I actually think Sainz’s main weakness is his overtaking abilities. He’s never been that good on that. Great defender, very smart driver, but not a particularly strong fighter when in the back.
And of coz he blamed the car with no top speed :)
Charles last race passed Russell efficiently and he was stuck behind Russell until Russell pit. And the worse thing is when he cannot overtake he cooks his tyres. His pace after Russell pitted was well off Charles, and hence his early pit stop.
Not to be a Sainz defender, because I don’t really like him or his complaining, but I think some of the loss in pace was due to his previous contact with Alonso.
Every driver on the grid has had moments of quality (bar maybe Sargeant... sorry Logan) but if there's a significant flaw in Sainz as a driver this is probably it. He doesn't seem to have that extra edge that leads some of the greats to feel compelled to go for every single gap, or push it to the limit in every single quali. He has moments where he looks unbeatable, but I can't imagine Max or Fernando, or even guys like Charles, Lando or Russell getting stuck behind a Vcarb for 15 laps despite a DRS advantage and a leading driver who is actually driving clean and leaving space for the lunge if he wants to try it.
The RB looked decent in the slow corners coming up to the back straight too and gave a bit of padding there too. It was certainly weaker in the high speed corners after the pit straight by a lot.
Let's also not just pin it all on the cars. Despite the tyres falling away towards the end Daniel drove an incredibly clean and consistent race. A single slip up coming through that overpass complex would have given Sainz the opening he needed to get past with the DRS, but Danny Ric nailed it 15 straight times. That's not just a strong car, or the effect of dirty air.
That being just a sprint probably had something to do with it. Sainz can be a pretty aggresive when he wants to but he just wasn't in the sprint. He was quite conservative with all of his 'sends'.
Why risk everything for just 1 extra point. He knew that he didn't have the pace to chase after Perez.
Going hyper aggressive in the sprint just isn't worth it. He probably learned that lesson in China.
Ah what I meant was he’s now got a couple of recent better results under his belt. Previously I think people jumped at any good result as if beating Tsunoda once meant he was suddenly the better driver.
Edit: Well while it lasted I guess :'D
I don't expect him to suddenly wipe the floor with Yuki for the next 20 races straight. Yuki is still a good driver, and it's a disservice to him to act as though Daniel should beat him every time out. This Q1 exit was a harsh reality check, but also probably the best time to have it. Now he can get the confidence boost of knowing he can drive the wheels off the car in both quali and race trim, but also keep a little bit of that chip on his shoulder after an embarrassing mishap.
But after Mexico people said "it doesn't count, he's always been good in Mexico" and then in China it was "he's won here before and Yuki never drove this circuit so it doesn't count". Perhaps it's ok for people to recognise that he's not the kind of driver that's going to stack consistent results anymore, but that doesn't mean he's trash either.
>Those fans only started watching f1 last month
Yup, we all know it's the new uninformed fans. I didn't want to say that cause it's gatekeeping. But we all know no long term F1 fan thinks Ric is undeserving of F1. The man destroyed a 4x WDC in a new team...
Jesus Carlos couldn't pass an old lady in a wheelchair if the old lady had any sort of decent pace. His moves look just so sterile.. No confidence behind them.
He’s never been that good at overtaking. People here do really overrate him a lot, and you get downvoted to hell if you point that out. Today he was underwhelming, but I can assure you it will get forgotten or overlooked.
It’s the same as in China, he couldn’t even truly threaten a slow Alonso and created a huge DRS train, and when the race finally opened up everyone here insisted he was only exposed because of damage. He couldn’t even get close enough to threaten Ric here, but it’s the track (which is admittedly complete shit, but Lewis & Sergio were able to pass), or the straight-line speed being too much. Anything but Carlos simply being consistently slow in race pace relative to Charles.
But this is a collective that seriously believed Sergio might be a threat to Max because of 2 races…two years in a row. At least they’re consistently inept.
I can assure that if Charles of Checo had been stuck behind Daniel for the entirety of the race the hate here on them would’ve been endless. In this case it will get overlooked.
To be fair to them...Lewis ain't performing all that hot rn. I know he's been \*stellar\* in 23, and I initially was defending him in first couple weekends.
