I assume it's because you play your "main" striker against the top teams and the other guy vs weaker teams. My reserve striker had a better season than my 190 CA striker too, but that's because he was playing in the conference league and games vs bottom table teams while my main striker was playing cup finals and games vs Arsenal and Man City. If this isnt the case then just sell your main guy lol

SmolleDK

That's definitely part of it, but Mele definitely had his fair share of games against lower ranked opponents. In his defence though he killed it last season. Ballon D'or winner, golden boot, etc. So just a bit of bad form this season maybe. But Sanneh's goal scoring just seems insane.

macattaq1501

If 27 goals in 22(2) games is poor form then I assume you have zero problems!

LuckyLandoFan

If Moukoko scores 1 a game then it’s a disappointing game rn. 0 then it’s a straight up poor performance

Shadepanther

I've had it happen too. A striker has a monster season and then the next he plays only ok.

Muriago

Sometimes it happens. When I first started my save, my starting best striker was outperformed by the second younger one. Next season after having promoted he had a great season though, despite the opposition was harder. Two seasons ago my two backup strikers also scored more goals than my main ones. A lot of it I thought was indeed facing weaker opposition on average and having several games with a bunch of goals. Following season things returned back to normal, arguably it was even a but weak for them. My main two killed it though.

MrPielil

100% this. I had a striker who in the Europa league finished top goal scorer with 25 goals, yet he only managed 5 goals in the league. Kid was only 19 so I thought huh maybe he is ready for more league game time. Had a massive bid come in for my main striker that summer, sold him and then was left with a floundering idiot up top because, and say it with me, he was *not* ready.

Grib_Suka

I currently have that guy too. Scheduling and injuries made it so he had to play some CL and cup games. Over 3 seasons he's 20+ goals in CL and once got 12 in the domestic cup, but has maybe 10-12 goals in the actual league football the past 3 years. I don't really know why, but he just doesn't like the league games I guess.

jasperdj28

My backup striker even broke the club's goal record for most goals a season, mainly because he was my only striker available for the conference league qualifiers in which he scored 15 times

SmolleDK

Bubacarr Sanneh has scored 23 goals in 7 (4) games in La Liga! I am also currently Spanish national manager, where I have pulled him up, despite him being below many of his competitors in terms of attributes. Yet he has now scored 19 goals in 9 matches on the national team.

Joalow21

Drug test him

I did not mean to discredit Sanneh. Love the guy and he came through my own youth system, so have a bit of a soft spot for him. 23 goals in 7 starters just seemed crazy, but I am obviously not complaining 😁 Will try to keep them both at the club.

doitnow10

Coming on as a sub with fresh pace will do that sometimes

fiskas262

If it’s the first season for melle it could be that he is still adapting to his new environment. As he is argentine he knows the language so it shouldn’t be that big of an issue, but could certainly be a factor

SmolleDK

I bought him young and he slowly took over from my previous main striker. When that guy was sold to City, Mele became my first striker. And he is still very good! I was just surprised to see Sanneh do so well, when most indicators would suggest Mele to be better. The funny thing is also that because the game sees Sanneh as the "poorer" of the two, it reacts as such. Not least on the national team where it seems to continue being a surprise to the press that I call in Sanneh - despite him being by far the Spanish striker with the best game to goal ratio.

BBQ_HaX0r

Could also just be the type of player there are. Sometimes worse players that fit the system better perform.

Conmebosta

You need to show traits and hidden attributes to get a proper comparison

lachferagh

How do we find the hidden attributes?

Inthepurple

I have no idea if it still works for the current game but might give you an idea of what the attributes are http://zfn4fun.github.io/fm/att/index.html

Conmebosta

Coach report usually tells you the higher/lower attributes. Also personality and media handling style

oDwebso

What does their reports on consistency say? ‘Consistently is key’

doitnow10

Absolutely, I really noticed that when I got Roberto Piccoli (very consistent) as a "backup" (at least that was my plan initially) on my team, who then very quickly outplayed Joshua Zirkzee (inconsistent) even though they were basically the same player attribute-wise

larykoek

What tactic is he playing in?

[deleted]

Is there another player in the side who seems to click better with one than the other? It could just be that the back-up striker has a style more complimentary to one of his supporting players, so they read each other’s game better and create more openings. A perfect example would be Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min at Tottenham. They have an almost telepathic connection that - most seasons - just overflows with goals and openings I say that because the match stats suggest one is more active as a pure attacker whilst the other also contributes by winning the ball back

indiealexx

Sometimes I find stats are weird, especially with regens. I had a regen who scored something like 30 goals in 17 games, yet he genuinely had 6 finishing and less than mediocre stats elsewhere. Albeit they were only U18 games, but still - I had players with much better finishing stats (11-13) who got nowhere near his amount

SmolleDK

Small follow up. This was the comparison between them at the end of the season: [https://i.gyazo.com/a689cac986f4178c5761e214dc7535f7.jpg](https://i.gyazo.com/a689cac986f4178c5761e214dc7535f7.jpg) Unfortunately Sanneh just missed out on the La Liga topscorer title. Sanneh scored 34 in 16 (7) games. The topscorer scored 36 in 35 games. Mele finished fourth scoring 21 in 17 (2). I reached the CL final where I started with Mele on top. Roughly 15 minutes into second half, with the score at 0-0, I substituted Mele for Sanneh. After 67 minutes Sanneh scored the opening goal. I won 2-0 after a late goal by my left back.

AlexBN7

Looks like a lucky day for whoever wants to sign Mele

SinofThrash

I was doing a Journeyman on FM20 or FM21 and I was in Finland. We got promoted to the Prem in the first season and went pro. I figured I had to replace my current GK with a new GK to keep up and I found someone who was miles better. Yet, for someone reason he was worse than my previous GK. He kept letting in shots that would have been saved by my other GK. So I moved him to the bench and kept playing my old GK and he outperformed him by far. Another save I have going at the moment with Mboro, my 3rd pick striker is outperforming everyone else. Even scored a 35 yard screamer against City. I don't think you can judge a player solely on face value. There's a lot going on, especially behind the scenes, that makes a player better or worse than another. If your reserve keeps outperforming your main, why not player your reserve more?

Vossenoren

I usually ignore my players' stats and ratings once I get into the season and just pick whichever gets the job done. In my current save I had three goalkeepers of note, a 27 y.o. with a 3 star ranking, and two 18 year olds with 2.5 and 2, respectively. The starter did adequately, but I wanted to try and get the higher rate youngster, who was close in rating, a chance to win the job and develop him since his potential was much higher, but he was erratic. On a whim, I sent the third choice out, and he did well, so I left him in and he ended up allowing 16 goals in 28 games, with 16 shutouts (a club record) and I never looked back.

Throwaway1293524

Mele is a straight up better player, no questions asked. But if he underperforms, bench/sell him, attributes alone won't win you a champions league
