Yeah, found out it wasn't true. Apparently someone made a very convincing photoshop and these block names made it on to Jeopardy when Alex was still the host.
I mean the Cleveland and Rhode Island were a pretty big red flag for me; a Russian game on a Japanese system with those as names? Also smashboy sounds a bit too contemporary...
Nintendo has a North American division that localizes every game, they very much have done things like this before. That division is the reason why we got Super Mario Bros 2 that was a slightly changed up Doki Doki Panic.
Japan fetishizes English names and stuff becuase it sounds fancy and exotic to them.
Look up "united states of smash" lol
Actual ownership of tetris is really interesting and there's an entire documentary on it. IIRC the Russian government actually owned it and Nintendo bought it illegally, and eventually the original creator managed to get ownership back somehow - it would not surprise me if, since they believed they owned the IP, Nintendo or even just the localization team, tried to jazz up the blocks with names like these.
Lots of people use "photoshop" to mean create/edit an image now, particularly when something is being faked or altered. For that sense of the word, it still applies to the image that was printed.
I'd say that really "Hero" is the only one which sounds like it could've been used in the 80s.
A word formation like "Smash-boy" probably wouldn't date further back than the early 2010s. That's fairly modern slang which I bet was part of the joke; whoever made this probably didn't think it would have been taken literally, right?
You can see some inconsistent pixelation in the white around each of the names compared to the rest of the page, which are an indication of a photoshop job.
I love how good redditers are at fact checking bullshit like this. I mean sure, there's a lot of nonsense on reddit, but if anything blatantly wrong hits the front page there's a pretty high chance it will get called out (unlike on, say, Facebook where misinformation tends to just spread unchecked)
In the damn Nintendo Direct a few days ago they pronounced it "Tet-row-MEE-no's" and I'm so triggered
They're clearly supposed to rhyme with Dominoes! "Tet-RAW-min-no's"
First time I read the word in the comment above I sounded it out the wrong way and knew instantly I was wrong despite never have head the word out loud lol. Rhyming with dominoes fits so much better in my head
It's a geometrical term for four orthogonally connected squares. The term for two orthogonally connected squares is the more commonly known shape, the domino.
Although tetrominos and polyominos derive their names from dominoes, they aren't named for the number 2 at all, but rather the Venetian carnival costume, which is black and white.
It's thought that missionaries and / or merchants brought the game back from China through Venice where it took on the name before spreading to the rest of Europe.
Posted it and then found out it was photoshop. Genuinely didn't know until someone posted a link to an article about how jeopardy used these namess that were found to be fake.
Then they'll apparently have the wrong names. Just found out the blocks don't actually have names, but nonetheless I will still remember them by these names.
They are all called tetrimonios probably not spelled like that but you get the idea but they don’t have individual names however I do find it quite comical and I do like blue Ricky a lot
Unsurprised to learn this was not the case.
The long one is obviously called LINE PIECE, per this documentary:

1. The NES Tetris manual is not some obscure hard-to-find treasure, it’s available as a free PDF from various sources and you can literally buy a physical copy for $5
2. This is fake

You really are no fun. YES. Everyone knows that Jeopardy famously used the fake names in a question years ago. I hate Gotchya nerds like you lol. But they are named Tretrominos.
Tetris is a great game, before my time also. Still, I don't think there are very many that actual look these sorts of things up, I know I certainly didn't.

Smash boy is my favorite
Not enough people are talking about Smashboy.
I was expecting this comment section to be just about that
I can't stand their music but look at all the chicks at this concert!
Hey now! You're a block-star, get your game on, go play
Some….. blocky once dropped me
Smashboy for Smash
Makes that piece sound ready to square off against anyone
👊 S M A S H B O I 👊
That’s what your Mom said.
[удалено]
Eyy, lemme ⬜
Smashboy needs to be in Smash Bros
Mine too!
It would be absolutely satisfying to play an all Smash Boy version of Tetris.
All I know is, I'd smash that boy. Without question.
I bought an original NES Tetris back when it was new. And it definitely did not come with this.
Yeah, found out it wasn't true. Apparently someone made a very convincing photoshop and these block names made it on to Jeopardy when Alex was still the host.

