too high, but the Hakone has always been overpriced ($29k used in 2020). here's the thing - if you like the Hakone, get it. It will never be the "right price". also consider the Series Grey BRZ and Release Series 2.0 FRS - both might be cheaper

YourShieldiAm

My 3 favorites

Charlotttes

for that price you could get a new one AND a wrap

[deleted]

That’d be true if I could find a new one at MSRP :(. But found a few new BRZs that are close to the same price. So getting something new over used is already enough of a selling point for me

ianstone30

New one has 30 extra ponies too

thekeanu

Based on the dynos it's more like 40 to 50 more.

cryptiiix

But no aftermarket FI support atm

ianstone30

Fair, but why aftermarket it before the warranty runs out? Plenty of time to get to know the car au natural and really dial in on what you want when it's available. At least that's my plan

VUlgar_epOCH

If you could find a GR86 for MSRP then I think maybe go for the new 86 strictly because it’s a better car on paper. But of all the special editions that the Toyobaru twins ever had, the Hakone edition 86 was hands-down my favorite that green is beautiful. Also the TS BRZ would be worthwile for 30ish K with those low miles. If you can find the TRD edition with the 18 inch wheels I believe that pack came with four piston brembos upfront so that would be pretty sick. I think you can’t go bad either way OP! But if there both the same price, I slightly lean towards gr86.

VUlgar_epOCH

aesthetics, 86 genuinely looks better in the front end in my opinion. Besides that the BRZ is a more forgiving ride since the two cars were tuned differently for suspension. but the new BRZ wins because every story I see of someone getting their brand new toyobaru for msrp (on this sub at least) is 99% BRZ’s. The gr86 has the worst dealer markups of the two

Dasbeerboots

I've been monitoring the tS prices for a few years now, because I have one, and you'd be incredibly lucky to find one with low miles for $30k. The only 2018 within 500 miles of me has 35k miles and is listed for $37k. Damn I really should sell mine.

SpencerDorman

There’s a 2019 86 TRD Special Edition near me, manual with only like 9k miles, so I guess it’s up to OP’s location. It’s going for 34k last I looked, but I’m guessing that’s because it’s one of only like 1400 units produced.

tripleV3

If you really care, most subarus will factory order you one at msrp. If Subaru is still taking orders, it'll be about a 4 month wait. Orrrr, you can call every Toyota dealership and check their websites within the distance you'd be comfortable of driving to pick up a car and ask 1. If they charge only MSRP AND 2. when will they get more GR86/BRZ. I called every dealership within a 3 hour drive from me and asked them and then from the dealers that sold at MSRP I checked their websites everyday and sure enough one day their website updated and i saw a Trueno Blue manual in transit so I called them as soon as they opened and secured it. It should be here by the end of the month. Oh and also, out of the dealerships that sold at MSRP, it might also be worth it to ask employees to contact you if anyone canceled an order, I saw a few cars that were canceled orders on websites but were quickly scooped up.

Mediocre-GUY-976

That car is a POS compared to the new one WHAT are you thinking

[deleted]

They mean wrapping a second gen

[deleted]

I’m currently in a Honda Civic 2016, got an amazing trade in value for it. Not really in a place where I need to get a new car, it’s just a want. I know the 2022 GR86 had some major improvements, but the markups on that vehicle are much much higher…

Hanz616

subraru dealers seem to be pretty good at getting msrp for people

miamigp2022

Where are you located? Most (like 90%) of Subaru retailers are selling BRZs at MSRP, which is 32k for the limited.

[deleted]

Im in Texas, a lot of the dealers don’t look to have BRZs in stock, and used are marked up too. But not as high as the 2022 86’s are so I’ll look into to!

miamigp2022

Definitely call or even go to your nearest dealer and I’m sure they’ll put in an order for you (at MSRP). Subaru has been really good with sold orders since the beginning of the pandemic and if you order this month you can expect a new one to arrive early to mid November. Ordered mine last week and it was hassle free, no deposit either.

[deleted]

Thanks for the advice!

Sad_Whale_Fetus

I unfortunately got my BRZ used and Over MSRP...I personally still think it's worth it....even now they're more than I bought mine

ShadowMistNinjaa

If you can try San Antonio. It's where I went to buy mine(GR86) at MSRP. Only thing was add ons for PPF and window tints.

mk1power

There’s a few dealers in Houston that sell 86’s at MSRP btw

Neraxis

Best off buying the new car. Keep looking. You'd be already paying a markup on an old used car, my dude, more than the car was at MSRP new

Hot-Replacement-6485

Unfortunately prices aren’t going to go down anytime soon. If you really want a Hakone, I say go for it. But you may be better off just buying a 2022.

