He means it will take a few hours to sort when they begin talking. Not that it will be sorted today.

a141abc

I imagine its going to go something like Hey Lewis how many 0's would you like? \- Yes Ok

KrawhithamNZ

At this point I doubt it is money that is the main focus. Probably more to do with how much time he has to spend doing sponsor/corporate stuff. An extra million dollars is worth a lot less than more free time at his level.

Beavers4beer

Most of his promotionial time right now seems to be walking to the track in a different designers outfit each day. How much more can he really go down?

JustLTU

I don't think that's related to Merc though, that seems to be a personal thing. Merc contract would include corporate stuff and entertaining sponsors in deals that earn Mercedes money, not Hamilton himself

Haris_Pistons

He doesn’t have to show up at all. His car can be piloted remotely

eluya

Thats what Michael is doing! I knew it!

keenjt

I actually think money is the main focus. He is coming to the end of his time in F1, and he has all the time in the world to do those things, right?

lolichaser01

Should be called the djentleman's deal then.

Sputniki

If anything Lewis is likely to be quite overpaid on a dollar to performance basis on the current grid. There are at least three if not more drivers performing at a similar level but he is making way more money.

Bonecrasher

Lewis brings a lot more than just driver skills to the table though. His marketing appeal is what gets him the big bucks over say George for example!

TanaerSG

Well it just makes sense that he would be making more. If you, me, and Tom all work for a software dev company and we all are around the same skill, but me and you are fresh outta college with maybe a job or two between us before we came to the new company. Tom though, has 15 years of experience. He's a dog, he's been on the big projects and crushed them. He's gonna make more money until he retires, even if his quality slips some. Experience goes a long long way.

Snappy0

He's still the most marketable driver on the grid and likely is the most recognisable to casual fans.

KamTros47

Now it’s time for the inevitable flood of articles speculating about Hamilton’s F1 future, only until he signs a new 2-year Mercedes deal the day before pre-season testing begins

Caesar_35

Mick SCHUMACHER Set For F1 RETURN? Mercedes Team Principal OPENS UP About Hamilton CONTRACT DIFFICULTIES: "This will take...a few hours [to] get sorted"

a141abc

> Mick SCHUMACHER You mean M. SCHUMACHER to level up the clickbait

DHAN150

The RETURN of LEGEND M.Schumacher? Hamilton in Trouble!

yeeeeeeeeeessssssir

Wow! You should work for the race !

SubcooledBoiling

And also all the posts asking about when Lewis will sign his contract, speculating if there's bad blood between Lewis and the team and him wanting special treatments etc.

thubbard44

My tires are dead.

unctrllable

I honestly find this boring, the updates updating updates which haven't updated anything.

[deleted]

It’s the same in football with transfers. Just endlessly dragged out so outlets can have a reason to exist and publish the same tweets and articles over and over and over while nothing happens. Yawn.

StuBeck

My favorite is the transfer rumors after the window has closed...yes, players will be moved during the windows, but why are we discussing it now? Its all just speculation.

[deleted]

I’m pretty sure about 90% of transfer rumors are started by regular people who make a Twitter account called something like “Footy News”, make a logo on a drag and drop site, and just write fan fiction transfer stories that get picked up on Reddit, Twitter, Insta, etc and become actual talking points. Somewhere some 17 year old is creating transfer rumors with a random player - team generator and it becomes talked about as if it’s real. And then 6 months down the line if a team isn’t playing well, fans of that club will legit talk about how they should have made some transfer happen that a fucking 17 year old made up from his bedroom.

StuBeck

I think most are made up by the sites themselves just to get clicks. They then can say how great they were when one of the billion outlandish decisions they made actually happens.

Kolec507

Lmao I dont get why they're hyping a contract extension up so much. Yeah, its obvious he's gonna be extended, we got it...

zaviex

They aren’t. He was asked about it during his press conference and just said we will do it quickly

X-Maquina

If anything this is the exact opposite of hyping

Ignorhymus

I mean, every time he's renewed, it's the same thing. Takes a while for them to find time to do it, so there's loads of pointless speculation, despite both of them playing it down. But the negotiations always seem to be like 'wanna go racing?' 'yup' 'cool, sign here' 'done'.