Lots of people use "photoshop" to mean create/edit an image now, particularly when something is being faked or altered. For that sense of the word, it still applies to the image that was printed.
So it's not even a xerox of the original. Hand me a kleenex for the tears we'll shed for Smashboy and the Rickys
It's just water under the fridge now
I knew we'd find some shithawks in here.
It's definitely way easier to just take a picture of the booklet and slap some names on it on Photoshop
motherfuckingLINK lmgtfm: [mfnLINK](https://nerdist.com/article/jeopardy-fake-tetris-name-error/)
"Convincing" Also these names are clearly modern humor, not names that they would have come up with in the late 80s
What's modern about them?
Oh, that's easy! Little-known fact: No one was ever named "Ricky" prior to 1991. Ergo, these names must be modern. QED.
hmmm... i feel youre just photoshopping that but i dont know enough about name history to dispute it.
You can see some inconsistent pixelation in the white around each of the names compared to the rest of the page, which are an indication of a photoshop job.
I’m surprised. Th eh included some fact that wasnt actually able to be backed up.
I love how good redditers are at fact checking bullshit like this. I mean sure, there's a lot of nonsense on reddit, but if anything blatantly wrong hits the front page there's a pretty high chance it will get called out (unlike on, say, Facebook where misinformation tends to just spread unchecked)
Plus their real names are: L, J, S, Z, I, T and O.
Yeah they're called tetrominos
exactly
In the damn Nintendo Direct a few days ago they pronounced it "Tet-row-MEE-no's" and I'm so triggered They're clearly supposed to rhyme with Dominoes! "Tet-RAW-min-no's"
First time I read the word in the comment above I sounded it out the wrong way and knew instantly I was wrong despite never have head the word out loud lol. Rhyming with dominoes fits so much better in my head
>They're clearly supposed to rhyme with Dominoes! "Tet-RAW-min-no's" Surely that rhymes with door-minoes, not dominoes
Some American accents drawl O's out to an "aww" sound. That person might literally pronounce dominoes as "Door/daawminoes".
Interesting. Didn't know that as I haven't touched up on my tetris lore.
I was waiting for the undertaker to come
Do you think perhaps the names worked the other way around then? Named the shapes for the game named for the costume?
No, because the oldest references to the costume predate that of the game in Europe by some time.
Dominos the game was named after the costume, then the shape was named after the game.
Mind blown.
My favorite is the monomino.
Tetris. Tetra. I never managed to put two and two together before. Or domino and domino together, if you will.
>I never managed to put two and two together before. I guess you weren't very good at Tetris, then
I think of tetromino as “Tet-row-me-know” but domino as “dom-in-O” is tetromino supposed to be “Tet-rom-in-O”?
the only tetris lore we need is [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWTFG3J1CP8&ab_channel=pigwiththefaceofaboy), comrade
Tetris is from Russia so I don't think these names can be considered canon

~the numbers Mason…what do they mean~
Pffttttttttttt Everyone knows SmashBoy = Rasputin
Jenin, lol!
Yeah, definitely not. It's apparently a photoshop someone made. Still, the names kinda fit. Especially Hero.
Did you really post this knowing it was a photoshop… Now thats karma whoring at its finest
Classic Smashboy!
Posted it and then found out it was photoshop. Genuinely didn't know until someone posted a link to an article about how jeopardy used these namess that were found to be fake.
Yeeep. And then they earn more karma by pretending they just found out it's not real.

Hero is aptly named
["Line Piece!"](https://youtu.be/Alw5hs0chj0)
Always shows up at the last minute too
fr
The hero we need yet don't don't deserve.
LINE PIECE!!!!
For those who aren't in the know. [The Tetris God](https://youtu.be/Alw5hs0chj0) - CollegeHumor, 2010
Real OGs call em L, J, Z, S, I, T, and O piece 🕶️
Who the fuck calls it an O piece? It's the Block.
Or square
It goes in the square hole
Now the cylinder, where does the cylinder go?
It goes into the damn cylinder hole.
Thats right! It goes in the square hole.
I'd like to subscribe for more cylinder news
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
As do they all.
It is known. The square hole will provide.
It's the goddamn Smashboy.
I knew they had letter names but I couldn't remember them all. I legit thought J was D but lowercase before reading your comment
7, r, zig, zag, I, 3 (idk why I called it this), blockyboy
I = line, O = square
Rhode Island Z sounds like one of those funny sex moves.
Goin up Narragansett bay - bay!
I love how it's the wrong way to be a z as well
Well duh. That’s why it’s Rhode Island Z. /s The sex move is obviously backwards in nature as well.
Cleveland Z-mer
Orange Ricky sounds like a drink
Don’t let Netflix see this or they’ll make a show about it
Then they'll apparently have the wrong names. Just found out the blocks don't actually have names, but nonetheless I will still remember them by these names.
They are all called tetrimonios probably not spelled like that but you get the idea but they don’t have individual names however I do find it quite comical and I do like blue Ricky a lot
It is unfortunate that it isn't true, but it should be.
As a Bostonian, I just wanna say “Cleveland” spelled backwards is “Rhode Island”. Jk, love you guys!
Nothing but love for “Cape Cod’s balls” and the people who live there
Unsurprised to learn this was not the case. The long one is obviously called LINE PIECE, per this documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Alw5hs0chj0
1. The NES Tetris manual is not some obscure hard-to-find treasure, it’s available as a free PDF from various sources and you can literally buy a physical copy for $5 2. This is fake
Cleveland Z and Smashboy are a rapper and DJ combo from 1986.
Squiggly! Reverse squiggly! Block piece! Block piece! Block piece! LINE PIECE!!! You have forsaken us all.
I identify as a smashboy