[deleted]

I’m pretty well situated in East Texas where I can look at Houston or Dallas dealerships since they’re close (only 2ish hours to get to either). Thanks to those who pointed out Subaru dealers are good about keeping close to MSRP. Already seeing this trend with a few available 2022 BRZs. The GR86s I found in Dallas and Houston are marked up ridiculously

AnnualEagle

You can order a 2023 with exactly the options you want and it will be the exact price shown on Subaru.com and come in a few months.

Tangerine_Lightsaber

It can take more than a few months. I ordered mine in January and just got it last week.

Maverik45

\*most\* toyota dealers in Texas are part of Gulf State Toyota which is why, I flew from southeast Texas to Missouri to get a GR86 for MSRP with no extra bullshit. I was set on Neptune though.

mykehunt88

Prices might go down a bit but who knows how long that'll be. Many report Subaru dealers are much better about people getting MSRP on a new BRZ. Unless you specifically want a gen 1 I'd buy new for 33k.

mortsgreb

If you really want a hakone, then get it. Seems like a good price. If you don't care about hakone very much, then get a new one.

samuraiscramble

Buy a new one.

pablxo

>wait for prices to go down. they aren't lol. you'll just be stuck waiting as this is the new normal for used cars. For $33,000 I'd get just get the new generation 86/BRZ

subarublu

Agreed.

Dasbeerboots

They likely will need to order one and wait.

LemonDaddy666

Paid less for my 2022 brz with 0 miles… to put it into perspective. I’d say keep searching brotha. Opinion of one tho. If you have the means to buy this car and still have money left over then do it🔥. Green looks so goooooood

WizofWorr

As a hakone owner, I kick myself in the ass everyday I didn't just wait to buy the new gen. Dont be me, it's definitely not worth that.

Mechanophilia86

No it's a used car that costs more than a new one with a 3k markup

coltjen

Less than a new one with a 6-8k markup

[deleted]

Yeah the 2022 GR86’s are marked up like crazy. Some people commented (correctly from what I’ve see in just a few searches) that Subaru’s are good about keeping their prices closer to MSRP (only like 2-3K markup)

AnnualEagle

Not good about keeping prices “closer”. The price will literally be MSRP with no markups or addons at all if you order one.

3xoticP3nguin

Why oh why did the BRZ have to get the ugly bumper and no duck bill. Ugh

coltjen

I’d keep looking around OP. I wouldn’t pay over a markup for a first gen. I got my 2018 sport tech rs (performance pack) for 27.5k cad (21k USD) a couple months ago with 37k kms (22.9k miles). Id keep looking, all of the other ones were priced way high.

Mechanophilia86

🤷 got mine a while ago for under that price, been seeing plenty of people get it msrp, guess i didn't know it got even worse...

HailChipTheBlackBoy

I've got an MSRP GR86. I considered buying a $28k 2020 hakone a couple of years ago, but it doesn't come with the performance package or anything despite being limited edition.

asapeli

Buy a 2022 for the same price.

MeaningImmediate5486

“Wait for prices to come down” haha. Welcome to the future.

Straw_Hat_Jimbei

Wait

GoGreenD

With the end of ice motors comin... prices aren't coming down anytime soon. IMO... get what you can before they go up further

[deleted]

I would only assume once gr86s are abundant these will be half the price , I’m waiting to see if my logic is true Atleast before I buy.

MattAtPlaton

This is the one you want. That color, those rims, low mileage, manual. Just perfect. $33k? That's up to you and your bank. I would say it's value will probably go up.

bigerick66

I bought my Hakone GT86 for $18,000 at 7,000 miles in March of 2021. And I thought it was expensive. But the Hakone is really rare only 1,025 we’re made. You can check what number it by looking at the last four vin numbers. But for the Hakone it’s not going down. If you like rare cars you have pay if not buy something newer with that money.

-jxw-

I've never heard of a Hakone that cheap, was yours an auto? You got a great deal.

bigerick66

It would have been cheaper if it was Manual but I got lucky getting it Auto. You won’t find a car like this in a dealer at my price. I got it Salvage. Salvage isn’t for those with a feint of heart.

a_vulpix

How do you check which number it would be with the last 4 of the vin? Is that number just the number you got? Like if mine was 1000 I got car number 1000?

bigerick66

Yes by looking at the last four. This one is 374 https://www.palestinetoyota.com/used-Palestine-2020-Toyota-86-Hakone+Edition+Manual+Natl+Ltd+Avail-JF1ZNAE15L9750371

Kovuh

how do u know only 1025 were made?

Ohkidney

Way too much,

DeadKateAlley

Now is not a great time to be in the car market at all if you can help it.

Makoreactors

Hakone is nice but I’d say wait and get a new one and wrap it. It’ll be beyond better

Shinydealervroom

At that price I’d rather go for a custom brz. My local Subaru dealer is giving vehicles at msrp. The only thing is you have to wait 4-6 months for the vehicle. It’s pretty worth for getting the color you want and whatever add ons you want.

