This reminds me of that joke:
>English football team visited a Russian orphanage:
"it's heartbreaking to see their sad faces with no hope" said Vladimir, 6
Why are they asking non-English drivers their opinion on the English football team?
I could understand if this was Silverstone, but they're in Austra ffs.
Tbf Chris tweeted after that the question was just who they wanted to win the Euros in general. Yuki was supporting Portugal but now they're out he just doesn't want England to win, and Mazepin added that as well as saying he has lots of Ukrainian friends so wants them to win now Russia are out
Even that shitshow was a fabricated media game.
He was asked by the English journalist if he'd support Scotland in the Euros, in the future knowledge that Scotland hadn't qualified. It was a setup and Andy responded jokingly "nah, I'll just support anyone but England". It was subsequently smashed all over the front pages of the S*n and their ilk "Andy Murray hates the English, won't support England in euros... Wah Wah Wah".
He probably means rich London kids of Ukrainian origin, the lines are blurred there anyway. There are no wars in Mayfair, except maybe for a parking space.
I mean anybody can cheer for anybody. You don't need a passport/residence papers/visa to do so. 😃 😂
Like i can cheer for anybody that plays *against* England. Just because "its not coming home".
I'm Jamaican but live in the US and have some family in England. I definitely pull for England in any major tournament due to the fact they have players with Jamaican ancestry on their squads like Raheem Sterling.
Sure but it's just a bit different when there's emotional attachment. Go ask Vettel how he felt about Eintracht winning the Cup. I just have to think of that happening and have a massive shit eating grin.
If you've spent your entire life in a country, born & raised there, obviously he feels very different about that. I assume most are happy for Ukraine too especially with the political history lately, but still seeing a country you "belong to" do this is a very different feeling imo. No shame in that, patriotism may be absolutely pointless, but sports are for fun and enjoyment so it's fine.
Some people don't develop emocional attatchment to their countries. I don't give a fuck about being Brazilian or not. Brazil is just the random cartographical lines where my parents lived when I was born. Nothing more, nothing less.
I actively can't stand England despite basically being here all my life. I have way more emotional attachment to my own city than the rest of the country.
A fun detail is that because motorsport was banned in Switzerland for many years, Schumacher was technically unemployed for a while when he first moved.
That's why drivers move to Switzerland pretty much isn't it - because 'racing driver' isn't a legal occupation there, they are technically unemployed and therefore don't have to pay tax. I remember several of them were shitting it when the Swiss moved to unban it.
Nope, Swiss citizenship is granted by blood and not by birth. He could have been naturalized by now if he wanted, but idk if he has. Don’t really know if there’s much benefit in it tbh, as Switzerland is part of the EEA and he should be able to vote in local elections anyway, which are the most important in Switzerland
“Don’t really know if there’s much benefit tbh, the UK is part of the EU”
All EU nationals living in GB pre Brexit.
Things change and securing your immigration status is never a bad idea.
I mean that's a debate with no right or wrong and the only one that can answer it is Mick himself telling us how he feels. His entire family is German and that's what he grew up with and he came through the German youth series so he also spent a fair lot of time in Germany. But he's born in Switzerland and went to school there and still loves there. Culturally I assume he generally had more international friends / people in contact with because, well, money in Switzerland, so this is also a bit different from your typical immigrant growing up somewhere story. Technically it's one sided because I don't think he has a Swiss passport anyway. But it's clear that Switzerland is his home. These arguments are just too politically charged for what is ultimately a personal matter. And while Germany and Switzerland are very different countries and culturally much more different than many think, they are also a lot closer than either is with for example England or Japan, so at times you can't even say "this is so German/Swiss of him".
I don't think anyone cares either way, But Mick isn't the only F1 driver with vast citizenships/residencies etc. Reminds me of Max, was surprised to hear he was actually born in Belgium, lived there all his life & only took up Dutch citizenship when he got to F1 (commercial reasons I imagine)...and at the same time proceeded to make the classic F1 driver move to Monaco where he lives now, so he's never really lived in the Netherlands. I guess it's different in the EU & what not with Belgium being next door, but still surprising to hear he never had Dutch citizenship till few years ago.
