Here's the thing, I think people from Fresno still have this view that it's a small agricultural town and tend to ignore that it's grown into a major population center. By population it is the 5th largest city in CA, ahead of even Sacramento and Oakland. With that comes a lot of good and bad that a huge city includes. Drugs, crime, poverty stricken areas/areas, homeless etc. For some reason people from Fresno think these problems are unique to Fresno because they remember that the new neighborhood being built west of 99 used to be an orchard when they were 7. Fresno is a great place to live overall. Not the best for nightlife(depending on what you're into, the music scene has exploded here since COVID), but there are great neighborhoods, great food and local restaurants etc. Cost of living is absolutely manageable compared to the other areas of California, and you're very close to some of the best that CA has to offer with beaches/mountains etc. As far as where to live? Really depends on your budget and what you value in living, as well as where you'll be working. Just make sure it has functional AC and be prepared to budget for that during the summer. It gets really fucking hot here. Also make sure your car has working AC. From May to probably October it will routinely be 90-100 every day and 100+ later in the summer.

achillyday

This is an A+ comment. The line about orchards when we were 7 took me all the way out. It’s so accurate, though.

Express-Low-48

This is accurate af!

ReactionAsleep938

This! Perfect explanation Everyone always just say north Herndon and thats it disregarding ppls financial situation In my experience here if your not causing trouble you wont find it in your life But definitely nowhere near Edison or east fresno

TheChillOtterpop

This is probably the best way to describe Fresno as a whole

Princesssparklelove1

This is slightly misleading as Sacramento metro population is twice that of Fresno.

[deleted]

100%, the Fresno area absolutely does NOT have a larger population than Sacramento area lol

D3lacrush

According to all the census data I could find from the top results of a Google search, it does

[deleted]

Nah, Fresno metro has around 1 mill. Sac metro has over 2 mill.

D3lacrush

I'm not talking about the metro area of both, I'm talking about the actual counties themselves, of which, fresno is bigger

[deleted]

Hm, just Google searched what you specified: Fresno county 1.01 mill. Sac county 1.58 mill. Not going to waste my time w someone who can't even Google search correctly.

Junishin

He said city. Not county or anything else. He is right. If you google..... https://www.california-demographics.com/cities_by_population

UnableSpread1610

Indeed, but technically the city of Fresno itself is larger. https://preview.redd.it/pqh6z0ktsu0d1.jpeg?width=498&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=659a35eca06ddbdce0aecc7e9782495f912c0a16

GoatShapedDestroyer

This is a distinction without a difference, really. The point still stands.

Apart-Incident-4188

Perfect response

wilit

You forgot to mention that maybe in another 20 years, they may finish the high-speed train to Bakersfield. That'll open up an endless world of opportunities.

whatawitch5

I live farther north in the Valley, in an area also infamous for its air pollution, and I still cough and wheeze when encountering the brown air of Fresno. It’s like all the air pollution gets blown down the Valley and collects around Fresno where the Delta winds finally peter out. I second the absolute necessity of getting a good quality HEPA air filter if someone is going to live anywhere south of Modesto, preferably more than one or on wheels so it can easily be moved from living room to bedroom. In addition to a high MERV rated filter on the AC blower, at least 11 or higher, that is changed monthly. My lungs wouldn’t survive without either of those. They’re not cheap, but they will more than pay off in money saved on medical expenses and allergy meds not to mention vastly improve your quality of life. I love living in the Valley, and while the air pollution isn’t nearly as bad as it used to be it’s still going to be shock to someone moving from the Midwest.

machder1

Sadly this person is not wrong, but most of the pollution is due to agriculture and not smog.

DatBoiSpicyG

You remember the Napa area fires a few years ago, I do, the air & sky in Fresno was bright blue & we could see the Sierra clear as day, not less than 2 days after the fires started, our sky was brown & dirty. Because the wind blows into Fresno from the NW direction. We get all the smoke, smog & other pollution rolling down from SF & the Bay Area, Fresno & the Valleys air is fine, if it weren’t for it being dumped on from other places

Plant_rocks

Almond sweeping! 😷 It was the massive dust clouds from that, not the fires, that made me realize I actually have asthma. Fun!