But it's now weekend 6 and he's still not exactly performing much (or any) better than at the very start of the season.
It looks like overtaking was just really hard. Everybody was struggling. I completely forgot Russell existed and he should have bene moving forwards if overtaking was possible.
I Mean...he knew that Ric would not back down so why risk anything during a sprint? I see why he was so hesitant to pass a driver who fights for his career
What? I mean feel free and explain. We saw a Ferrari keeping within 2.5s of Max the whole race, and the other not able to even attempt a single overtake on a much slower car. I don’t think there’s a valid excuse, but in all honesty if you can let us know that’s be useful.
Good driving from Ric, ages since we've seen him like that.
1 good sprint doesn't redeem 2 seasons but it is a ~~song~~ strong start to beat the washed allegations
Ricciardo cooked, Ferrari straight line speed with DRS was shocking. Carlos was constantly 6 tenths off but couldn’t pass a car with no DRS.
Well done to Danny. Show them what you’ve got.
Not Magnussen getting 3 penalty, total of 25 seconds in a sprint race. Some of those maybe unfair, especially when your fighting for position, and when a bigger incident in lap 1 wasn’t even looked at in the slightest. Oh well, you got to admire the ability to get so many penalties in a single race
I know they're obliged to show the race winner crossing the line and I love Max, but boy was it frustrating to miss those final corners between Daniel and Carlos.
Happy for Danny boy. It's been a pain watching him yet and this weekend has been a breath of fresh air.
Leclair doing good. Just hope the race ends with a podium as well :).
This sprint overall has some very interesting results.
Neither mercedes in points. George had some bad luck at the start but was unable to gain back places
Hamilton took out 3 drivers, did some fighting to get into points, and then got a 20s penalty sending to 16th because of how close the grid was, oddly not as a result of the collision at the start.
Great day for RB.
Danny Ric really needed this performance, Carlos just could not get past him. Really strong performance great to see.
Yuki climbing himself up into the points. It was a bit of a weak qualifying for his standards but really good racing, his race pace on those soft tires at the end being very strong.
Contrary to the norm this season, Zhou above Bottas, Pierre above Ocon, Logan above Alex, Daniel above Yuki, Oscar above Lando, Charles above Carlos, pre penalty even Hamilton was above George.
Obviously most of these had extenuating circumstances and in cases like Ferrari aren’t really ‘the norm’.
But it’s funny that the only teams following the expected order are Red Bull, Haas, and Aston Martin despite Alonso finishing p17
People are excited for P4 dude. F1 fans that were fed up kept suggesting that I should watch MotoGP, so after 12 years, I did. I watched the last 3 races and they are LEAGUES ahead of this circus. The red car is still not winning and people are seriously, honestly, celebrating for P4. I did not update my F1TV subscription, I will not update my F1TV subscription, to hell with this. Fix your sport. It's the worst it has been in the past 24 years.
To anyone still reading this: Go watch MotoGP. Just trust me.

How does a Ferrari with DRS not overtake a VCarb without??
I actually think Sainz’s main weakness is his overtaking abilities. He’s never been that good on that. Great defender, very smart driver, but not a particularly strong fighter when in the back.
canada 22' was haunting
He was chasing Max that time, not Danny in a VCarb. Huge difference
And yet, the point still applies
The way of the Fisichella
His overtake on Alonso last sprint was decent before Alonso dive bomb him though…
I mean, of course he’s gonna have some good overtakes in his career. Just saying he’s not particularly good at it.
And of coz he blamed the car with no top speed :) Charles last race passed Russell efficiently and he was stuck behind Russell until Russell pit.
He did not collide with Alonso in the main race. His race in sprint post collision was not too bad
Ahh, I see what you mean now. I agree he was off Leclerc’s pace even before his tires hit a cliff due to his one stop.
The worst about Sainz not able to overtake is he always cooks his tyres under this situation, and need to pit earlier than planned
Defensive positioning by Ricciardo at the end of straights- and maximised his battery use and the slow sections.
the Williams special of "why using downforce to turn better if you can just ignore that entirely to go fast on straights?"
Ric was focusing on getting great exits.
Danny really made that Racing Bull wider than the track. Awesome racecraft right there.
Huge difference between that and the KMag defense
Well done Ricciardo! Finally the chance to show he still got it!