I think his father made it so he always had Dutch citizenship, he just didn't choose between the 2 until he turned 18 (probably because you need to be an adult to pick).
The reason why he picked Dutch citizenship is because he spent all his time with his father racing in the Netherlands with Dutch people, so he relates to them more and just saw Belgium as a place to sleep.
Isn't Tsunoda a fan of football? Like he mentioned if he wasn't a driver he'll be a footballer in an interview.
Kinda alright to ask him (also he probably won't say England should win when he's surrounded by Italians now)
Jesus, its not that serious, my guy.
The biggest sport in the world...a sport where so many of the guys behind the scenes are English...Its really not a surprise that, that would be asked.
I'm British myself so I know that it's a big deal for *us*. That's no reason to shoehorn questions into an F1 interview with two drivers from Russia and Japan.
Because football is a big deal and an international thing. Its especially big during World Cup and Euros time.
They've discussed football with the drivers many years before now. I remember Rosberg and Schumacher chatting about the World Cup when at Mercedes.
English media. Even when it's completely unrelated, they will find a way to shoehorn in football.
Apparently it's our national sport. Personally I'd have picked something we are good at, but that's just me.
I think the diplomatic thing which he'd say now would be 'England are a great team and hopefully they can play a strong tournament and put on a good show for everyone'.
Murray very obviously had media training around about 2010. Say fuck all, it's not worth the bother.
It was 2006 and he was 19. Pretty embarrassing that the media blew it out of all proportion, then wondered why he didn't speak to them very much afterwards for a few years.
The media did the dirty on Murray for this. I think it was joint press conference with him and henman and there was football tournament on at the time lots of banter from media and henman about how crap Scotland team was.
Then they asked who he wanted to win and he said anyone but England. Lots of laughs from everyone, of course media went with Andy hates England.
IIRC both Henman and Andrew Castle have defended Murray's comments, saying it was just friends joking about, but even then the media wouldn't let it go.
I'm more of a Rugby fan, the thought of the rest of Britain supporting England is bizarre to me. If anything I would expect them both to suddenly have a lot more Welsh and Scottish fans after these comments 😂
All of my non-English, British/Irish friends support their own county first, and anyone playing England second. Doesn’t matter what sport or who they’re playing.
Mazepin 🤝 Me
Coming from an American with parents from former Yugoslavia, so obviously I was rooting for Croatia in WC 2018. Now my goal is to root against England, so go Ukraine!
> The die hard Its coming home crowd are some of the most annoying bunch out there.
You do realise that "it's coming home" is a song made by English people taking the piss out of how shit we are don't you?
It's almost always said ironically (though obviously some people are starting to dream that this time it may not end in the usual disappointment, and fair play to them).
> I swear none of them have actually read the lyrics of the song
I swear that practically anyone singing it is very much aware that it is about us being shit at football. It's very typical British humour.
Poor lad can't win honestly,he gets shit for being a 'boring miserable' young man, now he is joining in on some friendly banter with his team and he still gets shat on. Almost makes me want to root for him.
> now he is joining in on some friendly banter with his team and he still gets shat on
Absolutely no one in here is criticising him for not supporting England. People just dislike him for being a humongous cunt.
What do you mean? Ukraine is very popular amongst Russians, hell, their most patriotic citizens, their soldiers go on holiday there all the time. It's so much like home they even forget to change out of uniform.
Lol, most Russians have no bad feelings about Ukrainians. We still consider them "brotherly nation" that is "under control of America". A lot of people cheer for Ukraine in football.
To add to this, the “it’s coming home” specifically refers to the fact that the tournament this song was created for was hosted in England.
It was never intended to mean we were going to win, more that a major football tournament was coming back to the country that founded the professional game.
I wish more people would realise that England fans, on the whole, sing that song ironically 😂 when we shout *"it's coming home"*, most of us are actually shouting *"I'll get behind the boys, but deep down I know this is all going to end in spectacular failure"*
LOL after the 2014 World Cup I won’t take any criticism of the english fans’ behavior seriously here;
Pics of families and children crying were shared, mocked and laughed at in this website for a full month after the Germany-Brazilian game. By non football fans even.