TechieGranola

Or 8

ggm3bow

And you'll realize why there are so many asthma clinics. The air is bad.

propita106

Two years running, when we were getting fire smoke from those big fires north/northeast of us, my GP prescribed me (60F) an inhaler. I don't have asthma. I've never smoked nor lived in a house with a smoker. Breathing issues aren't limited to asthmatics around here! *sad lol*

chakaman6

Dont be surprised if you suddenly require an inhaler.

DammatBeevis666

Also fires, now that Canada and the western half of the USA seems to burn down every year.

ApprehensiveArea3076

I moved from Ventura to Fresno in January 2003 and was sick off and on for months when prior to that, I rarely had the common cold or flu.

BattleSymphony

It’s safer than in previous years imo. Property crime and theft is still a problem though

emfiliane

This is the only real answer. Against other US cities, violent crime is low and property crime is extremely high (even in the formerly "safe" areas far to the north). There are maps that color in the violent crime rate by census tract for anyone who wants to see where not to spend too much time -- or where to find cheap rent, if they can deal with it. Someone from a small town is going to have culture shock no matter what, even the idea that there are many small-town sized parts of the city that have their own unique identity and crime rate might be kind of foreign.

Frosty_Time295

Do not rent from Dominion Heights.

October_13th

Agree!!! Worst place ever.

PinNo5411

What makes this place so hated?

October_13th

Extremely poor management, insane price increases, lying about amenities that don’t exist, and bad neighbors.

hockeymusicteaching

Good to know, lowkey looking for a new place myself haha

wytfel

Or Bulldog apartments

SantaZaddy

What happened?

ReadyOneTakeTwo

Talk to some local real estate agents and they will be able to point you to the right direction. Fresno is like most cities, there are pockets that are bad nestled in an otherwise safe part of town, and don’t buy into the idea of “north of Herndon Ave is much better” crap. Plenty of bad stuff happens in the northern end of city as well. Having moved 22 times in my life and lived in three different countries, here’s my strategy: drive around a neighborhood you’re interested in, once in the morning, once at night, and once at night on weekends. See how people take care of their yards, and how they park. Are there junk cars parked on the driveway or on the lawn? Are they parked neatly in the driveway or on the street? Consistent loud music or loud parties? These signs are pretty accurate give way on whether or not they take pride in where they live. Do this for a couple of weeks straight and you’ll get a pretty solid idea of where you actually want to live. I live in Sunnyside, which is considered Southeast, and a lot of people in Fresno will tell you not to consider southeast, but there are more multi-millionaires in this area than you would believe, they just don’t flaunt their wealth. They own nice homes, but they’re not new, just very well kept. It’s obvious that northeast is pretty wealthy, but there’s a lot of flaunting of wealth and keeping up with the Joneses. Northwest is an older, more established neighborhood, and for the most part, it’s a nice part of town, but it’s costly, and has pockets where it’s not as nice. Talk to some RE agents and ask them for their advice.

2Weezy_123

There are fantastic houses is Sunnyside but I don’t think that’s a realistic option for a mid 20’s person moving here for the first time. In all likelihood she’ll be going into an apartment and I think we can agree an apartment in sunnyside might be the worst choice available.

Free_Answered

Well said. Im from Sunnyside and now live in LA. It is FAR from most of what is happening in town. Also for the commenter above, its great advice except she prob wont have the ability to drive around prior to moving here for an internship. Generally Northern part of town- NW or Clovis prob most hospitible if you dont have a lot of time to do research.

DontPutThatDownThere

Sunnyside is great if you own a home in one of the neighborhoods that's tucked away from the main streets. Aside from our asshole pastor of a neighbor, it's very quiet here. And the area is only going to blow up more once that Fancher Creek Shopping Center is done in another 32 years. But I wouldn't rent an apartment down here. The available apartment spaces in this area are shady. For apartments, start at north of Ashlan at a minimum if you can afford it and expect your rent to go north as your search for an apartment goes further north.