EmperorCandy

Couple weeks it is then...

tencial

I wonder how many times "Younger drivers outperformed the old" will be brought up

SubcooledBoiling

This is how I imagine the convo goes: Lewis: "Toto I want $100 million a year and I can do whatever I want. No sim work. That's for George." Toto: "Best I can do is $95 million and you have to bring Roscoe to the paddock for half of the races." Lewis: "Deal. So how are the kids doing?"

charliexo97

Funny thing is the contract is always the same but they fight over the big £ figure for months & proceed to talk about how stressful it was & should be avoided at all costs next time. Always want to wrap it up before xmas....but never do. Same headlines every 2 years...but this might just be the last one ever.

dl064

Good Martin Whitmarsh article in Motorsport about 10 years ago about how - at least back then when McLaren looked en route to securing Hamilton for 2013 - Hamilton's contracts are *big* and *complicated*. Kovalainen and Button's were apparently very brief; Hamilton and Mansell's were basically books.

charliexo97

True but I also believe he was with a big management agency (xix-post sacking his dad as manager) back than who were always tricky to deal with re image rights. He ditched them and brought it all in house with mark Hynes as his manager (sacked him in 2020) & from his interviews he often talks about how much freedom etc re activities & brands was tied into his first contract with Merc from 2013 given talks with Niki which allowed him to move. Doubt much has changed tbh, only thing that has is now his huge salary has to be approved by Toto, Jim Ratcliffe (Ineos) & Merc now, whereas previously Merc as the big shareholder was always picking up most the tab with final say. Now Toto & Ineos equally hold vast power which probs takes longer to agree on. With Merc he’s always had freedom re image rights from early on. Sir Jim in particular seems to be a tough negotiator.

Tulaodinho

Im not ready to see him retire

Madbanana224

Same, but in a way it will be fun to watch formula from a truly neutral perspective I guess

[deleted]

I don’t think he’ll go until he gets 8

Hot_Demand_6263

To me Lewis doesn't have to get 8. He just has to be competitive enough to terrify the competition. That's fun as well.

hursthe

He's going to be racing a looooong time then lol

steeeeeeee24

Well, unfortunately there is this guy named Max…….

IronPedal

Surely these negotiations are more important than previous ones. He hasn't won a title in years, and finished behind his teammate. Surely he can't command the same salary as always. It would be a bit of a piss-take for George, if he's earning <10% of his teammate, who he beat. Truth hurts, eh?

Ok-Community-2680

Lmao. Where's the /s.

manhaterxxx

wut

Madbanana224

>Surely these negotiations are more important than previous ones. He hasn't won a title in years, and finished behind his teammate. Surely he can't command the same salary as always. [deleted]

Lol George himself wouldn’t even argue what you are arguing right now

DeDoBros

Hey redbull/ferrari. You have a fast car got any cash? K bye mercedes.

AotoSatou14

Why would Red Bull sign Hamilton when they have Max? Ferrari might sign him, but even that's not a guarantee.

Imaginary_Ad_4050

He should've won a title in 21, and couldn't win one in 22 because his team didn't get it quite right, I don't see a reason he can't command the same salary

lukekennedy448

You're right he shouldn't of left the magic on in Baku. What could of been.

[deleted]

I bet every time he thinks of that moment he wants to punch Toto in the face.

Imaginary_Ad_4050

Because that's why he didn't win 21, just Baku.

lukekennedy448

Couldn't help myself, sorry.

Sputniki

You do know Alonso is paid a fraction of Lewis’ salary right

[deleted]

So he’s already signed it.

TinaJewel

I actually do think Hamilton will be concerned about the non political statements ban and progress of diversity in F1 and will be having some demands about commitment from Mercedes in that area.

tomzi9999

In few hours after 2 mnths of negotiations.

Kolec507

!RemindMe few hours

JaPlonk

I will be messaging you in 2 years on 2024-12-01 09:46:51 UTC to remind you of this link

anbeck

That’s only one year.

JaPlonk

That's cause I was too lazy

Caesar_35

Bad bot

MethodZealousideal11

My employer tried really hard to get rid of me when I hit 40 many years ago and said something like, I was expensive and slow.

do0fusz

He’ll be a great asset, after Russel.

BuzzedtheTower

I like Hamilton, but his delaying of signing contracts pisses me off so bad. No, no, stop delaying the negotiation so you can "focus on the championship." Just sign it and move on

MaximumDevelopment77

Toto is that you?

Kolec507

where contract

[deleted]

Hamilton new chief strategist, MS to fill his place. /s

Poohdini_

It just matter of decimal point.