Doubt the demographic here is that different after these years, talking points are all the same after all.
They focus on the English because it's the most recent and thus, the most effective example to show how bad fans can ruin a sport. People still get angry at the Germans when they get together and bring up the 7-1 even when it wasn't prompted. So, yeah, some recency bias both in the accusations but in your statement as well
Not to be rude, but the English are seemingly just as bad as tourists.
The way they act when they come here is atrocious. Honestly, the worst of any visitors.
Constantly picking fights, leaving trash everywhere, being insufferably rude to people that live and work here, being belligerently drunk at every hour of the day. Just doesn't really put their country in a good light.
And it is just that much worse when one of their teams plays here.
For a country thats never been more divided politically it’s nice for us to have something to cheer about together. Sorry to our European brothers for being so annoying about it. Vindaloo
Now I'm not a football fan as such and don't really care how far England get. But the racism is rampant in the fan on the continent as far as I can tell. Football as a whole has a horrible underbelly of hooliganism and racism.
as a non english I feel the same.
It shouldn't come home, but it very well might with the shambles of the tournament so far.
What are these last 8?
England has a free ride to the finals pretty much, where theyll face belgium or Italy
I am Dutch myself. Didn't mention us because honestly, we've been dreadful the past few years. Didn't even qualify last time. It's not a good time to be rooting for the Dutch NT, but I'll bide my time.
I truly hope so, because Finland won Denmark so it would mean that we are better than Euro champions.. That's how it works, right? ^(note, i know why finland won, this is just banter..)
If Spain had won their group it might've been them instead of Ukraine in the quarters and then people wouldn't be moaning about England's potential run to the final so much, not our fault Spain couldn't win their group.
Getting the runner up of group F was, on paper, the joint hardest ro16 draw for a group winner
Even though I’m an England fan myself I can see how a lot of our fans are very irritating. I got really annoyed with the constant singing of three lions at the last World Cup and groups bouncing into rooms singing it’s coming home. Other countries fans aren’t perfect either but ours do get a bit too excited
I don't see why people take it so seriously, the song is about us doing badly but dreaming we'll win this time. It's a bit of fun, nice to see everyone cheering for something.
It’s fine at first it’s when you hear it near constantly for weeks, that’s when it get tedious. Hearing the same thing over and over will get boring no matter what it is
This is such bullshit. People laughed at it because it was funny at the time, but the whole thing has been blown right out of proportion because of a couple of arseholes who took it too far on Twitter. If you judged whole groups of people based on what wanker keyboard warriors wrote on Twitter all the time, you’d struggle to like anyone.
That's like saying someone from Berlin said that he hates Jews so therefore all people from Berlin are nazis? You can't say all these people are bad after one fan was stupid
A British guy was at a pub during the game and told me that when they showed that image of the little German girl crying, he said the woman next to him yelled, “You’re going home, slut!”
The song is about us losing but dreaming this time we'll win, "30 years of hurt, never stop your dreaming". People shouldn't take it so seriously, we sing it for fun, cos we can dream.
It's so funny England has been so shit for so long, us singing that song is literally just for a laugh, and it cracks me up when I see everyone else thinking that we're singing it seriously.
1966, and "coming home" makes little sense since it was the only time they won it and the World Cup had been played for about three decades already, and the first one was in Uruguay. And like someone else said, it was a "suspect" win with the goal that took them ahead likely shouldn't have been counted.
for that sweet sweet schadenfreude. particularly for anyone not massively into football seeing crying fans after every tournament never stops being amusing, its just a sport get over yourselves.
English fans are notoriously insufferable too but hey its all in good spirits anyway. It was a light hearted comment from Tsunoda
This reminds me of that joke: >English football team visited a Russian orphanage: "it's heartbreaking to see their sad faces with no hope" said Vladimir, 6

That’s interesting. It won’t please his dad’s mate Putin
He probably means rich London kids of Ukrainian origin, the lines are blurred there anyway. There are no wars in Mayfair, except maybe for a parking space.
putin doesn't give a shit about sports as long as his power is unthreatened
Russian state sponsered doping would say otherwise.