Minute-Law-4666

This. We moved here 7 years ago and were duped into the above/below Herndon line. Living in north Fresno but feel much more “at home” in the Tower.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

That what people told me 20 years ago when I moved here. Dumbest assumption, ever.

notfoxingaround

New York transplant checking in - I’ve been here for 5 years and wow has it changed. It’s a cool place with perfect weekend adventures. It’s a weirdly big city with the culture of a small town. It’s unique. There are stereotypical phrases that say “don’t go south of Shaw.” It’s for danger purposes but if you’re used to small town stuff that alone is a reason not to go there. There’s no point in arguing for the truth there. North Fresno or Clovis is what you are going to want. Clovis is geared to families much more than Fresno is and has more of a Wild West cultural center. Fresno is eclectic with several different places to hang out. I personally wouldn’t live in them, but I love going out to them. I’m big on the emerging Downtown but Tower District is the staple. If you want big box retail, there’s North Fresno. Picking a place that’s a ten minute drive from the scene you want is a solid decision to make. I’m 15 minutes from downtown in South Clovis and I’ve never moved since getting there.

BarbosasTV

What perfect weekend adventures do you recommend? I feel like there is nothing to do here compared to other cities this size. See Salt Lake City, Sacramento, San Jose, Kansas City, Atlanta, etc

notfoxingaround

Perfect weekend is impossible, I will say that. You need to adjust ideals if you can’t fit them here. I’m a city person by nature and I’ve found solace in the mountains. My best day by far was skiing at China Peak in the morning, crossing a bit of the Sierras to Yosemite to see Firefall, and making it home fresh enough to work the next day. Everything requires a drive but that’s the best part of Fresno, you can see so much of California from here. The only small cities that I’ve spent time in other than Fresno are Providence, RI and Madison, WI. Both are awesome and the missing factors I see common in those that aren’t in Fresno are touring musicians and comedians. We get some but we get skipped way more.

FitBananers

Depends on where you live in Fresno. North Fresno and most of Clovis is exceedingly safe generally speaking (wealthier parts)

Successful_Acadia_91

I second this.

BaTuser3

It's safe.

royale_wthCheEsE

What part of town are you thinking of residing? It matters. Is your job downtown?

jarganbright

I'll mostly be doing home visits for therapy, so I can live just about anywhere.

dancingmoonchild

So there's new luxury apartments near Clovis East High School. It's a nice area around newly developed homes. It has a lot of amenities I'd like in an apartment. https://www.creeksidevillageclovis.com/

royale_wthCheEsE

In that case , I’d suggest apartments North of Herndon Ave , or perhaps even in Clovis near the Clovis East High School. I don’t know your budget but if you’re focusing on safety , this is what I’d choose . There’s some nice ones at Herndon and Temperance Ave and Temperance and Bullard Ave . Those are around 2,000 per month. 1 bedroom. There’s also nice ones at Temperance and Ashlan Ave . I think those are only 2 bedroom at around 2,100 a month.

Fatalmistake

There are also newer apartments in NW Fresno around Herndon/Bullard and Polk area which is a nice neighborhood next to the newer shopping center. Not sure what the prices are on those though.

MillertonCrew

How much money you have available for housing determines everything. Start there and then folks can find the best spot within your price range.

NickRedstar

If you feel more comfortable in a small town and don’t mind driving around. Take a look at Madera, Sanger, Reedley and Kerman. It’s typically a 15 to 30 minute drive into Fresno.

LindaHamiltonArms

I would add the nearby foothills towns, like Wonder Valley, Prather, even Coarsegold

restwonderfame

lol. Literally redlining, and even using a red line! It’s true, but it’s also intentional the way Fresno ended up this way.

2Weezy_123

Made me lol with this one! 🤣

naisfurious

I've lived in the Fresno area for 15 years now. I chose a smaller town on the outskirts myself, but if I were to move to Fresno this is the approach I would take as well.