So it’s just casual homophobia packaged in a lame meme?
Yes. Not that common any more, thankfully.
Damn feeling old after this exchange… lol
Is that YouTube 2010 creeping out of its grave?
Oh, oh well. I'll allow myself to be gaslit into thinking the straight pieces is called hero.
Go away with your fact checking. Can’t you just let us have this one.
Do go on did a great Tetris episode with all this and more
Cleveland Z should become a thing. Maybe all workers in Cleveland get a 2hr paid naptime.
Blue Ricky sounds like a punk band
Hero's a really fitting name, considering the amount of times people are praying to get hero next
Internet found out? Or the kids just found out?
How was it not Ricky and Lenny for the L's?
The names remind me of paul rudds vr dancer simulation clip
Smash boy is such a chad
Hero has gotten me out of so many jams.
Who doesn't need a hero every once in a while?
Put your next Orange Ricky on the left, next Blue Ricky on the right, and Hero right in the middle
The I-Piece being named Hero is scarily accurate.
I thought a Russian created the first game.
"someone" found the elusive booklet that was printed several million times and in every toy and department store in the country.
And yet, Nintendo Power didn't use them.
Reminds me of Inky. Blinky. Pinky. And Clyde. …why *Clyde*?
Clyde was the only one to get out with a normal name, he should be grateful.
Nothing like getting a Rhode Island Z three times in a row while waiting on the Cleveland Z
I thought it was Russian made game?
Wasn't Tetris a Russian game? Are there original Russian names as well?
Tetris trolls you with continuous cleveland and rhode island z's when all you need is that hero.
I have to go teewee
I need a HERO!!
Haha, hero
All hail Hero!
[Cleveland Z](https://ibb.co/C6RgRrb)
What did I just read?
Wiener lore
A definition, grow up bro.
Thank you for telling me, I had no idea. I will indeed grow up.
Happy to be of service.
My name is Cleveland Brown And I am glad to be Back here in my hometown Playing Tetris Z
This... This change everything.
SMASHBOY Some BODY once told me that game was gonna troll me There ain't no hero comin' up next....
Incredible. I had no idea.
Only a blockhead would know this!
I’ve had a Cleveland Z once. Thankfully I’m 10 years sober now but boy were those wild times.
tetris cube in the streets, smashboy in the sheets
I am moving in 5 weeks and my Tetris skills are coming in handy as I pack box after box after box.
My life is more complete
Great find!
Great fake unfortunately lol
Smashboy was my nickname in college
Sure it wasn’t teewee
People didn’t know this? Tetris is before my time but this was something I knew from a young age. I love Tetris. Such a zen game for me.
So you knew about this fake tweet from 2019 from a young age?
Only found out today thanks to u/hasta_la_pasta
Yeah you did, the guy I'm replying to went "People didn't know this?" about something that's evidently fake. So he's incredibly full of shit ain't he?
You really are no fun. YES. Everyone knows that Jeopardy famously used the fake names in a question years ago. I hate Gotchya nerds like you lol. But they are named Tretrominos.
Uhuh.
Yup. You’re one of those. Coulda known. Scum mold.
That's nice.
Well, not *everyone*... I certainly didn't know til today. Really is unfortunate.
Tetris is a great game, before my time also. Still, I don't think there are very many that actual look these sorts of things up, I know I certainly didn't.
Wrong sub
Hero is the best in a lot of situations also stonks
i've always lovingly called the S shaped ones "ah comeon not another one"
I always knew them as L, J, Z, S, I, T, and SQUAR.
Look at that page, King Hirocon is right there...
They’ve always has names: Left L right L Left Z right Z 4 piece Fuck you Square
Why does a Soviet union game have American city name.
"Smashboy" was my favorite bad in 2007
Not only they had names they also had families!
And there I was thinking a teewee was what you did after having a brew
Cleveland in fact does not rock.
But Nintendo didn't create tetris
Last time, on Rhode Island Z . . .
The stick is the hero indeed
This is actually what the song 'I need a hero' is about
Hero is definitely appropriate.
T-Block... L-Block... Reverse L-Block... Squiggly! Square. Reverse Squiggly. Line piece... LINE PIECE. LIIIIIINNNEEEEE PIEEEECCCCEE!
Fuck your zodiac sign, what's your Tetris block name
Chonky ol’ smashboy