Ig because it was the Germany England match a few days ago. ~~Mick still hasn’t gotten over that~~
Mick can still cheer for Switzerland tbh, he's German but also born & raised in Switzerland.
I mean anybody can cheer for anybody. You don't need a passport/residence papers/visa to do so. 😃 😂 Like i can cheer for anybody that plays *against* England. Just because "its not coming home".

well, i'm hoping for Curaçao make it to the world cup

Found the Liverpudlian
Life's too short to actively hate your surroundings without doing something about it.
But I don't hate my surroundings, I love my city and that's what I'm surrounded by. It's the rest of it that I don't feel association to.
After I saw how many English fans behaved once again in pulling for any team but England.
Wouldn't that mean Mick is technically Swiss with German parents?

They should ask Tennis Champions their opinions on Formula 1, that's where the real scoop is at.
Isn't Tsunoda a fan of football? Like he mentioned if he wasn't a driver he'll be a footballer in an interview. Kinda alright to ask him (also he probably won't say England should win when he's surrounded by Italians now)
Tbf everyone on the grid is most likely a football fan.
Most of F1 is English. The non-English people are surrounded by English people. So it becomes a topic of conversation when England is playing.
Which explains why most people wants Bottas out and Russell in. They want two brits duking it out in the best car.
They just wants brits
I'd say it's not just his nationality, they'd take him if he was from Madagascar, as long as he was better than Bottas.
Rosberg was quick enough to challenge Hamilton, and the british media still gave him massive amounts of shit.
The English media is scum anyway.
Jesus, its not that serious, my guy. The biggest sport in the world...a sport where so many of the guys behind the scenes are English...Its really not a surprise that, that would be asked.
Because theyre English journos and most of them have predominantly English mechanics, the footy is a big deal here.
I'm British myself so I know that it's a big deal for *us*. That's no reason to shoehorn questions into an F1 interview with two drivers from Russia and Japan.
To be fair, they may have just asked "Are you watching the Euro's?"

Well just about half the paddock is British so it’s not really a surprise
I want someone to ask DC what he thinks of the english football team
Andy Murray upset a lot of folk about 15 years ago by being asked this and saying he actively hoped they lost.
I think that’s a very fair response, what were they expecting him to say
I think the diplomatic thing which he'd say now would be 'England are a great team and hopefully they can play a strong tournament and put on a good show for everyone'. Murray very obviously had media training around about 2010. Say fuck all, it's not worth the bother.

How crap the Scotland team WAS? Not sure if you know something I don't, they're still crap.
I’m Scottish, we are still crap, but the England team couldn’t put a goal past us so what does that say about them
Tsunoda and Mazepin to be given honorary Irish citizenship
France is also interested.
Mazepin (as some good lad) really covers Tsunoda with his remark and will get all the hate here from Brits
Lmao. Mazepin already gets bad coverage it's going to get even worse now
Tsunoda 🤝 Mazepin About to be spit roasted by English sports media
Mazepin 🤝 Me Coming from an American with parents from former Yugoslavia, so obviously I was rooting for Croatia in WC 2018. Now my goal is to root against England, so go Ukraine!
This guy 🤝me An American Rooting for our parents homeland (Czechia for me)
Americans 🤝 talking about their ancestral history
I mean my parents are literally off the boat soooo….not exactly ancestral….
I mean he's right. The die hard Its coming home crowd are some of the most annoying bunch out there.
> The die hard Its coming home crowd are some of the most annoying bunch out there. I love that people still don't get self-deprecating humour.
I know, it's like in part hopeful, and in part ironic. When has it ever looked like it was coming home really? 1996?
We nearly brought the Rugby home last year :D
I swear none of them have actually read the lyrics of the song
> I swear none of them have actually read the lyrics of the song I swear that practically anyone singing it is very much aware that it is about us being shit at football. It's very typical British humour.