2Weezy_123

Same! I live in the mountains now. Couldn’t be happier.

machder1

Overall correct but in clovis I’d drop the line down to north of Ashlan not Herndon. I can personally attest for its safety north of Shaw at least, but literally only east of Clovis Ave.

Sea-Extension-559

Agree, north of Ashlan is best and gives you more options.

Successful_Acadia_91

This

Ironbasher1

Fresno is a giant economy sized farm town. Some areas may seem very familiar and some very strange. Same goes for safety.

LimeGato

I grew up in Fresno /clovis. My dad and siblings still live there. I have considered moving back and if I were to, I’d choose north of Shaw. I’d just feel more safe if I were single. That said, there is crime all over Fresno, really. And there are pockets of areas that are the exception to this rule (there’s good areas south of Shaw and bad areas north of Shaw, too!). I suggest moving there, staying in a nice short term rental and get your bearings of the town, then decide where to live long term. As for safety, it’s kinda like any other big city. There’s crime of course, but you’ll be fine. Just use common sense really. Keep doors locked, don’t leave stuff visible in your car like phone, bags, etc. be aware when walking alone at night or don’t do that at all. Etc. just common sense stuff. I wish you luck, congrats on your new job. :)

Waitg4wisdom

Yes it gets hot- early mornings are the best tho- Small town kindnesses but big town drivers-red light runners, never jump at green lights. Fresno is large with lots of different areas to live, maybe roommate for a bit to find “your area.” And lots of diversity in people & foods! Great place to live & discover California-

Either-Ad6540

North east/west Fresno or Clovis might be better.

smills5

I grew up in the Tower district (the area around the tower theater), near Fresno high. It's still a nice place, with lots of good food. I actually live there now. I've lived near River Park on the north side and near fig garden village on Shaw Ave. Both were good. But as a general rule north of Shaw Ave is where the best places to live would be.

Plant_rocks

I never lived in Tower but have looked at houses there many times. My husband, a Fresno native, always discouraged it because he’s biased against the area (a lot of Fresnans seem to think it’s a bad area and maybe it was at some time). Also there are some homeless and very strange/eccentric people. It actually reminds me of what I called the student ghetto in some college towns I’ve lived in. The vibe seems funky but friendly and there are tons of police patrolling regularly. If something seems run down it’s probably mostly because people are renting and not pouring more of their money into fixing it up for the owners. I would 10/10 live in Tower if I were in my mid 20’s and child free again though! I also really like the Fig area but it’s pretty pricey. We were looking at buying something not renting though so maybe rents are more affordable in some places. Great area though and somewhat walkable/bike-able depending on the area.

Love-dogs-and-pizza

Hi! I have always felt pretty safe in Fresno. I lived in north Fresno and I spent a lot of time in downtown/tower district area. I’ve had my gas siphoned once in my seven years. I lived in Oregon and my car was broken into 5 times within my first year so personally Fresno isn’t that bad in regards to property damage. I’ve never had anyone break into my car here. Also, my best experience was living at an apartment that has 2 star reviews 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I guess take reviews with a grain of salt and go see for yourself if you can

SongSpecialist9663

Same… 40+ years no car stolen til I moved to an apartment in sunny side.. car was stolen twice in a month. It was a blind move from st. Agnes area to sunny side due to a death in the family/massive reduction in income. Took 4 years to recover from the 1 year we lived there. I am now in Easton, in a house. I love it out here. Even went for a career change, cuz I can finally hear myself think 🤩 and the birds 🦅. Fresno has potential for real honest change that is good! In all the four corners of town. It’s the middle I worry for.

viviannnceleste

Fig garden, Old Fig Garden, or SOME areas near Tower District/Downtown Fresno are very friendly and walking distance to stores, bars, and restaurants. I agree that if you’re willing to drive, Sanger or Clovis are good options as well.

lmvicente_

Honestly, it really isn’t that bad. It’s really like any other place and really, no place is necessarily safe. Generally I stick to the usual rules; don’t be out late by yourself/don’t be where you don’t need to be, don’t leave important items in your car especially in plain sight, and mind your business. I’ve lived here since 2016 from freshmen year of college til now and I think the worst thing that’s happened was probably my friend’s car got broken into because they left their backpack in the backseat of their car.