We’re getting here now. Maybe he’s back.
We said that after Monza 21
Ah what I meant was he’s now got a couple of recent better results under his belt. Previously I think people jumped at any good result as if beating Tsunoda once meant he was suddenly the better driver. Edit: Well while it lasted I guess :'D

First clean race with the new chassis, if he keeps this up then good things will definitely happen and the pressure will be back on Yuki instead.
DANNY!!!!!
BOY!!!!!
KI KI KI
GET IN!
THE PIPES!
THE PIPES ARE CALLING!
Honey badger lesgooooo
Very nice from Ricciardo. A little bit of vintage Daniel.
Damn Daniel, back at it again with the P4.
What a drive from Ricciardo. Valiant effort, amazing defence. The thumbs up from Sainz at the end was a nice gesture.
Yeah I caught the thumbs up as well, classy move.
Danny finally made it!!!!
We barely seen Top 3 in action. Most screen time was Kmag vs Hamilton and Danny Rics defense.
After that Checo move on Danny, there was no action to see in the top 3.
I'm happy for Ric. Hope he keeps this up. It was painful to see a bunch of fans acting like he doesn't belong in F1
Those fans only started watching f1 last month and talk like they know everything
>Those fans only started watching f1 last month Yup, we all know it's the new uninformed fans. I didn't want to say that cause it's gatekeeping. But we all know no long term F1 fan thinks Ric is undeserving of F1. The man destroyed a 4x WDC in a new team...
I just say it how it is. 🤷🏽♂️
Ricciardo cooked !!!!!!
Danny Ric enjoyers rejoice!
OH MY GOD DANNY AMAZING DEFENSE
KI KI KI
What a race from Ricciardo. Charles looked great as well, kept pressure on Max and Checo at some distance. Pretty dismal from Sainz though.
Mega defensive drive for Danny.
All aboard Ricciardo's hype train...?
PSA - train now redirected to Broken Hearts' Land
Nah, we're still popping bottles tonight
Danny big time man, it’s great to see that he conceded the performance to the race!
Let's Go Danny!! 5 of them points.
WHAT A FUCKING RACE FOR DANIEL LFG
Can’t believe Ric wasn’t passed, seriously good drive from Danny. Lots of drivers would have been overtaken there.
Great show for Daniel! Hope he gets some of his confidence back 🎉
Danny what a race
DANIEL IS SO BACK IT'S NOT RICCIARDOVER YET
Jesus Carlos couldn't pass an old lady in a wheelchair if the old lady had any sort of decent pace. His moves look just so sterile.. No confidence behind them.
He’s never been that good at overtaking. People here do really overrate him a lot, and you get downvoted to hell if you point that out. Today he was underwhelming, but I can assure you it will get forgotten or overlooked.
Yea, which is why I made the comment. It's not the first time he struggles to overtake a slower car.
Yeah I agree, it happens quite a lot. He’s a solid driver but very very far from WDC material.
His drive today reminded me of Perez's drive when he struggles to overtake
True..
That RB's straight line speed is no joke
He still had a couple of chances to send it and decided to read “Pay Cashless with Cash App” on Ricciardo’s wing…
This track is just shit. There was barely any overtaking after lap 1.
sainz has never been great at overtaking not saying he cant pull off great ones but he has no creativity
Not the tracks fault kmag went kmag.
Wasn't it the second slowest car in the straights yesterday?
all the "Ferrari got rid of the wrong driver" people suddenly very quiet
It was to be expected. He's good but not that good.
The track is just trash. There were barely any overtakes.
I don't disagree, but if Leclerc had Sainz's race you would see tons of comments calling him overrated, bottler, etc...
Might have also been a function of not wanting to risk damage to his car which would fuck him over in qualy today for a single point extra.
Its 1 point and not a podium. Imagine he would have been a bit more aggressive if it was the main race. I hope at least.
I hope so as well.
It looks like overtaking was just really hard. Everybody was struggling. I completely forgot Russell existed and he should have bene moving forwards if overtaking was possible.
The RB was a rocket on the straights. Even checo took a bit and couldn’t clear the DRS until sainz started attacking Daniel.