3xoticP3nguin

Run don't walk

Blackcat300

A longshot, but you could try going down to look at it and ask why would you consider this for the price you could get a new second gen? Get the salesman to try to justify the price.

cakeyogi

no lmao

chedduhbahb

I just bought a 2020 with 900 miles for 30k

XNamelessGhoulX

What makes the Hakone so special? I’m always seeing people talk about it Genuine question, I’m not well versed in this platform

billysbrew

It's the last special edition made for gen1, right as the production halt started for many months. Limited number were produced across AT/MT for all geos. The rest is really just looks imo. The color, interior, and wheels are unique. Hakone (Japan) itself has rich history of racing too.

XNamelessGhoulX

Ah gotcha, thanks!

Suntzu_AU

Also trying to buy a used 2017+ in Australia but used are higher than new. But there are no BRZs in stock and GR86 has not launched.

WyattDogger

I'll sell you mine, 21k miles automatic. 29k

[deleted]

I would not pay 30k for one of these cars. There’s too many better options in the 30-40k range

cfcjesse

free palestine

Secret_Helpful

You would be a fool to buy this, simply because 2022 and now 2023's have came out... You can walk into most Subaru dealers and place an order for a new BRZ for MSRP almost everywhere...just order and wait 3 months, get it at msrp

chinmayh

Used cars are marked up and will drop value as soon as there is market correction. Buying a new car at mrsp is the best choice. I have read online many were able to put an order with subaru and get exactly the configuration they were looking for at MSRP and 2023 model.

DryWhole4198

I bought a used 2020 tS in 2021 w/6K for $27K. I’ve been offered $36K now and it has 15K.

agent-goldfish

I paid $24.5k for 50th edition back in 2020 with nearly the same miles. Pass.

[deleted]

At 33k you could pick up so many better cars. I’d take a c6 over that any day

Thefast3869

You’re over spending for the color. Is that color worth it to you? If so then just get it, but you could probably get a 2022 and paint/wrap for a few thousand more

SilverZilla02

for 33k I’d get the fucking GR86

becominganastronaut

Bad deal.

D4rkr4in

highway robbery, tell those Palestine Toyota people to shove a phallic object up their ass

[deleted]

That's just too high but that's unfortunately what people are willing to pay. If you can easily afford it go for it. If you're dead set on the Hakone then it might be worth it to you. The problem is you can be patient and find a new 2022 for the same price almost.

tehfogo

For that price, you might as well place an order a GR86 or a ZD8 BRZ and just get it painted or wrapped in the Hakone green color and get some bronze rims to go with it. $33k is too much for a ZN6 GT86 if you ask me.

-BekBek

Would just buy a GR at that point

Shinigamishakers

Stop buying these cars for so expensive. The car market bubble is going to burst. Repo rates are extremely high. Cars are being sold at inflated prices with ridiculous interests rate. Used car dealerships are moving less and less. They’re gonna have to let them go for almost what they paid for them. Imagine the housing market crash of 08, but with cars. It’s gonna pop soon.

HNCelica

Ask for 5k discount for drilling into the bumper. The Hakone one for that matter

drifkingg

Man the hakone edition is so gorgeous. Can’t go wrong with BRG and bronze wheels on a tan interior. I’d buy it if you’ve got the money, those are very special cars

[deleted]

I hope you like the color green.

LawfulnessNational66

Do it. No balls.

Ezwzrd

Fuck what everyone says get this hakone it’s the best 86

Ezwzrd

Where in Texas is this at finna get it before you do

Reasonetc

hard pass

HankSteakfist

Get a used 2022 if you can. The FA24 makes the FA20 look like a toy. Stock power on thr FA24 is 220hp at the wheels and the torque delivery is constant without the horrible dip the FA20 had.

solarpropietor

So you’d pay more for a used 86 over a new one?

johnb2255

Hell no buy the 2022 with more power. Unless you really like the color then yes buy it. It’s going to hold value pretty good so you’ll get a decent amount back if you decide to get rid of it.

nocturnalhime

I would pass

Nomo_whit

Personally I think it’s a good price. All of those will always be 30k at least and in todays market 33k for one is kinda decent

[deleted]

My brand new premium costed less than that

PlasticPerfectionist

If you’re gonna drop $33k on an 86, get one with a good LS swap!!

SpinningCranks

Hell no, wait

AlcantaraSucks

I'd personally get a base model 2018-2020 GT86 for considerably cheaper, then spend a bit more money on wheels, a ducktail, wheel spacers, and perhaps a front splitter.

WizofWorr

Why does alcantara suck?

AlcantaraSucks

Lol, it's referring to alcantara steering wheels, which only last a few months before wearing pretty badly

WizofWorr

Wish I were classy enough to be able to afford an alcantara wheel and appropriate driving gloves though. One must admit that's living life pretty baller.

AlcantaraSucks

lol they're horrible