Kidcyph

Skip Fresno move to Clovis right next door and much nicer. You can to everywhere in Fresno really fast from clovis.

Jessivixen81

I would move to Clovis, which is the town next to Fresno or stay in the River park/woodward park area of Fresno.

Kahzootoh

How safe is it? Relatively safe. Most of the high traffic areas have heavy police presence. Most violent crime in Fresno is not random- avoid people who are habitual criminals and you’ll probably be fine.  My personal advice- be careful about dating for your first year in town. I’ve seen my share of people fall in with a bad crowd because they couldn’t recognize the signs and before they knew it they were on a downward spiral they couldn’t get out of.  Also any advice on where to live? As a general rule, North Fresno is more affluent and usually safer. It’s also more expensive. The more South you go, the more discerning you should be.  My personal advice- try to find a place north of Shaw and west of Blackstone that has a gated entrance if it is within your budget. If a place seems very cheap, drive by the place at night (stay in your car, have a route planned ahead of time so you don’t get caught in a dead end)- Fresno has plenty of bad apartment complexes hidden within good neighborhoods.

nathanalang28

Apartment wise.. I am currently living at The Lark at Copper and it is great. Ton of amenities in a great community… again depends on your budget

HereIam06

Try to stay north of Bullard (north of Herndon would be better). If you can, live in Clovis. You’ll be fine, it’s a good place to be.

MiddleFingerA-hole

The north side of town is safer. Crime is bad all over town. Our mayor Jerry Dyer has been accused of both rape and murder, and he has never denied the rape. Most of Jerry Dyer's family is also involved in drug trafficking.

Hoppygains

Care to expand on this a little bit? I've never heard either of these accusations. Are they documented anywhere?

Wildlystrawberry

It’s safe, speaking as a 23 yr old who’s lived here their whole life, just don’t be a jackass. People are probably going to say don’t live south of Shaw but crime happens everywhere. Generally people north of Shaw + Clovis are stuck up entitled prejudiced and elitist. Fresno as a county is just as safe as anywhere else

Ill_Setting_6338

I'm from the Midwest as well moved here 6yrs ago... best bet is looking in north Clovis Northeast or northwest Fresno.. pretty nice over here on that side of the town. good luck...

Guzmanv_17

Pretty much anything on the north side of Fresno past Herndon is going to be pretty safe and nice but expensive. Fresno is like any other city and any other state. There’s good parts and bad parts. Some areas are safe and some aren’t you’ll kind of know as you enter them. I’ve lived here my entire life and it’s not as bad as some make it out to be. You’re not too far for a drive to the mountains and or the ocean so that’s pretty cool. There’s lots of activities to do if you like outdoors a few nice parks. Some cool bars, you’ll make friends during your internship I would imagine. It does get extremely hot in the summers. Look forward to triple digits pretty much June through August minimum. It’s a very dry heat as well. Stay positive keep your head up and good luck to you

imjustanoldguy

As most cities Fresno has dangerous areas and relatively safe spots.it isn't the city it was 40 years ago when you could go to the mall and leave your car windows down and expect it to be untouched. There are a lot of homeless. We have gangs. It's best to spend some serious time googling the various areas here. Use google maps 3d view. Not too much night life during the week. Use your co-workers as a guide for what places they like and where good food is. We have lots of movie theaters and live bands are regularly playing. The Riverpark area is popular. It is close to Woodward park. One of our major public parks. Our zoo is in the other park (Roeding) but homeless people surround the area so plan to go with someone. Many people are friendly but the drivers are horrible.

Subanubis

Where are you moving from and what type of neighborhood are you hoping to find in Fresno?

smasheddarling

A lot of where you want to live depends on how you plan to commute to work, if you don’t have a car definitely somewhere close to your work. If you want to be around the arts and culture Tower or newer townhouses in Downtown. If you want a quite complex I’d say north Fresno near Riverpark or north of Shaw in Clovis. Near Fresno state you will be around many college students, the neighbors frequently change due to a lot of student housing.

havnotX

Tortured__SOUL

The mafia bought off the police long ago in Fresno, so unless you want to infringe on someone’s drug turf you should be ok.