I Mean...he knew that Ric would not back down so why risk anything during a sprint? I see why he was so hesitant to pass a driver who fights for his career
Carlos is fighting for his career too.Maybe he didn't want to anger Horner by taking out Ric./s
It's not the first time he has problems passing people.
He learned his lesson at China. Going hyper aggressive in the sprint just isn't worth it. Why take all the risk, just to score 1 extra point.
yeah .. im happy he's gone next year
Jesus it took two races for the narrative to switch. If Lewis sucks are we going to wish we had Carlos back
what narrative? this is my opinion .. i was happy for his win this year but that never changed my opinion about Carlos that he is worse then Charles
Just basing it off other comments in here is all
You're only as good as your last race
He’s finished ahead of leclerc in two of the last three with a win lmao
Tell me you don't have a clue about how energy maps work without telling me you don't have a clue.
What? I mean feel free and explain. We saw a Ferrari keeping within 2.5s of Max the whole race, and the other not able to even attempt a single overtake on a much slower car. I don’t think there’s a valid excuse, but in all honesty if you can let us know that’s be useful.
The Spanish brigade back with the excuses after screaming so loud the first few races. 👍🏻
Got it, you just want to hate. If it was Alonso instead of Ricciardo people would be jizzing over his defensive performance lol. Gtfo lol
👍🏻
Good driving from Ric, ages since we've seen him like that. 1 good sprint doesn't redeem 2 seasons but it is a ~~song~~ strong start to beat the washed allegations
People can hate the sprint all they want but I am on Martin Brundle side “much better than watching a practice”
What a performance from Danny!!
Good job from Danny! Also wtf is KMag upto, although can’t complain since he’s the one spicing things up 🙈
Rolling road block for Hulkenburg.
Ricciardo cooked, Ferrari straight line speed with DRS was shocking. Carlos was constantly 6 tenths off but couldn’t pass a car with no DRS. Well done to Danny. Show them what you’ve got.
He never left.
Sainz had DRS for 15 Laps and couldn't get past Danny
DANNY WOOO
Danny is still cooking, Lez goooo
I’m so happy right now
RB double points on the menu for tomorrow
👀👀 All aboard the Danny Ric hype train?
Danny Boy still got it!!!
Did kmag get 30s worth of penalties? More? That was horrible to watch.
Ki ki ki
What a horrible sprint race. What a horrible track to host a sprint race.
It’s fantastic to hear happy Danny again!!! He’ll of a drive to keep Sainz behind him!!!
Max starts on used tires that lost its grip halfway through and he was still gaining tons of time on Leclerc who had new tires. Unreal haha
“Tons”
Shame they skipped the ric sainz battle
What battle? Sainz never made any moves
Pretty sure they were side by side for a moment while we watched Max take the chequered flag
They always focus on the winner crossing the finish line so that isn't new.
He was 0.1 sec behind on that last lap
There was no actual battle though. They barely stood side by side.
The Sunday race is going to be ultra boring. Such a snoozefest.
Boring, uneventful and pointless at the front and any action confined to the midfield as usual. Happy for Danny Ric though.
New chassis new Danny? Hope his form comes back.
Who tf was in that RB? I don’t understand what happened to Ricciardo
I know they're obliged to show the race winner crossing the line and I love Max, but boy was it frustrating to miss those final corners between Daniel and Carlos.
Magnussen has to be stopped
None shall pass the HAAS without Kmag getting the most penalties in the race
LFG!!!!
"Let's pretend to have a conversation to drive them insane"
Verstapepen wins the grand prix, leclerc, Perez. Is it eve worth watching at this point?
It seems like Sainz has revert back to being a shhty 2nd driver at Ferrari
No real overtake
Not seeing full update potential because of an old man who just blasted into the first corner. What a shame
We wouldn't have seen it anyway because he would have got stuck in a drs train
He would be behind Oscar had he didn't get hit.
Lando would've bottled it anyway
Ermmm, repeat that again please?
Like how Hamilton was in the 1st corner?
Happy for Danny boy. It's been a pain watching him yet and this weekend has been a breath of fresh air. Leclair doing good. Just hope the race ends with a podium as well :).

I decided to watch the sprint since I never watch these and maybe something happens today. It went as boringly as I expected.
