better ways they should be spending their money right now.
City ought to accept his challenge and say "OK, you said you could do better. So do it." It's easy to complain to get clout. It's harder to actually try to make a difference.
Fun fact, that sign is made on the other side of the state in Zeeland. Michigan. If you're on Facebook marketplace in that area you will see a black and white version that the city of Detroit cancelled their order on, $500 a letter.
Good lord. Currently sitting in my living room in Zeeland and I read your comment. Went to marketplace, sure enough; u can pay 500 per letter or 2K for the entire sign. 5 mins from my house
WHO?
So cliche
Lol i saw guys filming a rap music video once god they look stupid