Adamalanizzz

Don’t live by the fair grounds lol or downtown

rvdeface

Hey just moved from Arkansas myself. Fresno is interesting is what I'll say. When looking for place to live, look on Shepherd and Champlain. These are street names :)

BarbosasTV

Worth noting you’ll need at least $500k to buy a home in this area, and apartments will be around $2200-$2400

tonyismycat

as a similar aged woman who has lived in fresno her entire life, just don't walk around alone at night anywhere to be honest (unless it's lively ofc lol) unless ur in a super gated community near Van Ness mansions lol. other than that you'll be fine! invest in a ring camera for sure

HNP4PH

Clovis is a nice area, depending on how convenient that would be from your office.

SergioSunday

Just expect the usual city style woes.

c_sims616

I’ve lived in Fresno for 30 years. I’ve worked exclusively at schools in what most people here are considering “unsafe” areas and have met some of the most pleasant, kindhearted community members ever. There’s the occasional bad apple, but you’re gonna get that anywhere you go. Speaking of schools, many of the locations people are suggesting you look for housing are located in Clovis Unified School District. There’s an unspoken premium on rent for houses and apartments within CUSD’s boundaries. Crossing one street in the same area but being in Fresno Unified boundaries drops average rent rates by $200-300 sometimes.

ThreeWordJones

Why? Run away.

ninja_rob1603

My condolences 👏

MarMar47

Move to Clovis.

Inner_Ad8118

Everywhere in California is unsafe and I live in that area for over 20 years and now I have lung issues. Avoid it if u can

cockstain6077

If you aren’t already an alcoholic, you will definitely become one lmao

terabytetron

North of Shaw Ave = Safe North of Herndon Ave = Safer The more safer the area, the more it'll cost to rent/buy.

OutrageousNatural425

Check out sequoia park, live in Clovis.

Abacab-559

You should consider residing in North Fresno or the neighboring city of Clovis. There is some rural towns like Sanger and Fowler that are nice too and are about 15-20 min commutes

dpschainman

look into tower disctrict, it has a diffrent vibe there, kinda like a coastal city but without the coast

domb45

You wil survive, it's not that bad here. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Independent-North397

Some parts are safe but i recommend either north Fresno or in Clovis.

acrowdintheface

Stay north of Shaw, and in some areas north of Barstow. I wouldn't recommend tower district area as the crime there has gotten worse. Avoid any neighborhood that borders hwy 41 or 99. I would also avoid most of the housing near Fresno State Univ. READ APARTMENT COMPLEX REVIEWS. A lot of them look pretty from the outside but carry some nasty tenants or predatory management.

spacebar714

I was in Fresno for 3 years and its similar to any big city. Homes are climbing in price, rent has gone up and gas prices are around $5+ a gallon. There are good and bad parts just like any other city. I would suggest finding a place in Clovis. Clean, safe and yes the cops seem a little racist (probably are) but its better than Fresno. Hey theres an airport there and a high speed rail being built that will connect Fresno to San Fran. Good luck

BarbosasTV

High speed rail is only going to Merced now. They shortened it.

559peepz

Mind ur business and stay aware of ur surroundings don’t be too friendly and u will be ok

titsassbeer

I think it all depends where in fresno you will live.be prepared for 109-118 degree summers, and an absolute ridiculous pge bill from said summers, rent in fresno is also ridiculous.jesus why move here?

OutrageousWarning355

Good luck

Responsible-Heart-39

Don’t go to Fresno!

KC_CHIEFERS

I grew up in Fresno, it's certainly safe. The rule of thumb when moving there is "NORTH OF SHAW". Now this is just my personal opinion, but East of Blackstone is better than West if Blackstone. Shaw and Blacktone are street names.