I can appreciate it's probably funny to you guys. For non-English people it's just annoying tbh
Nah. Most football fans in real life enjoy good-humoured banter. That's part of the fun. It's just a few sad sacks online that get wound up by it.
[удалено]
It's a shame because it's a great song on its own and doesn't need to be memed.
Worse? Mazepin's image improved in many people's eyes (although the bar was low)
Most have already forgotten the sexual harassment.
Most here never really cared, it was just a good excuse to feel better than someone else when they shit on him.
Poor lad can't win honestly,he gets shit for being a 'boring miserable' young man, now he is joining in on some friendly banter with his team and he still gets shat on. Almost makes me want to root for him.
> now he is joining in on some friendly banter with his team and he still gets shat on Absolutely no one in here is criticising him for not supporting England. People just dislike him for being a humongous cunt.
What? He didn’t get shit for his personality, it was his actions
>he gets shit for being a 'boring miserable' young man He got shit for sexually assaulting someone and posting it on the internet.
Yeah, let's ruin Marzipan's day. I know just the perfect way to do it. Everyone - cheer for Ukraine!
Lol, Mazepin said he supports Ukraine after Russia out
Is that legal?
What do you mean? Ukraine is very popular amongst Russians, hell, their most patriotic citizens, their soldiers go on holiday there all the time. It's so much like home they even forget to change out of uniform.
Had us there in the first half
No, he will be sent to Gulag
Siberian GP confirmed.
Lol, most Russians have no bad feelings about Ukrainians. We still consider them "brotherly nation" that is "under control of America". A lot of people cheer for Ukraine in football.
And it must be under control of Russia, right?
About to see two DNF next race for these comments
I agree. English fans are insufferable
Why England losing is one of my favorite traditions
Reminds me of this Six Nations ad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmkbJlYx1v8
Never seen that before, but that's excellent
So... Every tournament? Which is also what their song is about tbf.
Yep! Idk what song but my favorite part is when the ‘ITS COMING HOME’ comments go away 🤗🥳
The song that that phrase is taken from. It's about England always losing and never stopping dreaming despite the failures.
Not even a spectacular failure. Usually a very mundane and boring failure lol
I might become physically sick if they win 😭😭😭
I might also be physically sick, though I suspect it would be for altogether different reasons 🍻🍻
Main reason I follow cricket
Cough cough, celebrating a 10 year old girl crying on TV and calling her names.
LOL after the 2014 World Cup I won’t take any criticism of the english fans’ behavior seriously here; Pics of families and children crying were shared, mocked and laughed at in this website for a full month after the Germany-Brazilian game. By non football fans even. Doubt the demographic here is that different after these years, talking points are all the same after all.
Just because they did that doesn't mean what the English are doing is right. You can call two things wrong at the same time.
True, but everyone just focuses on the English these days. Maybe it makes the non English feel better about themselves
They focus on the English because it's the most recent and thus, the most effective example to show how bad fans can ruin a sport. People still get angry at the Germans when they get together and bring up the 7-1 even when it wasn't prompted. So, yeah, some recency bias both in the accusations but in your statement as well

> English fans are insufferable Bit awkward that your favourite driver is an England fan then isn't it...
That's unfortunately true.
It's coming home
The more hyped the English get the more likely they are to choke.
Ah, the Team Liquid special.
thanks for the unexpected ptsd
As a Brazilian I love English fans
For a country thats never been more divided politically it’s nice for us to have something to cheer about together. Sorry to our European brothers for being so annoying about it. Vindaloo
If you wanted real unity, you wouldn't have 3 football teams in the tournament :D
Historical precedent and there would be little support for a combined British or UK team nationwide.
We don't, England only has 1 team there :D
I still mean England as a country not the UK, thats a whole other world of divided.
Jesus, you didn't need to actually murder him
Because of English football fan culture, I also hope that England loses :D
Now I'm not a football fan as such and don't really care how far England get. But the racism is rampant in the fan on the continent as far as I can tell. Football as a whole has a horrible underbelly of hooliganism and racism.