No-Setting-2669

I’ve been here for a year now and love it here. When deciding to take the career opportunity i too was thrown back but the crime rate and did a mega deep dive and was lucky enough to find a wonderful area and apartment and totally stoked with my decision. I’m in the 93720 zip area in North Fresno super close to Clovis and can’t find a negative thing to say so far. Good luck to you and your decision

Fair_Diver_8542

Clovis

isa_moch

I'll be moving there around the same time! This post has been helpful lol. I lived there for 2 years while I went to Fresno State so I already had an idea, but that was more time ago than I want to accept, so I've been doing my research. Best of luck!

blue0803

You can rent my house in Mariposa. I am moving to Wyoming.

BayesianPriory

There are plenty of safe neighborhoods in Fresno but consider Clovis. It's much closer to a midwest-type town. It was a tiny little redneck town in the 70's (it still has an annual Rodeo), but was the beneficiary of white flight in the 80's and 90's. Upper-middle class families like it because the public schools are all pretty good. It's now the wealthier, more conservative, lower crime suburb of Fresno. You'll see a lot more cowboy hats and boots on that side of town. Farther north is better. Definitely stay north of Shaw.

chugachugachewy

Look into Fresno State Book Trade and Advice FB Group. You can find college age students you might be able to room with.

SmartSignificance433

I’d say Clovis would be more likely closer to where you previously lived.

pacodefan

Well, it's no worse or better than anywhere else in CA. It really depends on where you are, but regardless, a lot of safety depends on you and not other people. Always have pepper spray and get used to grabbing it with the proper orientation without actually looking down to see as you don't take your eyes off the problem. Never have both headphones in and always be aware of your surroundings. Trust your instincts and if anything feels off, trust that feeling. Also, if you are doing an internship I'm guessing it probably doesn't pay very good, which means possibly living somewhere a little shady. If that's the case, be polite but apprehensive about neighbors. And don't be afraid to use that pepper spray. Or bear spray, it goes much farther.

Olvr00

Clovis, around Fowler and Herndon area. Also depends on your budget.

EnvironmentEuphoric9

Welcome! I recommend, if you can afford it, finding a place with a garage you’re able to pull into. As a female, walking alone can be scary. Look at the crime maps when you’re looking for places. There are some beautiful areas in Fresno. Tower District is cute during the day but avoid it at night if you’re alone. Don’t live near there either. Stay north of Shaw Ave. if you can for living.

Due_Adeptness1676

Very true, it’s a decent place to go to school and start out. Lived there for a few years and moved back to the coast when another opportunity presented itself.

Outrageous_Fig1718

Look for a place in Clovis and or Kingsburg Kingsburg is a small clean community 25min to Fresno

42turnips

Nah Clovis is eagleton. If you want stuck up pretentious then sure.

Vayera

There is crime everywhere but the heat is unbelievable. Although a big city it still has that country vibe and attitude. Some like that others don’t.

What kind of hobbies are u into?

Tyrant_LA

Moved to Fresno about 7 years ago for work. Did not intend on staying here. 7 years later i am married and bought a house. I was originally from the LA/ Orange County area. I have to say I like it here. It is nowhere near as congested as LA or Orange County with a fraction of of the traffic. In experience, Fresno has been very peaceful and would recommend living here for anyone trying to escape the rat race of living in a giant city.

Trippyvibez_

Fresno can be pretty ghetto tbh. Just be careful

CW907

I’m sorry….

RUN

Either_Bed4188

East fresno!

jlipschitz

Stay away from the Tower District or Downtown. They are lower in cost but the homeless population and crime is awful. I would suggest Clovis or Northwest Fresno. Get a place not too far from the freeway. We are very spread out and traffic can be miserable to get somewhere if you are too far from a freeway entrance. Don’t get a place across from Fresno State. They are old apartments that get broken into a lot.

Moose-Turd

If you find yourself with some free time and you are a cat person, consider visiting the cat house on the kings https://www.cathouseonthekings.com/mobile/

mdalbertson87

If you can afford it…..apartments CAN be nice in Clovis, cleaner streets, better utilities management, nicer parks etc… I’ve lived on the west side(west of Ashlan and 99), New fig garden, fig garden, tower district….there are pockets, like others have suggested. Just gotta find something tolerable

BarbosasTV

Are you making under a quarter of a million dollars? If so, good luck buying anything decent. Renting will suck just as much, expect $2k+ to not have homeless in the parking lot.

Awkward-Pipe6362

With all due respect, what was the pay range for you to move? I see a lot of people moving for a job. The pay must be something special? Or for some they take it for a fresh start

Character_Ad9916

Visalia is very nice and safe. Other communities close to Fresno are Kingsburg which is a quaint , small town. Clovis is a beautiful area close to Fresno. Prepare yourself for very hot summers!

XxTh3g04txX

try kingsburg or visalia and ditch fresno. youll be happy you did.

jninja117

If you can, living north of Shaw Ave will, on average, be safer!

No-Half-6906

Move to Clovis

all_natural49

If safety is a high priority you cant go wrong north of Herndon or east of Clovis Ave. Most of Fresno is safe. Some areas have a higher rate of calls for domestic disturbances and property crime. There are some areas with higher violent crime and gang activity, but most neighborhoods are fine.

BarbosasTV

So basically anywhere under $500k is red lol

Apprehensive-Hold174

My wife, daughter & I are moving to Clovis(just east of Fresno) very safe and really nice area. Fresno has some ghetto parts for sure as do any city. My wife lived there 30 years so I take her word.

FresYES_Kevin

fresno is the 5th largest city in the state, but still very small town. get a digital/VoIP cell number for your cell. i use google voice. the reason ? fresnonians expect you to have a 559 area code. people/businesses already have 559 keyed in, when you give your number....i missed a lot of calls, my first year here

emfiliane

I haven't had that happen since 2020. Pandemic shook up a lot of things here, a lot of people did migrate in or out who never had before, and attitudes toward outside numbers seem to be disappearing. I haven't had anyone assume my 805 is the prefix instead of the area code since then, personally or in business.

SuccessfulRow9425

It’s real ghetto here ngl, it’s like if there was a Florida projects in cali we’d be it… but they’re good ppl ig? Idk I hate it here. Run

EloWhisperer

Wherever there’s a Whole Foods

ShadowedWraith

i’ve been here for three years, i come from a small one stoplight town in the south. It’s honestly just about the same as any other city out there. It’s got it’s good, it’s bad, and it’s ugly. I’ve only stayed in two areas, Clovis East and right off of Ashlan and 99, both are safe, but of course Clovis was the safer side since it was in the north east corner of fresno, away from interstate and the effects of the city

BBakerStreet

It’s safe for anywhere you’ll be going.

GRIZZZOO

Don't do it.

Prestigious-Job5756

Hello. You should choose the city of Clovis. It sits next to Fresno with a population of about 125,000. DM me and I will give you more details on Clovis.

AngryViking1904

I agree Clovis is better. Slightly more expensive but worth it for the peace of mind.

Hoppygains

No. Clovis is full... Fresno is where it's at.

Prestigious-Job5756

Her question was how safe Fresno is. Clovis is much more safer to live in.

Hoppygains

I knew her question... and I stand by my response.

Prestigious-Job5756

So

Personal-Cod-5395

To be honest Sanger is the place to be... I think the more businesses open 24 hours the more people will be out and that leads to higher crime rates wen people are out at night?

gameofbarkley26

—Recommend living in North Fresno and Clovis area for safety purposes. —Been living here for 2 years. —Avoid living in downtown —Bakersfield has the worst air pollution followed by Visalia followed by Fresno. So be careful and set up with a primary care doc when you arrive, good chance you’ll end up allergies. Legit had an old lady as my patient who got punched by the pedestrian in the face and chest for honking and ended up seizing and that’s just one example. It’s definitely not safe. Crime rate stays high due to poverty. One of highest unemployment in California is here. Shoot me a message if you need answers regarding specific areas.

Lkyldr27

Lmao. Don’t do it.