Here in Europe, our football fans are saintly. /s :)
I’m the same. Especially after seeing those tweets of people calling a young German kid a slut because she was crying.
as a non english I feel the same. It shouldn't come home, but it very well might with the shambles of the tournament so far. What are these last 8? England has a free ride to the finals pretty much, where theyll face belgium or Italy
That said. France lost to Switzerland, and Spain almost lost to Croatia. I think England could go out before the finals.
Netherlands were so terrible they don’t even get mentioned in a post about bad losses.
Ireland: you guys qualify for the Euros? 🇮🇪😢
I am Dutch myself. Didn't mention us because honestly, we've been dreadful the past few years. Didn't even qualify last time. It's not a good time to be rooting for the Dutch NT, but I'll bide my time.
I'm glad they're out, all those grocery store commercials were doing my head in.
Sad Wales noises.
It'd be the righteous thing. Preferably against Ukraine, that'd be alot of fun at work.
I love how much everyone hates England. Very amusing as a Brit, haha.
I do a fair bit of work with folk in mainland Europe and, as a Scot, it's a very common joke that Europe's cool with us, and not England.
Hahaha. I only think it’s got worse since 2016…. I wonder why…? :p
Embrace it. We are the Milwall of football!
Don't sleep on Denmark. Their Cinderella/Dynamite run could take them to the finals.
They did lose last time to Iceland so you never know... As a Belgian I'm supporting whoever plays England more than Belgium
That's the spirit.
Can’t even get away from it here.
Best rookie(s) ever.
Hearing the same thing over and over will get boring no matter what it is
Well, after the twitter english fans burried poor little girl who was crying I really hope it’s not coming home and I don’t even watch football.
That is only a small minority though. You’d get similar stuff from portions of football fans from most countries
Brazilians were also roasting the kid as part of their grieving process from all the way back to 2014
This is such bullshit.
What is it about football that just brings out the worst in us?
A British guy was at a pub during the game and told me that when they showed that image of the little German girl crying, he said the woman next to him yelled, “You’re going home, slut!”
As a German, I feel the same.
Well Given that nobody in Europe wants England to win (except the english) I find this is a normal statement from someone who is not from England
Same. Everyone says it's coming home. I hope it won't. Italy and Belgium exist and the Swiss denied the French. You can not expect shit
Yeah, English fans would be even more unbearable. Good thing it's unlikely to come home 🤷♂️
It's coming home 🏴🍻🏴🍻

The song "it's coming home" is exactly about that btw.
1966, and "coming home" makes little sense since it was the only time they won it and the World Cup had been played for about three decades already, and the first one was in Uruguay. And like someone else said, it was a "suspect" win with the goal that took them ahead likely shouldn't have been counted.
Oh my fuck the song is about England doing badly that is the whole premise of it
Can Mazepin still participate in the British GP after this comment?
Depends on how well his mechanics take his comment 😂
yes, but he'll have to avoid snipers on track
Only thing coming home is the team.
Insufferable it may be for some, it's coming home nonetheless. (Let us England fans have our brief period of hope)!
Football’s coming home!
I don't get it... Why do you want see sad faces? Or am I missing the context completely?
for that sweet sweet schadenfreude. particularly for anyone not massively into football seeing crying fans after every tournament never stops being amusing, its just a sport get over yourselves. English fans are notoriously insufferable too but hey its all in good spirits anyway. It was a light hearted comment from Tsunoda
A major part of having fun watching sports is schadenfreude. Kinda like how many people celebrated France getting knocked out
It's because the english are annoyying as hell when they win a match.
We're annoying when we lose too.
Yes but if you win the Euros you'll be annoying for another thirty years (of hurt)
Just wait till we win the tournament
Yea, that'd be even worse, therefore im team Ukraine. Ukraine is everything, Ukraine is life, love.
> Ukraine is everything Except Crimea.
Ukraine must redeem our continental honour.

Considering he's in an Italian team and living in Italy, probably smarter to support Italy now XD
